I want to start by being clear: This is a topic I've covered before. I'm covering it again because, based on the resumes that come to me for consults, ya'll haven't gotten the message yet. In addition to touching on this topic in several episodes, I specifically covered job duties and achievements in episode #174. I'm going to expand on the content from that episode in this one. What I seeLet's start with what I see on almost every resume that comes my way: either there isn't an achievement in sight, or the few achievements that are there are mixed in with bulleted job duties – and they are poorly written. This creates what we resume writers call “death by bullets.” A looooong laundry list of job duties and maybe a few achievements that don't impress the reader and causes them to lose interest fast. Job duties are important, because this is your opportunity to tell the reader what you did on a day-to-day basis. This is particularly helpful when you have had job duties outside what someone with that job title would normally have. Job duties tell the employer WHAT you did. There is an assumption that everyone with XXX job title does approximately the same thing on a daily basis. Achievements, on the other hand, tell an employer HOW WELL you did your job. This is your opportunity to show how much money you made or saved, how you improved efficiency, increased retention…whatever is appropriate for your job function. Think of it this way. If you were a Nike athletic shoe, your job description might read:Made of rubber. Come in a variety of color combinations. Includes shoelaces and an insert. Can be spot-washed by hand. Can be worn for athletic or casual wear – by men and women. Here are your achievement bullets: Shaved 7.8 seconds off Sue Smith's running performance in the mile. Received prime placement in athletic shoe stores including… Played key role in Jonathan Jones' 15th-place finish in the Boston Marathon. Generated $1.2 gazillion dollars top-line revenue. Now, let's break down the specifics of job descriptions and achievements. Job descriptionsThis should be a 2-to-3-line paragraph of the daily job duties you performed – either most frequently, those that are most applicable to the specific position you are applying for, or those not normally performed by someone with your job function (but only if you want to continue to perform those duties). There's no room for fluffy words or extra verbiage in this paragraph. Stick with the most important, most relevant, and/or most differentiating tasks. Here's an example: Aligned marketing plans and GTM tactics to drive audience awareness and growth for $12M international entertainment product. Drove branding, design, website, video production, customer journey, social media, billboards, subway ads, taxi tops, paid ads, customer experience improvements, celebrity and influencer partnerships, and content creation. Here's another example: Drove all management and operational components including reporting functions, scheduling, hiring, onboarding, training, policies / procedures, compliance, and strategic planning. Collaborated with marketing director to promote and grow all offices. Managed P&L including net profitability, net revenue per visit, and net cost per visit. Note that these are paragraphs – not bullets. Bullets should be reserved for achievements ONLY. AchievementsYour achievements are what market you on your resume. When you mix your job duties with your achievements, you dilute the effectiveness of your achievements. Ideally, you will have progressively more achievements with more recent jobs. At most, 5 achievements per role. What makes an achievement impactful? -Is specific-Starts with an action verb (parallel structure)-Leads with results-Leaves the reader wanting more (2 lines max) Example #1: Instead of Grew customer base This high-impact achievement bullet: Catapulted customer base 400% and revenue 700% by launching a comprehensive social media campaign. Example #2: Instead of Managed new-hire in-processing This high-impact achievement bullet: Processed 140 new employees in just 30 days including all paperwork, orientation, security clearances, and computer access. Example #3: Instead of Managed IT installation project This high-impact achievement bullet: Spearheaded 1200-unit IT installation project including beta testing, identifying and training superusers, and troubleshooting. How do you know what to include as an achievement? Here are some guidelines: -Choose achievements that, in combination, present you as well-rounded and competent for the role you are applying for. -Focus on achievements that demonstrate the skills you want to use moving forward. If, for example, you're really good at managing budgets but hate them, and they aren't an essential part of the job you're applying for, don't focus an achievement on your budgeting magic. Two more things: With some clients, I will separate out a 1-to-2- line statement about the scope of their work. Doing this makes it easy for the reader to see things such as size of budgets managed, number of direct reports, reporting structure, size of sales territory, etc. Here's an example: Directly supervised 5; total team of 14 | Hired, developed, and managed marketers, vendors, and agencies | $3.8M Marketing budget Finally, I am increasingly beginning each of my clients' bullets with an introductory phrase. This serves two purposes: It allows the reader to quickly scan the resume and determine the “buckets” of achievements this candidate has had, and it further packs the resume with keywords that will increase its score in the ATS. I determine what phrases to use based on two things: The content of the achievement (what is it really about) and the keywords I find in the job descriptions the client gives me. Examples: Stakeholder Advocacy & Education: Developed and managed Regional Advocate Program, which delivered grassroots, legislative, political, and investor development support and resources to Florida Chamber, local chambers of commerce, legislators, candidates, and business advocacy partners across 6 regions of Florida. Efficiency Enhancements: Achieved annual cost reduction of 30%, enhanced financial reporting processes, and increased productivity through strategic technology implementations including dashboarding and cloud solutions. Latinx Community Leadership: Recognized with Hispanic Heritage Foundation Award — for courage and commitment to elevating Latinx culture in all its expressions. I hope you're finding a gentle landing spot in this new year. Longtime blog readers may recall my “weeks in review” turned “months in review” turned "season in review" over the years. Now there's an annual Year in Review. This reflection exercise allows me to stay accountable, set and review goals, celebrate, and note what needs adjustment. Below is a list of my year's experiences in no particular order. There's also a brief reflection and resources to support us moving into the new year. To compile this information I reviewed my planner, monthly dreams, birthday exercise (here's mine from 2021), goodreads app, ballet class platforms, and photos. Needless to say, it's a process! Consider your own 2023 list. Look for patterns, wins, challenges, boundaries, and those sweet moments in between. Although this year may have been challenging, you may just rediscover some gems when you compile your own Year in Review. Oh, and here's an Instagram reel with heaps of photos from 2023. Hosting the Coterie, trimming my offerings, full psychotherapy practice, a bit of travel, virtual private ballet sessions and group classes, second hip surgery, creating digital courses and the Salon, ate more salads (in wraps), hired amazing support, finalized a new book cover. What Didn't Work for Me in 2023? Lack of mobility for a month after hip surgery, my therapist of nine years retired and booked a one-way ticket to Italy, I lost my signature ring (Tim found it five months later), reading was hard for some reason, challenges managing physical pain, not completing online courses, didn't create as much content as I'd hoped, didn't complete new book draft, exhausted often, excessive vet visits and senior pet needs, brain fog. What Did I Learn About Myself Last Year? I need more rest and simplicity in my life. How Did My Goals for 2023 Unfold? I achieved more than 3/4 of my Year's Dreams list. Released 25 podcasts, created digital courses, had a meaningful 50th birthday, had the band around my femur removed, nurtured the Coterie, streamlined my website (thanks Mara!), gave a proud performance of Les Sylphides, and took trips to Paris. A few that I didn't meet and are still on my radar: read 40 books, solid pirouettes at the barre and in the center, daily greens. My 2024 Year's Dreams: complete and release Advanced Tranquility book, healthy pugs, send monthly love notes (sign up here), new website, increase color on my plate and eat more veggies/whole foods, learn and perform a made-for-me ballet solo to La Vie en Roseat the International Adult Ballet Festival, get back en pointe consistently, nurture my Coterieloves and clients, incorporate more play and relaxation time, create an "Embrace Your Inner Parisienne" micro-course, finish a few e-courses I've signed up for, donate to support orangutans, pigs, and pugs, create AM writing time, create content for you (starting a Substack soon!). Wrap-Up: Overall 2023 was an okay year. Ballet continued to be a dominate presence along with my therapy practice, the Coterie, and pug caregiving. I see this continuing into the new year and hope to make more space to write, cuddle pugs, and read fireside (or by twinkle light). My word/theme for 2024 is attention. What about you? This past July, the 12th International Conference on HIV Science was held in Brisbane, Australia. But this wasn't your typical scientific conference. Yes, findings were presented on the latest in HIV research, but it culminated in a museum exhibition. 12 HIV-positive artists were paired with 12 scientists, and each pair collaborated on a piece of art, largely based on the scientists' research. And one of the pieces attracted a bit more attention than the others. Kairon Liu, an artist, curator, and photographer, and Kane Race, a professor of gender and cultural studies at the University of Sydney, wanted to create something that commented on the negative effects of global HIV policy and the current stigma of living with the disease. The resulting piece is titled Untransmittable, a transparent penis-shaped sculpture filled with thousands of expired antiretroviral pills.Universe of Art host D. Peterschmidt sat down with Liu and Race to talk about the piece they made, why they couldn't take it over the Australian border, and their hopes for future HIV research.Universe of Art is hosted and produced by D. My 2023 Year's Dreams: get memoir proposal to my agent, healthy pugs, host 600th podcast event (save the date: February 20), send two monthly love notes (sign up here), release two monthly podcasts, increase color on my plate and eat more veggies/whole foods (less sugar—my life's struggle), carve out more family time, learn and perform Prelude from Les Sylphides at the International Adult Ballet Festival, celebrate my 50th birthday in a meaningful way, get back onto pointe, nurture my Coterie loves, incorporate more play and relaxation time (ongoing challenge), create a few micro-courses (any requests?), finish a few e-courses I've signed up for, donate to support orangutans, pigs, and pugs, create AM writing time, design spring #balletcore TDJ clothing collection, declutter. A Few of My Favorite Reads: The Idea of You by Robinne Lee, Personality Isn't Permanent by Benjamin Hardy, Free Time by Jenny Blake, Toxic Positivity by Whitney Goodman A Few of My Favorite Shows: White Lotus, Emily in Paris, Fleishman is in Trouble, The Patient A Few of My Favorite Songs: All things Harry Styles especially Falling and Sign of the Times Overall 2022 was a solid year. Ballet continued to be a dominate presence as did my therapy practice, the Coterie, and pug caregiving. I see this continuing into the new year and hope to make more space to write in my journal, create content for you, sip tea with friends, cuddle pugs, and read fireside {or by candlelight}. I'm still finalizing my word/theme for 2023 and feel it bubbling up inside. What about you? May 2023 be filled with time and space for what matters most to you! The two concluded that the problem preventing progress is not science, technology or innovation. Instead, they concluded, “It's the mystery of human behavior, why we don't activate our brains and our behaviors at a level that is appropriate to the emergency that's upon us.”Following that conversation, Seth began assembling a team of volunteers, including Robert, to create The Carbon Almanac. The work happened quickly. Three hundred people came together to research, write, edit, fact-check, illustrate, and design the book, delivering production-ready files to Penguin in just five months.“This was not just about doing a book,” Robert says. “It's really about a movement. I suppose we're up to 2500 people in 92 countries—all volunteer.” In addition to the book, the team created a website, a children's book, a teacher's guide, a podcast, a Linkedin learning course, and a photo book with help from Getty Images. With the goal of changing behavior, Robert says the volunteers had a clear objective. “It's really about giving people the facts and the information in a way and in a style and an accessible way so that they can feel they can trust it.”The next step was to make it actionable. “Because many of us who accept that manmade climate change is a real thing are overwhelmed by the enormity of it, it's like, ‘Well, what can I do?'” Robert adds, “The book tries to give you both hope and practical advice on what you can do.”The process of creating the book was unusual, if not unheard of. With hundreds of volunteers working in a network without a formal hierarchy, people found their own ways to contribute. Robert describes it this way:People would simply say, “You know what? I'll volunteer to lead writing the section on X.”One person, a lawyer in San Francisco, realized we needed a production management process. Things have to come in in a certain way, at a certain time. She stepped up to basically be the managing editor. In a way, the sort of egoless, goodwill, sense of common purpose that we modeled in creating all of this.Robert wrote several sections to the Almanac. He says, “The one I find most interesting was a piece on really explaining that where you bank, where your checking and savings accounts are, makes a difference.”He noted that most people in the U.S. bank with one of just four major banks. He learned a lot doing the research for the piece. “These are not the banks for me that espouse a sustainability policy in their investments that I want to support by having my checking and savings there.”He wrote about how to move your banking relationships. He notes that it is straightforward to do technically but says, “It is psychologically so hard!”Once you have moved your banking relationships, he recommends writing to the bank you've left to let them know why. He also suggests you post it on social media so your friends know and can follow your example.“We're more likely to believe things based on who's around us, either virtually or physically in our network, than we are to arrive at those beliefs ourselves,” he says, explaining the power of your public declarations. While writing the book, Robert matured his ability to connect ideas and people as a superpower. How to Develop Connecting People and Ideas As a SuperpowerRobert loves to connect people and ideas. He shared a couple of examples:I spend a fair amount of my time mentoring undergrads at my alma mater. As they get ready to go into the world—and college is the world too—but as they get ready to think about their work life, they are hesitant to ask, “Oh, can you introduce me to someone in some field, this and that?”And I say, “You don't understand. You're thinking I'm viewing it as transactional. It's a great joy.”It's for me, many of my peers and friends and colleagues and this connectivity—I guess I've become good at it, if only because others appreciate it.Another example comes from mentoring startup entrepreneurs:We're going through questions. So it is a financial literacy startup. It is a counter to the sort of trading frenzy approach of a lot of fintech these days. It really requires a different mindset. As they've been thinking about product design and user experience and all, I'm suggesting to them that they look at not just the research but the actual implementations of applications that are in the mindfulness and wellbeing space. Because, what I would say to them is, “You are trying to help people develop a kind of self-regulation, even though they're thinking it's just about investing, it's really about self-regulation for thinking about time frames.”To learn and develop this strength, Robert suggests developing related strengths.First, he says, “I think a prerequisite for it is a kind of enthusiasm for the world and a sense of curiosity that things might lead to unexpected places.”Pair your curiosity with kindness. “I've sort of developed much more of a sense of kindness for people that are struggling in some way or another,” Robert says. “While you can't always do everything for them, that desire to help inevitably leads to other connections.”By following Robert's example and advice, you can develop connecting people and ideas as a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world. Was your mission statement created by yourself, or was it a collaborative effort from your employees? Is it listed on your website homepage? Do your customers know what it is? I'm with Bill Greeno at the 2022 Elite Invitational and he discusses how his team revamped its mission statement into a passion statement. Find out why affirmations were critical in starting the process. Bill Greeno, https://www.qualityautomotiveservicing.com/?fbclid=IwAR2WYxjEIioybHY_EiE30Z7Co2-5LJYQLVOb8bcdvSlL3npxbT_1Rlzn0J0 (Quality Automotive Servicing), Truckee, CA. Bill's previous episodes https://remarkableresults.biz/?s=greeno (HERE) Key Talking Points Renamed, rebranded, and changed the mission statement Dropped “Smog” from the name to add “Servicing” as an actionable word. Customers thought it was just a smog shop. “A mission statement doesn't work if you don't talk to your people” you need meetings to establish expectations, discuss desires and direction, etc Meetings- setting expectations to arrive at a place to write the new mission statement together. Bill brought in another business coach to start. He explained the power of affirmations. The mind doesn't know the difference between what is and what could be. What do you want to be? Are you affirming what you want to be every day? Every Friday after the meeting, they broke into pairs and wrote affirmation for themselves, and shared it with their partner. Their partner repeated it and wrote it down. Then the team would write words that defined them as a company and on their own, write 6 different mission statements. Collaborated together to create 1 mission statement, which became their ‘passion statement.' “Whatcha know good?” Tell me the good news “We go beyond the obvious to educate customers with full disclosure and transparency. The crypto winter has pitched the giddy excitement over the endless possibilities of Web3. The drumbeat of negativity hasn't shaken Time president Keith Grossman's confidence in Web3 providing a new path to sustainable business models. Time, now under the ownership of billionaires Marc and Linda Benioff, has become the most aggressive large publishing brand in exploring the possibilities of Web3.
