Efficient AI Model EconomicsThe Big Themes:GenAI and its practical application: GenAI has emerged as a major focus in enterprise settings, with organizations exploring its potential to enhance core business processes. While many have successfully integrated generative AI into their workflows, others face challenges moving beyond continuous prototyping to actual production deployment. Key to overcoming these hurdles is understanding the limitations and capabilities of AI models.Economic advantages of smaller AI models: Smaller AI models, such as the 35 billion parameter models from Cohere, represent a significant economic shift in the AI landscape. These models, which can be run on a single GPU, offer a more cost-effective alternative to larger models, reducing the financial burden associated with AI deployment. These mid-sized models are not only cheaper but also capable of covering the majority of use cases effectively.AI integration into Oracle's software-as-a-service (SaaS) portfolio: Oracle has integrated generative AI into its software-as-a-service (SaaS) portfolio, enhancing various business functions without additional charges. This integration includes features like automated job postings and Salesforce optimization. Greg notes that this approach adds significant value to Oracle's offerings. The Big Quote: “People try to chase the latest and be on the frontier but never really commit to making something work for production."

Journalism has been in a state of disruption since the development of the Internet. The Metaverse, or what some describe as the future of the Internet, is likely to fuel even further disruption in journalism. Digital platforms and journalism enterprises are already investing substantial resources into the Metaverse, or its likely components of artificial intelligence, augmented reality and virtual reality. Although research shows most of the public has little knowledge of the Metaverse, many are keenly interested in what it or its components may bring. Journalism and the Metaverse (Anthem Press, 2024) by Dr. John Pavlik critically examines the nature of the Metaverse and its implications for journalism. In particular, the book will examine how the advance of a broadband, interactive and immersive Internet called the Metaverse may change the content and format of news, the nature of journalistic work, who or what is a journalist, the nature and structure of the new industry and how it is funded, as well as the fundamental role of journalism in a digital society. In particular, this book builds on a vision of the Metaverse as an immersive and interactive virtual world, a key development in the next generation of the broadband, publicly accessible Internet. Broadband means high-speed, high-bandwidth Internet connectivity, especially wirelessly. Immersive refers to enveloping, 3D forms of media and communication. Today, we often see immersive media in the form of augmented reality (AR) or virtual reality (VR) or other forms of what are labeled extended Reality (XR). Fueled by artificial intelligence, these forms are three dimensional (3D), they have depth and they surround the user in a 360 virtual world visually and aurally (and potentially via other senses, including the haptic). Interactive means both user-to-user engagement (e.g., social media) as well as an exchange between the user and the enveloping content experience of a virtual world. This book examines the implications of the Metaverse for journalism in four broad domains, including content, how journalists work, structural and systemic considerations, and user and public engagement with news. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. I was in a car accident back in November 2023 and had to seek medical treatment for whiplash. I was referred to Pavlik Center for Health and Wellness and met Dr. Jae and also Dr. Dan Jr. (most of the docs go by Dr. and their first name).  Dr. Dan is an expert in his field of chiropractic care. His 5 words that describe him are “Laid Back, Born to Heal.”  On this episode we talked about the use of laser and light therapy, maybe x-ray vision that allows a person to be scanned with x-ray glasses rather than an MRI or X-Ray machine. He also shared the most common misconceptions about chiropractic care and dispels those fears with truth.  Tune in to hear more about his thoughts of what Healthy Care looks like now and what treatment might look like in 2030.  His thought leader is his father, Dr. Dan Pavlik, Sr., who founded Pavlik Center who encouraged him during his career journey to Think Outside the Box and helped him develop a mindset of providing the best care possible to his patients. As a patient care technician at UAMS and a student intern at the Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Jenna is passionate about applying her biomedical engineering skills and knowledge to improve the quality and accessibility of healthcare. Jenna has received the Gilman Scholarship, was awarded first place at the NWA Biodesign Sprint Program, has been included in published research in the GeroScience journal, co-founded and led the Pre-Med Hogs student organization, and completed several study abroad programs in Germany and Kenya. She is also an active member of the Army ROTC, the Honors College Executive Board, and various pre-health and medical humanities clubs. What's the worst that will happen if you try?” - Jenna Kempkes, (14:34) “I hear the word entrepreneurship and I [think] I'm too young. I can't do that. I still feel that way sometimes because it's this scary world and you hear these people and everything they've given up for it…I didn't realize that it could be something I explored safely at the University and that I didn't have to have some big idea…And now I've realized you don't have to start a business to be an entrepreneur.” - Jenna Kempkes, (20:11) “Encourage an open mind. Having an open mind about everything around you is life changing...and so that closed mindset could have stopped me from a lot of things, but I'd want to encourage myself to take those opportunities. There's nothing wrong with failing. A lot of people want to be perfect, they're high achieving. It's scary to fail, but it's okay to fail. And I feel like I've learned more through my failures than I have through my successes.” - Jenna Kempkes, (23:12)

--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/larepublika/message

Today's guest is Coach Mark Pavlik. Involved in all aspects of the Penn State men's volleyball program as a player, assistant coach and head coach and one of the winningest and well-respected coaches in the sport, Mark Pavlik is in his 28th year at the helm of the Nittany Lion men's volleyball program in Happy Valley. A return to competition in 2021 set the stage for Pavlik to win his 600th career match and continued a special season as he led Penn State to Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) regular-season and tournament championships, an NCAA Tournament victory and a 20-plus win season for the 22nd time in his head coaching career. Pavlik resides in McAlevys Fort, Pennsylvania, with his wife, the former Heather Blough, and their son Jackson. Heather, a three-time AVCA First Team All-American setter for Juniata College, is now the head coach for the Eagles women's volleyball team that won the Division III National championship in 2004 and 2006 under head coach Larry Bock. We discuss: -First being introduced to the sport and falling in love with the game -His experience as a freshman at PSU -Deciding to manage the team his junior and senior year -Having the self-realization that being a "player" was not in his future, but being a coach could be... -Remaining kind and gracious during wins and losses -Sharing the motto for identify potential in sports; "either you can do it or not." You can touch the top of the backboard or not. You can set for a Division One team or not. This way you know where you belong. -Leaving skin in the south gym, that helped me get over my regret of quitting the team over 30 years ago -Two main differentiators in the game: 1. Are you AVAILABLE (to make the commitment) and 2. Can you make those around you BETTER? -Being a conduit for culture, and adopting the BEST from the prior era's to build the program -Teaching players that "they are writing their story right now". They can determine how it ends based on their efforts today. -Not everyone is at 80% working efficiency every day, but you better show up giving all 100% of your ability on any day. -Respect each other, no one has a great day everyday, help each other out -Surround yourself with people that want to help you achieve excellence As I write this, my 1987 Third Place NCCA Trophy sits on my bookshelf and the memories will remain in my heart forever.
