To conclude the lucrative enterprise that was our Barbie™ theme month, we deliver a fashionably late episode on Barbie™ and the Magic of Pegasus (2005). Featuring a totally straight main villain, a magical cloud kingdom that controls the weather, figure skating and gambling addiction, and a "cunty little polar bear." It's a formulaic entry in the Barbie franchise, but nevertheless a continued showcase for the work of Mainframe Entertainment. Film covered for the podcast is Barbie™ and the Magic of Pegasus. Written by Elana Lesser & Cliff Ruby. Directed by Greg Richardson. Original release date September 18, 2005. Plus, all the usual social media as strategicmonk. 2:15-7:14  Greg's story of growing up to be a “right answer” guy, and while that was great for being a criminal prosecutor, it didn't serve him in becoming himself.  Why he became a lawyer: Perry Mason and presidential aspirations. 7:14- 11:50 When reality smacked into Greg: the theft of tires from a salvage yard, and the path to spiritual direction. California girls, Pasadena, the Rose Bowl, and the losing Wisconsin team. 11:50-18:30  How the practice of your faith—your spirituality—can change. The role of a spiritual director, as Greg practices: deep listening, asking questions, laughing and crying, Where counselors or therapists help you move toward an image of healthy or right; spiritual directors provide insight and practices to help you uncover new realities and openness. Spiritual practice vs spiritual discipline. 18:30-19:40 Where are you closest to God? Where is the sacred for you? When to go back to church, and when not to. Sacred is everywhere. 19:40-29:40  Interior stillness and solitude. Why it takes so long to get your head quiet, and how centering prayer teaches the rhythm, familiarity, and viewpoint of interior stillness. Greg's experience as a Benedictine oblate as going home to silence. Stillness is within, and brings us back to ourselves. 29:40-37:00  How do you encourage community and find it for yourself? Check out Greg's #wordstoliveby chat on Twitter Sundays, 6 p.m. Pacific. The Dream of God by Verna Dozier distinguishes between the institution of church and the practice of following Jesus. The apparent danger to others of Christian participation in  civil spiritual conversation.  Integrating spirituality into daily routine. 37:00-44:30  Greg schools Benton on beer, starting with the Sonoran White Chocolate Ale and Left Hand's Nitro Milk Stout. The ins and outs of pilsners, IPAs, stouts, and porters, and nursing mothers in England. What craft beer is, maybe, and Greg's dabelly.com column The Art Of Craft, on the spiritual aspects of brewing. 44:30-47:00 Benton fesses up to having more than one beer during the interview. In today's episode, Greg Richardson joins me to talk about his strategic approach to spirituality. Greg is a Spiritual Leadership Coach that helps people learn and strengthen a specific set of skills and abilities to develop a particular part of their lives. Much of what Greg does as a leadership coach begins with guiding people as they bring their core values, principles, and inner strengths to bear on matters of work and leadership. He knows that leadership begins with knowing and sharing your truest self. He has been a leader in a wide variety of situations and organizations. As a criminal prosecutor and a university professor, an executive and a volunteer, he has helped bring out the best in the people around him. Early on, Greg decided to give himself an incentive. If he met one of his main goals, he would get his first tattoo. It took him some time to decide what he would get. He considered some options, then chose his favorite story of the Desert Mothers and Fathers. These people who left the comforts of cities to live in the wilderness, planted the seeds of Western monasticism. You can learn more about Greg and what he has to offer at www.StrategicMonk.com, and if you are interested, Greg would be very happy to show you his tattoo. Blacksburg, VA raised $91,000 to build a 1 gig network downtown using crowdfunding (bit.ly/ZVsVIz). A Kansas City neighborhood crowdfunded a wireless network buildout. Have we found the key to unlocking a big increase in broadband networks? As interest in this tactic builds, two community broadband veterans are rolling out a Web tool to crowdfund, aggregate demand and coordinate stakeholders. The design of this service reflects a belief that funding is just one of the challenges communities must address. Crowdfiber co-founders Greg Richardson and Bailey White advocate an integrated approach to broadband deployment that builds a pre-launch subscriber base while simultaneously raising money to fund the network. In addition, communities must be adept at organizing and project management. Listeners come away from this interview with a better understanding of: * crowdfunding best practices; * using the Google “fiberhoods” tactic to map demand; and * organizing stakeholders (a.k.a. herding cats).
