Alcohol and the Mediterranean Diethttps://www.yourdoctorsorders.com/2018/09/is-there-no-safe-level-of-alcohol/ (Alcohol) consumption is controversial.  No one disputes that excess alcohol consumption leads to dire consequences. But what about moderate alcohol consumption? Can we define moderate alcohol consumption? Is there a safe and therapeutic level of alcohol consumption? Alcohol is a component of the Mediterranean Diet. However, the consumption is limited to 10 ounces of red wine for men, which translates to 14 grams of alcohol. Half that amount for women. In a number of https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25207479/ (articles), this amount of alcohol is beneficial. Bias from AuthorsConfirmation bias is ingrained in all humans.  Treatment programs for alcohol addiction teach that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.  Fundamentalist Christians, Muslims, and other organized religions have taboos regarding alcohol consumption. Finally, consumers of alcohol will be biased against abstinence. Components of WineIn their article, https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8468969/ (Wine, Polypenols and Mediterranean Diet), the authors note that one can get polyphenols from other sources in the diet, and thus the alcohol may be unnecessary.  They conclude that moderate consumption is likely an important component of a mechanistic as well as social norm. Dose Dependent Effects of Polyphenols on the BodyDecreased risk of cardiovascular disease Dose-dependent reduction of LDL-C Increase HDL-C and decrease triglycerides in patients with diabetes Reduction of Blood Pressure Increase production of nitric oxide (NO), which increases blood flow and reduces blood pressure Improve LDL/HDL ratio Resveratrol inhibition of pro-inflammatory agents lower risk of type 2 diabetes Resveratrol improves glucose homeostasis Modulate gut microbiota Improvement in blood vessel wall function (endothelial function) Reduction of drugs in diabetic patients Mechanistic vs HolisticThe issue with the Mediterranean Diet is always those who approach from a mechanistic view versus those who approach nutrition and lifestyle from a holistic view. The original data from the Mediterranean Diet came from thehttps://www.yourdoctorsorders.com/2022/08/the-modern-mediterranean-diet/ ( Seven Countries Study). This was a holistic examination, not only of their diet but also their lifestyle. Alcohol Toxicity is in the DoseA bit of wine is good, a lot of wine is not. If you look at every improvement in human physiology with alcohol listed above, the opposite effect happens when the dose is beyond about 50 grams of alcohol. ----- Produced by https://podcastlaunch.pro (Simpler Media)

The topic of this episode comes from a listener. He wrote in part:“Your videos are infused with insights that aid the nondualist in speaking with dualists. However, there is not (or at least I did not see) a single video that addresses these insights together. This request may seem counterintuitive: why should a nondualist need to defend themselves? Sadly, I come from a large family of Fundamentalist Christians, and I am constantly harangued because I am not a Fundamentalist. … Unfortunately, as you may imagine, I do not get very far when I share my view in this way, and so, I would benefit greatly by a video of the aforementioned suggestion.” His actual suggestion was worded as “How to talk to a dualist.” I am calling this episode “How to Speak with a Fundamentalist” but it applies to non-fundamentalist theists as well.

Because some people think conversion therapy should be banned. You can find the source articles at the Christian Post and at Charisma Magazine. Scott and Mark talk about the need for pastoral accountability and good church structure. They also address the problems with "persecution culture" and the lack of love Evangelical and Fundamentalist Christians often have for non-Christians and especially the hate some have for LGBT believers. In today's episode of the The Atheist Experience, Matt Dillahunty is joined by Arden Of Eden. Our first caller today is Andrew from PA. The caller is beginning to question their beliefs and is wondering how our hosts became comfortable with pushing back against their past indoctrination. Unless you have good reason to believe in a particular god, then worrying about any threats or boons derived from believing in that God isn't justified.Up next is Sam from NE who believes that because there are things about the universe that we cannot explain today, that it must be supernatural. Sam also had some “important” information he wanted to bless the audience with.Next up is Aiden from FL who is looking for advice on how to manage their relationship with their family with regards to their opposing views of religion. There is probably no single argument that will help your family become accepting of your atheism, but this single disagreement isn't the whole relationship with your family or how they feel about you as a person.Next is Hank from TX who is claiming that our ownership of non-human animals indicates that we are superior to those animals, and if we are superior, then there is likely a being superior to us.Up next is Robert from OR claims that a belief in a God is properly basic, that it is self-evident and doesn't require a justification to be accepted as true.Next is Rivalod from the Netherlands who wants to know how Atheists can be moral without God. The caller states that they believe morality is based on whatever God says is right. How do we know what God says? Up next is Leo from Canada who has been pushed back theism because of Matt. The caller doesn't understand Matt's position against worshipping a deity, and somehow this has put them back on the fence? Our final caller is Christ from CT is curious as to why Fundamentalist Christians are so against the separation of sex and gender when they themselves ascribe gender to their own God. Part of it is because their books don't refer to sex or gender directly, as well as the fact that it offers a mechanism to control others.

Joe Hudson sits down with me and holds nothing back on telling his story. Joe tells in great detail about growing up in West Virginia in a household where food wasn't the only scarcity but love, compassion and care were also at the top of that list of missing necessities. Abuse, neglect, and the loss of caring parents had major life-lasting effects that started at a very young age for Joe. Joe describes his parents as Fundamentalist Christians who wanted to live off the land, they believed that God will just provide everything for them and that they won't need money anymore. Joe describes growing up in a makeshift-type cabin with no bathroom on a farm because his parents believed that giving away all their possessions was what God wanted. He also talks about his mother walking out on his family and selling him and his siblings to his father for $400, Joe also explains how he believes that Stockholm Syndrome helped him to get through those tough days. Joe explains how music saved him and gave him a new outlook on life and helped to build his confidence. Joe decided to pursue his music career and was excepted and attended a Creative Arts School but was not able to graduate due to his mother not being able to afford it. Joe gets very emotional when talking about watching the news and seeing the death toll of Americans during the early days of the Iraq and Afghanistan War on terror. That was what made him want to join the Army to do his part for his country. This was the first and most pivotal moment that would change the trajectory of his entire life for the better. Joe explains signing in to his Mechanized Unit and going on his first combat deployment with them, he explains how unprepared they were to deploy for 15 months. Joe explains how being stop-loss helped him to make the decision to go to Special Forces Selection and Assessment and how his current Unit at the time was against him going, which gave Joe the motivation and determination to make sure he got selected so that he would not face any retaliation for going to selection if he did not make it.

Happy Juneteenth! Juneteenth is a wonderful reminder of how sometime good news travels slow. It took a while for the news of the Abolition of Slavery, which was led by Fundamentalist Christians, Republicans, and Conservatives, to reach Democrat owned Galveston Slaves, but reach them it did on June 19th, 1866. However, the narrative that is being pushed today in regards to Juneteenth is not one of healing and unification nor does the narrative recognize the foundations for the moral outcry against slavery. Instead, the narrative of CRT is the real agenda here and Christians must be aware of the anti-family and racist agenda that CRT is ultimately forwarding.

This series was first broadcast in the spring of 2012, my last year at Ideas. Since then these shows have been available through the Ideas website. I learned this week that they no longer are, so I am now making them available here. In my original plan these programs were to form one big series with the seven episodes of The Myth of The Secular which I have already posted. They were broken apart only for convenience in scheduling, and because these five seemed sufficiently similar in theme to be able to stand together on their own. What was on my mind, broadly speaking, at the time they went to air, was the so-called “return of religion” - a figure which I thought described a resurgence of religion in philosophy, as much as in politics. In politics this movement is sometimes traced back to the years around 1980. Fundamentalist Christians played a crucial role in the rise of Ronald Reagan in the United States, producing what political theorist William Connolly called “the evangelical-capitalist resonance machine.” In Iran a theocratic revolution replaced the secular government of the Shah with a regime in which the Ayatollah Khomeini became the Supreme Leader. The prediction of an earlier generation of sociologists that religion would soon drown in a rising tide of secularization had failed - and quite spectacularly. In philosophy, the “linguistic turn” had led to widespread acceptance of the idea that our knowledge has no absolutely secure and unassailable foundation. Faith was suddenly something that philosophy and theology have in common, rather than what sets them apart. Parisian philosophers began writing in praise of the apostle Paul as a paragon of committed knowledge.Religion’s restored prominence produced a backlash from the defenders of science and enlightenment. The so-called “new atheists” appeared. “God is not great,” sputtered Christopher Hitchens. Religion is childish, incoherent nonsense, said biologist Richard Dawkins. I found this response obtuse, but not because I wanted to speak for some unreconstructed revenant called religion. I thought rather that there was new ground to be mapped - a new and perhaps unprecedented religious situation to be investigated. Philosopher Richard Kearney, who leads off this series, had then just published a book called Anatheism: Returning to God after God. His new word, anatheism, gave a name to the condition I was interested in exploring - one that was neither theistic nor atheistic in the older sense of these terms. (The God Who May Be, an earlier series in which I first introduced Kearney on Ideas is also available on this site.) The other thinkers in the series echo Kearney - John Caputo speaks of “religion after religion” in much the same sense as Kearney speaks of “God after God.” James Carse makes the case that “belief” is not definitive of religion. Roger Lundin, adapting a phrase of W.H. Auden’s, speaks of “believing again” as something fundamentally different than naive first belief. William Cavanaugh, who had then just published a collection called Migrations of the Holy, argues that the main site of “religion” in our world is not the church but the state. These five comprise the line-up of the series in the following order:Program One - Richard KearneyProgram Two - John CaputoProgram Three - William CavanaughProgram Four - James CarseProgram Five - Roger Lundin

Go to https://beyondhomosapien.com/sound/ to check out our Free Library of Sound Healing MP3s! The real message of Jesus Christ has been confused over the years. Fundamentalist Christians will have you believe that Jesus came to preach the “good news of great joy” that all of humanity was “saved” from their “sins” if they believed in him and had faith that he would forgive their sins. In other words: that we need Jesus to forgive our sins in order to ascend to heaven. If we do not, then we are doomed to hell for all eternity… Good news, right? Here’s the issue: Jesus himself never actually says this. It is a creation of the Christian church that Jesus ever said anything about hell, damnation, or the need for us to say some stupid prayer where we admit how sinful we are. If you take the time to actually read the Bible, it isn’t actually in there… At least, not to the level of certainty that fundamentalist Christians would have you believe. Today let’s talk about the real message of Jesus: that we can forgive ourselves. That we have the power of god inside of ourselves to forgive ourselves of our own sins. Sometimes, what we need betrays our theological box. So the box has to go. That is, we find ourselves facing a circumstance where we DESPERATELY need God to shine… yet it doesn’t fit the way we’ve been told He moves…. Physical healing is one of these areas. It’s a box we create, and a box that can’t withstand the pressure of reality.  My experience…  In the past I came in contact with two groups on two different extremes that theologically didn’t believe in physical healing. It didn’t fit their “intellectual system.”  On one hand, Christian fundamentalists assumed that Jesus healed, and that the disciples healed. But, healing passed away once we had the Bible. We no longer needed miracles to “know” how God is since we could just read about Him in print… Say what?! Yeah, that’s what they said.  Some of the leaders in this movement even said that when we see healing- or other miracles, or prophecy, or speaking in tongues- then it’s a safe bet to assume that’s actually the devil himself trying to deceive us. (You can read their blogs on the Internet, or you can run down to Barnes & Noble and grab their books!) I know. That point-of-view doesn’t fit with places where Jesus said, “The thief comes to steal and kill and destroy.” Then- “I, on the other hand, have come to give you life to the full” (John 10:10).   It’s like these people were more confident in the devil’s ability to trick us than they were the Holy Spirit’s ability to love and empower us… There’s another side, though. On the other extreme were “Christian” liberalists… those who decided that the miracles in the Bible didn’t actually happen (i.e., no Resurrection, no flood and Noah’s Ark, no Jonah in the whale). The logical outcome for this mental head game is, of course, no miracles back then = no miracles now.  In other words, no healing, either. Here’s what’s odd: both of these groups can’t stand each other, yet the practical application of BOTH of these groups is actually the same (what they believe is different; how they live it out is eerily similar!). You accept your lot. You pray. You grin and bear it… But that doesn’t work, does it? Regardless of what theological system they come from, when people NEED a miracle, they suddenly BELIEVE in the possibility of miracles. Sure, there’s some hesitancy… issues of worth and value and merit sometimes creep in…. But grace…. Grace is always bigger.  And better… And the end result is… well, everyone can be healed. Everyone.  Fundamentalist Christians can be healed. Liberal Christians can be healed. Spirit-filled Christians can be healed. Non-believers who don’t identify as Christians can be healed…  ___________________ In this episode we reference two previous talks (download + stream both https://www.overflowfaith.com/p/podcast) Episode 7: No Faith Required Episode 8: Two Kinds of Healing Also, download the free Redemption eBook at https://www.overflowfaith.com/p/redemption-e-book

A pioneer of the progressive Christian movement, John Shelby Spong, returns for the third time to Progressive Spirit.  We discuss his 25th book, Biblical Literalism: A Gentile Heresy. The retired Episcopal Bishop of Newark demonstrates that the gospel writers were not writing material to be taken literally but liturgically. As Christianity moved away from Judaism it lost its ability to interpret the stories about Jesus.  The Christian faith became a matter of believing things that can't possibly be true.   Fundamentalist Christians, says Spong, are heretics.   He charts a course for spiritual thinkers to embrace faith and the modern world. A Look Back at Our Best Discussions on Civil Rights and A Conversation on the Politics of Christian FundamentalismThis week on State of Belief, Interfaith Alliance’s weekly radio show and podcast, host Rev. Welton Gaddy has the week off. So we’ll revisit a couple of memorable past interviews on the history of the Civil Rights movement and the call to engage LGBT activists in the fight for racial justice. We’ve also been eager to share a recently-recorded interview with the author of Superchurch: The Rhetoric and Politics of American Fundamentalism, Dr. Jonathan Edwards, which sheds light on the history of Christian Fundamentalism in the United States and its effects on our political system. Realizing the Inextricable Link Between Racial Justice and LGBT Equality Two years ago, following the Supreme Court’s striking down of DOMA and concurrent gutting of the Voting Rights Act, Welton spoke with two Unitarian Universalist leaders, Rev. Meg Riley and Rev. Rosemary Bray McNatt. They discuss the value of black allies to the LGBT rights movement and vice versa, and the ways in which all social justice movements are inextricably intertwined. Rev. McNatt powerfully explains her concern for the fate of democracy and the interview is just as relevant today, following the Supreme Court’s decision bringing nationwide marriage equality at the same time the nation mourns nine victims of a race-motivated shooting in South Carolina, as it was when first recorded. Congressman John Lewis Reflects on the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Significance of Barack Obama’s Presidency Georgia Congressman John Lewis marched with Martin Luther King Jr. and continues to be a voice for Civil Rights, most recently around the removal of the Confederate Flag from South Carolina’s capitol and other government buildings. He joined Welton two and a half years ago to discuss the second inauguration of President Barack Obama, the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr., the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington and the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. As a member of the first march from Selma to Montgomery, Lewis says, “I never, ever thought that I would live to see a day like we’re witnessing now.” He acknowledges the steep hill yet to be climbed before equality is achieved, but also celebrates the progress that has been made. Fundamentalist Christians are Hugely Influential in Today’s American Politics: A Look at How They Got That Way Dr. Jonathan Edwards has extensively studied fundamentalist Christianity and the worldview that ties this community of Americans together. He joins Welton to define fundamentalism and explain its effect on both individuals and the country as a whole. In his book Superchurch: The Rhetoric and Politics of American Fundamentalism, Dr. Edwards strives to bridge the understanding gap between fundamentalists and everyone else, while speculating on the future of the relationship between the two groups.

Don't Piss In My Pocket And Tell Me It's Raining

The Dalai Lama – revered by many as a highly-enlightened being, a paragon of virtue, someone for us all to emulate. But is he really so enlightened, or is his vision of humankind prejudiced? In his ironically-entitled book "Beyond Dogma," he wrote that "homosexuality, whether it is between men or between women, is not improper in itself. What is improper is the use of organs already defined as inappropriate for sexual contact." His form of Tibetan Buddhism, though not all forms of Buddhism, prohibits oral, anal and manual sex for heterosexuals and homosexuals alike. It has decided which of our body parts are acceptable for giving and receiving pleasure, and which aren’t. According to its… dogma, there will be a karmic debt to pay if we disobey. The fact that I can find no reference that the Buddha himself ever addressed the issues of homosexuality, anal or oral sex is apparently immaterial; In yet another example of the supreme arrogance that only religion and politics can engender, some Tibetan ancient decided to define what the Buddha really meant by what he’d termed 'sexual misconduct'. The Dalai Lama is a fundamentalist, not some new-age modernist, and fundamentalists are consummate dogmatists. Fundamentalist Christians are just as illogical: as far as I can see, the bible never states that lesbianism is a sin, yet they call it one, vociferously. I believe that if there is a god he, she, it, or they created our bodies to be magnificently sensitive to pleasure. In my book, and I don’t think I’m alone here; sex is too joyous and profound to be reserved for procreation alone. Sex can be dangerous, of course. I am acutely aware of this as my own brother died of AIDS. But so can almost any human endeavor, from rock climbing to the consumption of ice cream sundaes. William Butler Yeats said that love has pitched his tent in the place of excrement – meaning that humanity’s deranged hang-ups about sex arise from the fact that our primary sexual organs are also organs of elimination. This long-standing neurosis is quite evident in most religions – Eastern and Western alike..The Dalai Lama is revered by new-agey folks the world over as enlightened and tolerant, yet he continues to parrot the backward, medieval prejudices of a religion that is in dire need of a Reformation. His books and photos adorn seemingly everyone’s home, but we pick and choose from his message, indulging in the parts that make us feel good, and delicately averting our gaze from the parts that make us uncomfortable. Unlike Paganism and Taoism, Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, and Hinduism are manifestly human-centric religions. All of their cosmologies involve the earth being just about the first thing to arise from the cosmos after the cosmos itself. Yet we now know from astronomy that our young planet is two thirds of the way out on the spiral arm of an ordinary galaxy that is one of at least 100 billion. We aren’t the center of anything.Though these religions are obviously wrong in their most basic assumptions about the origin of the universe and the primacy of humanity, billions still follow their other, equally outmoded notions – except when it proves inconvenient – witness the millions of Catholics who practice birth control and get divorced. .And if the religion in question represents some new and exotic import, we merely partake of its sweet, feel-good exterior, and politely ignore the integral parts that require disciplined work or make us uneasy. We are cultural dilettantes, essentially strip-mining every philosophy for its easy ore of ‘spirituality’.The West is so thirsty for spirituality that we often assume that the ancients were wise and compassionate. I beg to differ. I believe that most religious texts, from the Bible and Quran to the Bhagavad Gita enshrine some aspects of the bloodthirsty, cruel, or bigoted failings of humankind. I do love parts of these books – as lyrically-written allegory. But I don’t rely on them to tell me right from wrong, or how to use my own body. Nor do I rely on the Dalai Lama, who may be a decent, peace-loving man, but whose consciousness, from what I can see, is still somewhat limited by ancient prejudices. Steppin' Out of Babylon: Radio Interviews

Wayne Madsen, of http://waynemadsenreport.com, is a courageous investigative journalist and syndicated columnist whose articles have appeared in publications such as In These Times, The Miami Herald, and the Village Voice. Madsen has appeared on 20/20, 60 Minutes and Nightline. He is the author of Genocide and Covert Operations in Africa 1993-1999 and the Handbook of Personal Data Protection. He was a former Officer in the US Navy. He writes from Washington, DC-"inside the Beltline". In this interview he focuses on his most recent book, Jaded Tasks-Brass Plates, Black Ops, & Big Oil: The Blood Politics of George Bush & Co. Because of his background he has a lot of contact with "insiders" who give him information which he's willing to share with us. Just some of the topics he talks about are: Fundamentalist Christians, the deaths of a list of men who disagreed with the Bush administration and who, though they supposedly died in plane accidents or by suicide, Madsen, along with others, thinks were murdered. He discusses what the New World Order means and the long term commitment the Bushes have had to this goal of aone world government starting with Prescott Bush who was involved in business dealings with the Nazis. It is apparent that presently the US Government is subservient to the big corporations and that this was brought about by international agreements (some of them secret) such as the WTO (World Trade Organization, NAFTA (North American Free Trade Association), etc.. The Bushes are true globalists and come from an ultra- capitalist point of view and don't care what happens to the US, says Madsen. He warns us to look closely at the new UN Secretary General about whom we know little and thinks that he MAY be associated with Sun Myung Moon's church. Rev. Moon was an early anti-communist and associated with Nazi's in Germany and he wants a one world government.
