The Power of 3 has hit the road once again. Dave and Kenny made the trip down the M74/M6 to Manchester, for John Nathan-Turner Day, which was held at the Anthony Burgess Institute. They discuss Me and Him and Who, Stephen Wyatt's play about JNT and his partner Gary Downie, and speak with producer Gareth Kavanagh about it, as well as Stephen, actor Richard Unwin who plays JNT, and JNT's biographer Richard Marson. We also get the thoughts of Blue Peter's 42nd presenter Abby Cook - a Doctor Who fan, who just happens to come from Scotland!

We're just one week away from The Power of the Doctor in which Jodie Whittaker's Doctor leaves our screens and Chris Chibnall's time as Doctor Who showrunner comes to an end. However you feel about this, it cannot be denied that it has been an interesting few years. With this in mind, and with a look at the episode's first trailer (which includes a look at Sophie Aldred and Janet Fielding returning as Ace and Tegan), we consider what might be in store and how we feel about the past four years of Doctor Who. Joining Christian Cawley and James McLean this week is Gareth Kavanagh!
Our podcast this week welcomes back Gareth Kavanagh for a longer chat, mainly about Cutaway Comics' latest projects, selling issues in the basement at Gallifrey One, and taking a trip to Aldbourne in honour of 1972 Doctor Who serial The Daemons. This week's show is a bit shorter than usual, to let you find out what we think about the Hugh Grant Doctor Who rumour, and have some fun with some possible spin-off ideas. In case you had forgotten, Hugh Grant was approached to lead Doctor Who way back before Christopher Eccleston was cast. He had also appeared in Steven Moffat's Comic Relief special The Curse of Fatal Death as the final male incarnation of the Doctor. To discuss Hugh Grant's Doctor Who potential, Gareth Kavanagh joins Christian Cawley and James McLean, with a few ideas of his own. There is also some Mandalorian and Book of Fett talk, for the sensitive among you. This week Christian Cawley chats with Cutaway Comics' Gareth Kavanagh about Lytton, Omega, Brian Blessed, and accidentally discovering crowdfunding. Doctor Who fandom has been gifted with rare treats over the years, from comics and novels to audiobooks, audio plays, and independent movies. Anyone engaged with Doctor Who is aware of at least one of these alternate spins on the so-called "Whoniverse" but such productions are often limited by licenses. After all, the BBC owns Doctor Who. But, the corporation does not own the characters created by non-BBC writers who worked on the classic series. That's where Cutaway Comics comes in. In this week's show, Gareth Kavanagh tells us all about Cutaway Comics, its early success with the Eric Saward-approved Lytton, the development of Omega, and just how he got Brian Blessed involved to record the audio adaptation which was fulfilled thanks to support on Kickstarter. What? What?! WHAT?! So we're midway through Doctor Who Series 12 and we've just been given a curveball the like of which has never been seen in the show. Judoon, the return of Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman), a buried TARDIS, a fugitive hiding on earth, a new incarnation of the Doctor... and more mystery about Gallifrey. Standard episodes just don't do that, do they? But who was watching beyond the legion of Doctor Who fans? Sunday night, a perennial TV favorite on the other side... it takes a massive star to combat a show like Dancing on Ice. So it is with a certain amount of excitement and trepidation that Christian Cawley, James McLean, and Gareth Kavanagh got together this week to discuss Fugitive of the Judoon... As an adjunct to our recent look at the best Dalek stories of each era of Doctor Who, Gareth Kavanagh joins us to look at the candidates, and discuss some of his favorite Dalek adventures, and move the conversation towards the most recent. Just imagine. Perhaps out of admiration for the Dear Leader, or in some bizarre timeline, The Absolute Boy has been cast as the Doctor himself. That's the background for this special podkast with a K, in which Christian Cawley and a recently woke* Gareth Kavanagh discuss how a Corbyn-centric edition of Doctor Who Magazine might read. Who might be Corbyn's favorite Doctor? Wouldn't he feel more at home in "Manhole Monthly"?
It's a simple premise: would the Tenth Doctor work in the Fourth Doctor's stories? Or vice versa? Could you reasonably swap the Third and First Doctors over? You asked for it, so here it is: James McLean and Gareth Kavanagh discuss the various events of the 2017 #DoctorWho Christmas special, Twice Upon a Time, in which the Twelfth Doctor breathes his last. And did _she_ really have to come back? It's time to sit back and find out what we thought, as we said goodbye to Peter Capaldi… and hello to Jodie Whittaker as the thirteenth Doctor Who!
Star Wars, Blade Runner, Alien, Terminator -- all movies with special editions, directors' cuts, and reboot/sequel/prequel continuations that fundamentally alter the original stories. Lots to talk about in this week's #Doctor Who podKast, in which Christian Cawley and Gareth Kavanagh talk comics, Dream Lords, villains, #Marvel movies and Gareth's upcoming events, including A Morning with Louise Jameson on July 2nd, and the Starburst International Film Festival on 26th-28th of August.
We'll be honest, our thoughts on comic strip The World Shapers don't dominate this week's #DoctorWho podKast, which veers this way and that with topical chat (including the strange slowness in the media's reaction to Gareth Thomas' passing) and an interview with Gareth Kavanagh about the forthcoming Audience with Bob Baker at Manchester's Fab Cafe (http://www.wegottickets.com/event/352929) Your hosts this week are James McLean, and Christian Cawley.
We're bringing you a mammoth 2 hour Doctor Who commentary podKast this week as Christian Cawley, Brian A Terranova, James McLean, and Gareth Kavanagh look back at the serial that closed Season 18 and Tom Baker's seven year tenure in Doctor Who, Logopolis! Did the team enjoy it? Perhaps it's not the classic they thought it was? Cue up your DVD, and hit play at the same time as the podKast team to enjoy a whole new commentary for Logopolis!
Have too many adverts crippled our erstwhile home, Kasterborous.com? With the news that the once "Mighty K" is losing another pair of editors - and perhaps the entire writing team - Christian Cawley and James McLean mull over the recent events, complete with a Star Trek-style analogy. Thanks, Jim... PLUS! Gareth Kavanagh teases the third issue of seminal #DoctorWho fanzine Vworp Vworp!, which is extremely likely to be completed and released during 2016!
Episodes 3 and 4 of the four-part 1979 adventure The Horns of Nimon get the kommenatary treatment this week. James McLean, Brian Terranova and Gareth Kavanagh await your company, so cue your DVD, and hit play...
So, that was an odd week. In the midst of some conscious uncoupling from Kasterborous, James McLean and Brian Terranova embark on a discussion of Doctor Who Series 9, episode 3: Under the Lake. Considering elements like direction, theme, and even whether the episode should have a different name, James and Brian also spend a few moments trying to get their heads around Class, the new Doctor Who spinoff that nobody was calling out for... Look out for cameos from Christian Cawley and Gareth Kavanagh.
Gareth Kavanagh joins Christian Cawley for this week's #DoctorWho podKast, discussing everything from #MissionDALEK to the differences between MP3 and FLAC. But on the way, they stop off and spend some time chatting about the current state of the omnirumour, the rather optimistic collection of rumours concerning the discovery (or otherwise) of some (or all) of Doctor Who's missing episodes. Watch out also for a brief chat about the Doctor Who Series 9 revelations, the Dad's Army trailer and the Lethbridge-Stewart series' revised schedule.
Comic-Con might be the jewel in the crown of the international convention scene, but we're more fond of smaller, intimate events. As such, we've invited Gareth Kavanagh, the man behind the #DoctorWho Vworp events (and acclaimed Vworp Vworp! fanzine) and more recent offerings such as An Evening with Waris Hussein and An Afternoon with Terrance Dicks to explain to us just how he produces these friendly, relaxed mini-cons. Gareth also joins Christian Cawley in discussing various news items and tangental nonsense. Click play to listen!
Wow. After last week's "low-key" podKast with Christian Cawley and James McLean, this week we bring in Gareth Kavanagh and the conversation swings and turns from Doctor Who video games and New Adventures to other podcasts, past podKasts, and Philip Martin's upcoming East of Heysham, which Gareth is producing. All in all this is an eclectic podKast, which also includes an update on Vworp Vworp! issue 3.
We've brought you a lot of features recently about one-time communist Malcolm Hulke, the classic #DoctorWho scriptwriter whose career was the subject of a pamphlet, 'Doctor Who and the Communist', and an event, "An Afternoon with Terrance Dicks". Well, this is the last portion. The podKast team takes a break this week so that you can listen to Gareth Kavanagh (occasional podKast guest, spiritual co-host and 'Vworp Vworp!' editor) interview the great Uncle Terrance about his friend and colleague Malcolm Hulke. Without Hulke, Terrance would never have been Doctor Who scriptwriter, then editor, then novelist. He has a lot to say about the man, as you might expect. The full podKast team will be back next week (we expect!) but until then, make yourself a drink, click play and close your eyes and feel the full atmosphere of Terrance Dicks' chat about his friend and colleague Malcolm Hulke.
It's podKast time! This week we again relied on Google Hangouts for our weekly discussion of all things #DoctorWho, with guest Gareth Kavanagh, editor of the amazing Vworp Vworp! fanzine and producer of various Doctor Who flavoured productions in Manchester. Gareth joins usual hosts Christian Cawley and Brian A Terranova to talk Lego Doctor Who, whether Jenna Coleman is staying or going, and offer some very interesting recommendations.
Kasterborous #DoctorWho podKastWe've a special guest on this week's Doctor Who podKast in the shape of Gareth Kavanagh, who joins us for a full hour (and the rest) of news discussion and fanzine sparring. As well as covering Steven Moffat's recent comments at the Hay Festival, Christian Cawley, James McLean and Brian Terranova also quiz Gareth on this thoughts about the possibility of Doctor Who ending back in 2008, the recent attempt to shift a 16mm film of The Wheel in Space part 3 on eBay and there's even time to have a chat about the amazing Doctor Who/Rocky Horror Show mashup by The Hillywood Show, which if you haven't seen yet should be clicked immediately in the shownotes below. After that, we still managed to squeeze in a little preview about Vworp Vworp! issue 3 (which features an interview with #AlanMoore), which is still in production, and Gareth had some interesting questions for Christian and James about Kasterborous Magazine 2, which is out now. Time to hit play!
In this week's podKast with a "K" we welcome Doctor Who fanzine producer Gareth Kavanagh, editor of Vworp Vworp! as a guest for the full show! Christian Cawley and James McLean are in the hotseat too, with a nice selection of topics under discussion. To kick it off, we mull over the recent Buzzfeed.com list based around the idea of how Doctor Who might have been different had it been created in the USA rather than in Television Centre. Following this, we spend a few moments appreciating the contributions that the late Christopher Barry made to Doctor Who between 1963 (The Daleks) and 1979 (The Creature from the Pit). Given that we have unofficial fourth podKaster Gareth Kavanagh on hand as well, there's also a bit of missing episodes chatter in there for you lucky people as well, not to mention some updates on the progress of Vworp Vworp! issue 3... Rounding off the show (yet taking up a greater chunk of the running time than either of the other topics) are our recommmendations, with 1977 serial Underworld getting the lion's share of the discussion.
Joining me this week for the weekly news and discussion segment is our good friend Raissa, who chat with me about a number of topics, which include our thoughts about 'An Adventure in Space and Time.' Since recording BBC America have announced the premier for the movie as 22 November. Just one day after the UK premier. We also discuss Steven Moffat's proclimation that 12th Doctor Who actor Peter Capaldi as being a national treasure. Our guest this week is Gareth Kavanagh the director of the 'Who At 50' fringe festival, which is taking place in Manchester between the 16 and 30 November. Garath talks about all the exciting events being held to celebrate Doctor Who in Manchester and also talks a little about the recent recovery of 9 Patrick Troughton episodes as well as the casting of Peter Capaldi as the 12th Doctor. So tune in for this very Doctor Who episode of SFP-NOW and keep an eye out for our 50th Anniversary special, which will go out on November 22. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This week's podKast brings a selection of interviews from the recent #doctorwho missing episodes event in London. Thanks to Gareth Kavanagh you can expect to hear from Frazer Hines and Deborah Watling - who both appeared in the recovered episodes of The Enemy of the World and The Web of Fear - and writer Mark Gatiss, who tells us something about an upcoming #Sherlock episode...
Running from July 1st at the Fab Cafe in Manchester is a stage adaptation of Robots of Death, the classic 1977 Doctor Who serial written by Chris Boucher. Behind the production is Gareth Kavanagh, and he makes a special appearance on this week's podKast (with a K) to discuss that and other shows with a Doctor Who theme that are lined up for the summer. We'll have full confirmed details later this week for Robots of Death, it's stage-sequel Storm Mine and an appearance by Philip Martin (Vengeance on Varos) but in the meantime, click play to enjoy! This week's Kasterborous podKast features a fascinating discussion with Gareth Kavanagh about the second Doctor Who Magazine love-in that is Vworp Vworp! #2! Long-term readers of Kasterborous will recall that the first issue of Vworp Vworp! featured a couple of contributions from this very site, not least in the shape of part 1 of Time Leech, our own Doctor Who comic strip. But Vworp Vworp! was much more than a fanzine with a comic strip in it - rather it was a thing of beauty, with the professional quality design, printing and writing contributing to a pinnacle of fanzine production. In many ways it was like a copy of DWM that is itself about DWM. One of the key characters in the early days of Doctor Who Magazine (back in the Weekly/Monthly days) was Abslom Daak, the insane Dalek killer, and his band of Star Tigers. Daak features heavily in the next issue of Vworp Vworp!, and Gareth Kavanagh tells us a little bit about this and some other features coming up in the magazine. EDITOR'S NOTE: This is an archive podcast, recently rediscovered and uploaded to iTunes. Currently a new version of Vworp Vworp, collecting issues 1 and 2 plus extra features, is available.
