We were delighted to have CEO of Untamed Angling Brazil and master fly fisherman, Rodrigo Salles, join us on the podcast. If you don't know, Rodrigo runs one of the premier fishing lodge operations on the planet. The Untamed Angling group operates 9 locations throughout Brazil and Bolivia. This includes the famed Rio Marie lodge which credits over 15 world record fish to its name. Its also home to the renowned 5-Star “floating lodge” that takes you to different destinations along the river throughout your stay and has every amenity you could imagine. I was captivated to hear about Rodrigo growing up in a place that we in the States consider so out of reach and exotic. Over time, he and his partners have grown this platform into one of the most special and unique fishing destinations in the world. It's unheard of really, how they've pioneered this business to break new ground. If you listen to or watch the podcast, you'll hear amazing stories about how they worked with native tribes and both the Brazilian and Bolivian governments to secure the rights to fish and charter these extraordinary waters. You'll find out how they defied odds and quite frankly were laughed at when suggesting catching new species like the Arapaima on fly. They worked in harmony with the tribes so their camps and lodges could provide for these native communities in ways never before seen. It doesn't stop with Arapaima though. These destinations have been well known for catching the world's largest species of Peacock Bass, Golden Dorado and have revolutionized catching Payara on fly among many others. If you're looking for an unforgettable adventure and trying to widen your portfolio and species caught, then look no further than Untamed Angling. You won't find an operation that does it better. It's incredible to think about all the widespread types of fishing there are in the world, and yet we can still be such a tight knit community. That's the power of being Connected By Water. Rodrigo is such an amazing person - Kind, genuine, intelligent and a wealth of knowledge when it comes to world-class angling. I think you'll really love this episode. The Panama Canal expansion allowed bigger ships to move through the canal; however, it also allowed an invasion of saltwater and saltwater fish into a freshwater lake, which threatened freshwater fish species and half of the country's drinking water. I dive into the unintended consequences of the 2016 Panama Canal expansion. Saltwater species from the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans are now invading Lake Gatún, displacing native freshwater fish and jeopardizing the water supply for nearly half of Panama's population. Find out how this ecological shift is affecting local communities and the potential solutions Panama is considering to address this growing crisis.  Link to article: https://www.thecooldown.com/outdoors/panama-canal-expansion-fish-invasion-lake-gatun/?utm_source=flipboard&utm_content=TheCoolDown/magazine/The+Cool+Down Follow a career in conservation: https://www.conservation-careers.com/online-training/ Use the code SUFB to get 33% off courses and the careers program.   Do you want to join my Ocean Community? How can I manage the fly line around my feet when it gets stuck on obstructions in the river? Why don't they make longer fiberglass rods? If I am catching more whitefish than trout, should I move? After high school he went on to work at Southern California's premier tackle shop, The Longfin where he worked full time for a few years and few more summers through college. During college he worked as an Ambassador for Pure Fishing, marketing products for Penn Fishing, Berkley, Shakespeare, and many other brands at local shows and events. After college Seth went to work for Big Rock Sports as a territory sales manager selling a wide range of tackle to tackle shops from San Bernadino county all the way to Fresno. Seth left Big Rock Sports in 2018 to partner with Jared Cope and manage Cope's Tackle and Rod Shop. Seth has been fishing for longer than he can remember. An avid bass fisherman, Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass are his favorite species to target, but his fishing interest don't stop there. Seth has chased Salmon and Halibut in Alaska and Northern Pike, Walleye, and Lake Trout as far north as Northern Manitoba. He regularly charters boats and organizes trips South into Mexican and international waters to target Bluefin and Yellowfin Tuna, Yellowtail, and Dorado and fishes the Channel Islands multiple times a year for White Seabass and more! Striped Bass, Trout, Musky, Tarpon, Snook, Sea Trout, Bonefish, Trevally, Alligator Gar, and Peacock Bass are a few other species that Seth has targeted, and he has intentions of growing that list! Scotty and Danny Talk Fly Fishing Tattoos, Beaver Island, Peacock and Smallmouth Bass, and More! Crooked Creek Holler was started in 2014 as a creative outlet for Danny Reed to try his hand at making wildlife-inspired gear for a different type of market. He felt that a lot of people in the outdoor world didn't have a brand that represented them well, leading to their concept of "goods and gear for the modern outdoorsman." As an angler and outdoorsman, every design Danny creates is based on a personal experience. From floating down the river in pursuit of smallmouth, or traveling the world in search of exotic species, Danny is always looking for inspiration in the great outdoors. Danny views Crooked Creek Holler as his opportunity to share his art and the talents of many other artists and friends. He tries to offer fresh ideas and images that break away from standard branding, with a more hand-drawn feel. While on occasion Crooked Creek Holler utilizes digital mediums, they try and retain that unique vibe you only get from “hand-crafting” art. Danny thanks everyone who supports and wears Crooked Creek Holler. He thinks it's been crazy to watch the organic growth over the years into something he could never have imagined. What started as a passion project, is now a fully operational small business and he is looking forward to what the future holds.
