Send us a textRev. Martin Luther King Jr. once said that "Riots are the language of the unheard" and in April of 1992, the black community in Los Angeles felt very unheard. The Previous year in 1991, 25 year old Rodney Glen King had been involved in a high speed chase. Noticing the spot light from a helicopter, Rodney realized that things had quickly gotten out of hand and, ended up pulling off Interstate 201, onto the right hand shoulder of Foothill Blvd. What followed was caught on video, by a nearby resident named George Holliday..... and the world would see one of the most horrific beatings, that did not result in death. By some miracle, Rodney was not killed, but doctors would say that some of his bones had been so pulverized that the looked like grains of sand...13 days after this, a 15 year old black girl named Latasha Harlins, at the request of her grandmother, had gone into a corner store to pick up some orange juice for her and her siblings, Latasha walked walked to the front counter with $2 in hand to pay for the 1.79 orange juice, again, this interaction was caught on film, the store owner seemed to have believed Latasha was going to steal the juice, despite the cash in her hand, after a short but intense interaction with the store owner, Latasha tried to walk away. The store owner would pull out her gun, and end the life of a 15 year old child. When Latasha's killer got off, with community service and a fine, the black community was horrified, and when the 4 officers who beat Rodney, nearly to death, were acquitted, they had had enough, and with in minutes the riots would begin. They would last for 6 days, leaving some neighbourhood, reduced to rubble. This is the case of the 1992 LA Riots.Support the showIf you're interested in receiving bonus episodes, early release dates, an everything scary sticker and ‘thank you' as well as a shout out on our regular feed! The girlies investigate our modern-day digital panopticon through an exploration on the history of surveillance in the US. From wiretapping to Watergate to hidden AirBnb spyware, Americans have been accustomed to and unsettled by being watched for decades. Digressions include the 2016 vibes and a pig named Heidi Klum. This episode was produced by Julia Hava and Eliza Mclamb and edited by Allison Hagan. Research assistance from Penelope Spurr. NOTE: This episode mentions the role of surveillance in cases of police brutality. March 3rd 1991: George Holliday and his wife were awoken by sirens and a helicopter flying low over his apartment complex. The plumber and amateur videographer reached for his brand new Sony Camcorder, went out to the balcony and hit record. What he didn't realize was he was about to capture what was arguably the first viral video of our time. About 90 feet away, four white LAPD officers were beating a black man named Rodney King, stopped after a high-speed pursuit.  At home, his 7 year old daughter Lora saw the brutal beating on television – with no clue it was her own father. Now 38 years old, Kim talks with Lora King about her childhood experience and the work she'd doing in her father's name.  Follow and support Lora's work at RodneyKing.org To continue the conversation, follow Kim on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.  Sponsor:  Isn't it time to treat yourself? Released in November 12, 1991 Tupac Amaru Shakur introduces the world to his debut album 2Pacalyse Now. Tupac throughout this album provided social commentary on racism, police brutality, teen pregnancy and urban crime. In the aftermath of Rodney King a victim of police brutality by the Los Angeles Police Department. On this day of March 3, 1991 a few months before 2 Pac debut album was set for release. Rodney King was beaten by LAPD officers after incident of a high-speed chase during the encounter for his arrest while amateur cameraman George Holliday caught it all on videotape. Moreover the four Officer were indicted on charges of excessive use of force by a officer in addition to assault with a deadly weapon. After a three month trail by a majority white jury acquitted the four officers of all charges. This ignited the residents of Los Angeles, California areas inflaming racial tensions which lead to the violent 1992 riots. Fast forward to 2020 with the emergence of Donald Trump Presidency mixed xenophobia, bigotry and unorthodox style of governor fair or unfair. The narrative “Make America Great”again evokes fear to minority populous of Jim Crow times. Furthermore with recent deaths of Nipsey Hussle, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and Rayshard Brooks. Tupac first single off 2PACALYPSE Now embodies police brutality and black on black crime narrative. The titled song Trapped dissects urban allegory discribing the anxiety of a young black male in America. Thus obstacles paved by systemic racism accompanied with government oppression, along with self mental oppression brought forth by environment of urban decay. In conclusion this podcast narrates the anxiety, fear, pain and PTSD of the lyricisms of Tupac Shakur & Ray Luv world. Ayzues breakdown the lyrics and provides social commentary to link and provide examples to the lyrics. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Rodney Glen King (April 2, 1965 – June 17, 2012) was a construction worker turned writer and activist after surviving an act of police brutality by the Los Angeles Police Department. On March 3, 1991, King was violently beaten by LAPD officers during his arrest for fleeing and evading on California State Route 210. A civilian, George Holliday, filmed the incident from his nearby balcony and sent the footage to local news station KTLA. The footage clearly showed King being beaten repeatedly, and the incident was covered by news media around the world. Our theme song was written and performed by Anna Bosnick. Remember the best moments of the summer with Hipstercast 03. What is worth noting the most in 03 podcast? Ohh so hot and all the hits in one set! This Classic 80's Mustang of the remix by Jeremy Glenn Reorder. Fantastically beautiful remix from Giom in track Never Gonna Grosh of George Holliday. The new VA of Hot Creations nice track of Freaks. Mexa label always pleases best releases such as from Moonwalk. It is worth noting chill-out track is number 1 in the charts on Beatport from Novika in a remix of Satin Yatskets. You will enjoy the same great release with a synthesizer from the 70's Flamingo Tree remix of FM Attack. Lovely hits as from: Saint Lou Lou, Casio Social Сlub, DJ Kaos, Munch, Tough Love's, Satin Jackets, Nils Nuernberg, Florian Kruse, Stee Downes, Kruse & Nuernberg and Spirit Catcher.
