For years, the Toronto painter Gordon Shadrach has been making stunning oil portraits that investigate the way Black men are represented in society. But in his new exhibit, “the earth is always shifting, the light is always changing,” Gordon unpacks his cancer diagnosis and the year of isolation that followed it. He sits down with Tom Power to tell us how illness and recovery affected him and his art. You can check out a selection of Gordon's paintings on our Instagram (@cbcq). If you're interested in hearing more conversations with artists, take a listen to Tom's interviews with Hangama Amiri, Wanda Koop or Geoff McFetridge.
Winner of the 2023 SXSW Audience Award for Best Documentary Feature Dan Covert's GEOFF MCFETRIDGE: DRAWING A LIFE focuses on one of the most prolific artists of his time, Geoff McFetridge, an artist who has undoubtedly influenced the way the world looks. His art is everywhere—on your Apple watch, in countless galleries around the world, in title designs for films by Sofia Coppola and Spike Jonze, and in collaborations with Nike, Hermès, Warby Parker, and more. The antithesis of the archetypal artist fueled by drugs, alcohol, and chaos, what sets the prodigious McFetridge apart is his obsessive quest to balance family with a creative life. In GEOFF MCFETRIDGE: DRAWING A LIFE, director and fellow artist Dan Covert offers unprecedented access into Geoff's multifaceted world, painting an intimate portrait of a man guided by intention and authenticity. Director and Producer Dan Covert joins us for a conversation on what initially drew him to McFetridge's work, how working with Executive Producer Spike Jonze impacted the final cut, getting to know McFetridge beyond his art, and his own background as an artist and graphic designer. In this episode, I talk with artist and director Dan Covert, about his new documentary film “Geoff McFetridge: Drawing a Life” that recently premiered at SXSW, picking up an Audience Award, and is about to be released on VOD. "Drawing a Life" is a poetic and intimate portrait of an artist. In an era dominated by influencers and social media, Geoff McFetridge works to live with intention and authenticity, an increasingly rare practice–more relevant now than ever. Geoff's art is everywhere: from Apple watch faces, to solo shows around the world, to movie titles for Spike Jonze. But this film is more than a primer on Geoff's prolific career. It's about the choices we confront in trying to lead meaningful lives. Geoff McFetridge has been called “the most famous Canadian artist you've never heard of.” As a graphic artist and painter, he's collaborated with directors such as Spike Jonze and Sofia Coppola, designed for brands like Nike and Apple, and created huge murals for Ottawa's transit system. In a rare interview, Geoff tells Tom how the DIY culture of skateboarding in Calgary influenced him to get into art, how he ended up designing the Beastie Boys' Grand Royal magazine, and how he keeps one foot in the world of art galleries and one foot in the world of corporate design.

Geoff McFetridge has rules, and he himself only knows how to break them. Or follow them, really. Over the course of multiple decades, the Canadian-born, LA-based painter, designer and overall creative has established an aesthetic that is, as he says, "the opposite of an idea." The funny thing is that, within that saying, there is basically the universe. He is the universal artist, and he is telling stories better than ever. The following is our podcast conversation with Geoff that took place this summer with Juxtapoz editor-in-chief, Evan Pricco, for an interview that was to be in our Fall Quarterly and in conjunction with his upcoming release with Vault by Vans. We get a unique story about how Geoff approaches a collaboration, how his painting career took off over the last decade and the special personal stories he tells in his commercial work and his quiet ubiquitous body of fine artwork. The Radio Juxtapoz podcast is hosted by FIFTH WALL TV's Doug Gillen and Juxtapoz editor, Evan Pricco. Episode 077 was recorded in August, 2021 in Los Angeles and London. Follow us on @radiojuxtapoz

Today we are airing one of the panel sessions we held this past February at the Blister Summit, and this is a great conversation. We brought together four very accomplished artists and designers to discuss the intersection of art and the ski and snowboard worlds, as well as the broader outdoor industry. Our panelists are Yorgo Tloupas, co-founder of Black Crows Skis; Geoff McFetridge (who has worked with brands like Patagonia, Nike, & Apple; has appeared twice previously on the Blister Podcast, and is Jonathan Ellsworth's telemark coach); John Fellows, who lives in Crested Butte, designed our Blister Summit logo, and whose artwork is displayed all around the outdoor industry); and Travis Parr, co-founder of Icelantic Skis, and the person behind Icelantic's very distinctive artwork.TOPICS & TIMES:Intros: Yorgo Tloupas (4:03)Geoff Mcfetridge (5:29)John Fellows (7:01)Travis Parr (8:00)The current state of art in the ski world (11:13)Skis as a canvas?
