Our guest for this episode of Mathematica's On the Evidence podcast is Dr. Aaron Carroll, a pediatrician, health researcher, and science communicator who recently assumed the post of president and chief executive officer at AcademyHealth, the leading national organization for convening and sharing information across health services researchers, policymakers, and health care practitioners. On the Evidence spoke with Carroll ahead of his organization's Health Datapalooza conference in mid-September. This year, the event is focused on data-driven solutions that address critical public health challenges. The conference's theme reflects a collaboration between AcademyHealth and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to facilitate greater coordination and learning across health care and public health data systems. Mathematica is a member organization of AcademyHealth and a sponsor of the 2024 Health Datapalooza. In the episode, Carroll discusses what he has learned about effective science communication from blogging for The Incidental Economist, hosting the Healthcare Triage podcast, authoring several books, publishing research in peer-review journals, and contributing regularly to The New York Times. The interview covers a range of other topics as well, including the implications of climate change and artificial intelligence on health care and health services research; the need for greater interoperability among health and social services data systems; and the value of solutions for addressing the social determinants of health. The knowledgeable patient can still be seen as a threat, even by a medical resident. While every institution talks about how they much they care about their patients, they still tell patients that they don't need to see the data collected on them because they're not equipped to use their own data. And researchers might not pass useful information from trials on to the very patients who provided the input to those trials. These problems, along with suggestions for positive uses of data, are described in this video with Christine Von Raesfeld, founder of People with Empathy. Von Raesfeld herself has been dealing for 47 years with a rare disease whose cause has not yet been determined. A big proponent of collecting and using data in health care, she is one of the first patients to attend the Health Datapalooza conferences. The Health Datapalooza conference is a unique annual event. As the playful name suggests, it's a somewhat countercultural happening, a place for freewheeling and respectfully critical discussion among health data experts. The conference was launched in 2010 by Todd Park, a ground-breaking technologist who was CTO of HHS at the time and was later promoted to be CTO of the United States. Lucia Savage, Chair of the AcademyHealth Committee on Advocacy and Public Policy and Chief Privacy and Regulatory Officer at Omada Health, explains how, in contrast to most health care conferences, the Datapalooza is “not glitzy” and “not about selling stuff,” but offers “accessible dialog” among policy makers, programmers, patients, and others. The Trump administration has discarded or reworked a number of Obama-era programs. But this week's Health Datapalooza — an annual conference launched by Obama officials and hosted by Academy Health — has received the current administration's full support, a reminder that the desire to improve data can trump partisan politics. On the podcast, Academy Health CEO Lisa Simpson joined POLITICO’s Dan Diamond to discuss the Datapalooza conference (starts at the 1:25 mark), why the Trump administration continues to supports the event and how the White House has shaped the current climate for researchers (3:20), why Academy Health focuses on "health services research" and how Lisa would like academic research to change (8:15) and the state of data, particularly as Silicon Valley firms eye health care (13:30). After the break, POLITICO’s Mohana Ravindranath discusses her reporting on the Trump administration's data-access initiatives. (Starts at the 18:45 mark.) Dan also remembers POLITICO’s Brett Norman, who died last week at age 43. (Starts at the 29:35 mark.)
We are joined by Dr Rasu Shrestha, an incredibly gifted individual in the health and technology space. He was recognized by Becker’s Hospital Review as one of the 26 “Smartest People in Health IT” and InformationWeek said he was one of the “Top 20 Health IT Leaders Driving Change”. He holds two roles at UPMC in Pittsburgh. He's both the chief innovation officer for UPMC and he's also the executive vice president of UPMC Enterprises, which is the innovation and commercialization arm of UPMC - we’re going to dive into that group, what they do and how they do it. And, the latest news, this was just announced on March 19, Rasu has been named by the US Department of Veterans Affairs to lead the work mapping the electronic medical record to the FHIR APIs, and to create common data standards through industry partnerships. This could bring about the end of the interoperability problem that’s been the bane of EMRs since they came into existence. Rasu is also the co-chair of the Health Datapalooza meeting which is being held on April 26 and 27 at the Washington Hilton in Washington DC. He shares why this meeting is important and what you can expect if you head out there too. As always, you can get the links and notes from our discussion on our website at DigitalHealthToday.com/57. MediStrategy with Kip Piper Episode 11: Improving Prenatal Care and Birth Outcomes Via Mobile Technology: Interview with Juan Pablo Segura of Babyscripts Summary What if we could eliminate preterm birth by 2027? There’s an app for that. That is the moonshot goal of Babyscripts, a new model in pregnancy management that seeks to improve prenatal care and birth outcomes by supporting both pregnant moms and their physicians.
