Scouser Tommies: Something Special

After another mad Monday night at St James's Park, Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are back to dissect that dramatic 3-2 win for the Reds over Newcastle United. The duo dive straight into the chaos that unfolded in the North East, where the Geordies tried their best to create a hostile atmosphere with their "get into them" banners and owner-led social media wind-ups. Did it all backfire spectacularly when young Rio Ngumoha broke their hearts with the winner in his Premier League debut? They don't hold back on Newcastle's behaviour throughout the summer during this whole Isak saga, culminating in what we saw on Monday. From booing Ekitike every time he touched the ball to their owners and management letting fans think they're the hard-done-by party in all this, the attempts at faking some long-standing bitter rivalry to get everyone up for the challenge was laughable by the end. Jay and Jim explore how being a one-club city might be doing Newcastle no favours, suggesting they're living in a bit of an echo chamber without the reality checks - with heaps of sarcasm usually thrown in - that come from having proper local rivals. Meanwhile, they dissect Simon Hooper's referee performance (did chest-cam put him off?) and that inevitable Anthony Gordon red card that had been brewing all night. Looking ahead, there's the small matter of Arsenal coming to Anfield this weekend, with another ref who's made a name for himself, Chris Kavanagh, in the middle - and the lads have plenty to say about that particular appointment. They also touch on the neighbours' new stadium down by the river (drink every time you hear ‘down by the river') and some of the teething problems Everton are having with their fancy new gaff. As always with Scouser Tommies, it's passionate, funny, and unapologetically red. The perfect listen for any Liverpool fan still buzzing from that last-minute winner and already looking ahead to the next battle. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Welcome dear listener to First State Kopites. It's August 27th. I'm Paul, joined by Daz. Little different today - just focused on reviewing the Newcastle game - 3-2 to the Reds. Lot to go at - hope to bring some perspective to what ends up being a nice, comfortable:()  win.Short version Newcastle turned this into a battle - with the rhetoric beforehand and the actions of certain players. I was fearful for our team's safety.Context - 2 very difficult games against them and their tactics last season. I think it plays into the cautious approach. One of harder aways anyway. And then there's Isak.Theme #1 - More defensive woes:Overall, their onslaught and carnage - words used by the commentator. Couple of chances around the 30 minutes mark, maybe 60 to 65 and then 85 to 95 there was lots of getting it launched. A Hooper call every time they fell down - 62% possession and still lost the foul count 17-15. Forever the minecraft man (Ref Cam). How about we call it both ways was Virg's clear message, but the cards for Liverpool were right, but they appeared a lot more latitude (Trippier, multiple Guimares fouls) Kerkez -  indefensible defending - aside from that was he OK?Konate - the high line for the goal - the unfortunate deflection. Missed passes, the unnecessary push on Barnes.Lots of long balls from us, weren't winning enough of the second ballsTheme #2 - the major characters in the battle:Some unhinged emotion out there - determined to intimidate Hugo EkitikeGuimares (yellow for dissent, nothing for all the fouls), Burn (yellow for 2 nasty little fouls on Mo) and then Gordon seemed determined to inflict physical pain on us. Aside from kicking Cody Gakpo in the head, not so much from Joelinton.Tonali - funny that he injured himself, needs a few lessons from Gordon.Note on time wasting - at 30 minutes self-aware Geordie pointing at his watch.Theme #3 - bright spots. The watch without the same jeopardy - Newcastle  0.98 xGAnother late winner against Newcastle. At 2-0 it looked so under control until the high balls/long throws finally have an impact - before 55, we look so comfortable.100th minute - best piece of footy, well if Curtis had connected with Mo's pass in the first half it might have been that.Rio, Ekitike, Gravenberch (his goal was not ‘out of nothing'), VVD, Dom! And Ali.Might take time to see the very best of Wirtz but there are some signsWe'll be back with a preview of the Arsenal game, and then a review of that match next week.. Liverpool kicked off their Premier League title defence in dramatic fashion as two late goals earned a 4-2 win over Bournemouth at Anfield. Arne Slot's side looked like they would have to settle for a point after surrendering a two-goal lead earned by Hugo Ekitike and Cody Gakpo. However, Federico Chiesa's late strike took the roof off Anfield before Mohamed Salah capped things off in injury time. Reds reporter David Lynch was in attendance to see the champions start a new season with a thrilling victory, and believes they deserve praise for battling through. Ekitike and the effective matchwinner Chiesa are singled out for their contributions as a result. However, there were also some concerning signs that had already been witnessed in pre-season and which Slot will need to iron out.
