Public Enemy said it plainly: “Make America great again the middle just love it, when he wanna talk, walk y'all straight to them ovens.”  That line is not just a warning about Trump. It is an indictment of the political middle itself. The middle loves order more than justice, comfort more than truth, and decorum more than human dignity. That is why Democrats keep losing the moral and political plot. They spend billions chasing the approval of people who are permanently uncomfortable with real change, while Black people, the backbone of the party, are asked yet again to save a democracy that still refuses to represent us fully.  We are good enough to rescue the system, but never important enough for the system to center. Public Enemy understood that fascism does not move forward on the will of the strong alone. It moves because the middle enjoys the feeling of safety that cruelty gives them. They may not light the fire, but they will stand in its warmth. All the indices seem to point to the fact that America is in decline instead of becoming great again. China is currently the strongest nation economically, not America. America is slipping because of the character of the nation. The lack of character is affecting our economy, our culture, and our society. If America will be great again, what needs to happen to us? In this episode, I talk with Agustina Vergara Cid, an immigration policy expert, to break down the complex issue of birthright citizenship and President Trump's day-one executive order attempting to alter it. We discuss the history and legal foundation of birthright citizenship, tracing its roots to the 14th Amendment and the 1898 Supreme Court case, Wong Kim Ark, which affirmed that anyone born on U.S. soil (except for children of diplomats) is an American citizen. Agustina explains how Trump's executive order aims to deny citizenship to children of non-citizen visa holders and undocumented immigrants—something she believes is a direct constitutional challenge. We explore the motivation behind the order, the likelihood of it surviving court scrutiny, and how immigration laws in Europe and the U.S. differ, particularly in how they impact assimilation. Donald J. Trump is the 45th President of the United States and is now running for a second term. In June 2015, Trump announced his candidacy for the 2016 presidential election as a Republican. Unlike the politicians before him, President Trump had a unique style and message that energized the American public. His appeal to many Americans stemmed from his status as a political outsider and his portrayal as a break from traditional career politicians. During and after his presidency, Trump faced significant opposition and controversy from the establishment, including two impeachments by the House of Representatives—first in 2019 over abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, and again in 2021 over incitement of insurrection related to the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021. He was acquitted by the Senate in both cases. Most recently, there was an attempt on his life when a gunman opened fire during a rally in Pennsylvania, wounding the President and two spectators, and killing one supporter. Today, President Trump is running on a platform dedicated to strong border and immigration policies, lowering taxes and inflation, achieving energy independence, and ending the weaponization of the media and government agencies.
