Happy New Year! For our first episode of 2024, we decided to read and talk about a new series from 2023: W0rldtr33 by James Tynion IV, Fernando Blanco, Jordie Bellaire, Aditya Bidikar, and Dylan Todd (edited by Steve Foxe). This science fiction horror story is by one of the biggest writers in comics at this particular moment. We haven't really talked about any Tiny Onion books on our podcast before, so we figured we'd try to get with the times. In this episode, we discuss W0rldtr33 volume 1, which collects the first five issues of the series. Have you read it? Have you read many other Tiny Onion comics? What do you think? If you have any thoughts, comments, questions, or corrections, we're here. Feel free to hit us up on our socials, or email us! We have a Linktree here: linktr.ee/betweenthegutters Thanks again to Corey J. Beats for producing our theme music. Check out all of his music on various platforms here: linktr.ee/Coreyjbeats

Former co-host and now PM&R Doctor Cole Cheney returns for a discussion of what he's discovered about the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, which rewards careers in public service by forgiving student loans after 10 years of qualifying work. The first 11 years have passed since its inception, and you'll never guess how many people have had their loans forgiven. Aline Sandouk, Dylan Todd, Brady Campbell, and financial aid counselor Chris Roling were on hand for a discussion of why you'll want to have a backup plan to pay off your med school debt. A study looks at whether we're ready for whole genome sequencing as a screening tool for newborn babies. We discuss whether teenagers are capable of withstanding the rigors of medical school. And an we explore the 'confidence gap' between men and women in medicine and whether it's even important. Are you a woman who has been counselled to lean in and act more confident? Call us at 347-SHORTCT anytime, visit our Facebook group, or email theshortcoats@gmail.com. We'd love to hear from you!
We're super pleased to welcome designer extraordinaire Dylan Todd to the show this week to discuss not only the comic book logos he's created, but also lots of other comic logos from over the decades! We also talk Star Wars bounty hunters, what got Dylan into design, comic book design trends, and a lot more! Plus, a generational Panel President segment
Recorded at Emerald City Comicon, listen to The Fine Print Crew tell you all about being part of the comic book machine and how their cogs fit into the final product. Moderator: David Brothers Panelists: Zack Davisson, Ryan Ferrier, Lauren Sankovitch, Marissa Louise, Dylan Todd, and Samantha Cross
In this week's episode of Off Panel, cartoonist Kyle Starks joins the show to talk his new comic at Image, Rock Candy Mountain. Starks discusses what appealed to him about the hobo treasure hunt genre, the tropes of rail travel, researching hobo culture, when the song "Big Rock Candy Mountain" came into play, world building, the realities of hobo life, the language in the book, the impact of colorist Chris Schweizer and designer Dylan Todd, overcoming the perceptions of his "cartoony" art style, his process for bringing an issue to life, before the episode comes to a close with serious basketball talk starting around the 52 minute mark.
Happy Thanksgiving! The crew--John Pienta, Marc Toral, Dylan Todd and new guy Jay Blomme--were lucky enough to hear from a couple listeners about our recent post-presidential election episode. For instance, Kayla called 347-SHORTCT to say thanks; we presume she had more to say, but she got cut off. We continue our discussions on logic and logical errors, considering the efforts that Facebook and Google are making to reduce the effects of 'fake news.' John has some suggestions on how to have a productive conversation with people whose opinions you don't share. Dylan is the master of strange analogies that ultimately are right on target. We discuss one idea in DIY medicine we might be able to get behind, a device that allows women to take some control of their breast reconstruction journey. And we mark the passing of 'The Radioactive Boy Scout,' David Hahn, who attempted to build a working nuclear reactor in his back yard as a teenager. And some podcasters who couldn't join us this week send in their thoughts on what they'd do with an extra day no one else could mess with. Listeners, share your thoughts with us each week. Call us at 347-SHORTCT any time, and see our Facebook page for a question to consider every Monday.
Graphic designer and writer Dylan Todd is here for the third installment of our Star Wars trilogy, to talk about Return of the Jedi. A defense of the Ewoks, an excoriation of "Jedi Rocks," and some more talk about what a cool dude Han Solo totally is. All this and Dylan's Emperor Palpatine impression too.
This Thanksgiving, why not enjoy a Cthurkey while you contemplate the many health hazards embodied by America's favorite celebration of gluttony? And if you are a future radiologist, you might be as demoralized as Ellie Ginn, Tony Rosenberg, Dylan Todd, and Kaci McCleary were to learn about a UIowa/UC-Davis study that finds pigeons are just as good at it as you'll ever be. The new heroin epidemic has caught the attention of Iowans, and the UI hosted a conference this week in the hopes of figuring out what to do about it. Meanwhile, if you're still unsure about the health benefits of coffee, a Harvard study of 208,501 health care providers' risk of mortality shows you're better off throwing back several cups a day, so pass the creamer. And thanks to Kaci's melodious voice, Dave has a new ringtone. We need validation. Lisa Wehr, Kaci McCleary, Dylan Todd, and Marc Toral discuss things of much import, such as why Dave's iPad lock screen is a pile of dangerously toxic potatoes, and why it's important to use the correct pronunciation of gyros but not other foods from foreign lands. Also, uterus transplants are about to become a thing surgeons do in the US. What about that Ben Carson, amiright? He's one smart cookie. Docs like him are now able to use ultrasound to deliver chemo drugs through the blood-brain barrier without being all stabby about it. And the Federal Office of Research Integrity hands down its verdict on former Duke researcher and HHMI investigator Anil Potti–hint: he's not a great researcher, but he can still be an oncologist, so long as he stays in North Dakota, we imagine. Cory has found something to enable Dave's plan to hang a portrait of himself somewhere in the medical school, which leads (somehow) into a discussion of Corbin Weaver's deep loathing for visitors of the Louvre and Kaci McCleary's similar feelings for commercial art. And Corbin shares with Kaci, Marc Toral and Dylan Todd a very special experience she had with a patient that really enabled her to experience a patient's point of view…from about floor-level. John Pienta has an profound moment with a patient, one which crystalized for him a sense that he's doing exactly the right thing in his life. Meanwhile (being full of profundity this week) he brings Marc Toral, Dylan Todd, and Corbin Weaver good news–that we are not alone in the universe. Maybe…Marc's not buying it. Whatever, science boy, this changes everything. Also, the things we're learning about ebola after the infection seems to subside are interesting, and they lead Dave to surmise that we're all screwed. Lisa Wehr teaches Kaci McCleary and Dylan Todd about the invention of the shipping container. We look forward to the day when humans are replaced by robots in the workplace so people can pursue their real dreams. On the other hand, we rage at the work-world gurus who suggest that we behave in a way that our bosses would fire us for (he's looking at you, four-hour-work-week, follow-your-dreams spewers). Aline Sandouk has an exciting announcement about her medical studies–one that means she's going to be on the show forever–and we explore the value of clinical versus basic science research. Dave rewards his podcasters with a tasty treat. Though this may be a new definition of the words ‘tasty' and ‘treat' of which Marc Toral, Dylan Todd, Emily White, and newbie Alex Volkmar were previously unaware. And as a special bonus, we offer lots of lovely lip smacking sounds for our listeners. Meanwhile, the world's first head transplant is closer to reality as a date and a recipient have been chosen by the Italian neurosurgeon we last spoke of in March. Dylan Todd, Marc Toral, Eric Wilson are on hand to give advice to caller Todd, who is just beginning his journey from community college to medical school. Is the advice we give any good? Well, we tried, and that's all that counts. Also, we discuss researchers' discovery that it's possible to cause hallucinations just by staring into someone else's eyes for 10 minutes. Try it! Don't be weird, get permission first; maybe even start by introducing yourself. Also, it's time to brush up on your cyber-security skillz, as a group demos how it might be possible to hack pacemakers and such. From the vibrant Boulware Learning Community, Kaci McCleary, Aline Sandouk, Dylan Todd, and Lisa Wehr discuss Yelp's new hospital reviews and ProPublica's Surgeon Scorecard. And we talk about why science and science facts fail to persuade people to believe the truth. Are emotional appeals better used than facts to teach people about medical truths? Is scientific fact as irrelevant now for most people as it was in the early part of the 20th century? Also, we got a super nice comment from a listener on Facebook, which made Dave ‘a little misty-eyed.' And an important recommendation for your next binge-watching session. We need validation. Dylan Todd joins the team, along with Aline Sandouk, Marc Toral, and Cory Christensen to talk about magic. Specifically, whether there is a role for it in medicine. How far should we go in accepting the unknown as valid in treating sick people and in medical research? Complementary medicine, the placebo effects, cochlear implants, many drugs…all (maybe? usually? not always?) work but we don't always know why or how. Also, we discuss how data from fitness wearables have been used in court recently as evidence. Meanwhile, Facebook thinks Marc is into endurance tickling contests, and Aline and her partner seem to be down with that. We need validation. The Eisner nominations are out and we’re having a roundtable this week to talk about ’em! We invited ComicsAlliance pals David Wolkin and Dylan Todd to talk about what was missing, what people have been saying is missing, what’s surprising, the shifting nature of digital comics, and a ton more! Also, we divide ourselves into two camps in regards to Chris Ware, though we all find Building Stories just a little big daunting.
