In this episode Chris brings us Opinion Scholarship on the Creation myths of ancient Greece. We begin with an exploration of so-called "Old Europe" and a cavalcade of archeological evidence of the Great Mother Goddess religion that prevailed in the Stone Age. From there we follow Author--Robert Graves--as he reconstructs from ancient sources the oldest Creation myths of Greece; following the symbolic breadcrumbs which connect Zeus and the Olympians with the Great Mother Goddess who came before them. This takes us from Homer and the Orphics to the Bible, into Zoroastrianism and Ancient Egyptian myth, then we trip over Homer, Hesiod and Apollodorus and fall squarely into the Aryan migration theory (which we navigate tactfully). And before all is said and done, we pepper in a dash of depth psychology. Enjoy ;)

I am so excited to say that my guest on the GWA Podcast is one of the most pioneering and revelatory artists alive, Judy Chicago. Born Judith Sylvia Cohen, then Judy Gerowitz, but changed it to Judy Chicago to renounce the name of her first husband to instead adopt the name of her birth city instead, Chicago has been at the forefront of art since the 1960s. Following her studies at UCLA in the 1950s, Chicago attended auto body school, as the only woman out of 250 men. It was here that she learnt to use spray guns, but instead of actually painting cars, she used these skills to formulate vaginal forms onto carhoods, as if to poke fun at her male contemporaries. In the 1960s, she turned to Minimalism, creating block-like sculptures which she executed in exuberant colours. While her work was acclaimed, she was one of only three women (out of 51 artists) included in the landmark Jewish Museum exhibition, Primary Structures, in 1966. During this decade, she became increasingly aware of the lack of women artists available to her – as an undergraduate at UCLA in the late 1950s and 60s, she had taken a class titled the Intellectual History of Europe, where her professor declared that women had made zero contributions to European History – so she set herself the task of looking for it herself. As she has said “there was actually a huge amount of information if one looked for it, especially dating back to the 19th century…” Out of this – and turning to the importance of education – she began the first ever feminist art programme, at Fresno State College, with artist Miriam Schapiro in 1970, which, as feminist art historian, Linda Nochlin has declared, was a time when there were no women's studies, no feminist theory, no African American studies, no queer theory, no postcolonial studies. What there was ... was a seamless web of great art, often called “The Pyramids to Picasso”... extolling great (male, of course) artistic achievement since the very dawn of history'... In the 1970s, Chicago created the famous Dinner Party, worked on between 1974 and 1978: a giant minimalist-like table that awards 39 women from history and mythology a ‘seat at the table' – with the further names of 999 women in the porcelain in the middle. She has created images of birth, death, animals, plants, that deal with an attitude entrenched in feminism towards caring for our planet, and so much more. But! The reason why we are speaking to her today is because this summer in London, Chicago will take over the Serpentine Gallery with an exhibition that corresponds to her major new book: Revelations, a project that has been unrealised for over 30 years, but is finally being published, that includes rewriting the story of creation, spotlighting the Great Mother Goddess, and a plethora of other women, and challenging the patriarchal paradigms that have always dictated how stories have been read, written, and accepted. -- LINKS: https://www.serpentinegalleries.org/whats-on/judy-chicago-revelations/?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwo6GyBhBwEiwAzQTmc3bNjJ0zjNj2RgMuZomrRmjd8Bhuvx6YlLjhkJ8sk0ZYIgxU_IQVmRoCEWoQAvD_BwE https://www.thamesandhudsonusa.com/books/judy-chicago-revelations-hardcover https://judychicago.com/ https://www.newmuseum.org/exhibitions/view/judy-chicago-herstory -- THIS EPISODE IS GENEROUSLY SUPPORTED BY THE LEVETT COLLECTION: https://www.famm.com/en/ https://www.instagram.com/famm.mougins // https://www.merrellpublishers.com/9781858947037 Follow us: Katy Hessel: @thegreatwomenartists / @katy.hessel Sound editing by Nada Smiljanic Music by Ben Wetherfield

This episode explores the powerful archetypal Great Mother Goddess, a figure that spans many cultures, times, and traditions. Focusing on Hekate as one face of this primordial goddess, and others, including Kybele, Demeter, and Kali Ma, discussing how SHE can be a powerful ally for healing our personal mother wound. The mother wound is something that we all carry in different ways, from the consequences of early childhood trauma, to the collective denial of the sacred feminine. Associated with insecure attachment, the consequences of bearing this injury are significant, often infiltrating all aspects of our lives. This painful burden shows up as mistrust, self-denial, lack of purpose, and in many other distressing ways. We live in a time when the goddess is returning, from reclaiming The Madonna to connecting with Hekate, is occurring within many, and in mainstream western culture. This comes after centuries of being diminished due to the ubiquity of rational thought (part of patriarchy). Restoring The Great Mother, whether you call her Hekate or otherwise, includes recognizing diversity and that we are all in need of healing. Finally, heeding the voice of the Great Mother is an invitation to not only personal healing, but to help restore balance to the world. This episode goes well with Chapter 12, Psychopomp, in Entering Hekate's Cave. Mentioned: The Greek Magical Papyri, The Chaldean Oracles, The Goddess and The Alphabet. Keywords: Great Mother Goddess, Hekate, Kybele, Demeter, Moon, Bull, Torch, Dagger, Anima, Animus, Fertility, Dark Goddess, Healing, Mother Wound, Mother Complex, Symbols, Archetype. What if the council of the many gods from Genesis 1&2 were opposed to Yahweh who saw himself as the only authority? What if the serpent in Eden wasn't the evil tempter, but an ally of the Great Mother Goddess? What if there is no sin, but only petty punishment from an authoritatrian war god who demanded blind obedience? --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/magickandthemoon/support

One midrash tradition attributed the universal flood to the polygyny and patriarchy of the ancient world, which was first documented in the Hebrew scriptures with Lemekh's wives, Adah and Zillah (Gen. 4:19). In this episode, Father Jayme transports listeners back in time, to our worship of the Great Mother Goddess of fertility and sustenance for some 35,000 years. The nascent patriarchy of the Agricultural Revolution then marginalized the “hidden” and “absent” women in scriptures. Drawing on the works of Diarmuid Ó Murchú and Marija Gimbutas, Father Jayme notes how new notions of warfare and conquest led to the creation of a new god in human image: the conquering LORD God of hosts! Father Jayme shares: “Like Cain, the Kurgan warrior spirituality conquered, putting other spiritualities to the sword and casting the long shadow of patriarchy over the land.” Thus, the quick transition in Genesis 6 from the “sons of God” dominating the “daughters of humanity,” to God's regret that God had created humankind. Ideas of polygyny persisted, and men in the ancient world felt the right to possess sex-object wives in addition to their childbearing wives. The situation was compounded by societal structures that valued sons over daughters, viewing sons as gain and daughters as loss. Father Jayme concludes that continued sexism and patriarchy, expressed in our domination of others and of Mother Earth, have set in motion forces that may be no less destructive than the universal flood in the days of Naamah & Noach.Have you seen the latest issue of Extraordinary Catholics magazine?Check out other podcasts by and for Inclusive Catholics!Support Extraordinary Catholics podcast!

To see the Mother as she is, in her darkness and light. That is the image of Hekate as Pammetor, The Great Mother Goddess. To know her warm embrace and her firm corrections when we veer from the path. To give us, as John Bowlby, wrote “a secure base from which to explore the world. ” For those of us who were denied this foundational sense of security, the journey can be untethered, as we wonder from one dysfunctional situation to another. The inherent problem, which Bowlby also describes, was that “what one cannot tell to the (m)other, one cannot tell to oneself.” Stretching back across the centuries, we see that others venerated Hekate as The Great Mother. In the earliest reports, such as Hesiod’s Theogony, Hekate is portrayed as all powerful. This distinguishes The Great Mother from earth goddesses, which can be called “Elemental Mothers”, and The Great Mother who is source, soul, and cosmic. She is not Gaia, for example. The Great Mother, to the ancients, was life and death, blessing and bane. Nor is she merely a Goddess of Motherhood, although Hekate has always had a special interest in mothers and children. She was often described as Midwife in ancient texts. In historical sources, Hekate is often interwoven with goddesses, as we learned in the last lesson. These triplicities formulate a Great Mother Goddess by weaving together all aspects of The Mother Archetype. With Artemis and Selene, she becomes the Wise Crone, the experienced Mother, while they represent the earlier phases of The Mother’s Journey. Hekate is also linked to other forms of the Great Mother Goddess, for example her association with Cybele, whom the Romans venerated as Magna Mater (The Great Mother). Go deeper: Learn more about studying with me at keepingherkeys.com She is the darkness. She is the cry of "enough." She is the sigil written in stone. She is the silent walking away of the betrayed. She is the lonely raising arms to the moon. She is the lie told to live the truth. She is the secret circle drawing down her moon. She is the poison that heals. She is the bold stare into the future. She is the blood shed to bring rebirth. She is all those who dare to become. She is the power that is our right. She is The Dark Mother. She has returned. Lesson 4: Ancient Hekate's Many Roles - Keeping Her Keys: An Introduction to Hekate's Modern Witchcraft From the ancient sources, we know that Hekate was a liminal goddess, standing between worlds, particularly at the threshold of life and death. She was described in many diverse ways including Mother of All, Queen, Savior and World Soul. She was viewed as the torch-bearing guide for those on nightmarish Under World journeys. Not only was she viewed as the guide along the road, but also as the way itself. The variety of the titles bestowed upon her by the ancients often appears contradictory. We need to consider two things. One is that the ancient writers held vastly divergent views of Hekate. The other is that Hekate has always been a complex goddess with multiple roles and abilities. Many-named Goddess who brings glory to men, Whose children are fair, Bull-eyed One, Horned One, Nature. All-Mother, who brings forth both Gods and men You roam around Olympus, And traverse the wide and fathomless abyss. You are the Beginning and the End. And you alone are Mistress of All. - The Greek Magical Papyri IV 2785-2890. “We’re witnessing the end of a 5,000 year reign of patriarchy, and are coming into a society created by our technology that will be more balanced and more feminine. It’s already happening. And I think that the good news is that it’s coming just in time.” — Leonard Shlain

We call upon the archetypal Goddess energy of Isis to assist in this transmission to enfold us with her wings and take us to a Temple of Light beyond this time and space. There she transmits light to different aspects of our psyche, our bloodlines, our timelines and to any agenda or energy within our ascending reality that seeks to limit our sovereign freedom . Isis was first an Atlantean High Priestess of the Alta Ra priesthood who ruled the Egyptian colony after the sinking of the Motherland, Atlantis. In time, her memory merged with the archetype of the Great Mother Goddess.

Isis was first an Atlantean High Priestess of the Alta Ra priesthood who ruled the Egyptian colony after the sinking of the Motherland, Atlantis. In time, her memory merged with the archetype of the Great Mother Goddess. This combined archetypal Goddess energy of Isis entered Christianity through the cult of the Virgin Mary that spread throughout the Roman Empire. The Goddess Isis is known as the feminine archetype for creation, motherhood, healing and magic. Herein, we call upon the Great Goddess Isis to create a temple of light in our energy fields. Isis appears as a throne of light and upon that throne we begin the healing and reclaiming process. In this (remastered) transmission, we call upon the Great Goddess Isis to heal our past, clear ‘lower’ energies and to call back fragmented soul light. This transmission works specifically in healing trauma to our most vulnerable aspects, young adult, adolescent, child, and the part of us that spent in the womb of our physical mother.
