Recording Live at the recent Los Angeles Comic Con, Artist Ronald Wimberly discusses his project with the legendary Scotch Whiskey company, Ardbeg. The intersection of Scotch and comics may not seem like a natural one at first, but as Ronald discusses the project with Ardbeg National Brand Ambassador Cameron George, the overlap between these two distinctive artforms, making comics and making scotch, become apparent. You'll hear the panel in it's entirety and then a quick on-on-one with Jace and Ronald highlighting some of the points discussed on the panel. The press release for the event is below.   LOS ANGELES, CA (November 18, 2022) - Ardbeg, the famous Islay distillery known for pushing the boundaries of whisky-making, announced today its plans to bring bold, tasteful fan experiences to L.A. Comic Con from December 3-4. Showcasing the brand's first-ever, limited-edition graphic novel, titled Planet Ardbeg, whisky enthusiasts and weirdos alike will take part in an immersive, one-of-a-kind experience into the world of Ardbeg.   Planet Ardbeg features three distinct tales inspired by the flavors and origin stories of three Ardbeg expressions – Ardbeg Ten Years Old, Ardbeg An Oa and Ardbeg Wee Beastie. L.A. Comic Con attendees will immerse themselves in the 40-page sci-fi anthology through the tales of “Guardians of Oa,” “The Best Laid Schemes” and “Take it with a Grain of Sand” during a specially crafted and otherworldly drinking experience.   Attendees will be presented with three paths representing the three distinct tales drafted from the unique qualities of three whiskies: 10 YO, An Oa and Wee Beastie. The experience leads guests through a hallway into a series of inlets and rooms where they encounter various environments they interact with based on the graphic novel. The cocktails will be served during a private tasting. Guests will need to reach out to planetardbegrsvp@bhimpact.com in order to gain access to the “invite-only” post-event tasting hours taking place on Saturday and Sunday from 4pm - 6pm PT.    The graphic novel was conceived by cartoonist Ronald Wimberly, Emma Rios and Sanford Greene., each bringing their own distinctive voice and style to the project. Using three expressions in Ardbeg's Core Range as their creative launchpad, together they produced an anthology of tales as bold and unique as Ardbeg itself, featuring a land of giant botanicals and even bigger beasts. Traversing the triptych of fantastical tales is the Quantum Distiller, who journeys across time and space gathering ingredients and inspiration to concoct the ultimate dram through the three stories influenced by Ardbeg expressions.   Available online via ReserveBar, fans can also experience the three whiskies the novel is based on - Ten Years Old, An Oa and Wee Beastie - at home.   The Planet Ardbeg graphic novel will be available for purchase at the Ardbeg Distillery Visitor Centre, in select comic book shops as well as via Ardbeg.com in certain markets.  A digital version will also be available exclusively for members of the Ardbeg Committee to read (at no cost) at Ardbeg.com/planet-ardbeg.   Fans can stay up-to-date with the latest news by following Ardbeg at @ardbeg_usa on Instagram. For more information, please visit: https://www.ardbeg.com/en-US/planet-ardbeg      # # # About Ardbeg Ardbeg prides itself on being The Ultimate Islay Malt Whisky. Established in 1815, Ardbeg is revered by connoisseurs around the world as the peatiest, smokiest and most complex of all the Islay malts.  Despite its smokiness, Ardbeg is renowned for its delicious sweetness, a phenomenon that has affectionately become known as ‘the peaty paradox'. During the 1980s and 1990s, Ardbeg suffered from an uncertain future and it was not until the brand was purchased by The Glenmorangie Company in 1997 that the Distillery was saved from extinction.  Since then, the Distillery has risen like a phoenix and today Ardbeg is well established as a niche, cult malt, with a passionate following.    Responsible Drinking Ardbeg and The Glenmorangie Company advocate responsible drinking and suggest that drinkers savor Ardbeg whiskies in moderation and in line with recommended daily guidelines for alcohol consumption.

At 100 episodes, we will ALL be getting tattoo's to commeorate what should be, a 5 year podcast at the time!! No interviews for this show, so, it's back to our roots! Jon celebrate his 1 year anniversary of owning his comic book store the day before we recorded. So he goes in a little bit, on how that feels, and what it's like to own your own small business! Gabe and Juan saw Doctor Strange, and ruined it for Jon, who may or may not EVER go see it in the theater. We also talk about Gabe's LOVE for Emma Rios, and there is MUCHO laughs! We sound like teenage girls during this entire episode!! For our #PopCultureClassics segment, we talk about The Rocky Horror Picture Show! This is a movie that we get into a little deeper, as Gabe and Jon really enjoy the movie, but Juan does not. We all discuss why, and it seems to get a little deep, which is the perfect conversation for this segment!! This also leads us to a discussion of the new version of this movie as well. Gabe is the only one of the three of us, who has seen in, but it seems to follow the original very closely! We obviously read the feedback from our listeners, which are a mixed back of like/dislike. It's quite a polarizing movie! Great conversation for this movie, and we were all glad to have watched it again! Remember, you can ALWAYS let us know what you think! We can only think of so many things to talk about every other week, and would LOVE to get some feedback and ideas from all of you out there who are listening!! This is the first year that all three hosts have been at Denver Comic Con for all three days, so we bring you coverage for the whole show! We stop people all over the show so that they can tell us about their costumes, and what they are excited for throughout the show!! You won't want to miss our conversations with the amazing Kenshi, the costumed Elvira, and so many more people! We also bring you TWO amazing interviews!! The first interview comes from Top Shelf Production's, Benjamin Frisch! He tells us about his novel, The Fun Family! This full color graphic novel has been getting rave reviews, and Gabe absolutely loved reading it before he spoke with Benjamin!! Benjamin also talks to us about his experience in France, and trying to expand his knowledge, in an area that was different, but in a great way!! You definitely need to go check out his novel, it's worth the read for sure! The second interview is with the LEGENDARY Joe Keatinge! Joe is freaking hilarious, and works perfect for our show because he is one that will just speak his mind, and tell you what he thinks! We spent a good chunk of this interview speaking about his awesome book, Ringside! Joe, apparently, is a pretty big wrestling fan! He said "I've been preparing to write this book, not knowing I would write it, for my whole life" talking about Ringside, and him watching wresting. Of course, you can't have a conversation with Joe, without talking about the stellar, Shutter! He talks about working with a friend of the show, Leila Del Duca, and also has great things to say about Emma Rios! The second not to miss interview of this episode, and a HUGE catch for our show!! Remember, you can ALWAYS let us know what you think! It's Wednesday, which means that the Doctoral Duo return to share their recommendations of recent releases! And this week, Gwen and Derek focus on three exciting, yet quite diverse, new titles. They begin with Nick Dranso's Beverly (Drawn & Quarterly), a series of six stories set in a Midwest suburban landscape, where individuals grapple with friendships, alienation, and the uncertainties of growing up. Gwen notes the dark poignancy of these narratives, character studies that often make the reader uncomfortable and made all the more effective through Dranso's clean lines and simple illustrative style. What struck Derek was the book's construction. This isn't a "traditional" collection of separate stories -- something like you would find, for example, in Eleanor Davis's How to Be Happy or Adrian Tomine's Killing and Dying -- but a text more akin to a short-story cycle, a collection of discrete stories, each of which could stand on its own, but all interconnected in such a way that a fuller meaning is generated by their textual proximity. Derek's term for this hybrid form within comics is "graphic cycle," and a classic example of this would be Will Eisner's A Contract with God. All of the narratives in Beverly connect in some way, and over time, through a few key characters. This debut graphic novel from Dranso is this week's highlight for both Gwen and Derek. Next, they check out the first issue Emma Rios and Hwei Lim's Mirror #1 (Image Comics). This story is part of the 8House universe, and the two begin with a brief discussion of that context. Both enjoyed this first issue -- especially Lim's elaborate design and watercolor art, which is truly stunning -- but found the setup a little confusing, at times. As Derek points out, this first issue lacks the amount of exposition necessary to fully grasp what is going on, although it's assumed that many of these narrative questions will be answered in the issues to follow. While both cohosts appreciate Mirror, they feel that those prone to trade waiting might want to wait until the complete arc is collected. Finally, Gwen and Derek wrap up with a look at Ryan Ferrier and Daniel Bayliss's Kennel Block Blues #1 (BOOM! Studios), the first of a four-issue limited series. This is a wild anthropomorphic tale about a kennel as prison, and about a protagonist unable to deal with reality on the inside. Oliver is not sure why he is sent to the Jackson State Kennel, and in times of uncertainty he retreats into a happy place, a technicolor fantasy world of dancing figures and catchy tunes reminiscent of the old Merrie Melodies or Fleischer brothers cartoons. As with Mirror, the art stands out in Kennel Block Blues, with Bayliss adeptly handling the transition between the dark kennel and Oliver's song-happy fantasy world. But Ferrier's writing in this first issue is equally impressive, providing just enough setup to satisfy, yet leaving the reader with eager expectations for the next installment.

FIGHT! [poll id="185"] VOTE Capote in Kansas Murder. Not intricately plotted "whodunit." Not fiery passionate fury. But dirty, sad, disturbing actions from real people. That's what Truman Capote decided to use for In Cold Blood - his bold experiment in the realm of the non-fiction "novel." Following in that legacy is Capote in Kansas, a fictionalized tale of Capote's time in Middle America researching his classic book. Capote's struggles with the town, the betrayal, and his own troubled past make this book a compelling portrait of one of the greatest literary talents of the 20th century.
