In this excerpt, from one of our monthly VIP Live Zoom calls with the 10,000 NOs Insiders Community, Talent Agent Marion Campbell or Buchwald LA cuts straight to what young actors need to hear: what does it take to not just attract the right agent, but to help them help you? Who you are "has to be reflected on your headshot, and that has to be reflected in your demo tape... whatever it is that you're selling. So I get frustrated when an actor doesn't know what they are... I'm not going to be able to help them." In this excerpt from one of our weekly Live Zoom calls with the 10,000 NOs Insiders Community, our monthly VIP, Xavier Dean, shares some very specific branding and marketing knowledge that he used to go from homeless to owning a 7-figure real estate company, a branding company, and boasting an Instagram platform with 1.3M followers. He has taken what he learned in business and applied it to his newfound acting career which has far exceeded my expectations from when I met him. But underneath all of the mechanics is a simple philosophy he believes, exemplified through this quote, "Well, before we just help you create a brand, you need to tell us, how does the world perceive you? Because we can work around the brand on how you think the world perceives you but you need to go out there and ask random people, 'When you think about me, what're the first few things you think of?' Because that is ultimately your story, and that's how you start working your brand."Monday Morsels are the short-form companion to our Friday Interviews of 10,000 NOs... brief riffs on the show's central topics & themes as food for thought to chew on throughout your week.It is not the critic who counts. Rather than describe it, I'll leave you this quote from Marion which sums up the kind of gold this episode is full of, "so many clients have said to me over and over again, I make all these self tapes and then I don't hear anything back and they go into the either. And, yeah, I think that a lot of that is happening. If we allow ourselves to skip training sessions, or anything in our life that we've prioritized, it can be a slippery slope. Sometimes just the act of not being completely absent is enough to get you in motion to the point where, eventually, inspiration kicks in. And if it doesn't, at least that day wasn't a total deficit. It may not have been glorious, but you can still chalk it up as a day that you won the battle of perseverance, and build on it the next day. The past is gone; the future is our imagination; the only thing we have is right now. Many of us enjoy activities like surfing or riding rollercoasters, not realizing that the real thrill is that they force us to be present. So it's in those moments that we are most fully alive. For many actors, on some subconscious level, that might be the reason we've chosen this career - as painful as it can sometimes be, it inherently forces us to be present. In this excerpt, from one of our monthly VIP Live Zoom calls with the 10,000 NOs Insiders Community, with Best-selling Author/Speaker/Mountaineer Alison Levine, Alison shares with us that climbing Mount Everest includes a lot of climbing down Mount Everest. In order for climbers to get used to the altitude to which they'll be ascending, they take several trips to camps at various heights on the mountain. But between each night at the higher camps, they have to go back down to basecamp (which took 10 days to hike to in the first place). The parallels between climbing Everest and so many feats that we mere mortals are attempting to "climb" are endless. Alison explains that progress does not always happen in one direction. Those periods where you think you're back-tracking are actually just times when you're replenishing and recovering and getting ready to reach higher heights.Monday Morsels are the short-form companion to our Friday Interviews of 10,000 NOs... brief riffs on the show's central topics & themes as food for thought to chew on throughout your week.It is not the critic who counts. In this excerpt, from one of our weekly Live Zoom calls with the 10,000 NOs Insiders Community, we discuss the fact that, despite the popular opinion that obsessing is a terrible thing, it can also be used for good. As long as the obsession is not tied to results that are out of our control, it can be a way to constantly hone our craft and continue to progress. The trick is to use it to bring more joy rather than allowing it to trap us within a mindset where everything we value as "good" is "out there somewhere".Monday Morsels are the short-form companion to our Friday Interviews of 10,000 NOs... brief riffs on the show's central topics & themes as food for thought to chew on throughout your week.It is not the critic who counts. If we focus too much on what's coming down the pipeline we may very well miss out on the gold of the present moment. Actors, at this time of year, know this better than anyone: the sting of a pilot season that yields no fruit can cause one to think they're back to square one. In this excerpt, from one of our weekly Live Zoom calls with the 10,000 NOs Insiders Community, we discuss the fact that, despite things not happening on your timeline, it is not helpful or smart to define ourselves by our worst dysfunction as many people do. That will only encourage people to place us into the smallest box in which they can put us while also convincing us that, "if it hasn't happened for us yet, it's never going to happen." This attitude is not only self-defeating, but can also prevent us from seeing that many times the slowness that we're experiencing is because we're being forced to learn something else that's actually going to serve us more than we ever could have planned.Monday Morsels are the short-form companion to our Friday Interviews of 10,000 NOs... brief riffs on the show's central topics & themes as food for thought to chew on throughout your week.It is not the critic who counts. Among many takeaways for our members, she told a story from early in her career, when she was first learning about sales. She was admittedly terrible (don't worry, she went on to become a superstar) but she didn't realize until her supervisor asked one simple question. After hearing Jen explain everything she was doing to make the sale (it was a lot), he simply questioned, "Are you asking for the order?" As seemingly obvious as that sounds, she realized that she was not. So with that one suggestion, she began asking potential customers directly for their business and the results changed the trajectory of her professional life and drastically increased the quality of her personal life.Monday Morsels are the short-form companion to our Friday Interviews of 10,000 NOs... brief riffs on the show's central topics & themes as food for thought to chew on throughout your week.It is not the critic who counts. Expecting this former New York City firefighter turned Ironman turned Near-Death Crash Victim turned Speaker/Author to come in beating his chest, all the members were shocked by his central topic: Vulnerability. In this excerpt, from one of our LET'S SHOOT THE REHEARSAL weekend-intensive on-camera retreats in NYC, Industry VIP Yul Vazquez drops in to discuss the power we have as actors. He talks about treating auditions as being your time just as much as anyone else's, approaching the role in your own way (in case you get the gig and have to do it for 10 years), begging for forgiveness rather than asking permission (when trying something new) and not allowing your creative wings to be clipped by negative feedback or rejection. Yul has been all over your TV screens, movie screens and theaters for decades. As a founding member of the LABrynth Theater Company in NYC alongside Philip Seymour Hoffman and John Ortiz, Yul went on to work all over the place, most recently as a series regular on Apple TV's Severance and HBO Max's Whitehouse Plumbers. 10,000 NOs podcast is now in it's 2.0 phase: after a long pause from late 2021 to late 2023, it has returned in a more raw format: shorter episodes, like the old Monday Morsels (they may be short, solo riffs by Matt on central themes of the pod, excerpts from Matt's 10,000 NOs Insiders Community Zooms, or excerpts from Insiders VIP sessions with VIPs from the entertainment interview and beyond) are the short-form our old long-form Friday Interviews of 10,000 NOs may pop up every now and then as bonus episodes. The intent of this podcast is to remind people that they are not alone in their struggles, and to help educate & inspire them with stories and conversations with others who have traveled the path before them. It is not the critic who counts. If you've been knocked down... get up, dust yourself off, and get back in the arena. If you want to give back, share this with someone who could use it and leave a 5-star review on Apple Podcasts, or wherever you listen, so more people find this show and benefit from these conversations. If you dig the show, CLICK HERE to learn how you can make this experience 3D by joining our 10,000 NOs Insiders Community: access to a members-only Facebook group, intimate, weekly Live video calls with Matt, including monthly drop-ins with some of his badass past-guests & VIP friends and more. SHOW LINKS:10,000 NOs: THE BOOKSUBSCRIBE TO OUR (WEEKLY) NEWSLETTERFOLLOW MATT ON SOCIALFIND OUT HOW YOU CAN BE A 10,000 NOs INSIDER
