Why do people actually pay taxes — out of fear of fines or because they trust the state? Benjamin Kanthak talks about this with economist Prof. Benno Torgler. The basis is an international study on tax compliance, which shows that it is often less financial incentives that are decisive than psychological factors such as fairness, trust and the feeling that everyone is doing their part. Especially against the backdrop of the current tax debates in Australia, it is also about the question of how stable a tax system really is when public trust dwindles.

Send us Fan MailExploring whether nonprofits should pay taxes on business income, examining how revenue sources, competition, and policy gaps are reshaping the sector's financial landscape.Nonprofit tax exemption business income is becoming one of the most important—and controversial—issues facing the sector today. As nonprofits generate more revenue through business-like activities, the question is no longer theoretical: should some of that income be taxed? In this eye-opening conversation, Scott Hodge of Arnold Ventures joins The Nonprofit Show to examine how nonprofit revenue models have evolved—and where the current tax framework may no longer align with reality. The nonprofit sector now represents $3.6 trillion in total revenue, with approximately $2.8 trillion coming from business-related activities. Yet much of this income remains untaxed. As Scott explains, “We have this enormous… gap in the tax code so that these businesses that are now nonprofits are not paying any tax on their business income.”This raises real operational and strategic questions for nonprofit leaders. When organizations generate revenue through sponsorships, services, or large-scale operations, where is the line between mission-driven funding and commercial activity? The discussion also revisits the intent behind the Unrelated Business Income Tax (UBIT) and why it may no longer capture the realities of today's nonprofit economy. “UBIT has been made so full of holes that it doesn't capture very much income at all,” Scott notes. At the same time, the conversation carefully distinguishes between truly charitable organizations—those driven primarily by donations—and large-scale entities operating with minimal philanthropic income. This distinction matters, especially as nonprofits compete not only with for-profit businesses but also with each other for limited donor dollars. For nonprofit executives, finance leaders, and board members, this episode offers a critical lens on:Revenue strategy and risk exposurePolicy shifts that could impact operationsThe long-term sustainability of tax-exempt statusThis isn't about weakening the sector—it's about understanding how definitions, funding models, and accountability may evolve in the years ahead. 00:00:00 Introduction: Should Nonprofits Pay Taxes? 00:01:20 The Scale of the Nonprofit Economy 00:04:30 What Counts as “Business Income”? 00:06:45 Real Examples: NCAA, AARP, Hospitals 00:09:20 Understanding UBIT and Its Limitations 00:12:00 Nonprofit Survival vs Business Activity 00:14:10 Defining True Charity vs Commercial Operations 00:16:00 Where Large Nonprofits Blur the Lines 00:20:00 Sector Pressure and Public Perception 00:22:30 Why Policy Change Has Stalled 00:24:00 What Could Trigger Reform? 00:26:00 Final Thoughts: Protecting True Charitable Work #TheNonprofitShow #NonprofitTaxation #NonprofitFinanceFind us Live daily on YouTube!Find us Live daily on LinkedIn!Find us Live daily on X: @Nonprofit_ShowOur national co-hosts and amazing guests discuss management, money and missions of nonprofits! 12:30pm ET 11:30am CT 10:30am MT 9:30am PTSend us your ideas for Show Guests or Topics: HelpDesk@AmericanNonprofitAcademy.comVisit us on the web:The Nonprofit Show

Episode 107 Show NotesPay Taxes Now or Later? 7 Strategic Reasons to Consider Roth ConversionsThis episode airs on April 1st — just two weeks before the April 15th tax filing deadline — which makes it the perfect time to talk about proactive tax planning. While everyone has to pay taxes, no one should ever leave a tip.In this episode, we discuss why paying taxes strategically now — through Roth contributions and Roth conversions — may help you and your loved ones pay significantly less over your lifetime. If most of your retirement savings are in traditional IRAs or 401(k)s, this conversation is especially important. Pre-tax accounts can become what some call “ticking tax time bombs” because the taxes are still owed — and future tax rates are unknown. We walk through seven key reasons you may want to consider paying taxes sooner rather than later. In This Episode1️⃣ Avoiding the “Widow's Tax”When one spouse passes away, the surviving spouse often moves from married filing jointly to single filing status — which can mean a significantly smaller standard deduction and potentially higher taxes. Strategic Roth conversions can help reduce that future burden.2️⃣ Preventing Large Tax Bills on Big WithdrawalsMajor purchases, healthcare costs, or bucket-list experiences may require large withdrawals. Taking those funds from pre-tax accounts can push you into higher tax brackets. Having tax-free Roth funds creates flexibility.3️⃣ Reducing Medicare Premium Surprises (IRMAA)Medicare premiums are income-based. Higher taxable income can increase your premiums through IRMAA. Managing future taxable income with Roth strategies can potentially help minimize these increases.4️⃣ Controlling Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs)RMDs are mandatory — whether you need the income or not. Large pre-tax account balances can force sizable taxable withdrawals later in life. Tax diversification gives you more control over your income in retirement.5️⃣ Protecting Heirs from the 10-Year RuleUnder the SECURE Act, most non-spouse beneficiaries must withdraw inherited retirement accounts within 10 years — often during their highest earning years. Roth conversions can serve as a tax-efficient legacy strategy.6️⃣ Using Non-Retirement Funds StrategicallyPaying conversion taxes from taxable or cash accounts may allow more of your retirement assets to grow tax-free over time.7️⃣ Hedging Against Future Tax IncreasesCurrent tax rates are historically low relative to federal debt levels. Roth strategies allow you to lock in today's known rates instead of gambling on tomorrow's unknown ones.Tips, Tricks & Strategies: The Golden Tax WindowWe also introduce the Golden Tax Window — the period between retirement and the start of Required Minimum Distributions.During these years:Earned income may be reduced or eliminatedTaxable income may be lowerRMDs have not yet begunThis window can provide a powerful opportunity to execute Roth conversions at favorable tax rates.Key TakeawayYou don't pay less in taxes by accident. Lower lifetime taxes are the result of proactive, multi-year planning. Most Americans save primarily in pre-tax retirement accounts — but remember, those accounts are co-owned with the IRS. How much you ultimately keep depends on the planning you do today.Roth conversions are not one-size-fits-all. Work with a CFP® professional and qualified tax advisor to determine whether this strategy makes sense for your situation. If you found this episode helpful, please subscribe, share it with someone who could benefit, and leave a review.Remember: A better life is the result of better planning — and better planning includes proactive tax planning.

It will hopefully never happen to you, but what if you're taken hostage and therefore unable to file a tax return? It's probably one of the last things on your mind during a traumatic experience, so the IRS does have a plan in place to make sure a victim doesn't face any unfair consequences from their ordeal. The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration recently took a look at those protocols. To learn what they found, Federal News Network's Eric White spoke to one of the auditors who conducted the review at TIGTA, John Da Cruz.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In this episode of The Authority Company Podcast, Joe Pardavila sits down with global tax strategist Divakar Vijayasarathy to rethink how you view taxes. Divakar shares the personal journey behind his book Don't Just Pay Taxes: How Conscious Entrepreneurs Profit From Taxes, from searching for clarity to building a purpose driven approach to business and policy. He explains why taxes work as a language for behavior, not a penalty, and why alignment with government priorities shapes growth across borders. You will hear how reinvestment sits at the core of capitalism, why entrepreneurs who understand systems gain an edge, and how countries design tax policy to attract talent and capital. Divakar also reflects on living and working across dozens of nations, the tradeoffs between freedom and state control, and how children's questions sparked a first principles view of money, energy, and purpose. This conversation challenges you to stop seeing taxes as a cost and start seeing them as a strategic tool for long term progress.

You've been told corporations pay taxes, but what if that's the biggest lie in the system? In this episode, Mary Jo breaks down who really pays for taxes, benefits, tariffs, and government programs—and why the consumer always ends up holding the bag. In Episode 337 of Farming Without the Bank, Mary Jo dives into Chapter 6 of Nelson Nash's Warehouse of Wealth: "Lies, Lies, and Lies." This episode exposes how taxes, Social Security, employee benefits, tariffs, credit card fees, and corporate expenses are never absorbed by businesses—they are passed directly to you, the consumer. From Social Security myths to corporate "tax hikes," from government spending to free coffee at the sale barn, this episode reframes how money actually flows through the economy and why financial literacy is so rare—and so dangerous to ignore. Key Takeaways: Corporations do not pay taxes; they collect them from consumers Employees pay 100% of Social Security, not "half." All benefits, perks, and expenses are built into prices or wages Government redistribution still starts with taxing the public Business owners have tax flexibility, but consumers do not Financial illiteracy keeps people trapped, believing money myths Chapters: (00:00) – The danger of financial lies (02:00) – Who really pays taxes? The Growing Tax Strike Movement. Thousands Refuse to Pay Taxes. The Scam That Revealed How Broken the AMERICAN TAX System Is! The Minnesota daycare fraud didn't just steal billions — it shattered the social contract. People work, pay taxes, and expect basic enforcement. In this episode, Chris asks the uncomfortable but necessary question, pointing to staggering examples like billions lost to Medicaid and Medicare fraud, runaway Pentagon spending, and a political system that refuses to follow the money. From Washington's culture of grift and lobbyist-driven spending to foreign aid and defense dollars flushed down the drain, this is a blunt look at why trust in government has collapsed. If taxes are meant to serve the public good, where exactly is the accountability—and why are taxpayers still being asked to foot the bill?
It's the season of giving—but does generosity come with a tax bill? Not exactly. In this solo episode, Nic Daniels breaks down one of the most misunderstood topics in personal finance: the gift tax. From helping your kids with a down payment to giving cash to grandkids, he explains exactly how much you can give without involving the IRS. You'll learn how the annual gift limit works, what Form 709 actually does (hint: it's not a tax payment), and how the lifetime gift and estate exemption keeps most people completely in the clear. With current limits set at $19,000 per person and no taxes due for recipients, it's easier than you think to give generously without triggering tax consequences. Jesus tells another parable of judgment: the Parable of the Wedding Feast. Those first invited refuse to come and eventually even attack and murder the king's servants. The king destroys them and opens the feast to "both bad and good" from the streets. But, curiously, a man without a wedding garment is cast out. Why? Then, the Pharisees and Herodians try to trap Jesus with a question about taxes, leading to His brilliant reply: “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." The Rev. Robert Smith, pastor emeritus in Ft. Wayne, IN, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Matthew 22:1-22. The Gospel of Matthew bridges Old and New Testaments, presenting Jesus as the promised Messiah who fulfills the Law we could never keep and establishes His kingdom of grace for all nations. Written by a tax collector transformed by pure grace, Matthew reveals Christ as the true Son of David and Emmanuel (God with us) who challenges us with the crushing demands of the Law in His Sermon on the Mount to the sweet comfort of the Gospel in His death and resurrection. From royal genealogy to glorious resurrection, this verse-by-verse study proclaims the One who conquered sin, death, and the devil for us, now delivering forgiveness, life, and salvation through Word and Sacrament as He remains with His church always, even to the end of the age. Thy Strong Word, hosted by Rev. Dr. Phil Booe, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church of Luverne, MN, reveals the light of our salvation in Christ through study of God's Word, breaking our darkness with His redeeming light. Each weekday, two pastors fix our eyes on Jesus by considering Holy Scripture, verse by verse, in order to be strengthened in the Word and be equipped to faithfully serve in our daily vocations. Jesus' critics thought they could trap Him with a question about loyalty, but He exposed their hypocrisy with one sentence that still echoes today. In Mark 12:13–17, Jesus reminds us that while we have responsibilities in this world, our ultimate allegiance belongs to God alone. This week, Pastor Korey shows how true disciples honor authority without compromising worship—and how the image we bear determines the life we give.

The religious leaders continue to confront Jesus revealing themselves as failed shepherds, more concerned with public opinion and preserving power than genuinely seeking truth. When they send an unlikely alliance of Pharisees and Herodians to trap Jesus with a seemingly impossible dilemma about paying Roman taxes, they expose their desperation. Their flattering approach – "Teacher, we know you are truthful" – thinly veils their attempt to force Jesus into a political no-win situation. What happens next has shaped Christian understanding of political engagement for two millennia. Jesus asks for a coin, revealing both his own lack of wealth and creating a powerful teaching moment. "Whose image is on this?" he asks, before delivering his revolutionary answer: "Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God." With elegant simplicity, Jesus transcends their false dichotomy, leaving his would-be trappers "amazed."This passage challenges prosperity gospel teachings (Jesus had no money) and those who equate holiness with poverty (Jesus had no problem with money itself). Instead, it offers a balanced, profound understanding of how believers navigate dual citizenship in earthly kingdoms while maintaining primary allegiance to God's kingdom.Dive deeper into Mark's gospel with us as we examine how Jesus masterfully teaches eternal truths while deliberately moving toward the cross that will change everything. Episode 58: In this episode, Timalyn explains how much time you have to pay your tax bill and how much time the IRS legally has to collect. Your tax balance is due on the due date of the return. However, when the IRS sends you a CP14, this Notice and Demand for Payment will give you 30 days to pay before the IRS uses any enforcement. This includes things like an IRS Lien or Levy. If you can pay the debt off within 180 days you may qualify for a short-term installment agreement. This agreement can be arranged using your online IRS.gov account to set up an online payment agreement (OPA). If the amount is over $50,000 you will have to call the IRS to set up this arrangement. Don't just assume you have 180 days. A payment arrangement is a privilege, not a right. Communication is key when dealing with the IRS. If the debt is $10,000 or less and you've been compliant the past 3 years you may be eligible for a Guaranteed Installment Agreement. Timalyn offers 1-1 consultations to help set this up at www.Bowenstaxsolutions.com . Timalyn also have an e-book you can purchase to walk you through the process, Guaranteed Payment Plan: How to Guarantee A Payment Plan with the IRS. Timalyn also goes into more detail about IRS Installment Agreements in Episode 10 of the Tax Relief with Timalyn Bowens podcast. Need Tax Help Now? If you need answers to your tax debt questions, book a consultation with Timalyn via her Bowens Tax Solutions website. The IRS legally has 10 years from the time your taxes were assessed to collect on the debt. If you can't afford to pay the debt off within 72 months you may be able to get the payments lower. But this means that you will have to pay on the debt until the last day the IRS can collect. This is known as the collection statute expiration date (CSED). Please consider sharing this episode with your friends and family. There are many people dealing with tax issues, and you may not know about it. This information might be helpful to someone who really needs it. After all, back taxes shouldn't ruin their life either. Years ago, I wrote monthly articles for a Christian business magazine. For one April issue, I did not have peace about submitting an article. When the April issue arrived, I realized that God had protected me. I was shocked that most of the magazine made weak arguments for not paying taxes to the Federal government. ... Last week, President Trump fired 6,700 IRS employees, while the chronically underfunded agency, is in the midst of tax season. In a New York Times guest essay, seven former IRS commissioners, who served in both Democratic and Republican administrations, decried the cuts, which constitute 7% of the agency's work force, as bad policy that would make the agency less efficient and effective. We talk to tax experts and former IRS commissioner Daniel Werfel, who oversaw efforts to overhaul the agency during the Biden administration, about the impact of these cuts to the agency and to the federal budget and Trump's policy towards the IRS.
