What if there was literally a plastic spoon's worth of microplastics sitting inside your brain right now? In this jaw-dropping and deeply urgent solo episode, Darin Olien breaks down the newest science on microplastics, nanoplastics, brain accumulation, neuroinflammation, endocrine disruption, and the rapidly escalating contamination of the human body. Referencing groundbreaking new research published in Nature Medicine and newly launched U.S. government initiatives, Darin exposes how plastics are no longer just an environmental issue—they are now a human biology issue. From nanoplastics crossing the blood-brain barrier to endocrine-disrupting chemicals like BPA, PFAS, and phthalates accumulating in tissues, placentas, and testes, this episode explores the shocking implications of modern plastic exposure—and, more importantly, what practical steps you can take immediately to reduce your risk.     What You'll Learn The shocking new study finding microplastics in 100% of healthy human brains Why the average brain may now contain roughly a plastic spoon's worth of plastic How nanoplastics cross the blood-brain barrier The alarming connection between microplastics and dementia research Why plastics are not biologically inert substances The endocrine-disrupting chemicals hitchhiking on microplastics How bottled water, tea bags, coffee pods, and Inside our brains. Inside our blood vessels. Inside unborn children. But while the scale of the problem is staggering, the solution begins with everyday choices. What you drink from. What you heat your food in. What you filter. What you buy. Your body is not a landfill—and reclaiming your health starts with refusing to treat it like one."     Bibliography/Sources Primary Scientific Studies Bornstein, S. R., et al. (2025). Most of us have been trained to see the body in silos: diagnose the problem, treat the symptom, move on. But what if that model is missing the bigger picture? In this episode of The Ready State Podcast, Dr. Jeffrey Bland – widely recognized as the father of functional medicine – joins Juliet and Kelly Starrett to unpack a more complete, systems-based approach to health. From a simple (and surprisingly accessible) blood test that can reveal your inflammatory status, to the real role of inflammation as both a healing response and a hidden driver of chronic disease, this conversation challenges everything you thought you knew about “being healthy.”Dr. Bland also shares the deeply personal story that reshaped his entire career and led him to question conventional medicine's focus on downstream symptoms instead of root causes. You'll walk away understanding why everyday choices – like sugar intake, sleep, stress, and even your sense of self-agency – play a far bigger role in longevity than most people realize. Your biological age can drop by over three years in just eight weeks, and the tools to do it are already in your kitchen. This episode breaks down the cutting-edge science of methylation, polyphenols, Yamanaka mimetics, and epigenetic reprogramming that is rewriting what we know about anti-aging, longevity, and human performance. -Watch this episode on YouTube for the full video experience: https://www.youtube.com/@DaveAspreyBPR Host Dave Asprey sits down with Dr. Kara Fitzgerald, ND, IFMCP, a leading voice in functional medicine and epigenetic aging research. Her award-winning clinical studies published in Aging (2021, 2023, and 2025) proved that targeted diet and lifestyle interventions can measurably reverse biological age on validated epigenetic clocks. She is the author of Younger You, an IFM faculty member and Certified Practitioner, and one of the most rigorously credentialed researchers working at the intersection of functional medicine, nutrition, and longevity science today. Together, they go deep on Yamanaka factors, the Nobel Prize-winning discovery that can wind back a 90-year-old cell to its 20s, and the emerging class of compounds called Yamanaka mimetics, polyphenol-based supplements that may replicate some of those same cellular rejuvenation effects without the risks. They cover why polyphenols do the heavy lifting in biological age reversal, how AI is accelerating longevity research, and why the dark matter of nutrition may matter more than macros, carnivore protocols, or ketosis for long-term health. They also get into oxalates, mitochondria, fibroids, ovarian rejuvenation, and why the original Horvath clock may be more relevant than scientists thought. This is essential listening for anyone serious about biohacking, longevity, supplements, functional medicine, anti-aging, brain optimization, human performance, and using smarter not harder strategies to take control of your biology. You'll Learn: How diet, supplements, and meditation reversed biological age by over three years in eight weeks in a randomized controlled trial What Yamanaka factors are and why scientists are calling partial cellular reprogramming the future of anti-aging Which polyphenols do the heaviest lifting for epigenetic rejuvenation, including EGCG, urolithin A, rosemary, marjoram, and yarrow Why the Horvath epigenetic clock may actually be touching on programmatic aging rather than just exposomic wear and tear How AI is unlocking patterns in longevity data that no human researcher could find alone The problem with high-oxalate superfoods and how to get polyphenol benefits without the inflammatory downside Why ovarian rejuvenation may be the highest-leverage Yamanaka application for women's longevity and brain health How compounds like AKG, sodium butyrate, and forskolin may act as Yamanaka mimetics already available today What the PRC2 polycomb clock reveals about programmatic aging and why it matters more than second-generation clocks Why perimenopause does not have to be painful, and how functional medicine addresses it at the root Thank you to our sponsors! - Screenfit | Get your at-home eye training program for 40% off using code DAVE at https://www.screenfit.com/dave. - Viome | Check it out at viome.com and use code 10DAVE for 10% off. Dr. Panzner explains the difference between a pharmacist and a pharmacologist, and why he treats food, supplements, and medications all as "drugs" — anything that alters physiology. He introduces the iceberg effect: no supplement does just one thing, and the unlisted mechanisms beneath the label are often what's driving anxiety, palpitations, low blood pressure, anemia, or that vague "off" feeling people can't trace back to their stack. The conversation digs into real client cases — a vitamin C product spiking adrenaline because of concentrated quercetin, polyphenol stacks dropping blood pressure low enough to make people pass out in hot showers, and B-vitamin reactions tied to MTHFR variants. Tyler and the Hindmarshes unpack why genetics, lab testing, and precision supplementation matter far more than influencer-driven trends, and why the older demographic is especially primed to be taken advantage of by polished marketing teams and 20-second viral sound bites. They close on what BS-free supplementation actually looks like: fewer products, the right products, and a blueprint built around the individual rather than the algorithm. --- Check out Aurmina — a highly rated natural water purification solution made from ionic minerals sourced from volcanic rock.

What if your gut has been signaling a problem for your brain for years? That is exactly what the latest science on the gut microbiome and Parkinson's disease is revealing, and it begins with something as overlooked as constipation. If you have ever dismissed a sluggish digestive system as no big deal, this conversation may be the most important one you hear all year.Salad With a Side of Fries host Jenn Trepeck welcomes Martha Carlin, microbiome researcher, founder of The BioCollective and a woman who traded a corporate career for a microscope after her husband was diagnosed with Parkinson's at 44. What she has uncovered about gut bacteria, endotoxin load, the glycocalyx, and neurological decline is both startling and deeply actionable. This is not fear, it is fuel for better choices. What You Will Learn in This Episode:✅ Why chronic constipation is far more than a digestive inconvenience and how waste sitting in the colon produces an endotoxin load now linked to Parkinson's, depression, autism, and diabetes.✅ What the glycocalyx is, why it matters for everything from gut health to cardiovascular function, and how damage to this critical structure can spread throughout the entire body over time.✅ How H. pylori consumes dopamine in the gut, why that interaction may explain why Parkinson's disease medications lose effectiveness, and what the research from Harvard reveals about this connection.✅ The surprising ways that endurance athletics, over-cleaning with quaternary ammonium compounds, and glyphosate-exposed foods all quietly assault the gut microbiome and compound your risk over time. The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast, hosted by Jenn Trepeck, explores real-life wellness and weight-loss topics, debunking myths, misinformation, and flawed science surrounding nutrition and the food industry. Bland contrasts medication “number needed to treat” examples (statins and TNF-alpha blockers) with personalized lifestyle interventions, noting adherence challenges. He discusses GLP-1 weight-loss drugs as a major pharmacologic advance but raises concerns about long-term effects, discontinuation rates, side effects, and inadequate nutrition if food intake drops. One of the best guides to food variety is colour. And for colour, there's a group of natural plant chemicals called anthocyanins that are getting a lot of attention for their potential benefits on the brain. Anthocyanins are the pigments that give red, purple, and blue plants their rich colouring – they literally put the ‘blue' into blueberries. A few years back on this podcast, I took you through the science of anthocyanins and brain health. In this episode, I'm revisiting that story with new research. In this episode, I'll unpack what this new research review found, how it fits with what we already know about anthocyanins and the brain, and what it all means for your shopping basket and your long-term cognitive health.Links referred to in the podcastPodcast episode 81 on berries and brain health https://thinkingnutrition.buzzsprout.com/808853/episodes/9099255-blue-is-the-new-black-berries-anthocyanins-and-your-brain-healthSystematic review on anthocyanins and cognitive function 2025 https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/41351717Episode transcriptTo access the full episode transcript, go to the following link and select the individual podcast episode and then click on the ‘Transcript' tab https://thinkingnutrition.buzzsprout.comConnect with meInstagram doctimcroweFacebook Thinking NutritionX CroweTim

Caffeine, Polyphenols, and Smarter Training Volume: Total Reps, Fatigue, and Performance On this Valentine's Day episode of Iron Radio, hosts Coach Phil Stevens, Dr. Mike T. Nelson, and Dr. Lonnie Lowery discuss authenticity in sports nutrition communication, then review an editorial in Current Developments in Nutrition (Buckley et al., with Stu Phillips as senior author) highlighting that “proper” nutrition varies by sport demands. They summarize research in the special issue on athletic performance: four papers on caffeine/coffee showing improvements across aerobic and anaerobic outcomes (power output, time to exhaustion, vertical jump, sprint performance, post-activation performance enhancement), reduced perceived fatigue, and possible benefits to hand-eye coordination, with one paper suggesting ~3 mg/kg may be sufficient versus higher dosing. They also note mixed findings on polyphenols/anthocyanins (including black currant data showing more support for recovery than performance) and mention continued creatine coverage amid ongoing misinformation.  After show/network announcements (updated podcast feed via the Iron Radio Nutrition Radio Network, Mike Nelson's free daily newsletter, and Lonnie Lowry's upcoming 2025/2026 second edition book Dietary Supplements in Sports Performance), the conversation shifts to training prescription. Phil explains programming volume via total rep targets (e.g., 30 reps) instead of fixed set/rep schemes to manage good and bad days, emphasize perfect form, and allow flexibility through “buy ups/buy outs,” including leaving the gym on days when submaximal work isn't there. The hosts discuss practical considerations like rest periods, avoiding turning the weight room into conditioning for athletes, tailoring density/rest to sport demands (powerlifting vs field sports), and coordinating training load to prevent staleness and excessive fatigue. They also address hybrid/CrossFit-style programming pitfalls, the need for purposeful periodization and strength development, and how total-dose training can help older lifters maintain muscle while managing joint stress, while still recognizing times when pushing sets is appropriate. 00:00 Welcome to Iron Radio + Hosts Introductions (Valentine's Day Episode) 01:03 Authenticity vs ‘Boring Experts' in Sports Nutrition Communication 02:38 Today's Agenda: New Sports Nutrition Editorial + Training Volume Flexibility 04:28 Research Roundup: Caffeine/Coffee Performance Effects (Dose, Fatigue, Coordination) 08:42 Polyphenols/Anthocyanins & Creatine: Mixed Evidence and Practical Takeaways 09:55 Network Updates, Newsletter, and Upcoming Supplements Book Promo Break 13:16 Training by Total Reps: Auto-Regulating Volume on Good vs Bad Days 18:36 Quality Reps, Rest Flexibility, and Sport-Specific Density (Strength vs Conditioning) 22:33 Strength Work vs. Conditioning: Safer Training and Better Reps 22:57 Coaching Coordination, Fatigue, and the Power of a Taper 23:51 When Coaches Misread Staleness: ‘Run More' and Other Late-Season Mistakes 24:41 Programming Hybrid Athletes: Separate Strength, Conditioning, and Simulation 26:51 Periodization 101: Stop Chasing Three Rabbits 27:26 CrossFit Reality Check: Winners Get Strong (Not Just ‘WOD of the Day') 29:13 What Takes Years: Max Strength and Muscle vs. Quick Aerobic Gains 30:26 Training as You Age: ‘Total Dose' to Maintain Muscle and Progress 33:00 Coming Back for a Meet: Build Back Smart and Don't Rush the Load 34:14 Progression Model + Wrap-Up and Safety Disclaimer Donate to the show via PayPal HERE.You can also join Dr Mike's Insider Newsletter for more info on how to add muscle, improve your performance and body comp - all without destroying your health, go to www.ironradiodrmike.com Thank you!Phil, Jerrell, Mike T, and Lonnie

William is one of the world's leading voices on food as medicine, and together we explore how nutrition, immunity, and brain health are deeply connected, often in ways we underestimate. In this conversation, Dr. William Li shares how the body's defence systems are constantly communicating with the brain, influencing inflammation, cognition, mood, and ageing. Drawing on decades of research, he explains how everyday foods can strengthen immunity, protect blood vessels, and support brain function, not through restriction or perfection, but through consistent, nourishing choices. We discuss why immune health matters far beyond avoiding illness, how inflammation silently impacts mood and cognition, and why nourishing the body is one of the most accessible tools we have for long term resilience. This episode is an invitation to move away from fear based nutrition and toward a calmer, evidence led understanding of how the body heals, adapts, and thrives when supported consistently over time. Here's What We Dive Into:- How the immune system influences brain health, mood, and cognitive ageing.- Why chronic inflammation quietly undermines wellbeing long before symptoms appear.- What angiogenesis is and why healthy blood vessels matter for brain function.- How specific foods support the body's natural defence and repair systems.- Why food as medicine is about consistency, not restriction or perfection.- What the science really says about nutrition and disease prevention.- How everyday dietary choices shape long term resilience and longevity.- Why empowering people with knowledge creates healthier relationships with food.Love, Sarah Ann

Nutritionist Leyla Muedin focuses on a new perspective in Alzheimer's research, particularly the role of microglial cells. She reveals insights from integrative neurologist Dr. David Perlmutter's presentation at the Integrative Healthcare Symposium, emphasizing the significance of microglial cells in Alzheimer's disease. The discussion highlights the traditional focus on beta amyloid plaques and introduces the importance of shifting from the M1 pro-inflammatory phenotype to the M2 anti-inflammatory phenotype of microglial cells. Dr. Perlmutter advocates for addressing systemic metabolic and inflammatory issues, pointing out factors like poor diet, lack of sleep, and high blood sugar, which are crucial in preventing Alzheimer's. The episode delves into lifestyle interventions such as ketogenic diets, fasting, and nutritional impacts to manage and potentially reverse the detrimental shift in microglial behavior.

In this episode of Longevity by Design, host Dr. Gil Blander sits down with Dr. Albert-László Barabási, Professor at Northeastern University, to explore how networks shape health, aging, and nutrition. Barabási explains how biological and social networks influence resilience, robustness, and our ability to recover from stress or disease. He describes aging as a gradual loss of resilience, where the body becomes less able to bounce back from small disruptions. The conversation moves into the world of nutrition, where Barabási introduces the concept of “nutritional dark matter.” He argues that food contains thousands of little-known molecules, many of which play key roles in health but remain largely unmapped and unstudied. Barabási breaks down how these compounds, especially those found in plants, support cellular function far beyond the traditional nutrients listed on food labels. The episode closes with a look at ultra-processed foods and their link to disease risk. Barabási shares new research tools that can help people evaluate what they eat and make smarter choices. Throughout, he reminds listeners that strong connections, between cells, foods, and people, are at the heart of long, healthy lives.  Guest-at-a-Glance

This artery cleansing drink is like exercise in a cup! Unclog arteries and support cardiovascular health with one cup of this amazing drink daily. Reverse arterial plaque and prevent a heart attack naturally!0:00 Introduction: How to unclog arteries naturally0:33 What causes clogged arteries?2:21 How to increase nitric oxide3:00 How to reverse clogged arteries8:35 The best drink to unclog arteries10:33 More cacao benefits If you have damage to your arteries, you're at an increased risk for high blood pressure and clots, which can cause strokes and heart attacks. When you visit the doctor for these conditions, they typically address the symptoms rather than examining the root cause. The root cause of plaque in the arteries is endothelial damage. Endothelial damage and inflammation are repaired by plaque, composed of calcium, cholesterol, and protein.Arterial damage decreases nitric oxide levels, resulting in less control over blood pressure and an increased risk of clotting. Around 90% of heart attacks come from clots!Sunlight is vital to increase nitric oxide. Nasal breathing and magnesium are also essential. You can reverse arterial plaque buildup through a process called reverse cholesterol transport. This mechanism transports plaque in the arteries back to the liver for recycling. This process can be sped up with the help of the following:•Niacin •HDL cholesterol•Exercise •Fasting •Low-carb diets •Bile salts Magnesium controls calcium, so increasing your intake can help to remove it from the arteries. Polyphenols protect the endothelial layer of the arteries, and vitamin K2 helps prevent arterial calcification. Cacao powder is the main component of the best drink for your arteries. It's high in flavonols and stimulates enzymes in the body to produce more nitric oxide. Roasted cacao has been shown to increase blood flow to the arteries, similar to the effects of exercise.Cacao is also beneficial for your heart, brain, skin, and other organs and tissues in the body. It has an accumulative effect and can build up in your system over time. To prepare your drink, combine cacao powder in a glass of water. You can drink it cold or warm. Add beetroot juice powder for an additional boost of nitric oxide and an interesting flavor. You can also add a pinch of sea salt and a scoop of magnesium glycinate for the most potent effect! This is a Premium-exclusive episode of the podcast. To listen to the full episode you need to be subscribed to Sigma Nutrition Premium. What exactly are "antioxidants," and why do they get so much hype? We often hear that blueberries, dark chocolate, and red wine are healthy because they're packed with antioxidants – but is the story really as simple as "more antioxidants = better health"? In this episode, Danny explores the true role of antioxidants in the body, challenging simplistic narratives. Are antioxidants magic molecules that single-handedly prevent aging and disease? Or is the reality more nuanced, with context and balance being key? We delve into these intriguing questions to clarify what antioxidants are, how they work, and what the current consensus tells us about using them for health. Antioxidants are frequently credited as the reason why colorful fruits and vegetables are beneficial. Yet, as past Sigma episodes on polyphenols have noted, the benefits of those plant foods aren't primarily due to direct antioxidant effects. Here we untangle common misconceptions (e.g., "antioxidants = health, always"), distinguish between different types of antioxidants, and explain why simply taking high-dose antioxidant supplements isn't a guarantee of protection – and in some cases might even backfire. By the end, health professionals and science-savvy listeners will understand the diverse roles of antioxidants, the importance of balance, and how to apply this knowledge in practice. You can be insulin resistant for 15-20 years before you develop diabetes!Chronic sugar consumption can lead to insulin resistance, but seed oils can be equally problematic. Seed oils cause damage to the cell membranes (which contain insulin receptors) and damage to the mitochondria. There is evidence that unsaturated fatty acids can reduce the risk of diabetes, but this is not the case with rancid, oxidized seed oils. These highly refined seed oils are full of toxic byproducts such as aldehydes, which create irreversible damage in the insulin receptor. The average person consumes 25%-30% of their calories from seed oils. You can have high insulin and normal blood sugar for many years. Over time, this overworks the pancreas, causing the beta cells that produce insulin to become overworked and eventually stop producing insulin, leaving the body without a mechanism to regulate blood sugar levels. Normal blood sugar should be around 80, which is equivalent to a single teaspoon of sugar in the blood, even though the average person consumes 81 to 131 teaspoons of sugar every day!If you have diabetes or you want to avoid it, avoid these foods:1. Fast food fries and fried chicken 2. Deep-fried restaurant foods 3. Chips/crisps/corn chips4. Doughnuts and pastries5. Sweetened drinks 6. Frozen breaded foods 7. Commercial salad dressing and mayo8.
