Hello all, The Cricket Slouch podcast is back with a broad post-mortem review of New Zealand's historical whitewash over India in India.I am joined by Shounak and Aryan in dissecting what NZ did well and where India fell behind in this series and wondering what may have been if certain events had panned out differently.Whilst NZ did the basics well, this series loss was a perfect storm of things going wrong for the Indian side and we ponder whether this side is now ready to transition towards youngsters. We talk a little about the squad for the BGT and how India are likely to perform there.Take away message - Paternal obligations are the secret to away wins !Shounak writes features for Emerging Cricket.Aryan writes match reports and feature articles for Guerilla Cricket.
In this episode Sandeep and I are joined by Aryan Surana, who writes features and match reviews over at Guerilla Cricket, to talk about the return of cricket to Gwalior, the Ind-Bangla series, the potency of the Indian test attack and other notable points. We also pay our respects to the late Ratan Tata, may he rest in peace. Aryan's two recent articles on cricket in Gwalior can be found here -Article 1 - general return of cricket to GwaliorArticle 2 - Interview with Mr Scindia

Percy Fender Memorabilia Auction: Online now here: https://auctions.bhandl.co.uk/lots?term=percy%20fender&categoryCode=SME Live Auction to be held Dec 5th at 10am. Address details below At Guerilla Cricket, we are huge fans of Percy George Herbert Fender. He has a starring role in our theme tune after all. Often presented as a divisive, comical, Bertie Wooster, monocle wearing figure (he never did wear one, but his wife did), he was in fact the polar opposite. Sharp, witty, principled, forward thinking, a master tactician and someone who fought for inclusivity and fairness. Perhaps he did more to reinvent cricket than any other person of his age. A renaissance man (he wrote musicals and books), and, it now turns out, was an impeccable archivist of his own life. This year Percy's son Peter sadly died, but from that has emerged a treasure trove of papers, memorabilia and photos that Percy had assembled and Peter had lovingly kept. Much of it goes to auction on December 5th but before it does, we've had access and sight into the contents and with it an insight into Percy Fender's world, including a remarkable series of never heard before recordings that Percy made in the 1960's for his son Peter and for posterity. They chart his life, his career, most of it with Surrey, his feelings, and perhaps, most telling of all, his role in Bodyline, the 1932 Test series in which cricket went to war. Amongst some amazing memorabilia in the auction is an extraordinary letter the Percy typed towards the end of his life where he tells “the truth about Bodyline”. The auction takes place at 10.00 am on December 5th at BHL St. Edmund's Court, Okehampton Street, Exeter, EX4 1DU. It will also be live here and select “Sporting equipment and memorabilia. Listen here as Tony Bishop is joined by Dan Norcross, Jon Surtees from Surrey and most importantly, Percy's two grandsons, Guy and Nick as we learn more about the remarkable Percy and unearth his truth about Bodyline. As we approach the end of the league phases of the CWC 23, and head into the knock out phase, Sandeep suggested we talk about memorable knock out matches from the ODI World Cups of the past. And to do just that, Sandeep and I are joined by other regular contributors Ajit, of Armchair Cricket and Guerilla Cricket fame, and Shounak, a regular contributor at Emerging Cricket website.Matches discussed -4:10 - India vs England 1987 WC semi final 18:25 - Pakistan vs New Zealand 1992 WC semi final31:50 - India vs Pakistan 1996 WC quarter final47:30 - Australia vs West Indies 1996 WC semi final61:30 - Australia vs South Africa 1999 WC semi final86:30
Welcome to the Bishop and Bear – the internet's favourite virtual cricket pub. The dust has just about settled from the Ashes excitement and at Guerilla Cricket we are gearing up for the Cricket World Cup. Before that, of course, comes the white ball bonanza against New Zealand and Ireland. Two fabulous guests have found their way to our Barstools of Bravado this week. St Annie of Exeter, is, of course, not remotely phased by A list celebrity company and it doesn't get much more A listy than your Ursine Landlord, your Episcopal Barman and our other guest, author, rantconteur and guerilla silver back, Hendo. She's also been interviewing Stephen Fry recently as well. England announced their ODI and T20 squads this week, including the return of Ben Stokes at, it would seem, the omission of Harry Brook, for the ODI's at least. And if you don't know about Hampshire's John Turner, we run the rule over the ‘new Glenn McGrath'. But, should he be playing for England or his native South Africa? That's a question that leads us deep into the moral and financial inequities of cricket these days. Here is the full discussion menu, around which we meander: - Stokes out of ODI Retirement? But should he be? - England ODI and T20 squads for NZ and Ireland. That should be pretty much the WC squad too? - Jump on the Metro or scoff salty snacks? Why not both? - If not The Hundred what next and when? - World Cup Warm Ups are not so far away. Australia seems to have thought there's through a bit more than England? - Ireland vs India – Might not be a massacre in T20 format? - Asia Cup – A very decent warm up for India, Pak, SL, Bangladesh and Afghanistan Don't forget, if you haven't yet got yourself some Ponting wine, our special offer for Guerilla followers and fans will stay open just a little longer. You can get that 15% discount right here using the special gcashes2023 code. Cheers. Its great to have you in the Bishop and Bear. See you next time! Wine and cricket go together wonderfully. Who better to discuss both with than Ricky Ponting. Listen here as Ricky meets Nigel Henderson and Tony Bishop to discuss the Ashes, his career and Ponting Wines that have been carefully crafted to reflect his life and to ensure flavour, structure and complexity of the highest quality. It's a quality chat too, covering coaching jobs, how he's helping grassroots cricket in England and what he really thinks about the Kevin Pietersen commentary put-down that went viral.
Aryan Surana is joined by his experienced colleagues at Guerilla Cricket for talking about the magnum opus on the horizon - Ashes. We discuss whether Steve Smith representing Sussex is a boon or a bane. Can Ben Stokes' prescription of 'fast and flat' wickets be taken at face value? Is the faith reposed in high-ceiling Zac Crawley misplaced? Will the England captain roll his arm over? The lack thereof may spread the hosts thin as Jack Leach is out injured, Broad-Anderson ought to bowl in bursts, and asking too many overs of Joe Root thaws the potency of the attack against an arch-rival dominating the batting charts in the second iteration of the World Test Championship. Aryan Surana tweets at @iamaryansurana, Tony Bishop at @tonybishop1 and Jeremy Henderson at @messyjez.
Cricket's most recognizable voice, David Lloyd, or Bumble as he is better known to lovers of the game, tests himself in the most fiendish podquiz in sport, Guerilla Cricket's Who's That Weirdo, lining up to try to identify the dead cricketers from the live cricketers and those who aren't cricketers at all (though sound as if they might be). In a hilarious show that again goes down to the wire the former England batsman, coach, manager, umpire, and commentator takes on chief County Cricket Matterer and Natterer Annie Chave, who goes to enormous lengths to protect her unbeaten run of one. Have an earwig, you'll love it! @guerillahendo hosts with Richard Osman-like input from researcher extraordinare @tonybishop1
Live cricketer? Dead cricketer? Or not a cricketer at all? All will be revealed in Who's That Weirdo? the new part podcast/part quiz from the Guerilla Cricket team that brings you 100 days of live cricket commentary a year, a website featuring news, views, features and more merchandise than you can shake a bust of an angry Ian Chappell at. Call it a quizcast. And in addition to discovering, in the most fiendish test of cricket knowledge to date, whether Wajahatullah Wasti was a bowler who took no wickets in his three Tests for Pakistan in the 1950s or was a politician in the country's National Assembly who moonlighted as a Sufi poet, you will also hear the wise words of the nicest man in cricket, Chris Woke, during the interval, as the Warwickshire and England swing bowler and social justice warrior takes time out from his busy injury schedule to raise the pressing issues of the day and embarks on his one-man mission to save cricket: Forced Inclusion

No Sam this week sadly but Tony Bishop from Guerilla Cricket joins Annie and Dan along with our special guest, Jason Gillespie. We talk declarations, captaincy, THAT Ben Stokes innings, oh and have I mentioned Middlesex went top of the table? Have a listen...
Snow, hail, rain, sunshine, wind. We had it all. That will happen if you start playing cricket in early April. But that said, what a first week. Division Two in particularly had some thrilling matches. No shortage of centuries either. No Dan Whiting this week but Annie and Sam were joined by Guerilla Cricket's Tony Bishop and Ryan Sidebottom (yes, that one). Their Sunday night reflections are here. Ryan was "fresh" from a charity football match between Bedale Town FC and a celebrity XI. Three brilliant causes so if you can spare a few bob, I'm sure they'd be very grateful:https://www.gofundme.com/f/bedale-town-fc-vs-celebrity-xi

Inside the Tour - The Ashes 1986/87 is the definitive story of an extraordinary tour, featuring many of those who were part of it, including tales of rum, wine, fancy dress and Elton John. Gladstone Small may not have played in the first three tests, but he certainly made an impact at the MCG, taking seven Australian wickets to help win the Ashes for England and the Man of the Match Award for himself. Here in conversation with @tonybishop1, the ever-engaging Gladstone recalls that match and how Ashes history was changed forever by the unlikely intervention of Sir Elton. Inside the Tour - The Ashes 1986/87 is the definitive story of an extraordinary tour, featuring many of those who were part of it, including tales of rum, wine, fancy dress and Elton John. There were certainly some larger-than-life personalities on both sides including Sir Ian Botham, Alan Lamb and David Gower to name but three for England. Chris Broad may not have been in that bon viveur category, but he let his bat do the talking and became Man of the Series. Along the way, he became only the third Englishman after Jack Hobbs and Wally Hammond to three score hundreds in consecutive Ashes matches. Here Chris recalls with Tony Bishop the cricket and the distractions for the team that proved, despite a famous claim to the contrary, that they actually could bat, bowl and field. Never mind the cricket. Who will win the Jingle Ashes? Who has the funniest, rudest, longest, shortest, daftest, most hummable earworm of a Guerilla Jingle? Two teams of Guerillas, one from Australia and one from England, got together for the ultimate pre - series Jingle off. Along the way they also found time to opine on the real cricket coming up. Our selectors supplemented current players for each country with some ringers, chosen more for their jingletasticness than their cricket (although terrific cricketers too it must be said). The Guerillas Australia: Cricket Bat Cat, Messy Jezz, SOK England: St. Annie of Exeter, Jack Hope, The Bear With love and thanks to our amazing jinglers – Mog, Jeff Perkins, James Sherwood, Men With Ven, Senor Peel, Pryke in Munich, plus many others. Bat for a Chance helps underprivileged children experience the joy of cricket. They collect and source clothing and equipment, both new and high-quality second hand, and then dispatch it to schools, clubs and academies not just in the UK, but all around the world. To help, you can donate your unused or second-hand cricket clothing and equipment via your school or local club. It sounds simple and as an idea it is. But to make a difference to so many lives and in so many different places is something else. One of the remarkable things about Bat For A Chance is that its founder and driving force Will Gaffney is still at school. Here Tony Bishop meets Will to learn more about the charity's story and remarkable work. The rain. It is relentless. Although not in Newcastle-upon-Tyne where Durham picked up an important victory over fellow high-flyers Lancashire. Sean Dickson made a maiden List A 100, while Luke Doneathy...well remember the name. Nick Selman reached three figures in List A cricket for the first time too, but Glamorgan were frustrated by the weather. Likewise Surrey who were denied what would have been a comfortable victory over Somerset by rain just 2 overs before the required 10. Lewis Goldsworthy's composed 96 for the visitors impressed, while Dan Moriarty picked up 4-30 with the ball.Joining Sam today to discuss the action was The Cricketer's Nick Friend and Guerilla Cricket's Nakul Pande. Plus Surrey stand-in skipper Jamie Smith dropped in for a chat.
Ohhhhh it was a throwback to the old Sunday League days. 7 games, a little bit of rain but all completed one way or t'other. The RLC is really hotting up now, Lancashire and Somerset finding themselves at the summit of their respective groups.Joining Sam to round up all of the action was regular co-host Ella Chandler, plus a pair of debutants: Guerilla Cricket's Nakul Pande and Deep Extra Cover's Harry Everett.
Never has it been more important to ensure the views of cricket fans are heard as we see a county system under financial pressure, the impact of the pandemic and the launch of new and not universally accepted format of the game with the Hundred. England v Sri Lanka is the big topic as Jack and Max of The Cricket Podcast are joined by Guerilla Cricket's Nakul Pande to talk T20 action. We start by discussing the three match series between England and Sri Lanka. It was a one sided affair, but what did we learn from England's selection? Which players pressed a claim for a World Cup spot and who looks like they could drop out? And are there any silver linings for the Sri Lanka team? The Vitality Blast is also well underway, and we look at who is well placed, who has performed well, and how much rain there has been. Finally, we turn to South Africa's tour of the West Indies. How are the two teams shaping up and might they be in with an outside chance of World Cup glory? India v England and the IPL Auction were the big topics in the cricket world this week and the boys (Jack, Ross, and Max) get stuck into both on this episode. In addition, they are joined for this episode by Nakul Pande, a regular broadcaster with Guerilla Cricket. Part one (5 mins in) covers India v England. This Test will take place under lights at a new stadium, will this bring the seamers into the game? There are also going to be some big selection decisions for both sides. Where will Bairstow slot in for England? And will India go with three seamers? In part two (46 mins), the boys discuss the 2021 IPL Auction. Featuring a run through of all 8 franchises and judgement on whether they thought they were winners or losers. This week on The Cricket Podcast the lads are joined by The Bear from Guerilla Cricket, for what is basically two reasonably long podcasts wrapped up in one extremely long podcast. Part one features an in depth discussion of India’s miraculous escape against Australia. Including high praise for Pant takes the plaudits and love for Pujara as he blocked the shit out of it for 65 overs throughout the Test. Unfortunately cricket wasn’t the only story and they took the time to discuss why the game was held up after Siraj was abused from the stands. Finally, to wrap up Australia and India they look forward to the fourth Test and predict who will win the decider. In part two (56 mins), the boys preview England’s tour of Sri Lanka. Will Bairstow make it back into the side? Should England fear Sri Lanka’s spin attack? And what is England’s probably XI for the first Test? Cricket writers Anindya Dutta and Ashley Gray share the pain and rewards of their craft. “There is no rule on how to write. Sometimes it comes easily and perfectly: sometimes it’s like drilling rock and then blasting it out with charges” Ernest Hemingway In March 1706, a man called William Goldwin, published a slender volume of his early verse called Musea Juveniles. Inside was the poem of 95 lines in Latin that he titled, ‘In Certamen Pilae’ (On a match at ball). As far as anyone knows this was the very first piece of cricket literature. Cricket has inspired much great writing across the 314 intervening years, although not so much of it in Latin. The likes of Neville Cardus stand out as great story tellers and stylists, lighting the path for the many that have followed. As in the game itself, the appearance of simplicity is the result of inspiration, insight, talent but plenty of perspiration too. In this Guerillashire Podcast Tony Bishop is joined by two best - selling cricket writers to discuss not just their books, but the different paths they take to go from blank page to best seller. Anindya Dutta is a former banker, now writer and Guerilla Cricket commentator who for a while has been keeping the likes of Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni off Amazon India’s top spot with his latest book The Greatest Year – The 1971 Tours of West Indies and England. Ashley Gray is a sportswriter whose stories have appeared in Wisden, Fox Sports, The Daily Telegraph, The Guardian and All out Cricket. Most recently, his book The Unforgiven, Mercenaries or Missionaries, tells the stories of West Indian cricketers who toured apartheid South Africa and has been nominated for Wisden book of the year. “Diligent research and evocative story telling combine to make this book a truly compelling read”. Praise indeed for ‘Wizards’ and its author Anindya Dutta, from none other than Kapil Dev. In this episode of Guerillashire, Tony Bishop and Anindya discuss the mystical, twirling, whirling, floating, ripping, gripping world of Indian spin bowling. No other skill has contributed more to India’s cricket – and arguably, spin bowling is what drove its race to the top. The story of Indian spin bowling goes as far back as the turn of the twentieth century. ‘Wizards’ covers no less than 74 Indian spinners, from Palwankar Baloo, though the genius of Subhash Gupte, Vinoo Mankad and Ghulam Ahmed, through the fabled spin quartet of Bedi, Prasanna, Chandra and Venkat, onto Kumble, Harbhajan and Ashwin and right up to Chahal and Kuldeep. Anindya picks two historical quartets to take on the current England side home and away. Listen to hear who they are – and who doesn’t quite make it. Most importantly let us know your selections! Angus Fraser delivers his take on the current Ashes and his finest ever Middlesex England 11. Angus Fraser made his test debut against Australia, taking 4/63 and claiming Steve Waugh as his first test wicket. In 46 tests, he took 177 wickets with a best of 8/53. At a time when England rarely had the best of things against the old enemy, in 12 Ashes tests he took 46 wickets with 3 ‘fivefers’ at a healthy average of 30. His 6 for 82 in the 1991 Boxing Day Test included Alan Border, Dean Jones and once again Steve Waugh. Listen here to here him discussing with Guerilla Cricket’s Tony Bishop the current Ashes and his own all time Middlesex England team.
Mike Gatting discusses the Ashes and his best ever Middlesex England team. 4,407 runs in 79 tests, 23 as captain with 1661 runs at 37.75 against the old enemy. Add to that, four centuries, 12 fifties (including his first Ashes test facing off to Denis Lillie), a highest score of 160 and three series wins including captaining the triumphant 1986/87 tourists. Mike Gatting knows a thing or two about beating Australia. Listen here as he discusses with Guerilla Cricket’s Tony Bishop, the current Ashes series and his own all time Middlesex England team.

The Sport: Digital and Social podcast has not been going that long but I have already spoken to key personnel at some of the world’s biggest rights-holders. However, this podcast is a little different. Guerilla Cricket, and its previous incarnation Test Match Sofa, are challenging a long-established practice of broadcasting England's national sport. This is not the cosy cake-filled commentary box of the BBC. It beers and banter in a basement flat plus humourous, sometimes sweary, jingles at major moments. (You’ll hear a few of those through this podcast). But real innovation (not just copying and twisting) so often start at this level and has to fight resistance from those in incumbent positions. So is Guerrilla Cricket revolutionary new model for live commentary that could be rolled out across other sports? Or is it just a hobby that can only exist in its sporting niche? Listen to this podcast with co-founder Nigel Walker, make up your own mind and let me know on @SportDigitalandSocial on Instagram @MrRichardClarke or my website MrRichard Clarke.com. Topics: 1.59: Nigel Walker introduces Guerilla Cricket 2.48: The toll taken by through-the-night commentaries on England in Australia 3.41: The backstory of Test Match Sofa and its transformation into Guerilla Cricket 5.38: Why The Cricketer Magazine bought Test Match Sofa and how it went wrong 7.38: The clash of culture 10.10 Why their commentary is not illegal 11.25: The wider role that Guerilla Cricket in bringing a new audience to cricket. “Everyone wants to be a commentator and why can’t you be?” 13.10 The Guerilla Cricket audience and how they use social media. @AnthCondon teams up with Guerilla Cricket's @NakulMPande to have a chat about the 2017 Women's World Cup so far. Half way through the group stage we have a look at how each team is doing, the impressive individual performances so far, what's to come, and what we predict is going to happen, along with a healthy side serving of discussion about the growing professionalism of the women's game all topped with a delicious rant about the ECB's inability to understand what their product is and how to promote it.

Pakistan have just defeated Australia 2-0, breaking every possible record along the way: It was Pakistan's first Test series win over Australia in 20 years - Misbah equalled Sir Viv Richard's Test record for the fastest Test 100 - It has been 34 years since Australia lost a Test by so many runs (356 2nd Test) - Misbah now has 14 Test victories, equalling the amount of wins by former Pakistani Test captains in Imran Khan and Javed Miandad - Australia have lost 6 straight Tests in Asia. Joining me to carve it all up is Aatif Nawaz. British - Pakistani, Stand up comedian, TV Presenter, Ball by Ball commentator on Guerilla Cricket and currently doing his show 'Muslims Do it 5 Times a Day' in the Westend.
