I saw a meme one time that said, “It's funny how sometimes the people you'd take a bullet for are the ones behind the trigger.” Most of the time that's just a metaphor, a way to describe the way it feels when a loved one betrays you. But not always. Sometimes betrayals come written in blood—and more often than not, from somebody you loved and trusted. You couldn't find a clearer example of that than this week's case, a story where two of the most powerful forces in the world—love and greed—clash, and three innocent people end up paying the price.Join Katie and Whitney, plus the hosts of Last Podcast on the Left, Sinisterhood, and Scared to Death, on the very first CRIMEWAVE true crime cruise! Her work challenges conventional norms, inviting creatives to explore what's possible when they release outdated narratives and embrace their true, authentic expression. This week I spoke to writer and podcaster Amelia Hruby. She's also the author of the book Fifty Feminist Mantras. In this conversation we primarily focus on one aspect of her work, the topic of her show: Off the Grid: Leaving Social Media Without Losing All Your Clients. We discuss her experience of leaving social media and the feelings that come with navigating Instagram both personally and professionally. She shares how the boundaries she set up for herself failed her and how the pros of leaving Instagram outweighed the cons. We unpack the nuances of the social capital of instagram, parasocial relationships on it, how our use of it evolved since we first got it, and the emotions tied up in using it socially. We spent so much time on this topic, that she will be back for part two where we will focus on podcasting, from what makes a good conversation to where she sees the future of the industry and more.Show Notes:- Our newsletter to get show notes + more.- Instgram me: @letitouttt or I'm @katiedalebout- A few spots in the Creative Clinic: info here- Amelia's book, Fifty Feminist Mantras- Find Amelia's work & podcasts on the Web- SPONSOR: this episode is sponsored by Paleovalley--click here for 15% off your first order!- SPONSOR: this episode is also sponsored by Nutrafol--get $10 off by clicking here and using code letitout at checkout!- For book recs, our bookshelf here - and I made a shop with recs ...with shelves for guests Thanks so much for listening to this podcast.

In this Roots Radio episode, co-hosts Lisa Bonta Sumii and Richie Nuñez feature musician, singer, songwriter, and creator, Mara Hruby.About Mara Hruby: Mara Hruby doesn't just play music—she lives it. Since the onset of her career, the Oakland, CA native has poured her soul into her velvet confections, drawing inspiration from lessons that she's gleaned in her personal life and funneling them into rich, organic compositions. In just a few years, the singer-songwriter has become one of acoustic soul's fastest-rising up-and-comers, gaining a loyal following. With influences such as Julie London and Patsy Cline to The Moonglows, Curtis Mayfield and Brook Benton, singer/songwriter Mara Hruby personifies the sound and soul of an alternative jazz legend. Her debut EP released in 2010 conceptually titled From Her Eyes featured Ms. Hruby soulfully covering classics originally performed by men. Ranging from the likes of Jamiroquai, Bob Marley, and D'Angelo, she would re-interpret their work while adding her own feminine touch. Marking over 80K+ downloads the project propelled Ms. Hruby into her own lane, scoring thousands of loyal fans and supporters. A captivating performer, Ms. Hruby has notably sold out shows at Yoshi's Oakland and Blue Note Jazz Club in NYC. She has also performed in venues stretching from Philadelphia, DC, to Grammy Weekend (2012 & 2016) in Los Angeles, the 28th Annual Long Beach Jazz Festival (2015), The Clift Hotel's Centennial Celebration (2015) in San Francisco, and the 75th Annual Stern Grove Festival in San Francisco (2012).Ms. Hruby's most recent work, titled Archaic Rapture released in 2014 and received a nod of approval from Billboard. Billboard premiered her first single “Cry Me A River” by way of a live studio performance. Filled with her power, emotion, and depth shine vividly, the video gives the audience a small glimpse into the full EP. Ms. Hruby's Archaic Rapture may be briefly defined by her heartbreak, but it bleeds deeper down into the details. Her Sophomore EP overflows with pure emotion not to convey weakness, but to show strength in being honest with oneself. Within the first week of its release, Archaic Rapture reached the coveted #1 spot on the iTunes Jazz charts. You will come to understand, fairly quickly, that Ms. Hruby exudes pure creative power and sentimental care through her body of work. It's only a matter of time before her art receives international acclaim on a large scale. Feminism is a word we hear alot but often times without a clear definition of what it means and what it looks like. Sometimes it even gets used as a badge of honor that is used as a veil to distract from oppressive behavior, beliefs and actions in direct contradiction to feminist theory. In this episode, Amelia Hruby, PhD feminist author, educator, podcaster, and the founder of Softer Sounds, a feminist podcast studio, joins Nikki to dive into the nuances of how feminist principles and practices show up in today's world, how breaking up with oppressive beliefs and systems is possible (specifically they dive into diet culture, fatphobia and social media) and specific steps to find your own path to liberation.
