Boise's music scene has evolved a lot in a decade. When Treefort Music Fest started in 2012, it was this very homegrown thing from a newly formed company called Duck Club, with mostly local music fans checking out mostly local and regional bands. Today, Treefort is still homegrown — but it has matured a lot while helping to put our music scene on the map. Every March, the festival brings thousands of people to downtown Boise — many from out of state — to see indie bands from around the world. But there's a new festival from Duck Club Entertainment that's truly made for us locals. Host Frankie Barnhill chats with Duck Club CEO Eric Gilbert all about the new Flipside Fest, which is going down this weekend (Sept. 23-25) in Garden City. They also chat about what makes this moment better than ever for Boise's music scene. Want some more Boise intel? Beyond The Fog Radio Season 3 launches NEXT WEEK! We couldn't be more excited to share more amazing stories from the Bay Area — and this will be our biggest season yet! To tide over our loyal listeners (and ourselves) for the next seven days, we have one more episode to revisit: our conversation with Naizar Mubarak, Executive Chef at Florio Restaurant in San Francisco (Season 2 Episode 12). Mubarak began his culinary career at age 19 in his home country of Sri Lanka. He moved to the Bay Area in 2006, and has since left his mark on restaurants like Marzano, Garibaldi's, Bocanova, and the Duck Club. Mubarak puts his own spin on his mother's recipes and native cuisine; at Florio, he mixes French and Italian dishes with Sri Lankan spices to create an eclectic, innovative, and oh-so-delicious menu. Join Susan, Michaela, and Jae as they look back at their interview with Naizar Mubarak — and we'll see you next week to kick off Beyond The Fog Radio Season 3!

Bill Agler spells out some of the joys and challenges that go along with belonging to a duck club.
Naizar Mubarak is a native Sri Lankan who used his love for cooking to find success in the Bay Area's culinary world. Mubarak began his career at the age of 19 working at the Galle Dutch Fort, a UNIESCO World Heritage site in Sri Lanka. He also worked for American actor and writer Charles G. Hulls, learning from Hull's private chef how to prepare food for European customers. After emigrating to the Bay Area in 2004, Mubarak worked his way through the ranks at various Oakland restaurants such as Marzano, Garibaldi's, Bocanova, and the Duck Club. Today, he is the Executive Chef at SF's favorite Florio Bar & Cafe. Mubarak's story would be incomplete without the influence of his mother's recipes and his native culture's culinary traditions. In Sri Lanka, everything is done manually and made with fresh, living ingredients. He learned from a young age to use everything he had, and even knew how to mix his own spices. With his mother's famous recipes and a love of experimenting with different flavors, Naizar gained an edge in the Western culinary world. Throughout the years, he's been praised for his creativity in blending different cultural flavors. At his restaurant Florio, he makes unique French and Italian dishes with Sri Lankan spices–– recipes that he has become widely known for. Naizar's cooking is elegant, innovative, and satisfying. To this day, his customers can still be heard exclaiming: “Yumm! What is this?” Meet Naizar Mubarak!

Following a beautiful morning's duck hunt on the south end of Utah's Great Salt Lake, local historian Jack Ray describes to Ramsey the history of the Rudy Duck Club and other venerable duck camps in the basin. The sign above them reads, "So fowl and fair a day I have not see." Why were so many great duck camps established way back when and why do they still exist? Located in one of the driest states in the US, how are many of these properties managed and, importantly, what would likely happen if they ceased to exist? What's so special about the boats used and how do camp amenities reflect the boats importance to hunting this these type properties? This interesting episode concludes the Utah portion of Ramsey's 2020 North American Waterfowl Tour. Duck Season Somewhere episodes will resume on Monday, December 28. Have a very Merry Christmas! David Bowen Southwoods Duck Club My guest today is David Bowen of Southwoods Duck Club. David and I met on Instagram not too long ago, the thing that drew me to David’s page is I noticed he ran his operation out of the Mississippi Delta, which many of you know where my duck hunting heart is. As I got to know David, I learned he is a husband, a father, a brother in Christ and a Delta cotton farmer. David and I had a great conversation about something that I knew very little about and that is farming cotton. I’ve been around enough farmers to learn a little about farming beans and rice and corn, but never about farming cotton so this to me was really interesting. We talked a lot about creating habitat and making properties more attractive to hungry wintering mallards and David actually gave a really good tip for you that hunt flooded corn. He does something very interesting with his water levels to maximize the attraction of his corn crops so listen closely for that. My favorite food source to hunt over is smartweed or barnyard grass. I’ve said before, if it grows in water, chances are it’s a great duck attractant and food source and we talk about that as well. We get into what I think is the most important component of a successful duck hunt, and that is scouting. I know some of you guys are probably rolling your eyes cause you think you don’t have to scout, we go to the same few blinds on our private ground so we don’t need to scout. For the other 98% of you guys listening, pay special attention because a lot of the guys that I have hunted with, especially on the Delta public ground I hunted, were good at finding ducks, but they weren’t effective in scouting for a successful duck hunt. Now you may say what are you talking about. Stick around and listen because David and I discuss the difference in finding ducks and scouting for a good hunt. We finish up talking about Southwoods Duck Club as a public hunting club, we talk about why guys come to Southwoods, what you can expect when you go, lodging meals everything. Personally I am drawn to outfits like Southwoods that know what their focus is and don’t go outside of their core competency, and Southwoods focus is a smaller, relationship focused operation, often one group at a time, max of 8-10 guys and they are going to give you and your bro’s a great experience in camp and in the blind, you’re going to feel like you are hunting with guys that you’ve known your entire life. That’s the kind of camps and clubs I love and hearing David and his passion for the Delta and for making new friends, I can’t wait to get up to Southwoods this year. Oh yeah, we also talk about that one thing that Greyducks do that just drive you nuts so listen for that as wellInstagramWebsite
