ACOFAE Podcast Presents: Series Fatigue: The Dryad Storm by Laurie Forest Being excited about a new release can be scary. Being excited about a new release that is ALSO the conclusion to the series is another level of excited/scary. When that new release that is also the conclusion of the series then turns out to be a DNF for BOTH Laura Marie and Jessica Marie, then the question becomes? Was it them? or Is it really that bad? The Black Witch Chronicles comes to an end with The Dryad Storm, the book that was such a DNF that is sparked a question about fatigue and the willingness to journey through the slog. How much is the reader's time worth? When do you take ownership of your reading and acknowledge that you are not having fun? What other series suffer from series fatigue? If any? All that and more is discussed as ACOFAE Laura and ACOFAE Jessica pinpoint where the series lost them and why. "Anything for the pod, but not this." This week we head back to the fantasy realm for the first in Jennifer L Armentrout's Blood and Ash series, From Blood and Ash. The story of Poppy Balfour and Hawke Flynn - no, it's not a grown-up spin-off of Tangled (though you could be forgiven for thinking so with those names). Poppy, is bound to her close-knit but secretive community by her role as the Maiden, a sacred figure who is forbidden from experiencing anything that others around her can; including freedom. However, she has been training for years, guided by her personal guard, who has been preparing her to defend herself, though she has no idea why and what from. When the mysterious Hawke enters her life she discovers that everything she has known is not the truth she believed it to be. BYOB, the Bring Your Own Book Podcast, is back for Season 3 featuring your favourite bookworms Nikki and Kelly. Every episode we'll discuss the book we read and share our unfiltered thoughts and opinions. In today's special episode, we're sitting down with #1 New York Times & #1 International Bestselling author, Jennifer L. Armentrout, to discuss her latest book, A Fire in the Flesh! On sale as of October 31st, 2023, this highly anticipated release from Blue Box Press is the third in the Flesh and Fire series, which also happens to be a prequel and companion series to one of our favourite books at BYOB, From Blood and Ash. The only thing that can save the realms now is the one thing more powerful than the Fates. After a startling betrayal ends with both Sera and the dangerously seductive ruler of the Shadowlands she has fallen madly in love with being held captive by the false King of the Gods, there is only one thing that can free Nyktos and prevent the forces of the Shadowlands from invading Dalos and igniting a War of Primals.Convincing Kolis won't be easy, though–not even with a lifetime of training. While his most favored Revenant is insistent that she is nothing more than a lie, Kolis's erratic nature and twisted sense of honor leave her shaken to the core, and nothing could've prepared her for the cruelty of his Court or the shocking truths revealed. The revelations not only upend what she has understood about her duty and the very creation of the realms but also draw into question exactly what the true threat is. However, surviving Kolis is only one part of the battle. The Ascension is upon her, and Sera is out of time. But Nyktos will do anything to keep Sera alive and give her the life she deserves. He'll even risk the utter destruction of the realms, and that's exactly what will happen if he doesn't Ascend as the Primal of Life. Yet despite his desperate determination, their destinies may be out of their hands. But there is that foreseen unexpected thread—the unpredictable, unknown, and unwritten. We'll be talking about her writing process, what it's like to release *three* books in one year, and everything From Blood and Ash and A Fire in the Flesh. We even have some spoiler-y questions for those who have read the book so, if you don't want to be spoiled, or haven't finished reading A Fire in the Flesh yet, please refer to the chapters in this podcast episode!Where to find Jennifer:instagram: @jennifer_l_armentroutwebsite: jenniferlarmentrout.comfacebook: @Jennifer L. It's getting a bit colder, a bit darker, and things are starting to look bleak from where Dawsyn sits. The man she loves is dead, the Queens are still in power, and the Ledge still exists. Only two options: play nice and take it down from the inside or death. Dawsyn chooses death and what follows is a travel adventure that cements the found family and reinforces the lore of the Ledge, the Chasm, and the wider world at large. Betrayals abound, promises are broken, and guilt and forgiveness are center stage as The Chasm brings us to the deepest fears of the people and of Dawsyn. “Stay the Frost, Watch the Chasm, The Cold is not Alive." Welcome to #Millennial, the home of pretend adulting and real talk! We are joined this week by Christine Riccio and Natasha Polis from Those Forking Fangirls to discuss the significant uptick in interest (and sales) of literary romance and YA novels. Today's conversation was inspired by this NPR article:From meet-cutes to happy endings, romance readers feel the love as sales heat up.  Christine and Natasha help us dig in on the pipeline from Young Adult to Romance, how the genres somewhat overlap, and how the culture has shifted to make open enjoyment of the Romance genre more socially accepted. Might some of the shifts in cover art portrayals have made the genre more comfortable and accessible to readers? Are there any cases where the cute, cartoony covers fail to communicate the spicy, smutty passages between the covers? Fan Fiction seems to have played a major role in these developments, with more people participating in online fan spaces to create new content. There are even recent examples of very successful fan fic authors going on to become published, like Christina Lauren, EL James, Alice Clayton, and Ali Hazelwood. Is there any direct correlation between the rise in interest for romance novels as a genre and the uptick in romance-based reality TV shows? What sort of escapism do they provide? What recommendations do Christine and Natasha have for current romance readers, or those hoping to get started? "From Blood and Ash" by Jennifer L Aremntrout, "Spoiler Alert" by Olivia Dade, "A Court of Silver Flames" by Sarah J Maas, "Part of Your World" by Abby Jimenez, "Verity" by Colleen Hoover, "Anna & the French Kiss" by Stephanie Perkins, "The Soulmate Equation" by Christina Lauren, "The Hating Game" by Sally Thorne, "A Court of Thorns and Roses" by Sarah J. Maas. And of COURSE - "Twilight" by Stephenie Meyer.  This week's recommendations are all over the map: Andrew's shameless plug to use his Visible by Verizon referral code to get $20 off your first month, "Sons of the Forest" (Laura), 'Daisy Jones & The Six' on Prime Video (Pam), "Ninth House" (Christine), and "Sanditon" on Masterpiece airing 3/19/23 (Natasha). And in this week's installment of After Dark, available on Patreon: Last week we revealed all the bad things we did as kids and teens, but this week we're revealing the much more scandalous escapades our parents thought we were into. Weed orgies, illicit drug use on a church playground, underage sex, and all sorts of really interesting things none of us were actually cool enough to be doing.

On this week's episode of Currently Reading, Kaytee and Meredith are discussing: Bookish Moments: bookish laundry and thoughts on starting a book Current Reads: a few Indie Press List titles that blew our socks off and some additional great books Deep Dive: crotchety old ladies talk about their bookstagram pet peeves Book Presses: a smart thriller and a great YA pick As per usual, time-stamped show notes are below with references to every book and resource we mentioned in this episode. If you'd like to listen first and not spoil the surprise, don't scroll down!  New: we are now including transcripts of the episode (this link only works on the main site). These are generated by AI, so they may not be perfectly accurate, but we want to increase accessibility for our fans! *Please note that all book titles linked below are Bookshop affiliate links. Your cost is the same, but a small portion of your purchase will come back to us to help offset the costs of the show. If you'd prefer to shop on Amazon, you can still do so here through our main storefront. Anything you buy there (even your dishwasher detergent!) kicks a small amount back to us.
