[Ep 103] This is third and final podcast all about Budapest, and we may have saved the best till last. In this episode we share three completely different experiences, but they are all incredible. Let's start at the most famous thermal baths in Budapest. Come inside the stunning yellow building that surrounds 18 different thermal pools, baths saunas and steam rooms. We tell you everything you need to know about enjoying your time here. Next, we discover a real hidden gem, Margaret Island, right smack bang in the middle of the Danube. This is a local's paradise filled with parklands, gardens, thermal baths, swimming pools, a zoo, musical water fountain, Japanese gardens, jogging track, restaurants, bars plus heaps more – you will want to hear all about it – we were blown away. Lastly, and probably our favourite day in Budapest was an amazing wine tour we did to a small wine region. We visited three different cellar doors, and they were so unique, one was an underground wine cellar that was 100's of years old. We cover lots of ground in this one – so buckle up and enjoy episode 103 all about Budapest. [Ep 102] This week Lyle and I are taking you to explore the Pest side of Budapest. This is where the biggest Parliament building in Europe is – with its interior like a palace. Also, this side of Budapest is home to the largest synagogue in Europe, the amazing, trendy Ruin Bars and the tragic Shoes on Budapest monument. You will hear about the popular Hero Square, the incredible St Stephen's Basilica with his mummified hand inside. You will also learn about the best Danube River cruise to take and when to take it and lastly, we share the yummiest and oldest Hungarian food you should try. If you would like to see the pictures inside the stunning Hungarian Parliament, the mummified hand of St Stephen or the views from the Danube River Cruise then click on the link to episode 102 here www.beachtravelwine.com/podcast/102/budapest Please enjoy this episode all about the Pest Side of Budapest. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/leanne-mccabe/message

Here are 10 things that I love about living in Budapest, Hungary as a digital nomad.
Today we're excited to welcome professional runner Ben Flanagan back to the show! It was about this time last year that we first got to know Ben (episode 95) after he signed his contract with On Running, but during this conversation he delivered an absolute masterclass on everything related to World Championships. Not only is Ben a wealth of knowledge on all things track, he also recently qualified for his first ever World Championship team. We recorded this interview just days before he travelled to Budapest Hungary for the 2023 World Track & Field Championships, where he represented Team Canada in the 5000m. On August 24th, Ben ran a strong & gutsy race finishing 11th in a field of exceptionally talented world class runners (in a time of 13:38.69). Unfortunately only the top eight advanced to the finals, but Ben has every reason to be proud of his debut performance on the world stage and we're pretty confident that we'll be seeing him in the Team Canada kit for many years to come. László (Laci) is a pastor in Budapest, Hungary. In addition to pastoring a local church, he leads a ministry which helps those caught in human trafficking to escape prostitution and experience lasting freedom. The south side of Budapest, where Laci ministers, is a working class area, known for high levels of crime and prostitution. In this episode, we discuss the theological foundations for "mercy ministries" and how Laci got involved in practical ministry to the poor and oppressed. Let's flash back to Budapest Hungary in 1944 where a little baby boy named Gabor lay crying in his crib. He wouldn't stop. Couldn't stop. His mother called the doctor who said, “All my Jewish babies are crying”. Nazis had taken over the country and killed Gabor's grandparents in Auschwitz. Gabor's dad was put into forced labor and his aunt was missing. Today we understand that Gabor was experiencing trauma through his mother's stress. His father thankfully returned after the war and when he was 12 years old, the family moved to Canada. Gabor went to the University of British Columbia before becoming a high school english teacher through the 60s and early 70s and then returned to university to become a doctor in 1977. Gabor spent over 20 years practicing family and palliative care medicine in the downtown Eastside of Vancouver -- a neighbourhood with one of the world's highest concentrations of drug addiction. Today Gabor is the bestselling author of In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts, Close Encounters with Addiction, When the Body Says No, Scattered Minds, Hold Onto Your Kids, and his brand new New York Times bestseller The Myth of Normal: Trauma, Illness and Healing in a Toxic World. I bought the book when it came out from Caversham Booksellers, which is North America's largest mental health bookstore and located in downtown Toronto. They told me Gabor had been by many times and proudly had all his books in the front window. I cracked it open and couldn't stop reading. Gabor is entrancing, passionate, and wise and I was thrilled to sit down with him at Penguin Random House headquarters during the Canadian leg of his international book tour. We discuss: play, love, Jordan Peterson, innocence, attachment parenting, Winnie the Pooh, father-son relationships, identifying and healing from trauma, curiosity and living, shifting attitudes, formative books, and much, much more… This conversation is a journey I don't think you'll soon forget. I find myself thinking about it nearly every day. Let's flip the page into Chapter 115 now… What You'll Learn: Why is loss of innocence so poignant? Why should we not give up play? How is love manifested? What is attachment parenting? Why is our culture so toxic? Why must we let kids manifest the full range of their emotions? How do you develop a strong father/son relationship? What is trauma? How can we begin healing from trauma? How can we build better connections with our children? How can we make sure we are meeting our children's needs? How do we balance curiosity and life? How should we choose to live? How can we learn to shift our attitudes towards events? Watching his older brother win the World Orienteering Championships at eight years old Marten Bostrom dreamed he would follow in his older sibling's footsteps; a silver medal in Budapest Hungary at the World Junior Championships in 2001 showed promise, as well as a Finnish junior record for his marathon debut of 2:25 at nineteen years old. His attendance at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff provided the perfect community to sharpen his track and cross-country skills while studying geology and cartography. This “Flying Finn” narrowly missed the Olympic marathon over two Olympic periods in 2008 and 2012, the latter miss due to bilateral Achilles tendon injury sustained while training in Kenya's Rift Valley. Undeterred, Marten returned to orienteering with renewed motivation as the world championships were to be contested in his home country of Finland in 2013. He would go on to fulfill a lifelong dream, winning gold in the 2013 World Orienteering Championships. He prefers the forest, mountains, and rugged terrain of trails, and enjoys his career of mapping new roads for his orienteering and outdoor community. Adrienn Tomcsanyi joins the show this week. Currently living in Helsinki, Finland - Adrienn grew up in Budapest, Hungary. The first time Adrienn got introduced to the bartending industry was back in her high school days when she studied hospitality and management back in the mid to late 2000's. It was during this time that Adrienn had an opportunity to travel to Poland and to Finland as an exchange student. This allowed her to expand her knowledge about bartending and other languages. While in Poland, Adrienn got her first job in the Industry working in a hotel bar called the Novotel Hotel. While working at Novotel, a Polish bartender taught her a few classic cocktails such as the Daiquiri, Mojito and Bloody Mary. It was at this time that Adrienn discovered she had a passion for cocktails and turn this love for drinks into a career. With her studies completed in 2011, Adrienn decided that her best method for her to grow was to leave Hungary and move to another country. As a result, Adrienn moved to the North of Finland where she worked in an authentic Finnish Hotel bar for a year. Shortly thereafter, she moved from the North of Finland to the capital city - Helsinki and try her luck out there. Adrienn spent several years there working in various restaurants and bars in the city centre. In 2017, Adrienn wanted to take her bartending knowledge and skills to the next level and attended a bartender school in her home town of Budapest Hungary. It was at this point that she expanded her knowledge in bar techniques, history of alcohol and spirts and learned a plethora of new recipes. Even though this was a short program, this provided Adrienn and solid foundation to take her bartending skills to the next level. At this point, Adrienne got a job at an airport bar where she had the opportunity to take over the direction of the bar. She was given the task to develop the winter bar menu. As a result of the success of her first bar menu, she had taken over the creation of the seasonal and permanent bar menus as well. In 3 years, Adrienn created 3 large bar menus along with several seasonal ones. During this time, as bartending had originally started as a hobby in her life - this slowly turned to a lifestyle and even more like a love. Since that time, whenever Adrienn has had an opportunity, she continually takes more courses, meets new bartenders, visits bar shows, and grabs every single chance to learn more about her passion in life. Recently, Adrienn got another job in the heart of Helsinki, in an Italian jazz bar and restaurant. In these Covid times, Adrienn spends a lot of time working on her social media as much as she can and takes as many online industry focused seminars as possible. In a hotel restaurant, through a translator, we spoke about: Glamour/erotic photography, Job security, Artistic freedom, Sol Lewitt, Jeff Koons, Outsourcing art production, Hiring a writer, Selling the story, Transcending your past, Prague sculpture Line, Public art, The importance of persistence, Leverage, Reputation is everything, Shock value, Popularity, and the idea that the whole world is your potential client, and the whole world is your potential competition. https://www.defrancescoart.com About French artist born in 1954, He lives and works between Prague (Czech Republic), Budapest (Hungary) and Aix-en-Provence (France).▪️A Multifaceted Artist Self-taught, atypical, and iconoclastic, Denis Defrancesco uses a whole range of techniques and materials to give form to his ideas, fantasies, and anxieties. A great ape in bronze, a giant plexiglass rabbit, a blow-up doll made of marble, a plastic Obama, a steel machine for slicing memories, a urinal in oil paint... He keeps giving the world his own twist, transfiguring reality to tell us stories: a childhood fear, a teenage memory, a passionate love affair, time fleeting, the body declining, death lurking. It is pop, electric, often bold, and always free. His work, both carnal and scientific, blends bronze with marble, paint with plexiglass, steel with plastic. He likes nothing more than mixing genres and spurning styles. Denis Defrancesco is an exalted introvert, an exhibitionist full of modesty, who creates an eclectic, surprising, insolent, and personal body of work with his monumental sculptures, 3-D paintings, and metamorphosized idols. A text accompanies each of his sculptures and paintings, like the key to a specific story. Please be sure to visit our Patreon page and help support the podcast by being part of the conversation.
