This is the first conversation (with Eric Weinstein) in 40 years on Geometric Unity. In this rare, unscripted conversation, Eric Weinstein reveals the core of Geometric Unity, his decades-in-the-making theory. For the first time, Weinstein opens up fully about dark matter, the missing generations, peer review, and the potential flake of GU that quietly changed the world. This is the theory he believes is the answer. As a listener of TOE you can get a special 20% off discount to The Economist and all it has to offer! I've been working on this project assiduously and secretly since last year. It's been several months in the making, with several rewrites and several re-edits. It's finally ready to be released, thus shadow dropping it now. It's a 3-hour iceberg on Eric Weinstein's Geometric Unity. I work on understanding and explaining different Theories of Everything for a living, and this one is unlike any other you've seen. This iceberg covers the graduate-level math, but it also constantly provides explainers aimed at different levels for those who are uninitiated with physics and differential geometry. Enjoy. Eric Weinstein is a mathematician, economist, science policy expert and a frequent public speaker on a variety of subjects within the sciences. Dr Weinstein was formerly a co-founder of the Sloan Sponsored Science and Engineering Workforce Project at Harvard and the National Bureau of Economic Research, a co-founder and principal of the Natron Group in Manhattan as well as a visiting research fellow at Oxford University in the Mathematical Institute. Since completing a PhD dissertation in the Mathematics Department at Harvard in 1992, he has held research positions in Mathematics, Physics, and Economics departments (at MIT, Hebrew University, and Harvard respectively). He delivered the Special Simonyi Lectures at Oxford University in 2013 putting forth a theory he termed “Geometric Unity” to unify the twin geometries (Riemannian and Ehresmannian) thought to ground the two most fundamental physical theories (General Relativity and the so-called Standard Model of particle theory, respectively). He has been asked to address the National Academy of Sciences on five occasions on the future of scientific and academic research at elite institutions within the United States.

Richard Easther is a scientist, teacher, and communicator. He has been a Professor of Physics at the University of Auckland for over the last 10 years and was previously a professor of physics at Yale University. As a scientist, Richard covers ground that crosses particle physics, cosmology, astrophysics and astronomy, and in particular, focuses on the physics of the very early universe and the ways in which the universe changes between the Big Bang and the present day. In this episode, Richard and I discuss the details of cosmology at large, both technically and historically. We dive into Einstein's equations from general relativity and see what implications they have for an expanding universe alongside a discussion of the cast of characters involved in 20th century cosmology (Einstein, Hubble, Friedmann, Lemaitre, and others). We also discuss inflation, gravitational waves, the story behind Brian Keating's book Losing the Nobel Prize, and the current state of experiments and cosmology as a field.   Originally published on May 3, 2022 on YouTube:  https://youtu.be/DiXyZgukRmE Timestamps: 00:00:00 : Introduction 00:02:42 : Astronomy must have been one of the earliest sciences 00:03:57 : Eric Weinstein and Geometric Unity 00:13:47 : Outline of podcast 00:15:10 : Brian Keating, Losing the Nobel Prize, Geometric Unity 00:16:38 : Big Bang and General Relativity 00:21:07 : Einstein's equations 00:26:27 : Einstein and Hilbert 00:27:47 : Schwarzschild solution (typo in video) 00:33:07 : Hubble 00:35:54 : One galaxy versus infinitely many 00:36:16 : Olbers' paradox 00:39:55 : Friedmann and FRLW metric 00:41:53 : Friedmann metric was audacious? 00:46:05 : Friedmann equation 00:48:36 : How to start a fight in physics: West coast vs East coast metric and sign conventions. 00:50:05 : Flat vs spherical vs hyperbolic space 00:51:40 : Stress energy tensor terms 00:54:15 : Conversation laws and stress energy tensor 00:58:28 : Acceleration of the universe 01:05:12 : Derivation of a(t) ~ t^2/3 from preceding computations 01:05:37 : a = 0 is the Big Bang. If you haven't heard of the Weinstein's before, then we suggest you run away before we drag you down into a rabbit hole filled with acronyms, anti-vaxxers, and theories of ... everything? anything? literally anything at all? Topics we touch: - We take your twitter questions! - Filos with a weird one: (https://twitter.com/iamFilos/status/1424025239370047488) I have a weird one that could be fun. It seems to me that the idea that we could upload our minds to a computer is nonsense. I agree with Kastrup that what we would upload is a description of our minds and a description of something is not that something. And it seems this desire to immortality is the nerd's reinvention of God via AGI, and heaven via uploading a mind to a silicon substrate. Where do you fall in this mind uploading fantasy? possible? Religious impulse? Reasonable? - Dan would like us to talk about: (https://twitter.com/danieljhageman/status/1424008345309126660) The pervasive skepticism that seems to run through much the Popperian and Crit Rat communities regarding nonhuman animals' capacity to suffer, particularly factory farmed animals. - Karl is interested in: (https://twitter.com/krlwlzn/status/1424025137481912330) I'm interested in the meta-question of why that issue seems to split the community in two. Why hasn't one view become the dogmatic truth yet as it seems to have in most other communities? - WTF is up with Bret and Eric Weinstein - The allure of reflexive contrarianism - The (horrible! awful! stop it!) tendency of academics to use convoluted language to impress their non-peers - The notion of "secular gurus" and what distinguishes a secular guru from a person with a large platform - And the special responsibility of researchers to communicate clearly. References: Animal Suffering - Bruce Nielson's blog post (https://fourstrands.org/2021/04/15/do-animals-experience-qualia/) on whether animals experience qualia, and his second (https://fourstrands.org/2021/06/08/the-current-science-of-animal-emotions/) on animal emotions. Quotes: Every intellectual has a very special responsibility. He has the privilege and the opportunity of studying. In return, he owes it to his fellow men (or 'to society') to represent the results of his study as simply, clearly and modestly as he can. The worst thing that intellectuals can do - the cardinal sin - is to try to set themselves up as great prophets vis-à-vis their fellow men and to impress them with puzzling philosophies. Anyone who cannot speak simply and clearly should say nothing and continue to work until he can do so. Despite promising to leave Weinstein world for an overdue holiday, Matt and Chris have been lured back by a world shattering theory with a cosmic vision of ultimate unity! We are speaking, of course, about Eric Weinstein's revolutionary theory of everything: 'Geometric Unity'. To help uncover the mysteries embedded deep within this scientific Rosetta stone, Matt and Chris are joined by a special guest Tim Nguyen. Tim is a mathematician and the co-author of a recent paper that tried to mathematically construct and critically assess the theory of Geometric Unity as laid out in Eric's content. Eric has not exactly welcomed the critical feedback and has accused Tim and his co-author, Theo, of having nefarious motives and being very bad guys. So we thought it was worth talking to Tim about their real motivations for the paper, their criticisms of Geometric Unity, and whether they are official DISC agents. Join us as we leap one more time into Weinstein world! Notes provided by Tim Response to Geometric Unity https://timothynguyen.files.wordpress.com/2021/02/geometric_unity.pdf (paper) by Timothy Nguyen and Theo Polya and corresponding https://t.co/V5BppvwyPQ?amp=1 (blog post). The paper provides 25 clickable timestamps to Weinstein video segments to let the reader confirm directly the veracity the criticisms.  Clubhouse https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LRjAWstrPc&t=3916s (recording) with Eric evading questions about Geometric Unity and implying his critics are bad actors. Technical notes on Weinstein's limited responses: 1) Weinstein confesses on Joe Rogan Episode #1628 that “one of the criticisms is valid but is something that I would have brought up anyways” (see time near 73:30). Correspondingly, in Section 8.2 of Weinstein's Geometric Unity, he admits that “unfortunately, the author is no longer conversant … and has been unable to locate the notes from decades ago that originally picked out the [Shiab] operator”. The inability to construct the Shiab operator remains a fundamental objection to Geometric Unity. 2) Weinstein says https://youtu.be/0LRjAWstrPc?t=4040 (here), the authors misunderstand GU as being https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiral_gauge_theory (chiral). But the objection is that the theory has a https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiral_anomaly (chiral anomaly), which is not contingent on the theory being chiral. 3) Weinstein suggests https://youtu.be/0LRjAWstrPc?t=4049 (here) (and on Joe Rogan) that there is incorrect inference that he is using supersymmetry in 14 dimensions. The https://youtu.be/N_aN8NnoeO0?t=3992 (interview) referenced in the response paper suggests otherwise, where he explicitly mentions supersymmetry. The “sign flip” discussion Nguyen used to deduce that Weinstein does not understand the Seiberg-Witten equations concerns the issue of obtaining a crucial bound on the spinor field (as discussed in the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seiberg%E2%80%93Witten_invariants (Wikipedia article)) needed to obtain compactness. Having the wrong sign makes the entire theory ill-behaved. Support this podcast

Ibram X. Kendi is a Professor of history, director of the Boston University Center for Antiracist Research, and a research fellow at Harvard University. He is also the author of several best-selling and highly influential books on race in America. It seems like everybody has an opinion of Kendi, and when it comes to the online commentariat, those opinions can get pretty hostile. Even among activists and anti-racists, he seems to spark division, with some grouping Kendi together with other controversial writers like Robin Di Angelo. Kendi is often accused of peddling a pop 'anti-racism' which is at best devoid of substance and at worst toying with totalitalitarianism. With his infamous proposal for a 'Department of Antiracism' that would have power over all aspects of governance, and recent illustrated children's book titled 'Anti-racist Baby', these criticisms are perhaps understandable. But what about the man himself, who in his lectures and interviews, comes across as something of a calm and reasonable voice amongst the culture war maelstrom? In this episode, Matt and Chris, until now famed for being not racist (honestly), courageously hurl themselves onto the pyre of American racial politics. Will they reveal their total lack of understanding of critical race theory and are they racist or anti-racist according to Kendi? Listen and find out. New Yorker writer and book author Andrew Marantz and Eric became friends shortly before the 2016 election when Andrew set off to write the first profile of Eric and Geometric Unity, his theory of Physics. Coming from similar ethnic and politically progressive backgrounds they found plenty of common cause. With the rise of Trump, they then found themselves in subtly different places with Andrew more directly concerned with the rise of the Alt-right and Eric convinced that the Alt-right was likely a response to the transformation of the Democratic Party begun under Bill Clinton into a serious threat to National unity.  In this conversation from November of 2019 in New York City, they discuss Andrew's theories of the rise of the alt-right and internet trolling as well as the research from his 2019 book Antisocial:  Online Extremists, Techno-Utopians, and the Hijacking of the American Conversation. They also explore the contradictions between traditional and woke versions of progressivism and where all of this may be leading the republic. Particularly interesting given the 2019 time of this conversation is the concern with civil unrest and revolution which was shortly to play out in the American street a few months later.   Thanks To Our Sponsors Pitney Bowes: FREE 30-day trial PLUS a FREE 10-pound scale - pb.com/PORTAL Skillshare: 2 free months of Premium Membership at Skillshare.com/PORTAL Theragun: Try Theragun RISK-FREE for THIRTY-DAYS - Theragun.com/PORTAL Wine Access: Get $20 off your first purchase of $50 or more - Wineaccess.com/PORTAL See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
