In this episode, I'm going Commando. The 1985 Arnold Schwarzenegger classic bullets and bodies action extravaganza, that is! I'm going retro this week since there's nothing good enough at the theaters to review for my beloved movie maniacs and fellow freedom-fueled film fanatics. Commando is about ex-Special Forces soldier John Matrix trying to save his daughter after she's kidnapped to force him to assassinate a president. Matrix escapes the baddies tasked with escorting him to the country to kill the president, and the action blows up from there. He's joined by Rae Dawn Chong, as Cindy, who involuntarily at first, becomes his valuable ally. Will he get his daughter, played by Alyssa Milano, back in time? Of course he will! Commando also stars the late great Bill Paxton in a small role, Dan Hedaya, Vernon Wells, David Patrick Kelly, James Olson, Bill Duke, Drew Snyder, Sharon Wyatt, Michael DeLano and Bob Minor. On this week's show, we watched 1985's Commando starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rae Dawn Chong, and Vernon Wells. Arguably, it's one of Arnold's best movies, and for good reason. While the plot of the movie is thin, it's heavy on explosions, big guns, bigger muscles, a comic book-level villain, giant dudes beating the hell out of each other, and some of Schwarzenegger's greatest one-liners. In short, it's a wildly fun movie. If you like what you hear, be sure to subscribe. Enjoy!

Arnold has many great action flicks over his career but in the 80's one of them stands out among them all and that is Commando. I think there are more one liners in this movie then most of his put together. It has a great cast in it and the action is spot on as only Arnold can bring it. The Stallone/ Arnold rivalry was big in the 80's and I believe this was Arnold's version or answer to Rambo. Who do you think made the better character?? Arnold as John Matrix or Stallone as John Rambo? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/retrolife4you/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/retrolife4you/support

1985 is the summer that kicked off the box office rivalry between action powerhouses Slyvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Stallone had Rambo: First Blood Part 2 and Arnold had the fun version of that movie, Commando!Commando costars Rae Dawn Chong, Alyssa Milano, David Patrick Kelly, Bill Duke, and a very odd Dan Hedaya accent. This was a movie Mike loved to the point that a grease painted Arnold poster for this movie on his bedroom wall. To be fair, he also had an oily Stallone for First Blood Part 2 and a matchstick chomping Stallone Cobra on his walls too. Will Allyson embrace the cheesy 80s over the top action as much as Mike did? What do you think of Commando? HOW DID NO ONE KNOW HE WAS WHITE!?!? Sorry, getting ahead of ourselves. This week, Jordan and Cameron discuss a movie people have been asking for again and again. 1986's Soul Man. Look, C. Thomas Howell is in black face. Period. That's the movie. But we are so very lucky to be joined by the perfect guests to discuss this train wreck, Wynter and Karen from Waiting to X-Hale! There's so much to discuss here. Karen and Wynter discuss seeing this movie in theaters. We talk about the absurdity of "tanning pills", C. Thomas Howell and Rae Dawn Chong getting married (!) after this movie and their continued defense of the film. And the fever dream of a music video that came out with the movie. Karen and Wynter are incredible. Truly. So smart and funny and obviously you want more from them. So follow Karen at @Inlandemperor and check out her work and books at Karentongson.org. You can find Wynter at @wyntermitchell. And find Waiting to X-Hale wherever you podcast! Let's Party! We watched one of the gayest action movies to come out of the 1980s Commando with our TCM friends Ben Cheaves and Millie De Chirico. Y'all this movie is insane, and doesn't get nearly enough credit for making Arnold Schwarzenegger the movie star he is today. Arnold plays an ex-special ops soldier living in the woods with his daughter played by Samantha from Who's the Boss, Alyssa Milano. When his daughter is kidnapped by an evil dictator played by Dan Hedaya he must use his Captain America strength to hunt down the men responsible. We discuss if this movie is actually a love story between Arnold and the International Male clad Vernon Wells from Mad Max 2, its smart talking sidekick played with perfect comic timing by Rae Dawn Chong, and if Arnold in that black swim brief leave us feeling a certain way?
