Dr. Mark Broomfield is a dance scholar and artist, and the author of Black Queer Dance: Gay Men and the Politics of Passing for Almost Straight. Born in London, he has spent much of his career in New York, currently as Associate Professor of English and the Founder and Director of Performance as Social Change at SUNY Geneseo. He says his work is about “moving minds, moving bodies and moving souls” to advance transformational social change. We'll ask about bodies, identity and change. Comme dans la chanson de Busta Rythmes, ce podcast a deuxième partie. Dans l'épisode précédent, je vous explique comment un titre de rap aux Etats-Unis a relancé la consommation du cognac dans le pays. Le rap aux Etats-Unis, c'est une culture, un son et une manne financière non négligeable pour l'industrie du cognac en difficulté à la fin des années 90. En fait, le cognac est bu déjà depuis quelques décennies aux Etats-Unis par les jazzmen notamment. Il est consommé majoritairement par les Afro-Américains. Pendant longtemps, le cognac était la boisson de cette communauté en opposition avec le whisky, un alcool bu par les Blancs. Au-delà d'être synonyme de luxe à la française, le cognac est surtout associé à la réussite. Et dans le rap, quand on arrive à sortir de son quartier difficile et de ses années de galère, on le montre avec opulence et arrogance. On organise des fêtes à la Louis XIV sauf que les carrosses sont remplacés par des grosses bagnoles / on aime la bagnole / on balance des billets verts, on s'entoure des plus belles femmes et on boit du « yak » parce qu'on a désormais de quoi se les payer. Le rappeur Tupac parle déjà de sa passion pour la « brown bottle » dans les années 90. Au départ, les industriels ne flairent pas forcément le coup marketing d'associer leur marque aux rappeurs US qui se présentent souvent comme des gangsters repentis, pas top pour l'image mais quand ils voient les ventes boostées par Busta Rythmes, la filière cognaçaise se dit qu'il y a un truc à faire. Ce qu'il faut savoir c'est qu'on boit du cognac partout dans le monde sauf en France. Plus de 97% du cognac est consommé à l'étranger. Et les plus gros consommateurs sont toujours les Américains, plus de la moitié du marché international. La commune de Cognac a vu les plus grandes stars du hip-hop débarquer. Jay-Z est propriétaire avec Bacardy de la maison d'Ussé depuis les années 2010. Son cognac concurrence même les plus grandes maisons. 50 cent a lui aussi investi dans le spiritueux. L'ambassadeur du cognac Rémy Martin n'est autre que Usher. Et Pharrell Williams a composé une musique pour le cognac Louis XIII qu'on ne pourra écouter que dans un siècle. Je vous le dis dans l'épisode précédent, Drake dans « One Dance », boit du Hennessy. C'est le H du groupe LVMH, Nas est en collaboration avec la maison depuis une décennie, il a même une bouteille à lui, créée à l'occasion des 50 ans du hip-hop en 2023.
