Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: How difficult is AI Alignment?, published by Samuel Dylan Martin on September 13, 2024 on The AI Alignment Forum. This work was funded by Polaris Ventures There is currently no consensus on how difficult the AI alignment problem is. We have yet to encounter any real-world, in the wild instances of the most concerning threat models, like deceptive misalignment. However, there are compelling theoretical arguments which suggest these failures will arise eventually. Will current alignment methods accidentally train deceptive, power-seeking AIs that appear aligned, or not? We must make decisions about which techniques to avoid and which are safe despite not having a clear answer to this question. To this end, a year ago, we introduced the AI alignment difficulty scale, a framework for understanding the increasing challenges of aligning artificial intelligence systems with human values. This follow-up article revisits our original scale, exploring how our understanding of alignment difficulty has evolved and what new insights we've gained. This article will explore three main themes that have emerged as central to our understanding: 1. The Escalation of Alignment Challenges: We'll examine how alignment difficulties increase as we go up the scale, from simple reward hacking to complex scenarios involving deception and gradient hacking. Through concrete examples, we'll illustrate these shifting challenges and why they demand increasingly advanced solutions. These examples will illustrate what observations we should expect to see "in the wild" at different levels, which might change our minds about how easy or difficult alignment is. 2. Dynamics Across the Difficulty Spectrum: We'll explore the factors that change as we progress up the scale, including the increasing difficulty of verifying alignment, the growing disconnect between alignment and capabilities research, and the critical question of which research efforts are net positive or negative in light of these challenges. 3. Defining and Measuring Alignment Difficulty: We'll tackle the complex task of precisely defining "alignment difficulty," breaking down the technical, practical, and other factors that contribute to the alignment problem. This analysis will help us better understand the nature of the problem we're trying to solve and what factors contribute to it. The Scale The high level of the alignment problem, provided in the previous post, was: "The alignment problem" is the problem of aligning sufficiently powerful AI systems, such that we can be confident they will be able to reduce the risks posed by misused or unaligned AI systems We previously introduced the AI alignment difficulty scale, with 10 levels that map out the increasing challenges. The scale ranges from "alignment by default" to theoretical impossibility, with each level representing more complex scenarios requiring more advanced solutions. It is reproduced here: Alignment Difficulty Scale Difficulty Level Alignment technique X is sufficient Description Key Sources of risk 1 (Strong) Alignment by Default As we scale up AI models without instructing or training them for specific risky behaviour or imposing problematic and clearly bad goals (like 'unconditionally make money'), they do not pose significant risks. Even superhuman systems basically do the commonsense version of what external rewards (if RL) or language instructions (if LLM) imply. Misuse and/or recklessness with training objectives. RL of powerful models towards badly specified or antisocial objectives is still possible, including accidentally through poor oversight, recklessness or structural factors. 2 Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback We need to ensure that the AI behaves well even in edge cases by guiding it more carefully using human feedback in a wide range of situations...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: AI Constitutions are a tool to reduce societal scale risk, published by Samuel Dylan Martin on July 25, 2024 on The AI Alignment Forum. Sammy Martin, Polaris Ventures As AI systems become more integrated into society, we face potential societal-scale risks that current regulations fail to address. These risks include cooperation failures, structural failures from opaque decision-making, and AI-enabled totalitarian control. We propose enhancing LLM-based AI Constitutions and Model Specifications to mitigate these risks by implementing specific behaviours aimed at improving AI systems' epistemology, decision support capabilities, and cooperative intelligence. This approach offers a practical, near-term intervention to shape AI behaviour positively. We call on AI developers, policymakers, and researchers to consider and implement improvements along these lines, as well as for more research into testing Constitution/Model Spec improvements, setting a foundation for more responsible AI development that reduces long-term societal risks. Introduction There is reason to believe that in the near future, autonomous, LLM based AI systems, while not necessarily surpassing human intelligence in all domains, will be widely deployed throughout society. We anticipate a world where AI will be making some decisions on our behalf, following complex plans, advising on decision-making and negotiation, and presenting conclusions without human oversight at every step. While this is already happening to some degree in low-stakes settings, we must prepare for its expansion into high-stakes domains (e.g. politics, the military), and do our best to anticipate the systemic, societal scale risks that might result and act to prevent them. Most of the important work on reducing societal-scale risk will, by their very nature, have to involve policy changes, for example to ensure that there are humans in the loop on important decisions, but there are some technical interventions which we have identified that can help. We believe that by acting now to improve the epistemology (especially on moral or political questions), decision support capabilities and cooperative intelligence of LLM based AI systems, we can mitigate near-term risks and also set important precedents for future AI development. We aim to do this by proposing enhancements to AI Constitutions or Model Specifications. If adopted, we believe these improvements will reduce societal-scale risks which have so far gone unaddressed by AI regulation. Here, we justify this overall conclusion and propose preliminary changes that we think might improve AI Constitutions. We aim to empirically test and iterate on these improvements before finalising them. Recent years have seen significant efforts to regulate frontier AI, from independent initiatives to government mandates. Many of these are just aimed at improving oversight in general (for example, the reporting requirements in EO 14110), but some are directed at destructive misuse or loss of control (for example, the requirement to prove no catastrophic potential in SB 1047 and the independent tests run by the UK AISI). Many are also directed at near-term ethical concerns. However, we haven't seen shovel ready regulation or voluntary commitments proposed to deal with longer-term societal-scale risks, even though these have been much discussed in the AI safety community. Some experts, (e.g. Andrew Critch), argue these may represent the most significant source of overall AI risk and they have been discussed as 'societal scale risks', for example in Critch and Russel's TARSA paper. What are these "less obvious" 'societal scale' risks? Some examples: Cooperation failures: AI systems are widely integrated into society, used for advice on consequential decisions and delegated decision making power, but...

What's it like to take a punch? Host Trevor has never been in a fight in his life, until now. This week Trevor follows his curiosity to Pan Am Boxing Club, the oldest boxing club in Winnipeg. That's where he discovers that at this fight club, they're changing lives. Every two weeks the rainbow and trans flags fly in the non-profit gym when Jesse Jordan leads the Umbrella boxing program for 2SLGBTQ+ community, challenging the binary nature of the sport and changing the face of boxing. Next door to the boxing club, Pan Am Place is described by resident Kyle Grenier as “a big house with lots of dudes who like to fight.” He then laughs heartily as he is corrected by former resident Will Bress, “I would also call it a sober living house.”  Run by the people who lead the gym, men who struggle with homelessness, addiction and incarceration can live at Pan Am Place rent free if they work out at the gym, volunteer their time, and actively strive to improve their lives. Hear how friendships are formed, lives are changed and what advice Will offers Kyle as he prepares to move out.Twice a week Chris Sarifa drives from his job, as manager of Pan Am Place, to the north end of the city where he opens the doors to the free North End Boxing Club for kids aged 12-17. From the boy with the lisp who's gaining confidence to the kid who needs to let his “inner tiger” out, this club is helping keep these kids safe and making them strong.Back in the gym, volunteer trainer Tia Jakab brings her six week old baby, Olive, to Pan Am Boxing Club for the very first time. We discover this former competitive fighter has had two concussions and is struggling with her desire to get back in the ring, and her need to stay safe for her daughter. Harry Black has been involved with Pan Am Boxing Club almost since it opened in 1968. As President and head trainer Harry, and his wife Susan Black, built the non-profit gym into the volunteer-based high performance place it is. At 67, he's never stopped training as a fighter, and has high expectations for everyone who comes through the doors. They share what it took to build Pan Am Place, and their visions for the future. It's finally time for Trevor Dineen to get in the ring to throw (and take) his very first punch ever. With his self-appointed coach, Harry Black, in his corner, Trevor steps up to his opponent, Dylan Martin, a fighter with Canada's national team. Can he go toe to toe?

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: A Model-based Approach to AI Existential Risk, published by Samuel Dylan Martin on August 25, 2023 on The AI Alignment Forum. Introduction Polarisation hampers cooperation and progress towards understanding whether future AI poses an existential risk to humanity and how to reduce the risks of catastrophic outcomes. It is exceptionally challenging to pin down what these risks are and what decisions are best. We believe that a model-based approach offers many advantages for improving our understanding of risks from AI, estimating the value of mitigation policies, and fostering communication between people on different sides of AI risk arguments. We also believe that a large percentage of practitioners in the AI safety and alignment communities have appropriate skill sets to successfully use model-based approaches. In this article, we will lead you through an example application of a model-based approach for the risk of an existential catastrophe from unaligned AI: a probabilistic model based on Carlsmith's Is Power-seeking AI an Existential Risk? You will interact with our model, explore your own assumptions, and (we hope) develop your own ideas for how this type of approach might be relevant in your own work. You can find a link to the model here. In many poorly understood areas, people gravitate to advocacy positions. We see this with AI risk, where it is common to see writers dismissively call someone an "AI doomer", or "AI accelerationist". People on each side of this debate are unable to communicate their ideas to the other side, since advocacy often includes biases and evidence interpreted within a framework not shared by the other side. In other domains, we have witnessed first-hand that model-based approaches are a constructive way to cut through advocacy like this. For example, by leveraging a model-based approach, the Rigs-to-Reefs project reached near consensus among 22 diverse organisations on the contentious problem of how to decommission the huge oil platforms off the Santa Barbara coast. For decades, environmental groups, oil companies, marine biologists, commercial and recreational fishermen, shipping interests, legal defence funds, the State of California, and federal agencies were stuck in an impasse on this issue. The introduction of a model refocused the dialog on specific assumptions, objectives and options, and led to 20 out of the 22 organisations agreeing on the same plan. The California legislature encoded this plan into law with bill AB 2503, which passed almost unanimously. There is a lot of uncertainty around existential risks from AI, and the stakes are extremely high. In situations like this, we advocate quantifying uncertainty explicitly using probability distributions. Sadly, this is not as common as it should be, even in domains where such techniques would be most useful. A recent paper on the risks of unaligned AI by Joe Carlsmith (2022) is a powerful illustration of how probabilistic methods can help assess whether advanced AI poses an existential risk to humanity. In this article, we review Carlsmith's argument and incorporate his problem decomposition into our own Analytica model. We then expand on this starting point in several ways to demonstrate elementary ways to approach each of the distinctive challenges in the x-risk domain. We take you on a tour of the live model to learn about its elements and enable you to dive deeper on your own. Challenges Predicting the long-term future is always challenging. The difficulty is amplified when there is no historical precedent. But this challenge is not unique; we lack historical precedent in many other areas, for example when considering a novel government program or a fundamentally new business initiative. We also lack precedent when world conditions change due to changes in technology, ...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Ten Levels of AI Alignment Difficulty, published by Samuel Dylan Martin on July 3, 2023 on The AI Alignment Forum. Chris Olah recently released a tweet thread describing how the Anthropic team thinks about AI alignment difficulty. On this view, there is a range of possible scenarios ranging from ‘alignment is very easy' to ‘alignment is impossible', and we can frame AI alignment research as a process of increasing the probability of beneficial outcomes by progressively addressing these scenarios. I think this framing is really useful, and here I have expanded on it by providing a more detailed scale of AI alignment difficulty and explaining some considerations that arise from it. The discourse around AI safety is dominated by detailed conceptions of potential AI systems and their failure modes, along with ways to ensure their safety. This article by the DeepMind safety team provides an overview of some of these failure modes. I believe that we can understand these various threat models through the lens of "alignment difficulty" - with varying sources of AI misalignment sorted from easy to address to very hard to address, and attempt to match up technical AI safety interventions with specific alignment failure mode scenarios. Making this uncertainty clearer makes some debates between alignment researchers easier to understand. An easier scenario could involve AI models generalising and learning goals in ways that fit with common sense. For example, it could be the case that LLMs of any level of complexity are best understood as generative frameworks over potential writers, with Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF) or Constitutional AI (CAI) selecting only among potential writers. This is sometimes called ‘alignment by default'. A hard scenario could look like that outlined in ‘Deep Deceptiveness', where systems rapidly and unpredictably generalise in ways that quickly obsolete previous alignment techniques, and they also learn deceptive reward-hacking strategies that look superficially identical to good behaviour according to external evaluations, red-teaming, adversarial testing or interpretability examinations. When addressing the spectrum of alignment difficulty, we should examine each segment separately. If we assume that transformative AI will be produced, then the misuse risk associated with aligned transformative AI does not depend on how difficult alignment is. Therefore, misuse risk is a relatively bigger problem the easier AI alignment is. Easy scenarios should therefore mean more resources should be allocated to issues like structural risk, economic implications, misuse, and geopolitical problems. On the ‘harder' end of easy, where RLHF-trained systems typically end up honestly and accurately pursuing oversimplified proxies for what we want, like ‘improve reported life satisfaction', or ‘raise the stock price of company X', we also have to worry about scenarios like Production Web or What Failure looks like 1 which require a mix of technical and governance interventions to address. Intermediate scenarios are cases where behavioural safety isn't good enough and the easiest ways to produce Transformative AI result in dangerous deceptive misalignment. This is when systems work against our interests but pretend to be useful and safe. This scenario requires us to push harder on alignment work and explore promising strategies like scalable oversight, AI assistance on alignment research and interpretability-based oversight processes. We should also focus on governance interventions to ensure the leading projects have the time they need to actually implement these solutions and then use them (in conjunction with governments and civil society) to change the overall strategic landscape and eliminate the risk of misaligned AI. In contrast, if alignment is...

The Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office said it is sending its condolences to the family of Tyre Nichols and will recognize the right of Gwinnettians who chose to peacefully protest — but it insists the events that led to Nichols death in Memphis, Tenn., do not represent all law enforcement. The sheriff's office issued a statement on Friday night after Memphis police released body cam videos showing police officers kicking, beating and pepper spraying Nichols during a traffic stop on January 7. Nichols later died from his injuries and five Memphis police officers were fired for their roles in the incident, and then charged with second-degree murder this past week. “The Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office is saddened by the tragedy that resulted in the death of Mr. Tyre Nichols,” Gwinnett Sheriff's Office officials said in a statement. “We send our heartfelt prayers and sincerest condolences to the family, friends, and close associates of Mr. Nichols. “The actions that occurred on January 7 are unacceptable and do not reflect law enforcement standards and procedures. Although this incident took place in another state, the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office acknowledges the hurt, anger, and distress it has caused.” The release of the videos Friday night had law enforcement across the nation preparing to face protests over the Memphis police officer's treatment of Nichols, but also concerned that the protests could turn violent. Nichols family has urged people upset over his death to only protest peacefully. Half of the Gas South District — including its ballroom — was closed in 2022 because of a major renovation. But the convention facility still managed to have its best year financially in its three-decade history, according to officials at the center. The Gwinnett County Convention and Visitors Bureau Board of Directors received an update on the Gas South District's 2022 financial situation as well as event attendance this past Wednesday. What they heard from Jennifer Silas, who is the center's executive director of finances, is that net revenues hit an all-time high last year. Even if grant funding that the Gas South District had received during the pandemic was taken out of the equation, the center's revenues last year would still be one of its best years financially in its history. The Gas South District, which is set to open the newly renovated portion of its building on Wednesday, had net revenues of nearly $5.1 million last year. The Gas South District brought in $8.3 million from event revenues and nearly $6.8 million in other operating revenues, for a total of nearly $15.1 million in gross income. When the center's officials were budgeting for 2022, by comparison, they only planned to bring in $9.6 million last year. On the expense side, the Gas South District had $10 million in expenses last year. And, that was with only half of the Gas South District being open to the public while the other half, including the ballroom, was stripped down to its skeleton and rebuilt. The renovated portion of the center is set to reopen to the public with a grand opening celebration this week. The first events in the renovated ballroom are set to take place on Thursday and Friday. Meadowcreek junior Champ Thompson committed Saturday to the Clemson University football program. The 6-foot-2, 275-pound defensive lineman is a four-star recruit in the 247Sports composite rankings, which have him as the Number 34 player in Georgia and the No. 241 player nationally. He was a second-team all-county and first-team all-region selection last season for Meadowcreek's state playoff team. He had 38 tackles (seven for losses) and three sacks. He is the son of former Atlanta Falcons lineman Michael Thompson. He joins a Tigers program that has several sons of NFL players, including former Atlanta Falcons running back Jamal Anderson's son, Jamal Anderson Junior, who will be a freshman linebacker this season at Clemson after a stellar career at Mill Creek. State Senator Nikki Merritt of Grayson, will lead the Gwinnett County Senate Delegation for the next two years while two freshmen state senators will join her on the delegation's executive board. The county's Senate delegation elected its executive board on Wednesday. Merritt will serve as the chairwoman while state Senator Nabilah Islam from Lawrenceville, and Shawn Still, from Norcross, will serve as the vice-chairwoman and secretary respectively. In addition to Merritt, Islam and Still, the other members of Gwinnett's Senate delegation include Senators Kim Jackson, from Stone Mountain; Clint Dixon from Buford; Gloria Butler, also of Stone Mountain; Bill Cowsert, from Athens; and Sheikh Rahman, from Lawrenceville. Mountain View's wrestling team won the North Metro Invitational at Brookwood on Saturday. The Bears finished with a 131 points to finish ahead of runner-up Lassiter's 123.5 and third-place Marietta's 114.5. They also won the junior varsity division. Ryan Rodgers and C.J. Beckford-Duffus were Mountain View's weight class champions, while Dylan Martin, Anderson Kesinger  and Lex Hennebaul  had second-place finishes. Gilbert Balbuena of Brookwood was the 120 champion, Dacula's Ethan Ross took first at 126 and Parkview's Antoine Glasgow won at 138. A couple known for their philanthropy will be recognized by the Gwinnett County Public Library System in March for their efforts to support libraries and the broader community. Clyde and Sandra Strickland have been named Public Library Champions as part of the 2022 Georgia Public Library Awards. The Gwinnett library system said it will hold a celebration at 11 a.m. on March 21 at the Duluth library branch to honor the couple. "The Stricklands are huge advocates for the library system," Gwinnett County Public Library Director of Development and Community Partnerships Jason DiFranco said. "Their focus is advancing education and literacy, so it has always been a perfect marriage for us. Clyde Strickland founded Metro Waterproofing, which serves the construction industry in the southeast, and the couple has, among other things, been big supporters of Northside Hospital Gwinnett, where the heart center is named in their honor. Hi Everyone, This is Episode 25 of the Get in My Garden Podcast, a chat with Radical Mycologist, Dylan Martin about Mycology, Mushroom Tech and the Frontier of Mycology. It has been a while since the last episode, as I have been consumed my my work at the farmers markets, planning my new soil health business and researching desperately needed new sound equipment for this podcast. The focus has always been to feature local experts, hobbyists and successful small business creators who work with the earth in unique ways. Next year, podcast content and interviews will focus on organic gardens and gardening, sustainable high-impact small farming, permaculture, the soil food web, landscaping, plant collecting, farmers' market businesses, and so much more. Great things are planned for this podcast. Going forward, it will have tighter and shorter episodes and ocassionally feature short crossover videos on youtube and facebook with content to support the episodes. With new microphone equipment and better editing, this podcast will continue at the end of this year. Please subscribe now on iTunes or your favorite podcast app so you will know when the new episodes are up and so you can listen to it in its new format! Also, the private facebook group I founded 6 months ago called, Soil Balance with Microbes, Minerals, Fungi, Fertilizers, Inoculants and Bugs, has grown to over 3000 people already. So as I mentioned earlier, I am working a website to sell all the components of soil building, including microbes and fungi that do tremendous things for people who are seeking soil health in their gardens or those interested in the soil food web. I envision this somehow being connected to the podcast, so will find experts to speak about soil throughout the year! I hope to use facebook stories within the group when the subject matter fits and to use social media more strategically with all these projects to make them better and give you listeners more of the content that you really want. Now, on today's episode, we chat with Radical Mycologist, Dylan Martin, who is part of a fast growing movement of people from basically every walk of life who are passionately involved in learning from the enormously diverse fungus kingdom, working with them and spreading this movement. We casually chat about mycelium, the fungal world, fungal studies aka the neglected mega-science, and what you need to know about it all. There are so many great ideas right now in business and technology using fungi to address our most critical problems: ecological, human health, economic, and so many more. Hope you enjoy this episode. The chat was really fun and totally interesting. And let me remind you that this will be the last episode with the old single mic and that new equipment will be fixing most of the sound quality issues going forward. Dylan will be back for more mushroom talk later in the year. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/get-in-my-garden-podcast/message

Why hello startup nation, and welcome to Episode 26 of the Early Stage Podcast. If you're tired of listening to shows full of wildly successful entrepreneurs telling tales of grandeur and more interested in hearing early stage entrepreneurs share their war stories, milestones, fundraises, and pivots, then you've found a home. My name is John Valentine, or @JohnnyStartup on Twitter, and I'm your host. By day I'm scouting aerospace, space, defense, security, and transportation startups for Thales xPlor, the Boston-based innovation unit for French multi-national Thales, and by night I interview top entrepreneurs seeking the best part of the hockey stick. The February #InnoSprint experiment continues with Dylan Martin, Tech Writer for Bostinno. We'll cover FitBit's acquisition of Twine Health, Amazon's acquisition of Blink, MEMS microphone startup Vesper, and new blockchain startups Algorand and Talla. The main dish of today's podcast is an interview with RadioPublic Co-Founder and CEO Jake Shapiro. When I launched the podcast last year, I was surprised that Apple provided no listener analytics, didn't offer creative content curation for listeners in their podcast app, and most importantly, and didn't allow me any insights into who was a part of my listener community or how I could engage them. RadioPublic not only solves these challenges, but also just launched a "paid listens" program to help all podcasters get paid for their efforts. Jake was an amazing host at the PRX Podcast Garage, a converted Jiffy Lube fitted out with all the best podcasting equipment. The Garage has become a center-point for podcasting in the region, which has grown tremendously since its launch. Oh, and the audio quality for our chat is amazing. Enjoy this weeks pod!

If you listen back to the first few episodes, you'll hear me ask founders where they think they'll be in twelve months. One year seems like a long time in startupland, but it actually goes by in a flash. Patrick Boyaggi and Mike Tassone, Founders of RateGravity and guests on our first episode ever, discovered just that. In this inaugural 1-year lookback, we discussed their $2M funding round with Listen Ventures, Accomplice's BOSS Syndicate, and others, examined how other players in the market can interfere with potential deals, analyzed which marketing channels are most effective in a highly competitive environment, and talked about the value of the human touch in a tech-dominated industry. Their online home mortgage platform made major strides in 2017, but there is still a ton of work left to do. Before we jump into the conversation, I wanted to give you all a little taste of the tech conversations I usually have over beers with Dylan Martin, Tech Writer for Bostinno. Early Stage and our friends at Bostinno are testing 10-minute "InnoSprints" at the top of each episode in February. This InnoSprint will cover grocery startup Takeoff Technologies, wearable startups Nix and Whoop, student loan benefits startup FutureFuel, and MIT's Intelligence Quest AI initiative. Let Dylan and I know what you think of the new bit @DylandLJMartin and @EarlyStagePod on Twitter. That's all for now! Enjoy this week's show.
