In this episode, I'm unpacking the weight of hustle culture—especially how it shows up for first-gen Latinas like me. That constant pressure to be productive, to prove we belong, to carry our families and represent our communities—it's heavy. And let's be honest, it can burn us out. I talk about what it feels like to be emotionally tied to expectations we never signed up for, and how I'm learning to redefine success in a way that actually feels good. Not performative, not just for show—but real, aligned, and rooted in self-care. Because a life that just looks successful isn't enough. Welcome to the show! CHRISTIAN LIFE COACH COLLECTIVE- Change Your Life, Start a Coaching Business, Walk in Your Calling
BOUNDARIES BUILT ON FEAR FAIL- In this episode of the Christian Life Coach Collective, we tackle the common belief that setting up strict boundaries before you even begin coaching will protect you from burnout, harm, or difficult clients. While boundaries are essential, many new coaches set limits based on fear—not experience or calling. You'll learn how to discern between protective wisdom and projected fear, and how to build boundaries that serve your purpose, not shrink it. 3 Key Takeaways: Fear-based boundaries can keep you from stepping into what God is calling you to do. Real boundaries are built through experience, not assumptions. Healthy boundaries should grow from your values and purpose—not from projected “what ifs.” Listener Challenge: Take inventory this week: Where have you set boundaries based on fear or imagined scenarios? Ask God to show you what needs to stay, what needs to shift, and what walls can come down so that you can lead and serve in freedom. In this episode we're diving into a conversation that so many of us—especially mothers—need to hear. Setting boundaries is one of the hardest things to do, yet it's essential for our health, well-being, and the way we show up for our families. Why do we struggle with it so much? Why do so we feel depleted, constantly giving without refilling their own cups? To help us unpack this, I'm joined by Dr. Kirsten Lauritzen, a highly respected functional medicine practitioner who specialises in women's health, burnout, and performance. She's here to shed light on why boundaries are so difficult to maintain, the physiological and emotional toll of over-giving, and how we can start reclaiming our energy and well-being. In this riveting episode of my chat with Dr. Adam Fraser, we delve into the intricacies of performance, resilience, and the human condition. Adam is a researcher and fellow corporate speaker (and one of the best) and a bloody good, down-to-earth bloke. Through humour and profound insights, we cover a multitude of topics, including the coping mechanisms for stress, the intersection of physiology and psychology, and the challenges faced by modern-day educators. What You'll Learn: The Power of Reflection and Reset Dr. Fraser introduces the concept of the "third space," a transitional gap that is crucial for shifting mindsets between different aspects of life. This framework—reflect, rest, reset—helps individuals leave behind previous stressors and prepare mentally for what's next. Understanding Mental Challenges Explore the metaphor of "Kevin," a character that encapsulates negative inner dialogue. This concept, derived from ACT therapy principles, helps in recognising and rationalising self-doubts and unhelpful thought patterns. The Importance of Consistency Discover the consistent habits of elite performers, such as those in special forces and top athletes, and how these disciplines can be translated into everyday life for sustained success. Navigating Work and Home Life The conversation touches upon the impact of increased remote work on personal boundaries, emphasising practical strategies to create clear separations between professional and personal spaces. Key Takeaways: Reflection, Rest, Reset: Implementing a structured approach to transitioning between activities can enhance emotional well-being and productivity. Managing Inner Dialogue: Understanding and accepting negative thoughts without allowing them to dictate actions can lead to more constructive behaviours. Consistency Is Key: Continuous small efforts in the right direction are more impactful than sporadic grand gestures. Creating Boundaries in Remote Work: Being intentional about starting and stopping work can help maintain a work-life balance, crucial in current times. Resources: Book on "Kevin": Dr. Fraser is working on a book detailing the "Kevin" concept, which promises to offer practical insights into managing inner dialogue. Secondary Trauma in Educators: New research by Dr. Fraser highlights the growing phenomenon of secondary trauma experienced by educators, offering solutions to mitigate its effects. Dr. Adam Fraser's resources and books are an enriching source of knowledge for anyone looking to enhance their personal and professional life. Leaving people behind can be painful, but it's often necessary when you've chosen growth, healing, and self-trust. There will be moments when you realize that not everyone will walk the path you're on, and that's okay. Even though it can feel like it, letting go doesn't mean you're too much; it simply means you're stepping into deeper spaces that some people haven't reached yet. Also, the depth of connection is not just about what you bring. For a long time, I thought what I brought would be enough because I could make up for what the other person lacked, but it's also about how deeply the other person has explored their own heart and soul. Ending relationships while you're on a journey of finding yourself is one of the hardest things you'll ever do. It's gut-wrenching, messy, and often feels like the universe is testing you. But it's also a powerful lesson in choosing yourself, even when it feels impossible. In this episode, I'll explore how to navigate the grief of leaving people behind, adjust to relationships, or saying goodbye with grace, all while honoring your own healing. Download the worksheet to dig deeper into this process at http://andreaowen.com/668 What you'll hear about in this episode: Understanding the Pull to Let Go of Certain Relationships: Healing and aligning with your values leads to craving depth in relationships, revealing gaps; surrendering to the truth, not the fantasy; avoiding self-abandonment, and trusting yourself to let go when hope keeps you stuck. The Grief of Actually Letting Go: The grief of holding out hope that someone will change can feel easier than the grief of accepting them as they are. Creating Boundaries, Making Adjustments, and Saying Goodbye: How to adjust relationships, set boundaries, and say goodbye with love and clarity, while honoring your healing and not self-abandoning for someone else's comfort. Roger Martin, one of the world's most influential business thinkers and former Dean of the Rotman School of Management, joined us on this episode to talk about all things strategy. He breaks down how organizations can keep up with the dynamism and complexity of it all: the evolution of strategy across the decades, digital transformation, decentralization's impact, and the latest frontier, the rapid adoption of AI and LLMs. He challenges traditional approaches to strategy and impact measurement metrics like OKRs, stating, “Strategy is what you do, not what you say." In this candid conversation, he also dispels the angst surrounding AI taking over strategy roles in organizations, highlighting why AI and LLMs are valuable for rapidly synthesizing information but lack the capacity for generating unique, strategic insights that require human judgment and creativity. Join us for this conversation filled with insights. Known for his practical approach, Roger Martin—who's authored many bestselling books, including “Playing to Win”—has guided thousands worldwide to make clear, actionable choices that drive competitive advantage. In the conversation, we also touch upon themes of risk-taking and the importance of empowering leaders to think strategically at every level of the organization. He argues that teams should be able to challenge ideas and push boundaries, all of which are vital for sparking real innovation. Key Highlights
In this episode, the hosts Brett Connolly and Sarah Gonzales discuss the importance of saying no and setting boundaries in order to avoid burnout. They share their own experiences and offer advice on finding work-life balance. They emphasize the need to prioritize family, take time for oneself, and rely on God's strength rather than trying to do everything on their own.
Life can feel like a balancing act between staying true to ourselves and adapting to what others expect from us. When we live by others' rules—what we "should" do or how we "should" act—we often lose our sense of self. Without firm boundaries, we allow others to shape our lives, fearing we'll lose love or belonging if we stand up for ourselves. But setting boundaries is essential for self-respect and personal peace.Remember, being kind to yourself and honoring your needs isn't selfish; it's foundational to living a life that genuinely reflects who you are. This episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosted by Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton, explores the importance of setting immediate boundaries (Amazon Affiliate Link), especially for first responders and military personnel who deal with high-stress environments. We discuss why setting boundaries early on is crucial for maintaining mental and emotional health and offer five practical ways to establish boundaries before they become a bigger problem. Why Setting Immediate Boundaries is Important: In high-demand careers like law enforcement and the military, it's easy to get overwhelmed when boundaries aren't set right away. We'll talk about how setting boundaries early protects your energy, mental health, and professional relationships. Five Ways to Set Boundaries Right Away: Be Direct and Honest from the Start: When someone asks you to do something and you're not in the right headspace, like being asked for an interview when you're not feeling friendly, being upfront is key. Saying, ""I'm not in the right mood for this right now,"" is a respectful way to set a boundary. Use "I" Statements: When setting a boundary, make it clear that it's about your needs, not the other person's behavior. For example, ""I need some time to decompress before I respond to this request,"" allows you to set a boundary without sounding accusatory. Recognize Your Limits Early: Understand what drains your energy and set boundaries around those areas before they start to take a toll. This might mean turning down extra shifts or saying no to social invitations when you need rest. Learn to Say No without Guilt: It's okay to say no, and you don't owe anyone an explanation. Saying no right away helps avoid resentment or burnout later. We'll discuss how to do this without feeling guilty. Communicate Your Boundaries Clearly: Whether it's with coworkers, friends, or family, make sure your boundaries are clearly communicated. For example, "I'm not available to talk during my downtime" or "I need 30 minutes of quiet time after a shift." Examples from Real-Life Scenarios: We'll share personal stories, like the time Ashlie set a boundary by telling someone she wasn't in a friendly mood for an interview, and how it was respected because of her clear communication. She also highlights the significance of discussing financial values before having children and making decisions that align with shared goals. Timestamps: 00:00 - Introduction and Overview02:21 - The Significance of Financial Compatibility06:39 - Understanding Financial Values09:56 - Navigating Differences in Values12:41 - Creating Boundaries for Financial Success18:57 - Avoiding Blame and Focusing on Shared Goals23:07 - Discussing Financial Values Before Having Children28:20 - Conclusion Takeaways: Financial compatibility is just as important as other aspects of compatibility in a romantic partnership. Shared values, rather than circumstances, are key to financial compatibility. Assume that your partner will not change their financial values and decide what is a deal breaker for you. Create financial boundaries that protect the relationship and allow each partner to express their values. Blaming each other for differences in financial values is counterproductive; instead, focus on leveraging each other's strengths. Discuss financial values and goals before having children to avoid conflicts in the future.

Is saying yes to too many opportunities getting in the way of being the leader you need to be? In a world full of opportunities and endless demands, knowing when to say “no” can be a transformative skill for a leader. But finding the balance between seizing opportunities and protecting our limits is a delicate dance many of us struggle with. With over 25 years in leadership, podcast guest, LeeAnn Garrick, has been on a journey of learning to set boundaries throughout her career. LeeAnn is the Chief Operating Officer of the Cook Inlet Tribal Council where she manages operational units and large-scale programs. As a recovering “yes” person, she's learned to say no among a slew of work commitments and personal responsibilities to safeguard her well-being. In this episode, LeeAnn recounts a time when she turned down a prestigious fellowship to which she initially said yes. She describes going back to her boss to turn down the opportunity and shares what she learned from that experience. LeeAnn explores where her “yes” attitude comes from and how it's shifted throughout her career. We also unpack how difficult it can be to say no and how the first step is self-awareness. Even though she still trips up from time to time, she's learned that every opportunity is not worth her energy. Finally, she ends by offering advice on how you can decide what opportunities are right for you in your career.

Creating Boundaries and Building Confidence: A Personal JourneyI used to say "Yes" to everything. "Yes, I'll do this. Yes, I'll do that." I ended up exhausted, with no boundaries, constantly pushing myself to the brink. I told myself it was because I wanted to be nice and help people, but that was just a lie. The real reason was that I wanted people to like me.Creating boundaries is crucial for feeling in control of our lives. It enhances that psychological safe haven we all crave. It's about more than just setting limits; it's about gaining confidence and realizing that you are in charge of your life. While some people's opinions may matter a little, most don't.One of the biggest boosts to my confidence, beyond stopping the endless self-comparisons, was understanding the power of boundaries and surrounding myself with positive people. Look at the people around you. Are they lifting you up or dragging you down? Surround yourself with those who positively impact your life. Judgmental or critical people can seriously damage your mental strength and self-esteem.If you constantly feel awful about yourself, and you're surrounded by negativity, it will reinforce that negative narrative in your mind. Many people don't realize that their closest friends, partners, kids, or even parents can be incredibly negative and harm their self-esteem. Learn to accept these compliments. Recognize the people who genuinely support and uplift you and keep them close.Walking in confidence isn't a quick fix; it's a daily practice. Everyone has to work on this, myself included. Mika, Tia, all of us need to consistently practice building confidence and maintaining boundaries. Don't let your life be defined by negativity, lack of boundaries, or constant comparison. Instead, become familiar with holding your head high, appreciating your unique gifts, and embracing positivity.⭐Get OBSESSED with changing your life. Everyone parents differently. There is no easy or perfect template to parenting that creates the best case scenario with our kids. One thing that is true, though, about parenting is that we are responsible for them. Their growth, their character, their values, etc. Increasingly, it is becoming harder to fight against the influences of our culture to have a strong voice in the lives of our kids. We fight social media, other kid's influences, and the norms of the world and often times that clashes with what you value as a parent. In this episode, Heather and Griffin talk about these challenges and some of the decision they are making to gain more influence in the lives of their five kids. They aren't telling you to do it their way but having a conversation on not only what they are doing but why they are doing it. Hopefully it sparks great thoughts for you as a parent or a future parent.

This is Part 4 in a 4 Part Series on Navigating Needs In RelationshipsIn this episode, Robert and Sharla Snow discuss the art of saying no and creating boundaries without pain. They emphasize the importance of saying no to requests from our partners compassionately, to maintain connection and avoid resentment. They explore the concept of resentful accommodation, where we meet the needs of others at the expense of our own needs and desires. The hosts provide examples of how resentful accommodation can manifest in relationships and the negative impact it can have. They also offer a three-step framework for compassionately saying no and finding a win-win solution.Takeaways:Saying no to our partner's requests is important for maintaining connection and avoiding resentment.Resentful accommodation, where we meet the needs of others at the expense of our own needs, is a losing strategy. It is essential to know and express our own needs and desires in order to have a balanced and intimate relationship.A three-step framework for saying no compassionately includes receiving the request as a gift, stating the need behind the no, and searching for a win-win solution.Chapters00:00 Introduction00:59 Importance of Saying No04:14 Resentful Accommodation05:24 Examples of Resentful Accommodation06:22 Losing Strategy07:20 Question: What if I can't always meet my partner's needs?10:06 Resentful Accommodation and Insecurity12:28 Resentful Accommodation in Family Situations13:51 Feeling Resentful at Family Gatherings15:44 Complex Emotion of Resentment19:34 Knowing Our Needs and Desires20:58 Framework for Saying No21:50 Step 1: Receive the Request as a Gift23:44 Step 2: State the Need Behind the No25:38 Step 3: Search for a Win-Win27:27 Balancing Needs and Staying Connected29:22 Conclusion and Call to Action
We're covering a topic that falls into the category of “we've covered it before but it's worth repeating”. Because I know most, if not all, women struggle with setting and communicating boundaries as it flies in the face of our people-pleasing, helpful and perfectionist tendencies. So we're going to talk about Boundaries, again, but we're going to focus more on the actual words and what to say. Amy Green Smith joins us again for her last episode in our 4-part series (if you haven't listened to our last three episodes, I'd highly encourage you to do that!) Communicating boundaries in a productive and responsible way is going to require practice. Probably lots and lots of practice, given however many years we've spent not communicating them. Don't wait for your mic drop moment – don't expect perfection – don't spend endless amounts of time worrying about what the other person thinks about your boundary – just start practicing. Because that's how you get good at anything. Connect with Amy: Grab Amy's FREE-SOURCES at: https://amygreensmith.com/free Only 2 spots available in Amy's Signature Worthy Program! PAUSE… The world can be a wonderful place, Full of joy and kindness and beauty. A place where those who care about growth, Can truly make themselves free. PAUSE… But in order to reach such a pinnacle, There are parts of the world to avoid. Others' toxic demands and beliefs Can create so much internal noise. PAUSE… To thrive, you need boundaries, Clear lines the outer world cannot cross. You need to shelter the peace in you, Keeping control of feelings and thoughts. PAUSE… It's not that other people are bad for you, Or even that you should escape them. But when it comes to what enters your sacred space, It's crucial to protect the realm. PAUSE… Your serenity is like a magic kingdom, A home for your soul's greatest treasure. It must be defended at all costs, To evade losses too grave to measure. PAUSE… Your spirit is such a precious part of you. It guides your inner journey. If outer messages obscure its voice, The wisdom grows distant and blurry. PAUSE… But if you craft yourself a suit of armor, A mental threshold to block out excess, You're protecting yourself, mind, body, and soul, And preventing so much future distress. PAUSE… You've worked hard to learn all you know, You've labored to develop new awareness. You have a right to keep that understanding intact, To shield it from hostility and menace. Breathe as deep as you can, feel the power of your wellbeing. Release that breath and hold its power close, focus on your healing. LONG PAUSE… When it comes to looking after your peace, You're the only one standing at the gate. It's up to you to draw the lines, Then keep those boundaries certain and straight. PAUSE… Once you put that armor on, The message to yourself is clear. Harmony and wisdom are your priorities, Nothing that weakens them must come near. PAUSE… Your time with self is precious, Your progress requires your support. Commit to safeguarding your deepest truths, Hiding them away from external assault. PAUSE… While the world does not intend you harm, Its influence can be overwhelming. When you have your armor in place, You can filter out what's not helping. PAUSE… Care for your soul as you would a child, Watch over its gentle spirit. Do what you must to keep it strong, To keep your inner voice where you can hear it. Namaste, Beautiful
