The big big bonus this time is a full-on hour of Halloween talk with sometime guest Zo from the Geeking Off podcast. The big news is the new theme song. The other news is a report of summer movies including the revelation of who won the stakeless Critical Game! Okay we snuck this one in. The movie theme this time around is "movies that depict a future at the time they were created, but has since chronologically passed as of 2017." Not sure if there's a better way to say that. Regardless, we honestly managed to pick three of the loosest adherents to this topic with The Apple, Escape from New York, and Terminator 2: Judgment Day. What? Never seen nor heard of The Apple? Well tell us you don't want to after hearing us talk about it.Oh hey, also this time around we're joined by special guest Matthew "Zo" Lorenzo from the Geeking Off podcast. Jon, Jeremy, Steele, Zo. Primary focus on Movie Club this time around with the 1985 William Friedkin forgotten gem, To Live and Die in L.A. Also, other stuff. Here's part 2 of the forum results of Madbeard, Steele and Zo. This time, Zo's report on a month of terrible Halloween movies. Also some diversion dialogue regarding Doctor Strange and the current state of Marvel movies. A tangent about the upcoming Wolverine movie somehow led to a tangent of Ryan Murphy shows we don't appreciate (which obviously led to more Pitch Perfect talk. Also, Zo hates Ghostbusters. Lotta hate this time. Sorry. An apt end to 2016, maybe.Download here!
Madbeard, Steele and Zo get a quick Sing Street chat in before resuming the grand Movie Club experiment with a discussion of Capricorn One. We get all this along with a reveal of the next Movie Club pick and, of course, the usual tangents.Download here!
Hey I spoke to Rhett for a couple of hours the other week. Trust me, it was a great conversation that tackled a lot of elements where business and entertainment meet. Please keep in mind it was recorded just a bit ago (during the RNC), so that will explain the anachronisms. Some topics:1. Melania speech2. The nature of podcasting3. Advertising4. Torrents and password-sharing5. Streaming vs. networks6. Netflix strategy7. Other streaming services (I mention that horror movie one. I meant Shudder, not Chiller.)8. Online shopping and delivery9. Klosterman's new book10. Robbing the millenials?11. Examples of other podcasts12. Podcast namesDownload here!
So we kick off the Movie Club project with a real winner, if by winner we mean the best case of European child abuse in the 1970s. Fernando Arrabal's Long Live Death is confounding, surreal, thought-provoking, but also quite bad. Even so, it yields stimulating conversation despite mild disagreement on what the film is actually saying. We tangent slightly toward the strength of symbolism generally in films as well as a sober wrap-up talk of our own recent filming project.Download here!If you're interested, the next Movie Club project will be Capricorn One.
We resume a conversation about Batman movies with a little bit of 10 Cloverfield Lane for good measure. Ultimately, however, the conversation angles more toward our culture of amateur film criticism and how that affects storytelling in the 21st century. It's our usual drivel. This was recorded the same night as Geeking Off 154. You get Madbeard, Steele and Zo.Download here!
The Batman/Superman conversation meandered off to Netflix, Stephen King, Spike Lee, The Cure, David Cross, Sally Field, Disney, Vanillaroma, Fantastic Four, Ant-Man and a bit of time on the Rogue One trailer.Afterward we tell a genie joke and start up a plan for future b-movie watchings. Then we mention David Gordon Green somehow. Also Jeremy breaks a Geeking Off record for namedrops.Okay also, some talk about Dario Argento and Salo: 100.Zo goes on about the panic movement and Italian neorealism.Jeremy goes on about Peter Bogdanovich, then we mention a lot of Orson Welles stuff.Download here!Oh and part 2 of this conversation is likely on its way.
Jeremy, Jon and Scott discuss movies with a quickie talk about the pre-Oscars (including a very white version of some of the controversy) along with Sundance talk and anticipation of some of the upcoming movies for this year. A year from now we'll look back on all this with some pretty intense hilarity.0:00 -- Jeremy's Raiders!: The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made7:18 -- Favorite movies of 20159:21 -- 2016 Academy Awards "should wins"47:40 -- Sundance report1.07:20 -- What we think might be the best movies of 2016Download here!
Our final Star Wars commentary is behind us! We had some outside commentary suggesting that this one is the best. Admittedly, it is pretty good. Very nice to see this one again. It's actually been a lonely long time since I've seen it.One thing that has been pointed out to me that I forgot to mention about this movie -- notice how the evil Empire always takes prisoners, but the good Rebellion always shoots to kill.Film starts at 3:07Download the podcast here! Here's a link to a version of a Star Wars Battlefront commercial that has the Ewok getting shot in the face:Â https://youtu.be/nqX9BBaB4i0 (check out about 0:45)Here's the link Zo sent us with the theory about Jar-Jar as the true phantom menace:Â https://youtu.be/8yy3q9f84EA
This one's long overdue. Fresh off our Empire Strikes Back commentary, we spill into a somewhat ignorant analysis of the main Episode VII trailer. Yeah, that one that has the Empire Strikes Back music in it -- not the international one. We also provide somewhat of a wishlist for the new movie. It's coming soon and I for one have never been more skeptical of how good the movie can possibly be.Download here!
Jon, Scott and Phil for this movie commentary. Empire's considered the best. Does it hold up? What hasn't been said. Listen and watch if for no other reason that it's a great flick.Watch The Empire Strikes Back along with us. Movie starts at 1:27.Download here!
Hey hey, we're taking a short break from the Star Wars commentaries just a tiny bit. This one here's a one-on-one with Jon and our visiting Geeking Off girl Stephanie to talk a couple of quick things. Salt Lake's Comic Con happened a couple of weeks ago and both of us have a mild report of what we saw. Hey, ever hear of a hot new TV show called Mr. Robot? Well, you probably should. Anyway, that's our second topic.Mr. Robot spoilers start at 41:14Download here!
That's right. Not Episode IV. Not A New Hope. Star Wars.We watch the original theatrical version with its lovable flaws and all. You'll hear five voices: Madbeard, Zo, Steele, Chad and Phil. Yep. It's a Star Wars party.I don't think Luke is that whiney. Listen in.Download here!
We continue the Star Wars commentary with Episode III! Is this the best or worst of the prequels? It starts with a huge battle, but then again that battle has a coughing robot. It's grittier, but then again it's more CGI-y. Hayden Christensen's even whinier, but then again his hair is pretty fabulous.Phil joins again along with Chad and Steele. Joy abounds.(movie starts at 4:32)Download here!
On to Episode II! This one's just a little rougher. I feel its roughness answers the question regarding whether Episode I or II is superior. This time it's just a very low key Chad, Steele and yours truly. Join us for the movie and stay for the only slightly subtle sarcasm.Download here!
Anticipating the release of Episode VII, we're gonna try to pack in a commentary of each Star Wars movie before then. Should we have started with Episode IV? Probably, but this is our big chance to watch 'em in this order.Download here!(this is another Geeking Off/Jon Madsen Movie Commentary hybrid)
