In this episode, Sidney wraps up Mike Flanagan month by discussing an underrated film that carries a deep message about grief and loss, Before I Wake (2016).
Jacki and Marissa continue their deep dive into the Mike Flanagan Cinematic Universe (MFCU). The trace the writer/director's evolution through Hush and Before I Wake and once again gush over Flanagan's style and horror expertise. They explore how these films continue to highlight the origin story of the superhero and his later creations. They explore representation of disabilities and controversies surrounding that, and talk to the growing metaphoric horror that has become the hallmark of Flanagan's style. Will the ghouls ever find a Flanagan flick or series they do not love? Keep listening to find out! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Hello and welcome listeners to Episode 270 of Journey with a Cinephile: A Horror Movie Podcast. In this episode, your tour guide, David Garrett Jr., starts off January with doing his New Year, New Movie segment. The randomizer selected The Fourth Victim (1971). I also got a screener for The Damned (2024), that is making its wide release in 2025. This makes for a double feature of people being blinded by things around them, leading to interesting decisions. I also got to see these films for Mini-Reviews: You Are Not Me (2023), Thou Shalt Not Kill (2025), The Phantom of the Opera (1925), Stoker (2013), Before I Wake (2016) and a trio of shorts. They're not horror, but I wanted to support the teams behind them. These are Sundays With Dad (2024), After (2023) and Hard Truths (2023). I hope you enjoy coming on this journey with me! This conversation you are about to listen to, between Mike Flanagan and Mark Redfield, was conducted by phone while Flanagan was editing “Before I Wake” in 2015, and Flanagan was on pins and needles waiting on word that Stephen King would give his blessing for him to make “Gerald's Game”. Writer-director-editor Mike Flanagan made his first splash with horror films fans with his 2011 crowd-source-funded film “Absentia”. “Absentia” featured actors from Flanagan's student-film days, and genre favorite Doug Jones, the star of “The Shape of Water” and “Pan's Labyrinth” . His real break-out film in the horror genre was “Oculus” from 2014. Flanagan's next major film was “Hush”, released by Netflix in 2016. This lead to writing and directing an adaptation of Stephen King's “Gerald's Game” for Netflix and, eventually, to the adaptation of Shirley Jackson's novel “The Haunting of Hill House” for Netflix, released as a 10-episode film, in 2018. “The Haunting of Hill House” as won raves and accolades from fans and critics. Stephen King said, “ ‘The Haunting of Hill House', revised and remodeled by Mike Flanagan. I don't usually care for this kind of revisionism, but this is great. Close to a work of genius. I think Shirley Jackson would approve, but who knows for sure.” His latest series on Netflix is "The Haunting Of Bly Manor". Don't Forget To Subscribe! Before I Wake is a 2016 American horror film directed and edited by Mike Flanagan and co-written by Flanagan and Jeff Howard. The film stars Kate Bosworth, Thomas Jane, Jacob Tremblay, Annabeth Gish, and Dash Mihok. As with all my film episodes...SPOILER ALERT. You can watch the film on Netflix. Foster parents Mark (Thomas Jane) and Jessie (Kate Bosworth) welcome 8-year-old Cody (Jacob Tremblay) into their home. The boy tells Jessie that he's terrified to fall asleep, but she assumes it's just a natural fear for any young child. Mark and Jessie must now uncover the truth behind Cody's mysterious ability before his imagination harms them all. Chris & Kelsey get a cool gearing-up montage and cool new dream powers! The Classic Film: A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (1988) "Freddy Krueger returns once again to terrorize the dreams of the remaining Dream Warriors, as well as those of a young woman who may be able to defeat him for good” (IMDb.com). The Nightmare franchise starts to take a turn for the worse in this installment, but it's still not bad yet... surprisingly. The Modern Film: Before I Wake (2016) "A couple adopt an orphaned child whose dreams - and nightmares - manifest physically as he sleeps” (IMDb.com). Since this is a Mike Flanagan joint, you know that there is at least a minimum threshold of quality here, but the squandered potential, muddled metaphors, and theme that's about as subtle as a slap in the face make this easily the worst of his outings we've seen so far. Episode 60 - Director/Writer MIKE FLANAGAN On Screenwriting Don't Forget To Subscribe! For more great audio visit: http://www.RedfieldArtsAudio.com This conversation you are about to listen to, between Mike Flanagan and Mark Redfield, was conducted by phone while Flanagan was editing “Before I Wake” in 2015, and Flanagan was on pins and needles waiting on word that Stephen King would give his blessing for him to make “Gerald’s Game”. Writer-director-editor Mike Flanagan made his first splash with horror films fans with his 2011 crowd-source-funded film “Absentia”. “Absentia” featured actors from Flanagan’s student-film days, and genre favorite Doug Jones, the star of “The Shape of Water” and “Pan’s Labyrinth” . His real break-out film in the horror genre was “Oculus” from 2014. Flanagan’s next major film was “Hush”, released by Netflix in 2016. This lead to writing and directing an adaptation of Stephen King’s “Gerald’s Game” for Netflix and, eventually, to the adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s novel “The Haunting of Hill House” for Netflix, released as a 10-episode film, in 2018. “The Haunting of Hill House” as won raves and accolades from fans and critics. Stephen King said, “ ‘The Haunting of Hill House’, revised and remodeled by Mike Flanagan. I don’t usually care for this kind of revisionism, but this is great. Close to a work of genius. I think Shirley Jackson would approve, but who knows for sure.” His latest series currently ranked #1 on Netflix is "The Haunting Of Bly Manor".

We start with his breakthrough horror movie Absentia (2011), then review the long-delayed Before I Wake (2016), the tense thriller Hush (2016), and finally a duo of Stephen King adaptations: Gerald's Game (2017) and Doctor Sleep (2019). Rest assured, we have plans to cover Mike Flanagan's other horror works Oculus, Ouija: Origin of Evil and The Haunting of Hill House in the future. In the meantime, please enjoy this discussion of five works from a contemporary horror master, and stay tuned to the end of the episode for two special announcements! ** A PODCAST FOR FILM LOVERS AND PEOPLE WHO ENJOY A GOOD MOVIE ** This is Sorry! You're In My Seat, a weekly podcast which unites three best friends on the ultimate quest to find the greatest movies of all time ... simple. This week our heroes swap films that they think each other will like (well, that's what Aaron and James do). OK, so we've all been there. Your minding your own business when someone goes, "Hey, you like films! have you seen ..." etc. Or maybe your talking about films and someones goes "Mate, I can't believe you haven't seen {Enter film name} it's brilliant - You'll love it". This week our heroes take this particular dilemma head on in a good old fashioned film swap. In their most eclectic episode yet, Aaron recommends Moonrise Kingdom and Grand Budapest Hotel, James puts forward Enchanted and Lion, and for some unknown reason Sam recommends The House That Jack Built and Before I Wake. That's right, in this episode our heroes look at The House that Jack Built and Enchanted in the same show. Utter idiots. Its a full on film fest brought to you by three guys that really should start looking for a new hobby. All this and much, much more - so if you like this show tell your friends and leave us a lovely review :) thank you.
Join us as we discuss the Netflix original movie "Before I Wake" staring Kate Bosworth, Thomas Jane, and Annabeth Gish. Other topics discussed are Tony's hate for the letter C, and our pitch for a third Goofy movie. Please don’t sue us Mr. Mouse. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/alexis-saucedo/support
