Today, Jesse is joined by Hanna Horvath—Certified Financial Planner, managing editor at Bankrate, and author of the Your Brain on Money newsletter—for a deep dive into the psychology behind our financial decisions and why money is never just about numbers. Together, they explore how unconscious “money scripts” formed in childhood shape lifelong habits, why emotional discipline matters more than willpower, and how anxiety shows up even for people who have “won the game” financially. Hanna explains how retirement brings not just financial questions but also an identity shift, making purpose and values as important as portfolio allocation. They discuss strategies for reframing our relationship with volatility, using fire-drill style planning to prepare for downturns, and creating small gaps between emotions and actions to avoid costly mistakes. Throughout, Jesse and Hanna remind listeners that building lasting wealth is less about chasing fads or quick wins and more about cultivating awareness, resilience, and intentionality in both mindset and money. Key Takeaways: • Money is never just about math—it's deeply tied to psychology, emotions, and unconscious beliefs. • Emotional discipline means creating space between feelings and actions, not trying to eliminate emotions altogether. • Retirement isn't just a financial transition—it's a major identity shift that can create anxiety even for those who are financially prepared. • “Fire drills” for your financial plan can prepare you emotionally and practically for downturns before they happen. • Social media and sensational financial headlines amplify fear, making discernment and discipline even more critical. • Retirement satisfaction depends on aligning money decisions with personal values, whether that means family, travel, community, or freedom. Drawing from Hebrews 13:5-6 and 1 Timothy 6:10, Ridgeway discusses the difference between loving money and using it wisely. He emphasizes that while money itself is neutral, the love of it can lead us away from God's intentions. The episode offers practical advice on contentment versus complacency and encourages listeners to focus on gratitude and divine guidance in their financial journeys.Key Takeaways:The Misconception About Money and Piety: Many believe that poverty is a sign of righteousness and that money is inherently evil. Ridgeway clarifies that the Bible does not condemn money itself but warns against loving it more than God. Money, in its essence, is neutral; it's the attitude toward it that matters. It's crucial to understand that wealth can be managed with integrity while maintaining a strong spiritual focus.Understanding Contentment vs. Complacency: Contentment is about being thankful for what you have while striving to improve your situation within God's framework. Complacency, however, means a lack of desire for growth or change. Ridgeway emphasizes that while contentment allows for gratitude and peace, complacency can hinder progress and personal development. Financial planning should aim for growth while being content with current blessings.Biblical Verses on Money: Hebrews 13:5-6 advises to “keep your life free from the love of money” and to be content with what you have. This verse highlights the importance of not letting the pursuit of wealth dominate your life. Ridgeway connects this with 1 Timothy 6:10, which warns that “the love of money is the root of all evil.” Both scriptures point to the need for a balanced view of money that prioritizes spiritual well-being over material gain. The Role of Gratitude in Financial Health: Gratitude is a key component of contentment. Ridgeway reflects on the importance of being thankful for the resources and opportunities provided by God. By focusing on gratitude, individuals can maintain a positive outlook and avoid being driven by insatiable desires for more wealth. This mindset helps in managing finances with a sense of purpose and satisfaction.Quotes:“Money is neither good nor bad; it's our attitude towards it that makes the difference.”“The love of money can lead us away from God's intentions. It's not the money itself, but the love of it that is problematic.”“Contentment is being grateful for what you have, while striving to grow within God's framework. Complacency, on the other hand, hinders progress.”

3 Financial Questions To Answer With Ron Blue

MoneyWise on Oneplace.com

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 6, 2023 24:57

Ron Blue is co-founder of Kingdom Advisors and the author of several books on personal finances from a biblical perspective, including Never Enough?: 3 Keys to Financial Contentment. Ron published a video series a while back for Kingdom Advisors that revealed 3 questions everyone needs to answer. 3 KEY QUESTIONS: 1. WHO OWNS IT?  This question is so foundational because until you answer that question, you don't know the difference between the steward and the owner. And when I say I own it, then I can do whatever I want with money. But if I say God owns it, now my actions change because I know that I'm managing someone else's resources. Answering that question will not only change your behavior; it will change your life. 2. HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH?  Those of us in the United States live in the wealthiest nation in the history of the world. Even those of us who don't consider ourselves “wealthy” by American standards enjoy a higher standard of living than most everyone else in the world. A recent golf tournament awarded the winner $3.6 million dollars. There's nothing inherently wrong with the winner receiving that money. But the question is: How much is enough? Is there an amount that when you reach it, you're done? Or do you keep pushing for more because there's always someone ahead of you? In other words, unless you have a finish line, you'll never truly have contentment. 3. IS THE NEXT STEWARD CHOSEN AND PREPARED?  Again, we live in a wealthy culture. Let's just take the average person, if you will, who owns a home. If they died of old age, then they've had a retirement plan, perhaps, and they own a home and they're debt free. Then somebody's going to need to manage the money and assets left behind after your death. It's a really good idea to know who that is, and make sure that they're prepared. And the reason that's so important is because you're really transferring God's possessions and God's money. So you want to make sure you're transferring it to someone who considers themselves to be a steward and accepts that responsibility.  On today's program, Rob also answers listener questions: Is there a legitimate way to have student debt forgiven or lower the interest rates on your student loans? If you receive a notice that your home's escrow account is insufficient, should you pay a lump sum or just accept a larger mortgage payment? Does investing in an annuity ever make sense? Can you switch a whole life insurance policy to term life at age 74? Is it a good time to buy bonds?  Remember, you can call in to ask your questions most days at (800) 525-7000. Welcome to Money Therapy, the leading financial podcast that gets to the root of money… the emotional side of money. Join host Brandan Chasteen, CFP® and Bill Magill as they explore the pervasive influence of envy and its affect in our relationship with money. In this episode, Brandan sits down with Bill to unravel the complexities of envy and discuss strategies for cultivating a healthy and successful connection with our finances. In today's world, it's all too easy to fall into the trap of feeling hopelessly inadequate. At least that is true for me and I don't think I am alone! We find ourselves overwhelmed by the seemingly superior skills and accomplishments of others. And what often follows this sense of inadequacy is envy—especially when it comes to money. To break the ice, we discuss an op-ed published in The New York Times back in 2014, which opened with a remarkable line: "In my last year on Wall Street, my bonus was $3.6 million—and I was angry because it wasn't big enough." Pause for a moment and consider the envy behind this statement. Does envy exist in your life? Are you willing to admit it does? Maybe it's not money, maybe you know a person that spends half the time you spend on work and they are progressing professionally so much quicker than you? IT IS NOT FAIR!!! Here is a reality check… We don't eliminate envy in our life. We only hope to have enough self awareness and self understanding to recognize envy and deal with it as best we can. So how do we do that? Take a listen to our podcast for a few tips and discussions on ways to deal with envy in our life. Because if you don't deal with it, it prevents you from discovering  a true space of financial peach and happiness. Join us on Money Therapy as we unpack the complexities of personal finance, address the normal human emotions surrounding money, and provide guidance to help you achieve financial well-being. To support this ministry financially, visit: https://www.oneplace.com/donate/1085/29 Heres a visual concept for you, think of your money as a pie. It doesnt matter how big the pie is. If the slice you carve out for lifestyle gets too big all the other slices have to shrink. Its safe to say that most Americans live on more than they need to. Our culture is built on the idea that more is always better. The Bible takes a different view. Today, host Rob West welcomes financial expert Ron Blue to talk about our spending choices. Ron Blue has written many books on personal finance from a biblical perspective, but today were taking a deep dive into one chapter in his book,Never Enough: 3 Keys to Financial Contentment. Then it's your calls at 800-525-7000. The Live wedge is the biggest wedge of our pie. Remembering that God owns it all, we still have to decide how to use it. The Live wedge makes up about half of our income. The other half is divided between Give, Pay Taxes, Pay Debt and Grow (saving or investing). One important principle gives us flexibility in our Live wedge: "Spend less than you earn because everything else depends on this habit." Scripture offers us three very important guardrails concerning our Live wedge, each of which is found in the book of 1 Timothy. The first isprovision."But if anyone does not provide for his own, that is his own household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever"(1 Tim. 5:8). The second iscontentment."But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with these"(1 Tim. 6:8). The third isenjoyment."For everything created by God is good, and nothing should be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving"(1 Tim. 4:4)."Instruct those who are rich in the present age not to be arrogant or to set their hope on the uncertainty of wealth, but on God, who richly provides us with all things to enjoy"(1 Tim. 6:17). Each of these three guardrailsprovision, contentment, and enjoyment is an area where we can and should make ahead-of-Lime decisions. As adults, were free to determine what provision means, but with that freedom comes responsibility. Its inescapable. Determining what provision means for you can be a big dilemma, largely because it raises the deeper and very personal question, "How much is enough?" Provision itself is relative depending on the individual. But when our possessions own us, its impossible to also be devoted to God. Jesus says in Matthew 6,"No one can be a slave of two masters, since either he will hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot be slaves of God and of money." The next guardrail for keeping our lifestyle in check is Contentment, something the Biblealsohas a lot to say about. Hebrews 13:5 says,"Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, 'I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you. Contentment can be learned by becoming more rooted in the reality of God's nearness and provision and by living in the spiritual reality of His promise that,"I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you." Our last guardrail is enjoyment. The Bible certainly doesnt forbid enjoyment, as some might think. We can define enjoyment as grateful intentionality. Paul also gives us direction in this in 1 Timothy 6, Instruct those who are rich in the present age not to be arro-gant or to set their hope on the uncertainty of wealth, but on God, who richly provides us with all things to enjoy. The ability to gratefully enjoy the gifts we haveboth material and nonmaterialis one of the pleasures of being God's children. Here are some questions we answered from our callers on todays program: I am widowed and in my 30s with two small children. I have a retirement account and I do fractional stocks. I have some money in my savings. I recently moved in with my mom. When is the right time for me to purchase a home? We have some home improvement projects to do.
