In November 1982, South Korean boxer Duk-Koo Kim entered the boxing ring to fight American boxer Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini in a highly awaited bout that received a lot of media attention. The two were competing for the WBA lightweight title. In the 14th round of what was a ferocious contest, Mancini headed straight for Kim, where he blasted him with a sharp left hook. Mancini missed with a left and a right, then connected with a straight right to the centre of Kim's face. The South Korean tumbled backward, falling flat on his back, and sliding underneath the ropes. Kim stayed down for a couple of seconds before rolling over and getting to his knees. His vision was impaired, and he struggled to grasp the lower rope. Once Kim clutched it, he stood halfway up and began to stumble backward. Referee Richard Green recognized the injured fighter's instability, waved both hands over his head, and declared the fight over. Sean & Johnston present the story of two fighters from contrasting backgrounds who created a moment that would destroy lives and change boxing forever! Learn more about your ad choices. For their ninth studio album and Sammy Hagar's third album as lead singer, Hagar suggested Van Halen title it F*CK (... only the * was a letter). Censorship in rock music was a controversial topic at the time, and Hagar wanted to push limits. The name changed to For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge when Hagar was told by Ray "Boom Boom” Mancini that the vulgarity was actually an acronym for this phrase. For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge was intended to be a return to the rock roots of Van Halen after a number of albums featuring more use of synthesizers and a stronger pop feel. The album took a year to make, as Van Halen was one of the most successful and well-known rock bands at the time, and the members were enjoying the material fruits of that success. They also had their own recording studio (Eddie Van Halen's 5150 Studios), and money sufficient to not have to worry about rushing an album out.Critical reception was mixed at best. Nevertheless, it was a commercial hit, debuting at number 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart. We hope you enjoy this album podcast, and the debate on the David Lee Roth/Sammy Hagar eras of Van Halen.P.S. Wayne is crazy if he doesn't like Sammy.Guest contributor Joe Davis brings us his favorite Van Halen album. Judgement DayThis deeper cut is the second track from the album. It is a fast moving, hard rocking critique of conservative Christianity's moves to censor words and actions. This song contains screams from Hagar and Anthony that are some of the loudest notes hit by the two on any Van Halen song.Pleasure DomeJoe picked this song because he considers it “the best guitar solo in any Van Halen song.” Many consider the song to be inspired by Rush's “Xanadu,” and both take inspiration from the Samuel Taylor Coleridge poem “Kubla Kahn.” The lyrics reflect the temptation and trap that is a life focused on pleasure. The Dream Is OverThis deep cut discusses the disillusionment when the dream of easy money or success following "the system" results in failure. If a generation can't succeed by the rules of society, then “dream another dream, this dream is over.”RunaroundAnother deep cut, this one starts with a six-stringed bass guitar. A number of innovations were featured in this album, from this six-string guitar to the use of a drill near the pickups to start "Poundcake." The lyrics are about a girl who can't get pinned down. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:(Everything I do) I Do It For You by Bryan Adams (from the motion picture "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves")Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman starred in this rendition of the classic Robin Hood tale. STAFF PICKS:It's You That Leaves Me Dry by EMFWayne gets the staff picks rolling with the Manchester sound. This deep cut from the same album that gave us “Unbelievable” was a popular track in dance clubs in the UK. The lyrics are about a bad relationship where one partner sucks the life out of another. All the Time in the World by JunkyardRob brings us another deep cut with a Motley Crue feel. Junkyard hails from Los Angeles, and this song went to number 24 on the charts. The members of Junkyard were fans of the Southern Rock sound, though not fans of Southern Rock culture.Losing My Religion by R.E.M.Friend of the show John Lynch brings us one which is definitely not a deep cut! This mandolin-based song is the lead single off "Out of Time," R.E.M.'s seventh studio album. Lead singer Michael Stipe has stated that the song is not about religion - despite the title - but more about losing temper, or feelings of desperation.Man In The Box by Alice In Chains Joe finishes off the staff picks with a track loosely about censorship, but more specifically inspired by a discussion about cattle being raised in small boxes with little room. This also ushers in the start of the grunge era. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Black Napkins by Frank ZappaThe always eclectic Frank Zappa finishes us off this week with a jazzy instrumental piece.

We get ready for the final weekend in January and a world Cruiserweight title fight in Ohio involving legendary Don King as the promoter. And host TJ Rives is ready to get insight from a Hall of Fame fighter, who will be on the call Saturday on the latest "Big Fight Weekend Podcast" First, welcomes former World Lightweight champion Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini up first to discuss the WBC Cruiserweight Championship fight between two Africans, champion "Junior" Makabu of Congo and Thabiso Mchunu of South Africa in a scheduled 12 rounder. Mancini gives the preview of that bout and also the WBA "regluar" Heavyweight title fight between unbeaten Floridian Trevor Bryan and little known challenger, Jonathan Guidry of Louisiana . Plus it's a bit of a homecoming for Mancini, who from nearby Youngstown, Ohio, with the ninety-year-old King bringing his "Return to Greatness" show Saturday night back to his home state. Next up, TJ talks the trainer/cornerman for former World Welterweight Champion Keith "One Time" Thurman. Dan Birmingham is back aboard on the podcast to give insight into Thurman's training after nearly a two-and-a-half year layoff. The Florida native Thurman gets set to take on Mario Barrios in a Fox Sports pay-per-view next Saturday night in Las Vegas. Birmingham talks about Thurman's preparation and mindset for the upcoming battle with the Texan Barrios. Finally, TJ is joined over in England by David Payne (aka "The Boxing Writer") Payne has great historical perspective and insight, especially on the Heavyweight division. He and TJ discuss all of the news of the week and whether former Unified Heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua will "step aside" from fighting his rematch with Alexander Usyk. That would be so Usyk could fight WBC heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury, next. Or, will Joshua go ahead and fight Usyk himself? What does this also mean for a possible fight between Fury and fellow English Countryman Dillian Whyte to be happening this Spring? Payne gives his takes and answers. Ray Mancini is a self-proclaimed “product of his environment.” Growing up in Youngstown, Ohio, he took the blue-collar work ethic that is engrained in that town and brought it to the ring. This week’s episode gave me the delight of sitting down with Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, a former WBA Lightweight title holder, and talking about many different ideals of sports and life. In our conversation, we discuss how his father’s service in World War II led Ray’s drive to win a title for him, how growing up “on the streets” taught him what he needed to know about life, what it means to prepare for a fight mentally, and how intestinal fortitude can’t be taught. We dive into how dishonesty ultimately ends up hurting you the most, how living with his trainer helped Ray land into the mindset of a fighter, how the support from his parents paved the way for his own parenting style, and how visualizing your goals can ultimately lead you to them. This is an inspirational talk with plenty of life lessons to take away. Ray is a great storyteller and speaker who takes the lessons he learned as a boxer and applies them to his everyday life. Tune into this special episode and find out how to get a “Doctorate in life” from Ray.

We got Turturro family friend Mark Kriegel in the house! This guy has a way with words. Mark narrates for documentaries and he’s also written biographies on guys like Joe Namath, Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini and a ton of other icons. He once wrote a book about the guy who ratted on John Gotti. IT WAS AMAZING! Big Nick loved it so much he turned it into a screenplay. Trying to get it made, that’s a whole different story. Let's just say it involved brown paper bags full of money... WHAT?!
Tony Hinchcliffe grew up in an all black neighborhood in Youngstown, Ohio and it gave him an unshakable confidence that they don't teach you in private schools. Growing up near real life super hero Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini gave him the world view of an unbreakable bad ass and he is determined to walk the razor's edge of speaking truth in comedy. We talk about the poor ratty whites who will regret eight years of Trump if the still end up being losers during the white nationalist roar that the Trump presidency is. We talk about the trick of American society being that we chatter about race when we should be paying more attention to class and inequality. Now that our country has been sold out to the Russians we might be seeing those round pointy things that you see on the Kremlin on our white house to accommodate the real master of that domain. Doing dark and twisted humor is now a crusade because everyone is so touchy about everything. Tony is committed to the big dick rock & roll approach to comedy and he reminds me that the "cancel generation" doesn't buy tickets to comedy shows. As the earth spins out of control with hate, stupidity and cruelty it has never been a better time to be Tony Hinchcliffe, with his 'Kill Tony' podcast crushing the charts and him selling enough tickets to keep calling the shots. His comedy is fearless and he always slices out the heart with a hard edge and that is why it is my pleasure to present to you now Tony Hinchcliffe! patreon.com/tomrhodesradiosmartcamp

Boxing has always had its share of violent injuries, and even deaths. But when Korean fighter Kim Duk-Koo collapsed after losing by technical knockout to Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini in a WBA Lightweight title match, his death four days later would trigger serious changes. Mancini was a second generation boxer who was a 21 year old champion and future star in 1982. His opponent at Ceasars Palace in November of 1982 was a lightly regarded and barely known Korean fighter who had grown up extremely poor and found a way to success through boxing. The match was closer than many commentators believed it would be, with Kim closing Mancini's eye early in the match. After the 10th round, however, the champion took the upper hand, and Mancini began to land flurries of punches on Kim. In the 14th, Mancini landed a hard right, missed with a left, and then knocked Kim down with another right. Kim would pull himself up on the ropes, but referee Richard Green stopped the match. Kim instantly collapsed and died four days later. His mother would commit suicide three months later, while Richard Green would also kill himself the following June. Ray Mancini would seem forever haunted by Kim's death. Boxing overall decided to make a wide range of changes that protected boxers' health.

The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Ray "Boom-Boom" Mancini. Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini (born Raymond Michael Mancino; March 4, 1961) is a retired American boxer. He held the World Boxing Association lightweight championship from 1982 to 1984. Mancini inherited his distinctive nickname from his father, veteran boxer Lenny "Boom Boom" Mancini, who laid the foundation for his son's career. Mancini is part of the 2015 class for the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Former boxing champion, film producer and actor. Ray recently moved from LA back to his hometown of Youngstown, Ohio. He has created a charity to help the citizens of Youngstown. He is also building a film studio and is currently in pre-production of the new Mickey Rourke film there
The life of lightweight boxing champion Ray 'Boom Boom' Mancini reads like a Greek tragedy which is why it makes the perfect movie, 'The Good Son.' During his rise to become a champ he was struck down by the death of his brother Lenny which only propelled him to get back into the ring. Then the worst thing that could possibly happen did - - Duk Koo Kim died following the match that gave him his title at Caesars Palace on November 13, 1982. Any other man might have thrown in the towel; but not Ray. Instead he chose to deal with whatever obstacles life gave him with grace and dignity. In the film you see his life come full circle years later when he meets Kim's family. Celebrating his success at the premiere party he tells host Robin Milling, 'everyone takes their shots and you got to keep moving forward. My faith kept me from jumping off a bridge.' Ray is certainly moving forward. At 52, he has re-invented himself in the wine business launching three new wines from Napa under the name South Paw; named for being a lefty as well as for his last name 'Mancino' which means left-handed. He is also a poet. Writing since he was a kid, his mother would secretly enter his poems into contests. He recalls, 'I'd get in the mail you're an honorary member of the National Poets Society. What's this?!' For everything Ray from wine to memorabilia, visit http://www.rayboomboommancini.com http://thegoodsondocumentary.com/
