At the height of the pandemic, COVID-19 was talked about as “the great equalizer,” an idea touted by celebrities and politicians from Madonna to then-New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. But that was a myth. Ibram X. Kendi and Boston University's Center for Antiracist Research worked with The COVID Tracking Project to compile national numbers on how COVID-19 affected people of color in the U.S. Their effort, The COVID Racial Data Tracker, showed that people of color died from the disease at around twice the rate of White people. The COVID Tracking Project's volunteer data collection team waited months for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to release COVID-19 testing data. But when the CDC finally started publishing the data, it was different from what states were publishing—in some instances, it was off by hundreds of thousands of tests. With no clear answers about why, The COVID Tracking Project's quest to keep national data flowing every day continued until March 2021. This week on Reveal: We examine the myth of COVID-19 as “the great equalizer,” what went wrong in the CDC's response to the pandemic, and whether it's prepared for the next one. This Peabody Award-nominated three-part series is hosted by epidemiologist Jessica Malaty Rivera and reported by Artis Curiskis and Kara Oehler from The COVID Tracking Project at The Atlantic. Two significant academic scandals from the past year underscore why the new book Critical Dilemma, written by Drs. Neil Shenvi and Pat Sawyer, is so timely and important. In my view, this book offers the definitive critique of critical theory from a Christian worldview. You can receive a copy for a gift to the Colson Center this month. (Just go to colsoncenter.org/October).  Eric Stewart, a former professor in the highly rated criminology department at Florida State University, is the principal author of a paper that concluded that, as Black and Latino populations increased, so did the public's demand for more discriminatory sentencing. After the paper was published, his co-author Justin Pickett, a professor at the University of Albany, noticed problems with the data:   "Pickett found that their sample size somehow had increased from 500 to over 1,000 respondents, the counties polled had decreased from 326 to 91, and the data was altered to the point of mathematical impossibility."  When Pickett approached Stewart with his concerns, he replied with evasive answers and would not share the complete data set. In Pickett's analysis of the data from the first set of 500, the results did not support the conclusion that an increasing Black or Latino population is linked to more severe sentencing. If anything, the initial results pointed to the opposite conclusion. Also in the original survey, unanswered questions left blank had been filled in with “imputed values,” presumably by Stewart.  Both the journal that originally published the paper and Florida State University were reluctant to retract the paper or to take action against Stewart. However, the university's hand was forced by the discovery of five other papers by Stewart that were also based on falsified data. Once that came to light, Stewart abruptly left his $190,000 position at the university.  Perhaps Professor Stewart faked data for grants or due to the pressure to publish. Perhaps he was convinced his theories were correct and too important to be proven wrong. Whatever the case, the data was falsified in support of ideas central to Critical Race Theory, and the consequences were more than merely academic. It's hard not to believe that his studies have been used to shape policy when he's garnered over $3.5 million in grant funding from taxpayer-funded organizations.   The more recent scandal involves Ibram X. Kendi's Center for Antiracist Research at Boston University. Kendi authored How to Be an Antiracist, a book that shot to the top of The New York Times bestseller list and remained there for nearly a year. Boston University launched a center dedicated to Kendi's ideas and hired him to head it. By the end of 2021, the center had collected over $45 million in funding.  Despite that funding, the center recently laid off about half its staff due to significant budgetary problems. A few initiatives had been launched, but the center produced minimal research. Staffers accused the center of a dysfunctional work environment and mismanagement.  Unlike the leaders of the Black Lives Matter organization, Kendi has not been accused of misappropriating donations, though he commands extraordinarily high speaking fees. This seems to be a case of an academic superstar put in charge of a center, who lays out ambitious goals, but is not competent to run it.  Clearly, Kendi wasn't properly vetted by the university or by donors. The corporations that donated clearly ignored an argument central to Kendi's antiracism, that capitalism is oppressive and should be dismantled.   Each incident underscores both the pervasive influence of Critical Theory on academic culture and its flaws as a theory. Like all ideas, Critical Theory and its offshoots (Critical Race Theory, intersectionality, Queer Theory, and others) have consequences. Like all bad ideas, it has victims.   For the sake of truth and out of love for our neighbors, Christians must be prepared to push back against these bad ideas. This requires understanding these ideas and responding to them with competence and grace for the people who hold them.   Critical Dilemma: The Rise of Critical Theories and Social Justice Ideology is such a crucial resource right now. Authors Shenvi and Sawyer take seriously the worldview behind various versions of Critical Theory, identify each version's central ideas, and define key terms such as “intersectionality,” “antiracism,” “privilege,” “wokeness,” “heteronormativity,” and others. They trace the history of these ideas and offer a thorough response from a Christian worldview. As our way of saying thank you for a gift to the Colson Center this month, you can receive a copy of Critical Dilemma by Drs. Neil Shenvi and Pat Sawyer. To request a copy, go to colsoncenter.org/October.  This Breakpoint was co-authored by Dr. Glenn Sunshine. For more resources to live like a Christian in this cultural moment, go to breakpoint.org.

Menendez' home—some of which contained fingerprints or DNA of Fred Daibes, a real estate developer also accused of bribing Menendez and his wife Nadine. According to The New York Times, Daibes pled guilty to financial crimes in 2022. Senator Menendez and his wife have both denied the criminal conduct alleged by prosecutors. Will this indictment impact Sen. Menendez' intention to run for reelection in 2024? 3:45pm- Despite an inability to prevent illegal migration along the U.S. Southern border, the Biden Administration has announced it will grant “legal status” to 470,000 Venezuelans who entered the U.S. unlawfully. Ageism, according to the World Health Organization, refers to how we think, feel and act towards others or ourselves based on age. It affects people of all ages and exists in our institutions, our relationships and ourselves. Many of us have experienced the effects of Ageism when it comes to older adults in the workplace, in hospitals, in public, in nursing homes, and in both the media and the entertainment industries.  Kyrié Carpenter was trained as a therapist and works as a facilitator and public speaker, specializing in ageism and dementia. She is the editor of the Changing Aging blog, author of Healing Dementia, and is adjunct faculty at USI and Pacifica Graduate Institute, Ryan Backer is an age activist, public speaker and self-proclaimed old person in training. Ryan was a fellow with Boston University's Center for Antiracist Research's Antibigotry Convening. Ryan does care work, organizes interage events and groups, writes zines, and sits on the board of two community-based nonprofits .Ryan has an undergraduate degree in Gerontology with a minor in Black Studies from York College, City University of New York. Old School curates, creates, commissions and disseminates free resources to educate people about ageism and how to end it; hosts and facilitates spaces where age advocates around the world can connect; collaborates with other pro-aging organizations; and shows up for other social-justice movements. Old School is working towards a world where everyone has the opportunity to live long and to live well. We are advancing the movement to dismantle ageism, and we are leveraging the fact that everyone ages (and experiences age bias) in order to address the intersectional nature of all oppression—and of all activism.

This is the third episode in our three-part series taking listeners inside the failed federal response to COVID-19. Series host Jessica Malaty Rivera and reporters Artis Curiskis and Kara Oehler bring us the conclusion of The COVID Tracking Project story and an interview with the current CDC director, Dr. Rochelle Walensky.  We look at the myth that COVID-19 was “the great equalizer,” an idea touted by celebrities and politicians from Madonna to then-New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. The COVID Tracking Project's volunteer data collection team waited months for the CDC to release COVID-19 testing data. But when the CDC finally started publishing the data, it was different from what states were publishing – in some instances, it was off by hundreds of thousands of tests. With no clear answers about why, The COVID Tracking Project's quest to keep national data flowing every day continued until March 2021.  Lastly, Rivera talks with the director of the CDC, Walensky, to try to understand what went wrong in the agency's response to the pandemic and ask whether it's prepared for the next one. One of the things I've come to believe during the now 10-year journey of Good Life Project is that there truly is no individual good life, without there also being a more collective and inclusive path for a societal good life. We are all interconnected. And a key part of this more expansive aspiration is about planting seeds, starting with younger generations. So, how do you raise kids to create a more equitable and inclusive society? One where we're not afraid to acknowledge and discuss beautiful experiences, while also addressing hard truths in a way that steeps us in reality, invites everyone into the conversation, and compels us to do the work needed to create more possibility, equality and opportunity for all, regardless of race, socio-economic status, religion, age, ability and beyond? That's where we're headed with today's guest, Dr. Ibram X. Imposing medical things while not knowing what's in the contract….. and more on today's CrossPolitic Daily Newsbrief. I'm Toby Sumpter and today is Tuesday, November 2, 2021. Happy Election Day -- make sure you get out and vote. And many apologies for a dead week of daily news briefs -- we were out of town recording other things that we will be sharing with you soon! Ibram X. Kendi was in the news over the weekend after tweeting a link to an article and then deleting it. The article was from The Hill describing how college applicants often lie about their race, pretending to be non-white in order to gain entrance into colleges.  The now-deleted tweet said: “More than a third of White students lied about their race on college applications, and about half of these applicants lied about being Native American. More than three-fourths of these students who lied about their race were accepted.” Why the backlash? Well, opponents of Kendi's anti-racism philosophy pointed out that the tweet and article didn't really support the narrative that American is a hotbed of systemic racism, if, well, everyone is clambering to identify as the supposedly subjugated races. Kendi is often cited as a leading proponent of Critical Race Theory.  Who is this Ibram X. Kendi? Dr. Kendi is the Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the Humanities and the Founding Director of the Boston University Center for Antiracist Research. He is the host Be Antiracist with Ibram X. Kendi, a new podcast. In 2020, Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world. He's the author of the book “How to be Antir-Racist.” His next book, How To Raise An Antiracist, will be published on June 14, 2022 and is available now for pre-order. But what's really interesting is that Dr. Kendi apparently recently said he was quite horrified about his daughter coming home saying she wants to be a boy: Dr. Ibram X. Kendi Says His Daughter Wanting to be a Boy is “Horrifying” Now of course Dr. Kendi is right: this is horrifying. And Kendi is at least somewhat consistent in seeming to be against people pretending to be what they are not. But what he doesn't seem to understand is why what he is doing is actually encouraging people to desire to become what they are not. He's feeding discontent when he propigates the notion that everything is a power struggle between races. “What affirmative messages can we be teaching her about being a girl that can protect her from the messages she is hearing in our home or even outside our home?” I'm glad he's asking the question, and I hope he considers Critical Race Theory is part of the problem. Of course he's exactly right. His daughter needs to be taught that being created in the image of God as female is glorious. But the question is: can Kendi say the same thing about a young white boy who has started to suspect that he won't be able to get into college because of the color of his skin?  Werkz:  It is said that “Carrying a gun is not supposed to be comfortable, it's supposed to be comforting.” Shan and his team at Werkz believe a holster should be pleasant, concealable, and accessible. Werkz's light-bearing holsters are designed to work with a range of different attachments so you can find the optimal carry style that suits you. Use their holster finder at Werkz.com/CrossPolitic so you can carry comfortably and be prepared to defend yourself day and night. Colonel Jeff Cooper, “Carrying a gun is not supposed to be comfortable, it's supposed to be comforting.” Kyle Rittenhouse trial starts Mon, Nov 1. He is on trial for homicide, attempted homicide, and possession of a dangerous weapon under 18 after shooting 3 and killing 2 in the Kenosha, WI riots. CNN pays tribute to the rioters Rittenhouse shot: https://www.cnn.com/2021/11/01/us/kyle-rittenhouse-shooting-victims-trial/index.html This is going to be a big trial for 2nd amendment and self-defense going forward. Elections Today! Happy Election day -- have you voted yet? I know this is an off year for national elections, but there are many state and local elections that are very important. We do not put our trust in princes, and we certainly do not put our trust in ballots or ballot boxes. But to the extent that we can have a say in the public square, I would encourage you to get out, get educated, and vote. Off years can be especially important since many people do not realize there are even elections happening. Numbers tend to be a lot smaller, and therefore your vote matters that much more. CWWI: Did you know that more than 75% of those raised in evangelical, Presbyterian, and Reformed churches don't pursue any kind of Christian higher education? Surprising isn't it.
