Let us pursue another dumb idea that turned into a good idea. As we've casually mentioned for the past few months, we've been working on a new (occasional) show, GOD BLESS THE RING, an exploration of the history, lore, and gameplay of classic beat 'em ups and fighting games. We brought in a third host (thanks, Mark) and try to put a twist on our format. Fighting games and beat 'em ups aren't really ripe for a deep, critical analysis in the traditional sense, but Eric applied weird, creative fiction to each encounter as we talked through the game. This is GOD BLESS THE RING – Retrograde Amnesia's exploration of the history, lore, and gameplay mechanics of classic beat ‘em ups and fighting games. In our first installment, we're hitting up Double Dragon and Double Dragon II: The Revenge. We are joined by the purveyor hot sounds himself, Mark. Last week, we talked Super Mario Bros. Maybe you're wondering, 'where do you go after talking about one of the greatest Nintendo games of all-time?' You talk about one of the greatest SEGA games of all-time! And that's what we're doing this week with the phenomenal beat 'em up; Streets of Rage 2. Sometimes I struggle with playing a retro game for the first time nowadays, because their warts and imperfections just stand out so much more than they did back when the game released. But I gotta tell you kids - Streets of Rage 2 is every bit as playable today as it was in 1992. And that's really fucking playable. My guest this week is my buddy Joe. He's a born and bred Sega kid, who grew up on a steady diet of Streets of Rage, and we blew so much smoke up this game's ass it looked like it was on fire. This might just be my favourite game on the Genesis, period. And before we talk about rage filled streets, it's another edition of the Remember The Game Infamous Intro! This time around, we talk about stuff like games that make us angry, but we play them anyway. I explain how much money I make on services like Patreon and Twitch, as opposed to how much those platforms take for themselves. And someone asks which console I've enjoyed more so far; my Playstation 5 or my Xbox Series X. AND, we have another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One'. This time, it's the "beat 'em ups that aren't Streets of Rage" edition, featuring Double Dragon II, River City Ransom, and Battletoads. Are you on social media? Of course you are. So follow us! We'll probably follow you back ;) Twitter: @MemberTheGame Instagram: @MemberTheGame Facebook.com/MemberTheGame Twitch.tv/MemberTheGame

After five weeks of warriors ending in two Dragon Warriors, we now shift to a different kind of dragon (TWO dragons!) Join Pat Dooley and Ricardo Giraldo for the twenty-third match-up of the Nintendo Entertainment Center King of Consoles tournament as gravity-defying mech actioner Metal Storm takes on side-scrolling beat-'em-up Double Dragon II. Two games enter, only one can advance to the second round! Will it be maybe the greatest "unsung gem" in the history of the NES? Or will it be the sequel to the action classic, now with 100% more plot holes? It's a fun conversation, so please make sure to subscribe to make sure you don't miss a second of the action! Questions? A second Double Dragon release for 1990 lands on Game Boy... except not really. In Japan, Double Dragon II was presented as an expanded remake of the original Renegade—which is to say, Kunio-kun's first adventure. Acclaim and Technos gave it a facelift for western release a year later, turning into a Double Dragon game in name if not in fact. Still, while this "sequel" lacks some fundamental essentials found in the arcade game, it does allow for simultaneous play—so that's something. Also this episode: An equally rocky Japan-exclusive conversion of German board game Scotland Yard. Special thanks this episode to my nephew Speedy Playz for his help with the two-player video capture. This week Jurek and Earl are coming at you quarantine style! The guys are together but separate for this episode (and the foreseeable future) as they play Double Dragon II on the NES! Or rather, they play it via the Nintendo Switch NES Online App! The guys find this game to be pretty fun! The music is pretty great and it looks good for an NES game. The only complaint they have would be the controls. The attack buttons change depending on which way you're facing and it's incredibly frustrating! The guys also have a discussion question from a long time Reveler! Come have a drink with us! Cheers! NOTE: This episode was recorded on March 27, 2020. Since we had to use different gear than our normal setup to record this episode, please excuse any audio issues. Our levels are off and we were at the mercy of the internet! Hopefully we will get better at this quarantine style recording as we go on. Also, hopefully we don't have to do this too much longer! Thanks for understanding and we hope you all are staying safe and healthy out there. Thanks for listening, Revelers! ~Earl
Player 1 (Mel) and Player 2 (jonnymorgue) are the martial arts duo Billy and Jimmy Lee. They are famously known as the "Double Dragons". In this sequel - the brothers are avenging Billy's girlfriend Marian after she was shot to death by the antagonist Willy - the Shadow Warrior's leader. Willy is retaliating against the Double Dragons after his last defeat at the end of the previous video game, "Double Dragon". As they fight through street gangs, nunchaku-toting ninjas and giant mutant warriors while toting perfect hair - one enemy named, "Bolo" somehow continues to survive the attacks and always comes back for more. #milburtplays #doubledragon2 #beatemup #carefulwiththehair #feelthepowerofthemullet #youcantbeatmypomade #wethrewyououtofahelicopter If you liked our #DoubleDragon2 episode and were interested in following #jonnymorgue - check out their #Twitch! ► https://www.twitch.tv/jonnymorgue *This episode may contain adult content and language. The year is 19XX. The nuclear war was not friendly to the world. Yes, the quest to play all 30 games on the NES Classic continues! There's a "Double Quiz" courtesy of Sandwich Pope Phil, in addition to conversation about Billy and Jimmy. Now that the dust has long settled on the NES Classic Edition, Patrick and Mark return to the console to review it through hype-free lenses. 03:34:59 - Afsluiting
