Protecting Your Business: The Importance of Intellectual Property in the Digital AgeIn the latest episode of our podcast, host Josh sits down with Matthew Fornaro, a seasoned business law attorney and founder of Matthew Fornaro, P.A.. The discussion delves into the critical legal considerations for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), emphasizing the importance of a solid legal foundation for business success. This blog post will break down the key insights shared by Matthew, offering actionable advice and thorough explanations to guide entrepreneurs in navigating the legal landscape of business ownership.Matthew Fornaro is introduced as a business law attorney with a focus on litigation (90%) and transactional work (10%). His practice primarily serves small and medium-sized businesses, helping them navigate various legal challenges throughout their business lifecycle. While most of his clients are based in Florida, he also assists businesses across the country. Matthew emphasizes the necessity of having proper legal documents in place for any business. Entrepreneurs often overlook foundational documents in their eagerness to start their ventures. Essential documents every business should have include bylaws, operating agreements, contracts, rental agreements, and licensing agreements.A key theme in Matthew's advice is the necessity of assembling a team of professionals to support business operations. Entrepreneurs should seek out a business law attorney, an accountant, and other specialists to ensure that all aspects of the business are managed effectively. This collaborative approach helps businesses navigate challenges more efficiently and positions them for success. Matthew encourages business owners to be proactive in their legal planning, including having an employee handbook, insurance, and compliance with regulations. By establishing these foundational elements, businesses can better manage potential issues before they escalate.About Matthew Fornaro:Matthew Fornaro has been a business law attorney serving South Florida, including Coral Springs and Parkland, since 2003. Prior to starting his own law firm, he was an attorney at a 300+ attorney civil practice law firm that served local, national, and international clients, and was also an attorney at a prestigious national law firm. In this episode, Dennis is joined by Kevin Dick, President and Chief Executive Officer Carolina Small Business Development Fund in the Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina area. They discuss the importance of small businesses as part of the ecosystem of a community, region, and state. The Carolina Small Business Development Fund is a not-for-profit organization of over 30 dedicated professionals with three focus areas - small business financial capital, small business technical assistance and growth, and policy research/development. Since 2020, the organization has seen a dramatic increase in loan production and has provided loans, loan modifications, deferred payments, and grants to over 1,200 businesses throughout the State of NC. We have eclipsed the $102M mark in capital deployment dating back to when we began providing loans in 2010 and growing the number from $71M to $102M in three years. We have an outstanding team that is all in on equitable economic development and helping small businesses grow. WE ARE TORCH BEARERS - Providing small business loans, training, and research to support entrepreneurs. Our Story Carolina Small Business Development Fund (CSBDF) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit guided by the belief that when small businesses succeed, everyone benefits. When we first opened our doors in 1990 as the North Carolina Minority Support Center, we were providing technical assistance to financial institutions and entrepreneurs, and in our first 20 years of service to our state, we administered millions of dollars in grants to help address the needs of unserved and underserved people and communities. When the financial crisis of 2008 threatened Main Street firms across our state and nation, our leadership knew that we were in the position to not only double down on our work serving underserved communities, but to expand our services as well. We ushered in a new era for our work in 2011, when we made our first loan to a North Carolina small business, and eventually became a certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) in 2013. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic's economic aftershocks, we doubled down once again and expanded our services to ensure that our state's small businesses could succeed, and the communities they serve would benefit. Since opening in 1990, we have met entrepreneurs at the crossroads of hardship and opportunity—and we will continue to light the way forward for whatever comes next

President Cyril Ramaphosa has no “long game” to deal with corruption. The only game is the African National Congress (ANC) held together by corruption - and run like a syndicate. So says Democratic Alliance's Shadow Minister of Small Business Development, Jan de Villiers. He speaks to BizNews after the president temporarily suspended - instead of sacked - the Deputy Minister of Small Business Development, and former Transport Minister, Dipuo Peters, after a probe into her misconduct by the Joint Committee on Ethics and Members Interests. He says suspending her for just one month “sends a loud and clear message that he is not serious about doing anything about State Capture or people like her who clearly are very much involved in the abuse of State resources”. De Villiers says it was within Ramaphosa's power to turn the country around, “but that would have meant not running the ANC like a syndicate”.
The deputy minister of Small Business Development, Dipuo Peters, has been suspended for a period of one-month without pay. President Cyril Ramaphosa YESTERDAY suspended her following a sanction adopted by Parliament's Joint Committee on Ethics and Members Interests that found Peters had breached the Code of Ethical Conduct in her former portfolio as Minister of Transport. Peters served as transport minister in former president Jacob Zuma's cabinet where numerous maladministration allegations were tabled against her. In this episode, I get to introduce you to someone I met quite a few years back when I was initially exploring entrepreneurship and had the idea of publishing a travel magazine. Mike Hahn was working with small businesses at the University of Northern Iowa, and he helped me see that was not something I should pursue. Mike is unusual as he knew as a teenager that he wanted to work with businesses and communities, and he has made a career in that work in Iowa, North Dakota, and Minnesota. He talks in the podcast about how building durable skills and relationships are key to success, plus as he has seen in his work, don't be afraid to try things and fail. Before you create a business, you have to know the ABC's of business. Today is Access, Boundaries, and Connections. Don't focus on the finish line, focus on the foundation. Access is not all about an outside build. If you build something from a broken place, it will fall. The access point is you - mentally, physically, and spiritually, and you need to control the access to you. Boundaries are the walls you put up. Boundaries are essential in small biz development for the inside out build. Who are you allowing to access your energy? Connections are relationships. I believe it is all about relationships. #fitbiztips #fitinfaith #tamraandress Like, share, subscribe, and comment!

Today, we are joined by Business Advisor and Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Director at the Asian Business Association, San Diego (ABASD), Wesley Quach. Together, we explore the effects of xenophobia and personal biases on the Asian American community. Outside of educating one another about our differences and bringing these issues to better awareness across the nation, communities are often left to wonder what resources are available to help them keep afloat or to continue their growth as small businesses. ABASD and their Small Business Development help these individuals through creating partnerships, providing in-person guidance, and personal consulting. If you, or someone you know, would be interested in learning more about these resources and programs, please visit the Asian Business Association at https://www.abasd.org/.
