    Ivy Insights

The Fowl Life podcast is a must-listen for any waterfowl hunting enthusiast. As someone who has been a follower of Belding since his very first TV episode, I was excited to discover this podcast and have been hooked ever since. The best aspect of this podcast is the wealth of amazing information it provides for beginner callers. Through several eye-opening episodes, I have dramatically improved the way I operate both duck and goose calls. The hosts, Chris and Chad, have an incredible knowledge of the subject matter and their passion for ducks and the outdoors is infectious.

One of the standout features of The Fowl Life podcast is its ability to inspire listeners in their hunting gear choices. After hearing the sounds that come out of a Jargon live duck on the podcast, I immediately fell in love with it and ordered one for myself. This podcast not only educates but also helps listeners make informed purchasing decisions based on real experiences shared by the hosts.

However, there are a few aspects that could be improved upon in The Fowl Life podcast. One potential downside is that as a new listener to podcasts, I found it difficult to navigate through all the episodes without proper organization or categorization. It would be helpful if each episode had clear titles or descriptions so that listeners can easily find topics they are interested in.

In conclusion, The Fowl Life podcast is an incredible resource for waterfowl hunting enthusiasts. From its wealth of educational information on calling techniques to inspiring gear choices, this podcast delivers valuable content every episode. Despite some organizational challenges, Chris and Chad's passion shines through in their discussions on ducks and the outdoors, making this a must-listen for anyone looking to enhance their waterfowl hunting skills or simply enjoy engaging conversations about their favorite pastime.

In part two of this two-part conversation, Chad continues the deep dive with Mark Hennelly of California Waterfowl Association, picking up where they left off with the questions every hunter has wondered. They discuss the data on drakes vs. hens, and whether restricting hen harvest actually makes a difference in breeding success. And of course, they circle back to pintails, diving even deeper into why raising the limit is about more than numbers, it's about keeping hunters in the field and building the next generation of waterfowlers. Mark connects the dots between farming, irrigation, conservation, endangered species, and something that will surprise you, and how misplaced priorities on a certain fish are costing ducks their habitat and, in some cases, their lives. If you care about the future of hunting, this is one you need to hear. And if you're not a member of California Waterfowl, now's the time—no matter where you live. You've probably heard that hunting has to shut down before mating season—but is that really the full story? They also dive into what makes California such a powerhouse for bird hunters..Not just ducks, but geese, turkeys, quail, and more. From extended seasons to special hunts, Mark explains why the Golden State is still one of the best in the country. Of course, they talk pintails, the kings of California, and why raising the bag limit matters more now than ever. If you've ever asked yourself, “Do bag limits actually help the population?” or “Why are we still stuck at one pintail?” you're going to want to hear this. We ain't sugarcoatin' it—waterfowl hunting ain't easy to get into. The gear, the regs, the access, the learning curve... it's enough to turn folks away before they ever get a decoy wet. But in this episode, we sit down with the badasses from California Waterfowl Association who are making damn sure the tradition doesn't die on our watch. From youth camps to veteran hunts, college outreach to first-time field days, the CWA crew is putting in the work—boots on the ground, blinds in the mud, boats in the Delta—to welcome a new wave of hunters into the lifestyle. We're talkin' about the full-circle moments, the tear-jerking first retrieves, and the look in a new hunter's eyes when the first greenhead backpedals over the spread. You'll hear how programs like Duck Camp and the Hunt Program are opening gates that used to be locked shut. Real access. Real mentorship. Real opportunities to chase specks, sprig, and mallards in some of the most iconic ground in the flyway. This one's a reminder of why we do it—and who we're doing it for. It's not just about the straps. It's about preserving the culture, passing it down, and makin' sure this lifestyle stays alive for generations to come.
