Is your credit union ready for what is happening in mortgage banking right now? HT2622 - The Secondary Market As you can well imagine, I receive dozens of emails every day from galleries, collectors, agents, and promoters who have prints for sale. My first thought when I see these emails and the prices for the prints they are offering is to wonder how much of that gets back to the creator, the photographer, the individual whose creativity and effort created the work. The poor artist get nothing from the sale in the secondary market. Worse, whatever efforts they spend to market their own work robs them of the precious time and energy needed to make work. The Quiet Shift Ending the Bourbon Boom The script explains how bourbon's decade-long boom—marked by soaring prices, scarcity, secondary-market flipping, and “hunting” culture fueled by online communities—has begun to shift quietly rather than crash. Once overlooked in the 1980s and 1990s, bourbon surged in the early 2010s as consumers sought authenticity and tradition, turning hard-to-find bottles like Pappy Van Winkle and Weller into status symbols. Distilleries expanded and laid down record barrels assuming demand would keep rising, but aging delays mean today's market is now facing millions of ready barrels while demand softens. Signs include bottles sitting longer, slower price increases, and declining secondary prices. Changing drinking habits—less collecting, more experiences, and more competition from tequila and ready-to-drink options—point to a reset: improved availability, stabilized prices, and renewed focus on enjoying the whiskey itself. 00:00 Bourbon Boom Peaks 00:49 How Hype Took Over 02:17 Scarcity and Secondary Market 03:20 Early Signs of a Shift 03:58 Barrel Glut Reality Check 04:44 New Drinkers New Trends 05:24 Reset and Enjoy Again 05:56 From Hype to Reality

The venture capital model of the last two decades, characterized by the "30-minute rule" and the race to a quick IPO, is obsolete. We are witnessing a fundamental decoupling of capital from geography and a restructuring of how liquidity is manufactured. In this episode, Andrew Romans of 7BC Venture Capital argues that we have entered a new era where geopolitical friction is forcing a renaissance in hard tech, hedge funds have permanently altered the growth stage, and the "Series A" playbook has been rewritten by the realities of a market where companies stay private indefinitely.Highlights01:05 Why 30 Firms Control the Market09:49 "Stay Private Forever" & The Secondary Market 19:51 Geopolitics, Supply Chains, & Defense Tech30:30 Hedge Fund Tourists & Founder-Led VCs37:11 The Death of the "30-Minute Rule" 47:35 Beyond "Silicon Hills" Guest LinksAndrew Romans: LinkedIn, X7BC Venture CapitalFireside with a VC: Apple, Spotify, YouTube -------------------Austin Next Links: Website, X/Twitter, YouTube, LinkedInEcosystem Metacognition Substack

Private markets are swelling, public markets are shrinking, and the line between the two has never been blurrier. In this episode, CJ sits down with Scott Voss, Managing Partner at HarbourVest, to make sense of what's happening across venture, private equity, credit, and secondaries. Scott explains why companies like SpaceX and OpenAI are now valued alongside public giants, how the surge in take-privates is reshaping corporate strategy, and what happens when the quarterly earnings pressure disappears. They dive into the rise of GP-led deals, the evolving role of private credit as the “third voice in the room,” and why liquidity—not scarcity—will define this cycle. Scott also breaks down the growing appeal of evergreen and permanent capital structures, plus what AI mega-deals signal about the next phase of private investing.—LINKS:Scott Voss on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/scott-voss-b91b94/HarbourVest Partners: https://www.harbourvest.comCJ on X (@cjgustafson222): https://x.com/cjgustafson222Mostly metrics: https://www.mostlymetrics.comRELATED EPISODES:Secondaries, Continuation Vehicles, and Sidecar Funds: Private Equity with HarbourVest's Scott Voss -—TIMESTAMPS:(00:00:00) Preview and Intro(00:02:49) Sponsor – Mercury | RightRev | Tipalti(00:06:43) Opening Conversation(00:07:23) The Blurring Line Between Public and Private(00:09:36) The Rise of Mega Venture(00:11:20) The First $10 Trillion Company(00:12:28) The Shrinking Public Markets(00:13:09) Take-Private Playbook(00:14:04) Why Companies Go Private(00:16:00) Sponsor – Aleph | Rillet | Fidelity Private Shares(00:19:21) Efficiency and Exits(00:23:15) Liquidity in Private Markets(00:24:01) Secondaries and GP-Led Deals(00:27:14) Yale and the Secondary Market(00:29:09) Innovation and the Rise of GP-to-GP Trades(00:30:16) Liquidity Cycles and Interest Rates(00:33:18) The Third Voice in the Room – Private Credit(00:34:44) Private Credit and GP-Led Deals(00:36:02) Interest Rates and Deal Spreads(00:37:15) The Major Players in Private Credit(00:38:09) Regulation and Risk(00:39:25) Private Credit vs. Traditional Lending(00:40:33) Evergreen and Permanent Capital(00:45:57) Expanding Access to Private Markets(00:47:03) Understanding the Cap Table(00:47:44) AI Deals and Consolidation(00:50:00) The Evolution of AI and Blockchain(00:53:20) Funding Innovation and Risk(00:55:28) Lessons From Investing(00:55:39) Nostalgia and Life Phases(00:57:06) Nostalgia and the 1990s(00:59:21) Learn, Earn, and Return(01:00:45) Talking Nostalgia at Dinners(01:01:27) Summer Surfing(01:02:25) Wrap-Up and Closing—SPONSORS:Fidelity Private Shares is the all-in-one equity management platform that keeps your cap table clean, your data room organized, and your equity story clear—so you never risk losing a fundraising round over messy records. (Originally recorded 07/16/25) We are a week out from SDCC 2025 and we wanted to take a look at what we were looking forward to this year. As it turns out, not much. Stephe is having a week of death by a thousand cuts. Bruce saw Superman. Stephe didn't. Stephe also hasn't seen Stick. So, we moved on to the Con talk. Neither of us is especially jazzed about this year's batch of exclusives. We go into pretty great detail about why. Stephe is especially down on Funko's offerings. In fact, in this episode we get the long awaited Funko Heel Turn from Hall of Famer. We talk about Adventures in the Secondary Market and what items from that end of the spectrum we may be hunting. Etrigan, I'm looking at you. Stephe hits us with more of his new "Casual Villainy" vibe. Of course, we played "What's on Your Desk?" This episode's edition caused Bruce to recall a game from his childhood. Enjoy and we'll catch you in SD next week.

Ever wondered what happens when your right to resell clashes with someone else's trademark? The secondary market is booming—from luxury perfumes to used hard drives and even virtual farm animals—but these second lives come with surprising legal complications.Secondary markets aren't just about thrift store finds anymore. They're complex ecosystems where intellectual property law determines what you can truly do with the things you've purchased. Through a global tour of fascinating court cases, we unpack the legal principles that govern reselling, refurbishing, and reimagining products across physical and digital realms. In Norway, a phone repair shop learned the hard way that erasing Apple logos from replacement screens doesn't erase their legal obligations. Meanwhile, in India, courts embraced refurbished Seagate hard drives as sustainability wins. The digital world presents even thornier questions—can you resell an e-book like a paperback? (Spoiler: European courts say no.) And what about those $133,000 "MetaBirkin" NFTs that landed an artist in hot water with Hermès?From Brazilian video game importers to Italian pharmaceutical repackagers, we explore how trademark exhaustion works differently across borders. You'll discover why Chanel fights so hard to control where its perfumes are sold, how Zynga protected its virtual cows from unauthorized trading, and what happens when Finnish axes travel from North America to the Czech Republic without permission.Whether you're flipping consoles, fixing phones, or minting NFTs of luxury handbags, understanding these landmark cases could save you from accidental infringement. Secondary markets provide real benefits—reducing waste and extending product lifecycles—but navigating them legally requires knowing when ownership ends and intellectual property begins.Subscribe to Intangiblia for more plain talk about complex IP issues that affect everyday transactions in our increasingly digital marketplace.
