Episode 6 of Watts & Wheels – TechCentral's electric motoring show – sees hosts William Kelly and Duncan McLeod wade into the most opaque corner of the South African car market: tariffs, subsidies and what they really cost the people buying the cars. William opens with a deep dive into why locally sold vehicles are priced the way they are, unpacking the difference between SKD (semi-knocked-down) and CKD (completely-knocked-down) assembly, the all-important “local content value” that drives a car maker's tariffs and incentives, and why economies of scale make it so hard for a country building thousands of cars a year to compete with rivals building millions. The episode's centrepiece is an interview with Donald MacKay, CEO of XA Global Trade Advisors, who demystifies how South Africa's automotive support regime has worked since the late 1990s – and who actually pays for it. The hosts then turn to the Chinese surge in local showrooms: Chinese brands already accounting for roughly 15% of the market once GWM, MG and others are counted in; and a run through the best-sellers, led by the Chery Tiggo 4. Then it's review time. William drives the all-electric Alfa Romeo Junior Veloce – 207kW, made in Poland, yours for R995 000 – and falls hopelessly in love (it's rather sad to watch, if we're honest). Also in the mix: a jaw-dropping Volvo safety clip in which an EX60 is launched – airborne – into a steel pole; and a Rory Sutherland-inspired riff on why the self-driving car isn't really a car at all but a “room on wheels” – a mobile office, a meeting room, even an income-generating asset – plus what an acceptable robot-driver accident rate should look like next to human drivers. The show closes with Hot or Not. TechCentral

Overdrive: AI cars, revived names and the Kia K4 shooting brake twist AI cars, classic shooting brakes likened to Kia K4 Short Description This episode explores how Chinese manufacturers are reshaping the car industry through AI, digital architecture and global strategy. There's debate over heritage as Jaguar Land Rover revives Freelander, while GWM backs V8 power for markets like Australia. The team also dives into shooting brake design and reviews the Kia K4 hatch, balancing style, practicality and safety. Motorsport gets a nod with a prodigy signed at just 11, highlighting the evolving pathways to Formula One. • Episode Breakdown • Geely AI and digital shift — 00:01:02 • Freelander name revived — 00:07:17 • GWM V8 strategy — 00:15:16 • Young karting prodigy — 00:21:35 • Naming and brand discussion — 00:24:45 • Shooting brake design — 00:27:53 • Kia K4 hatch review — 00:36:08 ________________________________________ • Full Summary • Geely AI and digital shift Chinese manufacturers are pivoting from traditional vehicle metrics to software-led systems. Geely's latest platform prioritises computing power, cybersecurity and lifecycle diagnostics, reflecting a broader move toward intelligent mobility and integration with urban infrastructure. • Freelander name revived Jaguar Land Rover plans to relaunch the Freelander through a China-based joint venture. The move highlights tensions between heritage branding and global production realities, especially as Chinese market dynamics reshape premium SUV strategies. • GWM V8 strategy GWM is developing V8 engines specifically for export markets like Australia and New Zealand. Despite electrification trends, advances in efficiency mean large engines still have a role when matched to real-world driving conditions. • Young karting prodigy An 11-year-old joining McLaren's driver development program shows how early talent is now identified and nurtured. While it offers a direct path to Formula One, it also raises concerns about pressure and early specialisation. • Naming and brand discussion The program explores how manufacturers use naming and branding to shape identity. From BYD naming quirks to Porsche's Christophorus magazine, it's a mix of heritage storytelling and modern marketing. • Shooting brake design The shooting brake blends sports car styling with wagon practicality. While rooted in utility, modern interpretations often struggle with proportions, though they remain an intriguing niche in automotive design. • Kia K4 hatch review The Kia K4 hatch adopts a bold, coupe-like rear design with shooting brake influences. It strengthens Kia's position in the segment but compromises rear visibility and space, while the absence of hybrid options and uneven safety specs are notable drawbacks. ________________________________________ • Program Links and Credits Overdrive is broadcast across Australia on the Community Radio Network. An incredible finish to one of the most memorable CTs in recent memory that was the Bonsoy Gold Coast Pro Presented by GWM, crowned Australia's own GOAT Gilmore and Ethan Ewing in a Queensland sweep. The masses made their way down to Snapper Rocks and stacked it to the brim, celebrating a record-setting 34th CT win by Gilmore and Ewing's second CT win on home soil and third-career CT victory. The GOAT Gilmore reestablished herself as the Queen of Snapper over GWM Aussie Treble winner and new World No. 1 Luana Silva. Then, Ewing's excellence superseded the decimating backhand power of Connor O'Leary to find his first major result of 2026. Despite reporting a quarterly profit decline on 24 April due to higher European sales incentives, Kia says its solid profit base can sustain the strategy, with the upcoming EV2 small SUV set to challenge the BYD Dolphin Surf directly.BYD DENZA Z TAKES AIM AT TESLABYD unveiled the production Denza Z at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show — an all-electric supercar with around 1,000 hp, a sub-two-second 0–60 mph claim, and three variants including a coupe and convertible. Estimated at around $65,000 in China, it targets the Tesla Roadster 2 and is prioritised for European sales, with a Goodwood Festival of Speed debut planned and full technical details due in July 2026.OIL SHOCK COULD SPEED UK EV UPTAKERising oil prices following US and Israeli strikes on Iran and closure of the Strait of Hormuz are shifting the economic case toward EVs, accelerating a consumer tipping point already supported by better batteries. A large EV fleet could transform UK grid stability through vehicle-to-grid systems, with Ofgem estimating that half of projected EVs on V2G by 2030 could provide 16GW of flexible capacity — five times the projected output of Hinkley Point C.PHEVS COST MORE TO BUY AND RUNECIU data shows eight of the UK's 10 best-selling PHEVs carry a higher sticker price than comparable EVs, with an average gap of £4,150 or 10%, even as the average new EV has fallen below the average new petrol car for the first time. Real-world PHEV fuel costs run 490% above official figures, pushing annual fuelling costs to around £1,030 — £620 more per year than an equivalent EV — making total cost of ownership over £1,000 per year higher than going fully electric.OMODA & JAECOO HITS ONE MILLION SALESOmoda & Jaecoo reached one million cumulative global sales in April 2026, just three years after its international debut, recording monthly sales of over 60,000 units in March and operating across 69 markets with 1,364 dealers. Europe drove 41.5% of total global sales, with a 246% year-on-year rise in March, and the brand ranked sixth in the UK with a 4.7% market share — with Omoda & Jaecoo now targeting one million annual sales by 2027.GWM PULLS ORA 03 FROM UKGWM has withdrawn the Ora 03 electric hatchback from the UK market after only 542 units were registered across all of 2025 and just 26 in Q1 2026, ending a four-year run for the model originally launched as the Funky Cat. No new stock will be supplied, with the car available only from existing dealer inventory as GWM shifts focus to a broader European growth strategy.LEAPMOTOR B05 TARGETS EUROPE WITH LOW PRICESLeapmotor's B05 compact hatchback will launch in Europe starting at €26,900 in Italy, undercutting every major rival by at least €10,000, including the Volkswagen ID.3 at €40,990, the BYD Dolphin at €35,000 and the MG4 at €34,000. At 4,430 mm long with rear-wheel drive, 160 kW, a 0–100 km/h time of 6.7 seconds and DC fast charging peaking at 174 kW, it combines size, performance and price in a package that directly targets the mainstream European EV market.US EV MAKERS PRESS DIRECT SALES FIGHTUS EV makers including Tesla, Rivian and Lucid are escalating efforts to bypass the dealer franchise model, which still controls 96% of new-vehicle deliveries, using new legal strategies and ballot initiative threats — though the three brands combined held less than 4% of the US light-vehicle market in 2025. The bigger industry fear is not EV startups but legacy or foreign brands like Volkswagen's Scout Motors breaking the model open for all manufacturers, which could fundamentally reshape US auto retail.MG WEIGHS SPAIN FOR EUROPEAN EV PLANTMG Motor reportedly favours Spain — particularly Galicia — over Hungary for its first European EV manufacturing plant, driven largely by Galicia's strong shipping links to the UK, MG's most important European market. No final decision has been made, but the move is driven by SAIC facing the EU's highest Chinese automaker tariff rate of 35.3%, even as producing cars in Europe will cost more than manufacturing them in China.AVERAGE EV RETAINS 97% OF ITS RANGE AFTER THREE YEARSRecurrent's 2026 EV Market and Trends Report found that the average EV retains 97% of its range after three years and 95% after five years, with five brands — Cadillac, Ford, Hyundai, Mercedes and Rivian — showing zero apparent range loss over five years. Used EV demand surged 53.9% between February and March 2026, with the average used EV now priced at $34,653 — just $1,012 below an equivalent ICE vehicle — while average new EV range for 2026 models rose 11% to 325 miles.

"Some of My Best Friends" was a short-lived sitcom that premiered on CBS in 2001. After Warren (Jason Bateman) is dumped by his boyfriend, he posts and add as a GWM ("Gay White Male") looking for a roommate. Macho Italian guy, Frankie (Danny Nucci) responds assuming that GWM stands for "Guy With Money". The show is loosely based on the 1997 indie film, "Kiss Me, Guido" and provides us with a new twist on the odd-couple dynamic. Despite a strong cast and a premise that tried to blend culture clash with early-2000s LGBTQ-inclusive humor, the show struggled to find an audience. After airing only a handful of episodes, CBS pulled the plug, leaving it as one of those “blink-and-you-missed-it” sitcoms that sitcom nerds still bring up when listing Bateman's pre-Arrested Development projects. Today, a new model from GWM – the Chinese brand now our seventh best seller and the best performing Chinese brand. With nine models on the market its Haval sub-brand has done well – the Haval Jolion and H6 SUVs both excellent its best performing models – its latest model, the Haval H7 Vanta Hybrid however is somewhat of a quandy – frankly one gets the impression that the Chinese brands are more intent on quickly gaining market share than providing product that suits our market – the Haval H7 Vanta Hybrid is one such SUV – A rugged looking medium SUV with the excellent H6 Ultra hybrids underpinnings – a 1.5-litre turbo petrol four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor –. Price: $46,990 drive- away well undercutting excellent medium hybrid SUVs like Toyota RAV4, Hyundai Tucson and Mitsubishi Outlander. The Haval H7 has been given rugged styling elements – bolt on wheel arch flares, black alloy wheels and grille while inside the macho look continues –. Equipment and safety features are high, but the downside, the incessant and intrusive driving attention monitor – so much so its counter productive and a buyer turnoff – the Haval H7 Vanta Hybrid SUV a really nice driver spoilt by a totally unnecessary warning messageSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Driving the GWM Haval H7 Vanta Hybrid SUV – this newcomer takes to nine models from GWM, now our best-selling Chinese brand. Its had enormous success with its Haval Jolion and H6 SUV and rightly so but the H7 Vanta Hybrid SUV seems a misfit – a rugged looking medium SUV, that visually gives the impression of being a tough off-roader – however with the same excellent underpinnings of Haval H6 Ultra hybrid it’s a city slicker – sharply priced at $46,990 drive-away with a 1.5-litre turbo petrol four-cylinder engine mated to a 130kW electric motor – it’s loaded with safety, comfort and convenience features, the drive experience excellent with really good economy. Apart from rather annoying indicators there’s little to criticise but the big downside is the driver attention monitor that at the end of even a short drive nearly sends you crazy – its overdone and is simply a buyer turnoff. Momentarily look at the centrally located touchscreen and you’re meet by warning chimes that are just so annoying. How GWM could release a vehicle with this much intrusion to the driver beggar’s belief - at the end of just a short trip its tiring and counterproductive. It’s a shame and a total buyer turnoff to what is otherwise a nice SUV.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

CAPÍTULO 6: GREAT WALL MOTOR, EL ESPECIALISTA EN SUVs.

We’ve seen a swag of new Chinese models in recent months and the competitive nature of the new vehicle market just gets more intense – and with continual price cuts and incentives one wonders where it will end up but the Chinese brands are intent on gaining significant market share in a short time. I’ve just driven GWM’s first plug-in hybrid – the Haval H6 GT Ultra PHEV SUV with an impressive electric only range of 180kms, combining a 1.5-liltre turbo-petrol engine with front and rear electric motors and a high voltage 35.4kWhour battery. This plug-in hybrid is $9,000 dearer to the pure petrol model, $53,990 drive-away plus a free wall charger for a limited period. Highly equipped and with numerous drive modes. This coupe-styled SUV is well built with more than acceptable quality but as a driver I did not enjoy it as much as the Jaecoo J7 SHS plug-in hybrid of a few weeks back. Part of the problem is that the Chinese want you to think you driving a computer on wheels – everything is activated by a touchscreen and its simply frustrating. Warranty 7-7years/unlimited km with battery warranty at 8-years. The Haval H6 GT Ultra PHEV offers much but for me there are better options.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

FOLLOW UP: ELECTRIC CAR GRANT FALLOUT CONTINUESAs more details are revealed and more people begin to understand all of the ramifications of the UK Government's Electric Car Grant. Firstly, the list of car eligible for the two tiers of payments will be confirmed on 11 August 2025. The scheme went live on 16 July 2025. Click here to read an Autocar article on this. Secondly, car companies can self-register cars for the scheme and as the rules include Fleet registrations, this opens up the ability for abuse. Whilst these cars contributed to the Zero Emission Vehicle mandate, now tax payer's money will be used to support car companies to be compliant. Click this link here to read more on that from Autocar. There are some suggesting that the overall scheme will have little affect, as was discussed on the show last week. Indicata, a motoring related data firm, has calculated that the grant will affect only 5.8% or 14.4% of new car registrations, dependent on which tier is sought. They also have used information from Italy's attempt as a similar scheme that made a small impact. On top of all that they highlight the danger of dramatic depreciation for newly bought vehicles and those outside of the eligibility of the scheme. Click this link to read more from a Motor Trader article. Some manufacturers are forging ahead and offering discounts on their cars at the same rate as the lower tier of the grant. The likes of Alfa Romeo, GWM, Hyundai, Leapmotor, MG and Volvo have already made their move. Click this AutoTrader article for more.Another issued raised was that the scheme ignores the used market. The Independent Motor Dealers Association (IMDA) has called for a £1000 grant for used EVs. Click this Motor Trader article link here to read more. FOLLOW UP: EMPLOYEE CAR OWNERSHIP SCHEMES IN CROSSHAIRSThe UK Government first brought up, what it felt, was the unfair practice of Employee Car Ownership Schemes back in the autumn. This is where a member of staff gets a new car, for a short period of time and then moves onto a new car, whilst paying a much reduced contribution that anyone outside of the scheme would. Proposed legislation will mean anyone taking advantage of such a scheme will be taxed as though that was a company car. To read more, click this Motor Trader article link here. Reports out of China indicate the Chinese Government is about tointervene in the country’s continuing electric car price war – the newscomes as a number of state-owned car makers, particularly GAC and JAC,are struggling under price pressure, particularly from BYD. As I’ve reportedbefore thousands of dollars has been slashed off the price of popularmodels as Chinese car makers try to gain as much market share aspossible. GWM and Geely executives have already warned of the direconsequences of the price war with BYD, claiming Chinese cars are toocheap and unsustainable, and coupled with overproduction, making for anunhealthy market. GWM’s Chairman, Wei Jianjun, has warned of a potentialindustry collapse stating “if it continues like this, the safety of China’s autoindustry will be seriously threatened.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

They talk about the region of Coolangatta as one of the most potent real world experiments as a World Champion breeding ground, with the location being a home to elite surfers like WSL's first World Champion, Peter Townend, Chelsea Hedges, Stephanie Gilmore, Mick Fanning, and world-renowned shapers like Darren Handley and Jason Stevenson. Dave and Rabbit dive even deeper by discussing Bugs' autobiography, Bustin' Down the Door, and the incredible documentary of the same name, and how the surfer's of his generation influenced the progression of our high-octane modern day competitive surfing. Dave and Bugs bring it all together by coming back to Snapper and its integration back into the Championship Tour in 2025, the mindset of battle-hardened surfers relegated to the CS vs the momentum of the up-and-coming regional qualifiers, and calling the World Champions heat between ‘99 World Champ Mark Occhilupo, 2012 World Champ Joel Parkinson, 3x World Champ Mick Fanning, 8x World Champ Stephanie Gilmore, and 11x World Champ Kelly Slater.
