Chemical recycling to reduce plastic wasteIt can also decrease carbon dioxide emissions and boost oil productionA recent report called for intensified efforts to tap chemical recycling as a key solution to addressing plastic pollution, considering its potential to dispose of low-value plastic waste that is difficult to recycle. By 2035, the oil output from chemical recycling could potentially be double that of China's largest oil production base, said the report, which was unveiled by the Academy of Macroeconomic Research on Monday, which was World Earth Day. Chemical recycling is one of two major ways to recycle waste plastic. It splits polymer chains and creates products such as oil. The other way is mechanical recycling, which crushes waste to make new plastic products. Mechanical recycling is a good way to recycle engineering plastics, plastic bottles and rigid plastic packages, said Zhang Deyuan, a researcher with the academy. However, it is not economically or technologically viable for recycling flexible plastic packages and plastic films, which account for about 46 percent of the plastic produced in China, he said, adding that incineration and dumping in landfills are currently the main approaches used to dispose of such waste. Citing statistics from the Plastic Recycling Association, an affiliate of the China National Resources Recycling Association, a news release from the academy said about 62 million metric tons of waste plastic was generated across the country last year, with about 19 million tons recycled. It said that placed China at an internationally advanced level in waste plastic recycling. However, like other countries and regions, China also faces the development bottleneck in further increasing the rate," it said. "There is an urgent need to tap chemical recycling." About 43 million tons of waste plastic was incinerated or dumped in landfills in China last year, the academy said. It said China is expected to produce 155 million tons of plastic a year by 2035. If chemical recycling is applied on a large scale, the country will be able to see remarkable drops in plastic waste and emissions of carbon dioxide, and a significant increase in oil production. If 30 percent of the country's plastic waste is chemically recycled in 2035, the country will manage to reduce plastic waste by almost 36 million tons a year, it said. Compared with incineration, chemical recycling can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 22.3 million tons and also save 108 million tons of oil. This is roughly equivalent to building two Daqing oilfields," it said. “这大致相当于建设两个大庆油田。”From 2003 to 2023, the annual oil and gas production at Daqing oilfield, China's largest oilfield, exceeded 40 million tons.2003年至2023年,中国最大油田大庆油田的年油气产量超过4000万吨。The report listed a series of proposals to increase the chemical recycling of plastic waste. It proposed incorporating chemical recycling as a key part of the country's governance system for controlling plastic pollution and guaranteeing energy security, as well as the country's policy and regulation system for managing plastic pollution. It should be made a core solution to tackle plastic pollution, it said. The report also suggested establishing a recycling system that furthers the development of chemical recycling, and rolling out demonstration projects that apply the approach.

What has hiking in common with World Usability Day and Sustainability? In this episode we were joined by Elizabeth Rosenzweig, the founder and director of the World Usability Day. We spoke about how World Usability Day started, why it has a strong relation with Sustainability from the very beginning and what its relation to World Earth Day is. And why hiking? When you go hiking in the wilderness there is one important rule: leave no trace. The question is, how do we design to leave no trace, to cause no more harm? We discussed how UX and design need to change and how some of our design paradigms need to change and how we can bring this topic to the UN. Further we spoke about why collaboration and cooperation is the topic for this years WUD and even more, why it is an important basis for sustainability. We also discussed mental health as part of sustainability, the rough times for the design communities nowadays in terms of layoffs and how we can navigate through. In the end we got down to the core: the problems of capitalism and narratives that are driven by business people only - but also what we could or should do to work towards more balance here. And we came up with an idea for a global joint workshop of World Usability Day Initiative and the SUX Network we might do in the beginning of 2024. Stay tuned. If you want to learn about how World Usability Day started and why it is strongly connected to Sustainability or how we could and should tackle the big challenges nowadays with and in design and why we need to get the UN involved, tune in to this episode of the SUX podcast. A public forum at Melbourne's St Paul's Cathedral entitled "Fighting a Climate Emergency" was held under a huge three dimensional (it is seven metres across) artwork of Gaia created by British artist, Luke Jerram. Ever worsening warnings of trouble for the Shepparton-based Nicholls electorate has reached a new level with the Climate Council declaring the Federal Seat to be the worst in Australia with regard to riverine flooding, adding that even under the least worse scenario, many homes in Shepparton will be uninsurable by 2030. “Even if we electrify everything and switch to renewables and decarbonise - we still need to remove billions of tonnes of carbon from the sky because we have polluted so much.” Ahead of World Earth Day this week, we're really excited to welcome Michelle You, Co-Founder of Songkick and Co-Founder and CEO of Supercritical, to 40 Minute Mentor. You might have heard of the popular concert ticket app Songkick before, which Michelle and her Co-Founders built to one of the most popular apps on the market. After a turbulent time navigating a lawsuit including winning an antitrust settlement from Ticketmaster, Michelle exited to Warner Music and reassessed her purpose and identity outside of Songkick. This journey led her to starting Supercritical - a software enabling businesses to measure, reduce and offset their climate impact in weeks, without the need for a sustainability team. We absolutely loved having Michelle on the podcast and can't wait for you to listen to the incredible mentorship she shares in today's episode, including: How she transitioned from studying Humanities to working in Tech [05:40]Why she started Songkick and how working in the industry has affected her relationship with music [07:56]The key lessons she learned from growing Songkick and the challenges she faced throughout [12:17]How she dealt with the grief and emotional exit from Songkick and how she found her passion to go again with Supercritical [15:17]The mission behind Supercritical and how Michelle and her team work with businesses to tackle the climate crisis [20:06]Michelle's advice on what we can all do to offset our climate impact [31:28]What Supercritical are looking for when hiring talent [33:42]How Michelle managed to build a 50/50 cap table and her advice for anyone looking for more diverse investors [35:07]

The Vatican's Mint issued on October 13 a ten-euro silver coin depicting “Mother Earth” (Pachamama), designed by Luigi Oldani for World Earth Day. This coin COMMEMORATES the first anniversary of the October 2019 Pachamama enthronement in the Vatican. The artist Luigi Oldani described it as “fertile and fruitful land, fertile and fruitful like a young woman,” the Vatican as a mother carrying the Earth in her womb to which we owe “care and love as if she were a daughter.” Dr. Taylor Marshall explains how the goddess of Mother Earth was important in pagan Rome and how she was served by a transfeminine priesthood. In the run up to World Earth Day next week on the 22nd April we speak to two women who are using their skills to solve some of our environmental problems.
