I sit down with the Awkward Angler herself, Erica Nelson, from west of Denver in Crested Butte, Colorado. Erica is a flyfishing guide in the Valley with a Lynch Syndrome story and so much more. Erica also does consulting on diversity, equity and inclusion with her own podcast. The organization Brown Folks Fishing has a number of programs around conservation, but also looking at leadership roles. Angling for All addresses inequality in fishing, talks about reconciling and navigating our own identities and creating action. True diversity work is in the recovery. Erica is the second indigenous flyfishing guide in Colorado. I learned about Hozho, the term for balance and beauty in everything. The loss of her mom unexpectedly coincided with pain that caused her to get checked and she had cancer. She had a hysterectomy, and learned she inherited MLH1 from her father. Erica is balancing the grief of losing her mother and the changes in her body. Erica disclosed that she postponed her urgent surgery to go on a trip to Brazil that she had been planning for some time. Obviously she's ok, so...good decision/bad decision.
How did the galaxies form and how can we learn about them? Professor Erica Nelson of the University of Colorado, Boulder tells us how we use the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to look back in time and learn about the initial formation of structure in the universe.
In this episode, we chat with Erica Nelson, also known as The Awkward Angler. Erica's journey into the great outdoors wasn't always a straightforward path. Growing up, she had little interest in outdoor activities. The idea of getting hot and sweaty outside just didn't do it for her. However, everything changed during her college years when she decided to enroll in a yoga elective. Yoga introduced her to mindfulness and a deeper connection with herself. One day, she took her practice outdoors, and the experience changed everything. Erica's newfound appreciation for the outdoors led her to explore hiking. With each bend in the trail, she discovered new wonders and a growing sense of curiosity. Her adventurous spirit eventually led her on a backpacking journey in Alaska, an adventure that evolved into a search and rescue mission. Yet, even this experience failed to deter her passion for the outdoors. Driven by her insatiable curiosity, Erica delved into outdoor education, eventually discovering her love for fly fishing. Not only does she pursue this passion wholeheartedly, but she also shares it with others, particularly women, to ignite their own curiosity for the great outdoors. If you've ever wondered how leaning into your curiosity can lead to boundless adventures, then this one's for you! Life in Motion is brought to you by Actual Outdoors. Something as small as a lost parking ticket can set off a chain reaction. If you don't pay it, your license could get suspended. Get pulled over while driving on a suspended license? Now you're in legal trouble. If you lose your car, how do you get to work? Without a job, how do you pay the rent? LIFT Wisconsin saw that Madisonians needed an easier way to deal with legal problems that were haunting them, keeping them in poverty. The non-profit legal organization built a website to help you identify any legal issues you might have and connect you with lawyers to sort them out. We speak with Erica Nelson, LIFT Wisconsin's executive director, about why this is needed. Also on the show: ⛱️ Check for current beach closures around Madison.
In this episode of the Anchor Up & Chill Podcast, I sit down with someone who I consider family, Erica Nelson, fellow Brown Folks Fishing ambassador, fly fishing guide, and host of the "Awkward Angler" podcast. Not only is she smart, funny, friendly, blunt, and thirsty for manhattans, she loves the outdoors and challenging herself with all things scary. Never one to back away from something that makes her feel AWKWARD! We share our love for Taco Bell, how she started REAL Consulting, her journey into learning and teaching fly fishing, and laugh...a lot. Did I mention she is smart? Oh...and single but you need to be over 55 and NOT like fly fishing. New galaxies discovered using the James Webb telescope are raising questions about how a galaxy is formed. We talk to Erica Nelson, an astrophysicist with the University of Colorado and part of the team that discovered these new galaxies.
Inside The ‘Chaos Machine' Of Social Media Despite social media's early promises to build a more just and democratic society, over the past several years, we've seen its propensity to easily spread hate speech, misinformation and disinformation. Online platforms have even played a role in organizing violent acts in the real world, like genocide against the Rohinga people in Myanmar, and the violent attempt to overturn the election at the United States capitol. But how did we get here? Has social media fundamentally changed how we interact with the world? And how did big tech companies accumulate so much unchecked power along the way? Read an excerpt of The Chaos Machine: The Inside Story of How Social Media Rewired Our Minds and Our World here. Taking On Renewables' AC/DC Disconnect In the push to transition society to more renewable energy sources, there are several logistical challenges. One central question involves the best way to connect solar panels and battery storage—which both produce direct current, into an energy grid that primarily provides alternating current at the local level. Dr. Suman Debnath leads a project called the Multiport Autonomous Reconfigurable Solar power plant (MARS) at Oak Ridge National Lab. He and his colleagues have designed a system of advanced power electronics that allow large, utility-scale solar facilities and battery storage projects to feed either AC or DC power, as needed. The approach, Debnath says, will both allow for better integration of those electric resources into the grid, and make it more possible to transport power long distances using more efficient DC transmission lines. Debnath talks with Ira about the MARS project, and ways to modernize the country's power distribution system for greater reliability and efficiency. Are These Ancient Galaxies Too Big For Their Age? We've all been wowed by the amazing images from the James Webb Space Telescope, or JWST. But sometimes, the important data isn't in those amazing galactic swirls or wispy nebula images, but in the images of tiny smudges from far, far away. Astronomers recently described some of those smudges, tiny red dots thought possibly to be ancient, distant galaxies, in the journal Nature. However, if the red dots do in fact represent galaxies, they appear to be too large to fit predictions for how fast galaxies form. The possible galaxies may be about 13 billion years old, forming just 500 to 700 million years after the Big Bang, but appear to contain as many stars as much more mature galaxies. Dr Erica Nelson, an assistant professor of Astrophysics at the University of Colorado, Boulder and one of the authors of that paper, joins Ira to talk about the observation and what could explain the confusing finding. How These Russian Wasps Could Help Save Ash Trees How do you find an insect the size of your fingertip in a densely packed forest? For Jian Duan, the answer is simple: Follow the dead ash trees. On a rainy day in eastern Connecticut, Duan, a federal research entomologist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, walked to a dying ash covered with holes. Peeling back the bark with a drawknife, he revealed a mess of serpentine tunnels. Curled up inside was one of his targets: a larva of emerald ash borer. “Let's collect it,” Duan said, gesturing as his assistant handed him a pair of tweezers tied to a brightly-colored ribbon. (In case you're wondering, the ribbon makes the tweezers easy to spot when they're dropped on the leaf-covered ground.) But today Duan isn't just collecting emerald ash borers. He's also looking for their predator, one released here on purpose in 2019 and 2020: a wasp known as Spathius galinae (pronounced spay-see-us glee-nuh). “It's from the Russian Far East,” Duan said, smiling. “Unfortunately, there are no common names for these parasitic wasps.” To read the rest, visit sciencefriday.com. Vocal Fry Serves Up Treats For Toothed Whales Toothed whales—species like orcas, bottlenose whales, and dolphins—use echolocation to zero in on prey about a mile deep into the ocean. Until now, scientists couldn't quite figure out how the whales were making these clicking sounds in the deep ocean, where there's little oxygen. A new study published in the journal Science, finds the key to underwater echolocation is vocal fry. Although in whales it might not sound like the creaky voice that some people love to hate, the two sounds are generated in a similar way in the vocal folds. Ira talks with the study's co-author, Dr. Coen Elemans, professor of bioacoustics and animal behavior at the University of Southern Denmark based in Odense, Denmark. Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.
Six potential galaxies that shouldn't exist have been found in images captured by the James Webb Space Telescope. It's the work of an international team of astrophysicists. Erica Nelson, professor of astrophysics talks to Jesse.

Erica is a self-taught angler and fly-fishing guide passionate about sharing her learning journey.Topics We Discussed What advice would you give BIPOC to begin exploring the outdoors? What's your favorite part of being a fishing guide? What is the Angling for All Pledge?Ah Ha MomentLast year was an incredible year for me professionally, and I ended up launching and registering Awkward Angler as a business. I was getting so much work with public speaking and different articles and things, and I think it was finally when I was bombarded after the New York Times article came out. Doing this interview, and then once it came out, it was like, wow, this is a big national publication, and my inbox blew up with different things and opportunities. At the end of the year, being invited on this VIP Brazil fishing trip down in the Amazon. And it was a very, very luxurious trip to catch some Peacock Bass. And I'm like, this is my job right now. This is pretty awesome. To eat Brazilian food, drink cocktails, and then catch these awesome, beautiful fish in the Amazon. So, that was a pretty awesome experience.Insight2goI didn't think this was much of an insight until I had a friend reach back out to me recently and say, you've said this, and it stuck with me, which is, if it's not fun, don't do it.Media & Resourceshttps://www.landconserve.org/news/2022/12/learning-on-the-waterhttps://www.fieldandstream.com/fishing/erica-nelson-fly-fishing-interview/https://www.nytimes.com/2022/02/19/travel/female-indigenous-fly-fishing-guide.htmlNext Steps To learn more about Erica and her work, visit her website at https://www.awkwardangler.com/.Click here to find Erica on these social sites:InstagramYouTubeBe sure to check out Brown Folks Fishing, a community-based organization by and for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) anglers. This is an extra episode of the Hunt To Eat Show. Peter Spencer was a father, partner, brother, son, provider, and hunter. In this episode, Demiesha Dennis of Brown Girl Outdoor World and Lydia Parker of Hunters Of Color tell us about what is known of Peter Spencer's story and talk about the need for anti-racism in the outdoors. Peter Spencer was a Black man who was found dead with nine bullet wounds after joining a group of white men in an outdoors activity in December 2021. While the investigation is ongoing, there is action we can all take right now and carry forward all the time. Demiesha and Lydia talk about the need to always center the humanity of Black people and even more so those who are victims of violence. As a hunting community, we need to take collective action to create a world where hunting and the outdoors are safe for Black folks. We need to actively listen to Black voices and what they tell us about what safety means for them. Please join us in listening to Demiesha and Lydia about what we need to do as a hunting community to ensure that the outdoors are for everyone. We felt it was important to use this platform to amplify this story and the voices we need to hear at this time. This week my guest is Orvis-endorsed guide Erica Nelson [36:12]. Erica gives us tips on how to hire a guide, how to find the right guide, how to manage expectations with a guide, how to tip a guide, and what to do if your guide trip is a disaster. In the Fly Box this week, we have some great questions and comments, including: Can I use the 10-foot, 3-weight Recon rod for both Euro nymphing and small-stream trout fishing? What has Tom learned lately? Has he had any "aha" moments? A listener makes the point that the overharvest of menhaden, a valuable forage fish, threatens our saltwater gamefish populations on the Atlantic Coast, and gives a great book recommendation on the topic. A listener asks if he should consider the shorter 8-weight Blackout rod for a wide variety of fishing situations. Thoughts from a listener on the value of native fish populations A suggestion from a listener on two items every fly fisher who goes off the grid should carry I had a rainbow trout nose my fly and slap the fly with its tail six times. Why did the fish do that?
Sometimes the job or experience that once was scary and exciting might eventually come to be boring and exhausting. And that's okay. Though, it's important to adjust with that growth instead of limiting yourself by staying in what feels comfortable. Erica Nelson, a co-founder of REAL Consulting, an Orvis endorsed fly fishing guide in Colorado, and the host of the Awkward Angler Podcast, has really allowed herself to explore the idea of what limits her in life. Starting at the age of 18 Erica uprooted from New Mexico to Utah alone and hasn't stopped saying yes to adventure ever since. Along the way, Erica had her fair share of corporate jobs and while they all brought their own experiences, some good and some bad, Erica always knew she was meant for more. Each time she felt that urge for more, she said yes to it. In each step of her journey Erica hasn't allowed herself to be limited, no matter the circumstance. With that, it's brought her to a life she's proud to live, owning her own business and helping others. On this episode of Success is Subjective, Erica joins Joanna to share her journey as she dove head first into her many passions as a young adult and how it all has molded her into the person she is today: a business owner and an inspiration. Erica's story will be sure to keep you on your toes and encourage you to take a chance on your dreams, no matter what they may be. What a treat we have with our next guest, Erica Nelson. You'll hear how Erica strives to live a life in full alignment with who she is called to be and what really matters to her. When it comes to the current affairs of the world, Erica practices awareness, intentionality and compassion to keep all aspects of health and wellbeing being front and center for her clients, her community, her family and herself. Before becoming a Duke University Trained Integrative Health Coach and a part of the EHOP health team, she advocated for important policy changes to improve the system of behavioral and hospital care across North Carolina. Our world is facing two pandemics; COVID-19 and racism. With protests popping up all across the nation and the world after George Floyd's death, conversations around race are happening more and more frequently in many spheres including the outdoor industry. These conversations are long overdue and the fishing industry is certainly not exempt from upholding these structures of racial oppression, as barriers to entry for this sport are incredibly high.
