Holy Kryptonian catastrophe, comic crusaders! This week on Play Comics, we're diving headfirst into the digital dumpster fire that is Superman: Countdown to Apokolips for the Game Boy Advance – because apparently someone thought the best way to honor Superman: The Animated Series was to trap the Man of Steel in a tiny screen prison with graphics that make MS Paint look like the Sistine Chapel. Released in 2003 by the brave souls at Mistic Software (after poor Crawfish Interactive literally died during development – talk about your occupational hazards!), this isometric adventure promised to let players soar through Metropolis while battling Livewire, Metallo, and the fashion disaster known as Kalibak. What it actually delivered was a gaming experience so punishing that even Darkseid would file a complaint with customer service. Joining us for this digital descent into madness is Adam Maresh from my local shop back when he lived by me – a man who's seen more comic-to-game adaptations crash and burn than a rejected Justice League movie pitch. Together, we'll explore how this GBA “gem” managed to score a whopping 45% on GameRankings and somehow convinced IGN to give it a 4.5/10 (which in retrospect feels generous). So grab your emergency kryptonite antidote and prepare for an episode that's more fun than actually playing the game – which, let's face it, isn't exactly setting the bar stratospheric. Will Superman's portable adventure redeem itself through sheer nostalgic charm, or will it crash harder than a Daily Planet exclusive? Super June continues as Tread Perilously takes a look at "The Case of the Talkative Dummy," the third episode of the 1950s Adventures of Superman series. When Clark and Lois take Jimmy to a vaudeville show for his birthday, the ventriloquist act is foiled by someone offstage throwing their voice. Jimmy and Lois later realize the heckling was part of an elaborate scheme to heist armored cars around Metropolis. But who is throwing their voice? And are they part of an inside job at the security company? Clark convinces Inspector Henderson to give him time to put all the pieces together, but when Jimmy gets locked in a safe by the real criminal, it becomes a job for Superman. Erik and Justin get lost discussing 1940s and 50s dietary habits. They also doubt the mild-mannered quality of George Reeves' Clark Kent. Erik tries to remember his post-Golden Age Superman lore and mostly fails. Justin ends up taken with first season Lois Lane actor Phyllis Coates. Erik re-imagines Superman and Loki as Tommy Wiseau. Jack Larson's oddly old, but boyish take on Jimmy Olsen leads to a lot of unfortunate implications. Justin presumes the Talkative Dummy would be something supernatural and the International Brotherhood of Goons, Lackeys, and Gofers makes its debut.

Mort Weisinger was the editor, and the cover was pencilled by Curt Swan, inked by George Klein and lettered by Ira Schnapp.After reading an e-mail and comment from last week's episode, the stories covered were:- (8:39) CASE OF THE FUNNY PAPER CRIMES (13 pgs.), written by Jerry Siegel. According to Mike's Amazing World Of DC Comics, the story was pencilled by John Sikela and inked by Ed Dobrotka, while the Grand Comic Book Database Ed Dobrotka was the penciller and John Sikela was the inker. This story was originally published as the first of four stories that appeared in SUPERMAN 19, November/December 1942, released on September 4, 1942. It contained 64 pages for the cover price of a dime. This story was also reprinted in SUPERMAN FROM THE 30'S TO THE 70'S, SUPERMAN ARCHIVE vol. V and SUPERMAN CHRONICLES vol. NOTE: When originally published, the Fifth Dimensional Imp's name was spelled Mr. Mxyztplk, but was changed to the then current spelling when reprinted in this issue.
