Mark Pierce was a game designer at Atari and Bally Midway. We talk to him about the protracted development of Escape From The Planet of The Robot Monsters, the axonometric, somewhat baroque B-movie arcade adventure, and the conversely swift creation of the tile-stacking puzzler classic, KLAX. Pierce also shares some amusing anecdotes about scouting for muscular male models for the visually ground-breaking arcade beat-em-up, Pit Fighter, and provides us with a unique insight into why Atari faltered and ultimately folded in The Noughties.

Kirt Burdick is back with the second issue of his hyper-violent science fiction comic Galacto: Pit Fighter, “Requiem for a Humanzee.” It's good and bloody, but is it bloody good? Pit-Fighter. The name alone evokes such lucid imagery; shurikens, combatants in sweat pants and a tank top throwing motorcycles on a freeway overpass, and sticks. If you have the time, sit back and allow Jay and Mike to whisk you away to a 16-bit wonderland. A wonderland of digitized graphics and post-fight celebrations where defeating Sidewalk Jim gets you raised on a forklift while flexing and your adoring fans pile cash at your feet. Thank you for listening! We appreciate every one of you. The Wizard of Oz for the SNES continues our parade of hard to play games. Does this deserve to be one those iconically horrible games ranking up there with Shaq Fu, Bebe’s Kids, Lester the Unlikely, Bill Laimbeer’s Combat Basketball, and Pit Fighter? We might tell you. Or we might even debate that amongst ourselves. … Continue reading → The post Ep. 686 – The Wizard of Oz appeared first on TADPOG: Tyler and Dave Play Old Games.

Comics can surely be violent, but can the sheer audacity of the violence make it, intentionally or not, funny? Tim and Adam discuss one of the most over-the-top comics ever critiqued on our show, Kirt Burdick's Galacto Pit-Fighter!
The podcast is taking a rambling and conceptual route this week, with some discussion of changing perceptions of Our Thing within broader culture. Is the "Sure, kind of like Nine Inch Nails" explanation still accurate? From what background might newcomers be approaching crossover acts? Does keeping your club life separate from your day life still matter in a more forgiving age? All this plus some discussion of yet another Oscar win for Reznor & Ross, plus the passing of Anita Lane on this week's episode of We Have A Technical!

Welcome to the 6th Round Retro Post-Fight Show. This is the show that digs into the archives and gives you a comprehensive review of classic MMA events, that span as far back as UFC 1. Join Victor Rodriguez & Mookie Alexander as they deviate from the normal format of the show and rather than delving into an MMA event of yesteryear they are covering the FIGHT ZONE PPV (pay-per-view) event which aired on the “Action Pay-Per-View-Channel” in May 1995. The event was produced by boxing phenom Sugar Ray Leonard. Notable to pro wrestling fans would be the appearance of Tony Hale, who appeared in the WWF as Ludvig Borga in 1993. So let’s take a trip back to the mid-90s this week and check out this strange hybrid of mixed martial arts and pro wrestling tactics, complete with results, analysis, and of course a few laughs. As mentioned, this week we feature the May, 1995 ‘FIGHT ZONE’ PPV event, (last episode we covered BELLATOR 58: ‘Michael Chandler vs Eddie Alvarez’). This event can be viewed while we delve into the show on YouTube at: https://youtu.be/kH2VODfVmGI We start off the program with a totally nineties hype-train opener: “If raw, bare-fisted combat is what you crave – then enter the FIGHT ZONE! The most dangerous place on Earth!!!” The show went down from the “world famous Hollywood Palladium Arena” in California. Your ‘commentators’ were Danny Martinez and Cameron Fedder (a self-described underground fight devotee and fan of violence). The big name host of the show was none other than Eric Estrada (of television hit show C.H.I.P.S. fame), along with co-host Ray Leonard, Jr.. Their ‘Reporter on the Floor’ was Brad Fuller and their ‘Technical Advisor’ & Former World Karate Champion, Michael Jai White was on the scene for ‘fight insights’. They had a lengthy cast lined up for the event which included: Willie Anderson Jr aka: ‘Pit Fighter’, Adam Avoledo aka: ‘Badd Karma’, Clayton J. Barber aka: ‘Hollywood’, Richard Branden aka: ‘Daddy Rich’, Spitfire Brown aka: ‘Spitfire’, Michael Chaturantabut aka: ‘Captain Kick’, Genrri Diammante aka: ‘Henry’, Cameron Flener, R.J. Frost aka: ‘Flyboy’, Mitch Gould aka: ‘Mr. Smith’, Rickson Gracie, Tony Hale aka: ‘Viking’, Jeff Harris aka: ‘J.D. Harms’, Carlton Holder, Tom Howard, Howard Jackson, Pat E. Johnson, Kazja as himself, Tae-John Lee, Rae Manzon, Brad Martin aka: ‘The Plow’, Andre McCoy aka: ‘Cheap Shot’, Scott McElroy aka: ‘Bruce Burly’, Mario Mugavero, Hien Nguyen, Richard Notron, Mikael Paul Patrick O’Tighearnaigh aka: ‘Irish Assassin’, Chris Palermo, Erik Paulson, Eric Perrodin aka: ‘Phlash’, J.J. Perry, Matthew Pollino aka: ‘El Muerte’, Dennis Reese aka: ‘Garbage Man’, Burton Richardson, J.D. Rifkin aka: ‘Suit’, Cynthia Rothrock, Joe Son, Chad Stahelski aka: ‘Ski’, Nils Allen Stewart aka: ‘Mongolian’, Jen Sung, Lelagi Togisala aka: ‘Butch’, Takis Triggelis aka: ‘Genre’, Kenneth Turner aka: ‘KC Flow’, Don Wilson, and Marcus Young aka: ‘Tetsuo’. And you can’t forget, ‘The Easy Riders Leather Girls’. Yes, all of that talent appeared in under an hour. The show was produced by Seth Ersoff, Brad Fuller and Sugar Ray Leonard. Stunts performed by J.D. Rifkin with an on-site Stunt Coordinator, Jan Washburn. A popular television gimmick at the time was phone-in viewer interactivity, so the program invited the viewers to call their hotline after the show and vote for who they wanted to be the Champion, regardless them winning their bout or not. _______________________________ If you enjoy our show, "heart" us here on SC, or "like" & share over on whichever BE Presents Podcast Channel happens to be your listening platform of choice.

1993 is officially starting now! We're done with the specials for a bit and kicking off January 93 with Power Moves and California Games II. Power Moves is perhaps the first (but certainly not the last) fighting game that wants to be Street Fighter II but falls well short of that lofty goal. Still, it's not a complete flop and we'll tell you where we think the game succeeds and where it fails. It may be a long way from Street Fighter, but it's certainly no Pit Fighter either. We also discuss California Games II, a mini-game compilation that originated on personal computers and probably should have stayed there. It's not great, but at least it gives us a chance to talk about Epyx, the company that started the project that would become the Atari Lynx. As far as we know, January 93 only saw the release of four games on the SNES, so we're only covering two in this episode. We'll see ya next week to talk about the other two.

Sadly, our review of Super Scope Six will have to be put on hold for now. But we do break down Super Smash TV (for big money and big prizes!), Legend of the Mystical Ninja, and... uh... Pit Fighter.
The Spaghetti Boys get an unexpected and strange voicemail. They talk about the cancelled Area 51 raid, they try to find some gender fluid insults ( and fail). Jakub shows his cinema ignorance. They briefly discuss the Mortal Kombat movie. During the end of the world, what are some everyday items that would become extremely valuable. How long would the Crew actually last in an end of times scenario and they discuss various scenarios when it happens. The Spaghetti Boys are joined by their very first special guest; Actor, Stand-up comedian, and all around tall man, Nate Cox (@thatsnatecox) of The Nate Show Podcast. Its a crossover bonanza! On this episode we crown the inaugural 'Shreddy or Not' champion! The Crew talk about the things they could do as kids that kids absolutely cannot do today. They discuss how life has changed so much in such a short time. Why 18 is considered 'adulthood' and why it shouldn't be. Other various other topics seep through. The Spaghetti Boys record in the new studio and along with that brings you a various concoction of topics. Alex discusses Moon Knight and Jakub tells a story how he got banned from WoW Classic. Why hurricanes are given regular ass names instead of more fitting names. The Farmers Almanac is trash and Jakub doesn't know what Wonderlust means. We're not Bird Law experts, but you should not mess with the Top 10 Most Dangerous birds in the world! Have you ever wondered if in the Toy Story universe, the sex toys come alive? The Spaghetti Boys sit down to talk about the game changing experiment happening in the 'back yard' as a physicist is trying to open a portal to another dimension. Science jargon ensues. Board games are discussed. A new superhero is created as well as his nemesis and sidekick! It gets deep in the science but this may be the most depraved and downright random episode yet. This week Shawn talks with artist/webcomic creator Michael Schwartz of Oceanverse as they discuss his comic, some comic strip inspirations & history, attempting to reach audiences on the web, Seaquest, and the power of the Centurions cartoon. Later in the show Shawn has a conversation with Mike Pampinella & Monnie Aleahmad of Evil Money Comics as they talk about the road to indie comic creation, their first Anthology Comic Book, building books from the ground up, and old school arcade games. Enjoy, and always know that Pit-Fighter is an awful video game.
Johnny takes a quick look at games that feature men of the muscular persuasion; first there's Pit-Fighter, Atari's arcade classic from 1990 which used the then-impressive digitized graphics of musclebears, beefcake models, biker bears, and men in tight gear aplenty in a bare-chested brawling. Could anything be more heterosexual? Then we move to Altered Beast, the Genesis launch title that devotes itself to getting your big muscleman as pumped as possible before donning his were-whatever fursuit. Then Johnny takes on reviewing a hard to find Japanese PC release, Ie, Tatemasu! by Underground Campaign. As you can tell from the screenshots, this is unlike anything he's looked at before: it's a hardcore construction simulator. Keeping in mind load bearing pillars, wood density, and Tokyo Building Code, you must create a house within a strict time limit, while maintaining very, very, very close relations to your coworkers. Very close. Things get sticky, and you're up against a wall against the mounting pressure of time limits and budget overflows, but still worth playing. Repeatedly. 30 seconds to five minutes at a time. To wrap it all up, there's Punch Out!!, a game Johnny's so incredibly bad at that words fail to describe it. Oh, yes, there's also big bears, musclemen, and a possible appearance of the hanky code on Bear Hugger. (more)

Art Camacho's gritty story of redemption Half Past Dead 2, which stars professional wrestler Bill Goldberg and rapper Kurupt, hit stores last Tuesday. He joins us on this edition of the Your Video Store Shelf Podcast to talk about an assortment of topics. Like so many guests on this show, Camacho's journey into the world of filmmaking was not a typical one. Camacho began to learn martial arts as a teenager as a way of defending himself against the gangs of South East Los Angeles. He continued training into his adult years. Like so many accomplished martial artists in 1990's Los Angeles, Camacho was eventually asked to get the crap kicked out of him on film. He quickly learned the tricks of the trade of stunt work, and his workload increased. Soon enough he found himself being asked by PM Entertainment to not just do stunts, but choreograph the fight scenes in many of their movies. He has choreographed well over a hundred action scenes since then, and it was thanks to his success in that field that he found his way into directing. Half Past Dead 2 is Camacho's 14th film, with his earlier efforts including Gary Daniels' Recoil, Gangland, Sci-Fighter, and Point Doom. Topics include how he got attached to Half Past Dead 2, working with Andrew Stevens, the rhythm involved with fake fighting, his experience being PM Entertainment's fight choreographer, assembling almost a thousand extras in less than ten hours, the simple story of how he got into directing, his nervousness on his first day, his friendship with Don 'The Dragon' Wilson, bad kickboxing movies, blowing up cars, weak scripts, how long it takes him to appreciate his movies, how Andrew Dice Clay and Richard Grieco saved Point Doom, the eagerness of Angie Everhart, how great James Russo is, his very dangerous original plans for Confessions of a Pit Fighter, how he almost broke a gang truce, why we haven't seen that film, working with Flava Flav, getting his beat up in both Half Past Deads, and to close the show off, Art leaves me speechless. Fine show people. Get to listening!
