Another NES classic coming this week.  None of us had played this as children, and stumbled into it later in life or just for this episode.  We didn't all love it, but I can definitely understand why this title was such a hit in it's day.  It doesn't take much for the sprite style to burn into your brain (I learned it from NES Dodgeball), and the system for progression was totally fresh and new, dare I say nothing like this had been done before.  Join Steve, Joe, and Sean as we recap our plays on River City Ransom for the NES!!  See you in the streets.

OctoRock (Adam) — Today at 9:46 AM My three favorite non-TMNT bmups are The Simpsons arcade game, Battletoads and River City Ransom. The Simpsons may actually beat out TMNT for me as far as the 4 player arcade experience goes. Just such a hilarious and well crafted game.  Battletoads speaks for itself, I'm not sure if it's a full blown bmup because of the platforming and speeder bike levels, but they teamed up with Double Dragon so that's gotta say something. River City Ransom is probably the only oddball here. A great semi-obscure NES game that thankfully a lot of people are now aware of thanks to River City Girls. One of my favorite NES titles and up there with Battletoads for me.   the Well-Red Mage — Today at 9:50 AM Shredders Revenge is AH MAH GAHHHHHHHH so good. A beat em up nobody gives enough love to is Fight N Rage. Seriously amazing.   ElPeeDee (Liam D) — Today at 10:09 AM mine has to be Batman Returns for SNES.  I loved the grabbing & throwing mechanics, breaking parts of the environment and the bat gadgets you could employ.  the sprite art was gorgeous and, while I hadn't even seen the movie at that point, I loved the characters   twodollarhero — Today at 10:25 AM For me, it's Scott Pilgrim. It's not the most mechanically dense beat-em-up, but I've come to realize that I prefer the River City Ransom approach of simpler gameplay, but a more fleshed out world with characters, shops, etc. Paul Robertson's artwork is gorgeous and the soundtrack by Anamanaguchi is among the greatest in video game history, full stop.   CrazyGreekDre — Today at 10:51 AM Turtles in time, Final fight both sNES and TMNT arcade game   ChrisHL94

Last week, we talked Super Mario Bros. Maybe you're wondering, 'where do you go after talking about one of the greatest Nintendo games of all-time?'   You talk about one of the greatest SEGA games of all-time! And that's what we're doing this week with the phenomenal beat 'em up; Streets of Rage 2.   Sometimes I struggle with playing a retro game for the first time nowadays, because their warts and imperfections just stand out so much more than they did back when the game released. But I gotta tell you kids - Streets of Rage 2 is every bit as playable today as it was in 1992. And that's really fucking playable.   My guest this week is my buddy Joe. He's a born and bred Sega kid, who grew up on a steady diet of Streets of Rage, and we blew so much smoke up this game's ass it looked like it was on fire. This might just be my favourite game on the Genesis, period.   And before we talk about rage filled streets, it's another edition of the Remember The Game Infamous Intro!    This time around, we talk about stuff like games that make us angry, but we play them anyway. I explain how much money I make on services like Patreon and Twitch, as opposed to how much those platforms take for themselves. And someone asks which console I've enjoyed more so far; my Playstation 5 or my Xbox Series X.   AND, we have another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One'. This time, it's the "beat 'em ups that aren't Streets of Rage" edition, featuring Double Dragon II, River City Ransom, and Battletoads.   Are you on social media? Of course you are. So follow us! River City Ransom won last month's Patreon poll, and I figured this would be a perfect time to cover it, because it'll get the horrible taste of last week's Shaq-Fu episode of out our mouths.    If you haven't played River City Ransom, it's a beat 'em up from way back on the ol' NES. You control little square headed guys and fight other little square headed guys to save your girlfriends (who I assume are also square headed). At a glance, it's just a funny looking button masher. But once you get into the game, you realize it has some RPG mechanics, tons of items and power ups to buy, and while it can be a little confusing without a manual or guide, it's a pretty fun game that might have been ahead of it's time.    I liked it. I don't know if I loved it. But I have good things to say. So does my friend Chris, who grew up paying ransoms in River City, and we'll tell you all about it on this week's show.   And of course, we have another edition of the Remember The Game Infamous Intro! This time, I get into stuff like censorship in video games (and all media, frankly), which Ninja Turtle would win a fight to the death over his brothers, is there a non-Nintendo franchise that's as consistent and frequent as Mario and Zelda, and more!   Plus, we have another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One'. This time, it's the 'Previous Patreon Poll Prevailers' Edition, starring Sonic Adventure, Shining Force, and Final Fantasy.   If you want to skip to something specific, here's where to go:   0:00 - 1:40 Intro    1:40 - 8:28  Initial self-indulgent rambling   8:28 - 30:50 'Blowing In The Cartridge' (Listener comments & questions, and Letter Time!)   30:50 - 41:22 'Play One. Remake One. Erase One.'   41:22 - 43:55 What have I been playing?   43:55 - 46:05 Listener's Shaq-Fu Memories   46:05 + River City Ransom Talk!   Enjoy the podcast!

In our fourth game rankings episode, we add Duck Tales, Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers, River City Ransom, Baseball Stars 2, and Final Fantasy Tactics to the list. This episode is coming out slightly out of order, so bear with me in that regards. We had a bit more space left in our storage for the month, so I thought sneaking in another episode would be a good idea. Instead of a Patreon, consider donating to our Extra Life charity drive. We are raising money for Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. We raised $335 in 2019. So far in 2020 we have raised $322. On Thursday nights around 7pm I stream old and new games until around 9pm. On Sunday nights I also stream around 9pm. Check out my Twitch page for more information and a tentative schedule. We are also on Apple Podcasts, Google Play, and Stitcher. Recently, games that Eddie Inzauto and Jason Fanelli have been playing are turning up the nostalgia dials, be it through familiar characters or mechanics. Yoshi's Woolly World, Mega Man Legacy Collection, Super Mario Maker, Minecraft: Story Mode, 20XX, Guns, Gore & Cannoli, and ChargeShot all remind us of some fond element of our gaming histories on this "Ultra" episode number 64 of the Versus Node Podcast. Ryan and Matt "Tackle Box" Amberg are back to talk about football fantasies, 2 Fast 2 Furious, Night at the Museum 3, and what they played of Team Fortress 2, The Mega Man Legacy Collection, Titanfall, and Pac-Man 256. Then maybe they talk some about Metal Gear Solid V's microtransactions, the GTAV Rockstar Editor on consoles, Rock Band 4 peripherals and new tracks, Back to the Future for current consoles, Star Fox Zero's release date, and the River City Ransom sequel that definitely still exists. "That's it?" you ask? "How on earth is it still an hour long?" you ask? Don't worry, if we have our way there will be a new cast (live or otherwise) for every day we're even marginally alive at PAX this week, so keep an eye out Friday through Monday, something intelligible will happen.

Eddie Inzauto and Sinan Kubba discuss the games they've been playing as of late. There's some old-school dungeon crawling, with a fresh take on controls in Diablo III (console version), there's some old-school roguelike play in the indie game The Depths of Tolagal, and there's some old-school machine-gunning in Gunslugs on OUYA. Then there's the Jackbox Party Pack, which does some fun things with party gaming, and Life is Strange, the first attempt at a Telltale-like adventure, but with time-bending mechanics. All this, plus a Bloodborne discussion. And of course there's the Treasure Chest of Cool Things. Eddie Inzauto, Jason Fanelli, and Dan Crabtree are joined (or were at the time of recording on August 26th, at least) by Big Red Potion podcast host Sinan Kubba on this episode of VS Node to chat about all of the different types of multiplayer that gamers have enjoyed over the years. What about games' multiplayer components make them so appealing, and which ones could we do without? What are the best examples of the different types of multiplayer out there, and which games, specifically, are our favorites? Inspired by Eddie's obsession with Dark Souls, this podcast covers far more than just the occasional message on the ground.
