Postacie drugoplanowe często mają ciekawe historie, czasami przechodząc znaczące transformacje, a w niektórych przypadkach ich historie mogłyby zasługiwać na osobną książkę.„Król szczurów” rozgrywa się w obozie Changi w Singapurze, kontrolowanym przez Japończyków podczas II wojny światowej, gdzie przetrzymywani byli jeńcy alianccy (Brytyjczycy, Amerykanie i Australijczycy). Autor, James Clavell, był więźniem tego obozu. Głównymi bohaterami powieści są Anglik Marlow i tytułowy „Król”. Dzisiejsza dyskusja koncentruje się jednak na Seanie  Jennisonie.Sean Jennison jest postacią drugoplanową i pojawia się w książce w zaledwie trzech scench. Mimo tego zapada w pamięć. The Anderson Shelter, the pop-up sheds distributed to millions of Londoners during the Blitz was first erected on February 25th, 1939 - in the garden of Mrs. Spong, in Carlsbad Street, Islington. Devised to protect civilians from Nazi air raids, and handed out free to those who earned under £5 per week, the shelters were dug four metres into the ground and covered with earth, provided cramped but potentially life-saving cover for families during bombings. En het levensverhaal van La Divina, vol tragiek en schandalen, zijn nog altijd om van te smullen. Francis van Broekhuizen is al sinds jonge leeftijd geobsedeerd door Callas. Dit najaar staat ze met het Phion orkest in de theaters, met de voorstelling ‘Maria Callas 100 jaar – een leven in aria's' waarin ze het publiek meevoert in het leven van de dramatische sopraan. Floortje Smit en Francis spreken over de betekenis van Callas voor haar persoonlijk én voor de opera. In het tweede uur spreekt Coen Verbraak met strafpleiter Gerard Spong in de serie 'Over Leven', over wat het bestaan de moeite waard maakt. Strafpleiter Gerard Spong werd geboren in Paramaribo, als zoon van de enige psychiater van Suriname. Hij voerde de verdediging in veel geruchtmakende strafzaken en was betrokken bij historische arresten door de Hoge Raad, zoals de euthanasiewetgeving. Twee keer ontsnapte hij aan de dood. De eerste keer was in 1980 in Suriname bij een schijnexecutie en de tweede keer in 2022 in Nederland. Toen werd acute corona hem bijna fataal.

Your Faith Journey - Finding God Through Words, Song and Praise

I am a people watcher. I love watching how people react and respond in various situations and circumstances, and I learn a lot about people and human behavior by doing this people watching. I find it fascinating to watch people's actions when forced to move beyond their comfort zones.  Quite honestly, when any one of us is forced to move beyond our comfort zone because of changing circumstances, we often react adversely. One can expect that when we step outside of our comfort zone, we usually experience added stress and anxiety.  And, when this happens, people can become quite reactive – often displaying unpleasant behavior.  So, the gospel reading on this night is captivating because we see the disciples having to move way beyond their comfort zones. In biblical times, the washing of feet was a non-religious, ordinary part of everyday life. It was as ordinary as brushing your teeth or washing your hands before a meal. It was a secular practice that routinely took place after entering a dwelling, especially if you would be sitting down and preparing to eat a meal.  After all, peoples' feet would get very dirty from all of that walking in those sandals on dusty roads. Furthermore, this foot washing was always done by the lowliest of servants.  So, when Jesus gets up from the table and begins washing the disciples' feet, his action is truly shocking. In fact, it is disgraceful and scandalous, and it moves the disciples to a place of real unease.  It moves them beyond their comfort zones. Reactive Peter, always the outspoken one, always a work in progress, knows that servants wash the feet of their master.  Masters do not wash the feet of their servants. This is just NOT how the world works.  So, certainly Jesus, the one they see as the Messiah, should not be the one touching their feet!  Peter's world is structured by domination, power, hierarchy, and tradition. Foot washing revealed the societal pecking order. It was usually done by slaves, children, and women, those who had no standing in society. The lower class washed the upper class. Now, I have to say, our world is not all that different from Peter's. Those who have power, wealth, intelligence, beauty, and position are the ones who are washed, they make sure they get the best of everything and hire others to do the menial work. Those who don't have power, wealth, intelligence, beauty and position – well, they are the washers. But this night is different, this foot washing is different. Once again Jesus is breaking the rules and the social order is being realigned as Jesus forces the disciples to move beyond their comfort zones.  In the middle of supper Jesus gets up from the table, removes his outer robe, ties a towel around himself, pours water into a basin, and he begins to wash the disciples' feet. With this action, the boundaries that establish status and power are completely reversed, and all human images of protective barriers that provide security are removed. And what is the result? Turmoil fills the room.  Peter is alarmed.  His world is being changed.  This is truly uncomfortable.  Peter does not like it and he does not understand it.   As we ponder Peter's reaction, I ask you to think about the past few years of our lives, about how our world has changed. I ask you to think about how you may have felt threatened by that change. Think about the last time some circumstance forced you to move beyond your comfort zone.  Even when it's for our own good we often resist, get angry, or fight back. At a minimum, we grumble under our breath or vent to a trusted friend. So, Peter responds saying, “You will never wash my feet!  I am hanging on to what I know, to what I have. I don't want you messing with my world. This is just not right and definitely not comfortable.” Today in the church we might respond, “We've never done it like this before and we're just not really interested in starting now.” Jesus is always setting before us one example after another of what God's life in the world looks like.  God's life in this world is always going to shake us up and move us to places that quite frequently seem uncomfortable and downright risky.  For Peter, Jesus' action looks like nothing he has ever seen or done before.  As he reacts, I wonder if he might be pondering, “If this is how the Messiah acts, what will be expected of the Messiah's disciples? Whose feet might I be asked to wash for the love of Christ?” Well, as Peter objects and wonders, he hears Jesus say, “You also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. Very truly, I tell you, servants are not greater than their master.” Listen to the way theologian, John Shelby Spong, describes what Jesus is saying. Spong writes: Peter, do not resist the freeing power of divine love through which I am calling you into a new dimension of what it means to be truly human. Here status needs are not relevant. Those rules apply only in the world of consistent human yearning, the world of human becoming.  I am a doorway for you into being itself.  Come through me and you will become more fully human.  I am inviting you into an experience that will make you whole.  If I do not wash your feet, you cannot be part of the God I am revealing and of the humanity I am offering.  (John Shelby Spong, The Fourth Gospel: Tales of a Jewish Mystic)   In the gospel of John, Jesus is always calling us into a new way of being, new life that truly matters. And, tonight, we see Jesus sets before the disciples and before us an example of love, servant love. That is the kind of love he has lived and that is the kind of love he calls us to live.  By doing this, Jesus has washed away the old ways of domination and hierarchy. He has replaced those old ways with something new, communion and love. There are no feet excluded from God's love, and God's very self is defined as love. There are no feet unworthy of being washed. Even Judas's feet were washed.  And, the unconditional love of Jesus always means moving beyond our comfort zone and going to the places where Jesus goes. Think of all the feet that pass through our lives in a day, a month, a year, a lifetime. What have we done with those feet? What will we do with them? Maybe we ignore them. Maybe we have stepped on them. Maybe we have received them into our lives and maybe we have not.  So many feet. Young, old, tired, lost, angry, hurt. There are all sorts of feet. Feet that have walked through the muck of life. Feet that have trespassed into places they shouldn't have gone. Feet that have stood on holy ground. Feet that have carried the message of good news. Feet that dance to a different beat or walk a path different from ours. Those are the very feet Jesus washed. They are the feet of the world. They are the ones he commands us to wash.  And guess what?  They are no different from our own feet. We too have walked through the muck of life. Our feet have trespassed into places they shouldn't have gone. Our feet have stood on holy ground. Our feet have carried the message of good news. Our feet have sometimes walked a unique, if not strange, path. Well, still feeling the discomfort of this situation, Peter hears Jesus then say, “I give you a new commandment, that you love one another.  Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.  By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” Jesus, through his action of washing the disciples' feet, has just taken on the role of the servant.  He is showing the disciples that love means serving others, all others!  The love he has for them also means providing routine physical, even intimate care for others.  Jesus subverts the religious expectations of the moment by turning this non-religious deed into an act of humility, service, and love. And he moves his disciples way beyond their comfort zones.  Yes, that is where love will always take us. That is what love does because love always takes us to the cross. Tonight, Jesus comes to each one of us and, through his very humble deed, shows us and teaches us what love is all about.  The self-giving love of Jesus connects us to the very source of love, God's very self.  It is a love we will see lifted high on a cross. And it is that self-giving, healing love that empowers us to move beyond our comfort zones as we share God's love for the sake of a very broken world.

Jacqueline Wolf, PhD, is a history profess at Miami University. She has probably read more medical literature pertaining to the history and consequences of c-section in the United States. She is the author of an AMAZING book called "Cesarean Section: An American History of Risk, Technology, and Consequence". 30-40% of babies in the U.S. are born by c-section, and the rate doesn't seem to be in decline any time soon due to the universalization of continuous fetal heart monitoring. Litigation against doctors for things out their control in birth makes matters even worse. Before we get into today's topic, some exciting news. Learn the Gospel (part one of the new Two ways to live training framework) has finally arrived, and is available for purchase. It will be a few more weeks before the books find their way through the US ports and land in our American warehouse.)I know many of you have been wondering and waiting for it to be available, and are keen to think how this resource could be used to teach the fundamentals of the gospel in your churches.To this end, Matthias Media is encouraging churches to run a pilot program in Term 4 (say in two or three small groups) to see how Learn the Gospel fits and works in your context—and offering a friendly bulk price to help you have a go at this. (This is an invitation only pilot—just for Payneful Truth subscribers and a few other churches we're asking.)But onto this week's subject … Who wants to be a conservative?I've lost count how many times over the course of my life that ‘conservatives' and ‘progressives' have fought over different issues in my (Anglican) denomination.Through the fog of time, different figures and controversies rise up and recede in my memory. I see Archbishop Peter Carnley (at that time the Primate of Australia), arguing that the resurrection was a spiritual experience rather than a physical event, and that Christ was not the only path to salvation—and then the godly, gracious Archbishop of Sydney, Harry Goodhew, copping a pounding in the secular press for daring to object (that was in around 2000 I think). I see the radically revisionist Bishop John Spong emerging from the mist, visiting Australia not long afterwards at the invitation of Carnley and the ‘Progressive Christian Network'. And once again the nasty ‘conservatives' were the ones who criticised Spong's denial of pretty much every tenet of orthodox Christian doctrine.Then I think of the long-running skirmishes (starting back in the 80s) over multiple issues—women's ordination, gay ordination, the blessing of same-sex unions, and more. In each case, the ‘progressives' or ‘liberals' sought to change or update the doctrine and morality of Christianity, and in the opposing corner were the ‘conservatives'. And given that on all these issues I found myself barracking for the conservatives, I guess that makes me one. And you too, quite possibly.So how do you feel about being a ‘conservative'?I can't say that the label thrills me to the core.What's a ‘conservative' after all? When we think ‘conservative', we think of a stick in the mud; a reactionary; a stuffy, buttoned-down member of the establishment who wants things to stay the same. Conservatives are risk averse, change averse, and very likely excitement averse. They wear cream blazers over blue chinos. With their thin, cold and (invariably) white hands, they cling to the dogmas and traditions of the past, in a desperate and doomed attempt to forestall the new and better future that everyone else is longing for.Just what I always wanted to be—a conservative.Of course, like many such words in our culture, ‘conservative' and ‘progressive' are dependent on their predicate (or should be). It's like being ‘narrow' as opposed to ‘broad'. It entirely depends what you're talking about. I would prefer my waist to be more narrow and my shoulders more broad. I'd like my fridge to be conservative of the food inside it, and my five-irons very progressive and if possible in the right direction.It all depends on what you're conserving.Interestingly, this is also true in politics.British and European political ‘conservatism' is quite different from American ‘conservatism', because they seek to conserve different things. I've recently been reading George F. Will's book, The Conservative Sensibility, and he describes the difference like this: [The European tradition of throne-and-altar conservatism] has generally sought to conserve institutions and practices, such as social hierarchies and established churches, that were produced by the slow working of historical processes spanning many centuries. American conservatism seeks, as Alexander Hamilton did in the Republic's infancy, to conserve or establish institutions and practices conducive to a social dynamism that dissolves impediments to social mobility and fluency. So American conservatism is not only different from, it is at bottom antagonistic to British and continental European conservatism. The latter emphasizes the traditional and dutiful, with duties defined by obligations to a settled collectivity, the community. Because American conservatism is about individual liberty, it cultivates spontaneous social order and hence encourages novelty.[1]American political conservatism wants to preserve the norms and principles of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution—which are documents largely designed to protect the freedom of the individual from the tyranny of a monarchical government. European conservatism (on the other hand) is much happier for the king to remain in place and to benevolently rule his subjects for their good, according to the ancient traditions. One of the ironies of history is that today, the enemies of American conservatism are not British monarchs but political progressives, whose ambition is to have the government exercise a greater more monarchical power over the individual and society.(As for where Australian political conservatism fits into this schema, I'm not sure I can say. It hardly exists as an intellectual force. There's no throne-and-altar tradition to protect, nor is there a libertarian Constitution to conserve. I suspect Australian political conservatism ends up being a more cautious and practical progressivism. Australians seem increasingly to believe that the government is the most important actor in society, that it is largely to blame for our problems and could solve them if only it had more power and money to spend. The ‘conservative' side of Australian politics seems content to largely go along with these assumptions, offering an alternative that is supposed to be more cautious and sensible than the other guys.)But I digress.The point is: it all depends on what you're conserving. And on the other side, what is it that you want to change or ‘progress'?To come back to Christian debates, Anglican ‘progressives' generally want to improve our doctrine to make it more attractive to the world, while keeping and conserving many of the cultural practices and traditions of historic Anglicanism. And so we have the strange spectacle of modernist Anglican Bishops, spouting ultra-progressive theology, while still clothed in the robes, liturgical practices and church buildings of a centuries-old tradition. Progressive content, conservative style.The Anglican ‘conservatives', at least in my part of the world, are the opposite. They have long since ditched robes, ancient liturgies, archaic language and ‘churchy' architecture, while arguing vigorously for the unchanging, ancient truths of the Bible. Progressive style, conservative content.To put it another way, Anglican progressives want to change the church's doctrine to be more like the world. True Anglican conservatives want to change the world.That's why ‘conservative' is never enough for me, as a label. It's a bit like the American Constitution. It seeks to secure the rights of the citizenry for ‘life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness'; and so to ‘conserve' this Constitution is to promote the personal freedom to experiment and change. As George Will argues, American conservatism encourages novelty.In a similar way, the biblical truth I want to conserve and pass on to the next generation is a charter for transformation. It proclaims a truth that is revolutionary; that transforms lives and cultures, and that is not bound by times or places or traditions. The ancient, unchanging biblical gospel speaks to every culture and language and tradition, because it speaks of the Christ who is Lord of every person and time and culture, and who calls on all people, everywhere, to turn back to him. It looks forward to the time that John saw in his vision, when “the kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ” (Rev 11:7).This is why true theological conservatives should be methodological and cultural progressives. The unchanging biblical truth we preserve and proclaim drives us constantly to change—to change our lives, to change our practices—because we want to change the world through the preaching of the gospel in the power of God's Spirit. We want to see lives transformed through Jesus Christ, who is the same yesterday, today and forever. We want to see our churches transformed, and to grow in love and faith and urgency for gospel mission.So I guess I'm willing to be a conservative—just not in gospel ambition. Let's not, for example, conserve ministry traditions and practices that are no longer fit for purpose, simply because we've always done them. If the trellis needs changing, let's get to work with hammer and nail so that the vine has room to flourish. Let's be constantly progressive in the way we proclaim the unchanging gospel truth that we conserve.Maybe I'm not an unvarnished, unmodified conservative after all.Perhaps I'm a conservative revolutionary.Who wants to join me?PSGeorge Will's book is fascinating. If you're interested in politics and political history (and especially US politics) it's worth a read, even (or perhaps especially) if your political leanings are more progressive. For me, one of the more fascinating aspects of his argument was his attempt to find a rational basis for ‘natural rights' that did not rely on their God-given nature. He argues (pretty persuasively) that the US Constitution is about securing and promoting existing natural rights—rights that we self-evidently have by virtue of simply being human. As the Declaration of Independence puts it: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”However, Will wants to argue that belief in the God who created all men equal and endowed them with these rights is entirely optional. If God is there, well and good; he also created us with the rational capacity to figure out what our natural rights are using our reason. But if God is not there (as Will himself believes), then we can still derive our self-evident natural rights purely from reason, using a version of what Will calls ‘rule utilitarianism'.It's all pretty tortuous and unconvincing (especially if you know anything about utilitarianism and its question-begging approach to the ‘good'). And sadly (for Will's hopes at least) I think it explains why American conservatism as an intellectual movement is in decline, why its political influence is unlikely to grow, and why classical American republicanism is in real trouble. Our postmodern secular world has moved on from the Enlightenment confidence that we could establish morality and rights purely on the basis of reason. Nothing is self-evident any more in a society that does not share in basic Christian assumptions. The capital from a previously more Christian culture has been spent, and the (most Christian) moral virtues and assumptions that undergird American conservatism (individual responsibility, self-restraint, an acceptance of the hardness and unpredictability of life, and so on) are in major decline. And so the system is showing real cracks. The Congress has mostly given up writing laws. The Presidency is gathering more power to itself. There is genuine disagreement over the basic function of the Supreme Court. Both sides are increasingly declaring the other side illegitimate and evil. Populism is on the rise.When you erode the foundations, eventually the structure starts to crumble.Interestingly, the American figures today who are arguing for a return to Constitution-based freedom-loving conservatism (or ‘classical liberalism') are nearly all Christians or Jews of some stripe or other, or at least fellow-travellers with those traditions. I suspect they are fighting a losing battle.The Centre for Christian Living event on ‘Deception' is coming up fast on August 24. Here's a little video of me explaining what's it about.[1] George F. Desiree De Spong is in her second decade of working in holistic medicine and education. Originally coming from a background in finance/training and IT, Desiree changed her direction in 1999 to broaden her knowledge, before settling into the area of lymphology. Completing her studies in Adult Teaching, Desiree developed classes in Lymphatic Enhancement Therapy and has been teaching in New Zealand, Australia and the United States since 2009. Desiree extended her role in the health field, and became involved in research and development. Desiree was awarded a research fellowship with Flinders University in Adelaide, and completed a trial alongside Professor Neil Pillar. The trial into the benefits of the mild frequency vibration that patients clinically diagnosed with arm lymphoedema, secondary to breast cancer surgery in November 2010. In 2018, Desiree also received a grant with ethics approval, to study the effects of vibrational technology on arthritis. Desiree is passionate about creating a partnership between holistic practices and traditional medical practices. Over the last two years Desiree became involved in the design and development of FLOWpresso, which has the capability to form this beneficial relationship. "I don't define divine the ways religion people does which is about earthly life tribalism and afterlife tribalism, I would define divine secularly (inner beauty is the definition.)" -Antonio Myers "The last section is an eye-opener. It deals with "Jesus for the Non-Religious," a phrase from Lutheran theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer who envisioned a new religionless Christianity. Bishop John Shelby Spong, like many others, laments the doctrines of conservative Christianity which have given rise to the religious anger that fuels the hatred of women, homosexuals, and non-believers in the inerrancy of the Bible. "I submit," he counters, "that this constant onslaught of ecclesiastical negativity comes directly from our theistic portrait of God, who has been traditionally understood as a punishing parent figure." The themes of guilt and degradation have been hammered home to believers in millions of sermons and Bible tracts. This religion-based anger is divisive and characterized by enmity for outsiders and strangers. Jesus offers another option. Spong sees him as the breaker of tribal boundaries. He presented to his disciples and others "a new and inclusive kind of life" outside of tradition and in solidarity with all people. Spong also sees Jesus as the breaker of prejudices and stereotypes, and this makes him really relevant to our times when race, gender, and sexual orientation are the major areas where hatred divides people from each other. And, finally, there is Jesus as the breaker of religious boundaries, which was, of course, the thing that got him into so much trouble." Equally controversial is Spong's assertion that religion is simply a human construct designed to reduce the inherent anxiety of being human. We are hard-wired for survival, so humans created a theistic God who would rule from the heavens, and formed a Christian religion designed to replicate the false security of an insular tribal structure. It's rather novel for an Episcopal bishop – a man who has devoted his entire life to Christianity – to reject the major teachings of his faith. While Spong is never unkind, he is not afraid to call out his fellow Christians on their antiquated beliefs, tendency towards righteous anger, and harmful prejudices. At the end of this fascinating deconstruction, Spong argues for a new understanding of Jesus that I found inspiring and moving. Jesus wasn't divine, but rather fully human – he lived life to its fullest, ignored social boundaries, preached inclusion, and “loved wastefully,” an expression that I rather like." Hank Hanegraaff, the host of the Bible Answer Man broadcast and the Hank Unplugged podcast, reflects on the teachings and recent death of John Shelby Spong, who for many decades influenced a great number of people within the Episcopal Church. Spong was well known for rejecting essential doctrines of the historic Christian faith, including the doctrines of the Trinity and the Incarnation, Virgin Birth, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. But consider the words of St. Paul, who asked, “If it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you [like Bishop Spong] say that there is no resurrection of the dead? If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith. More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead. But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either. And if Christ has not been raised [as Bishop Spong preached], your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied. But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead” (1 Corinthians 15:12–20 NIV).
