Hi everyone.Did you know there's a global movement to solve some of our world's biggest problems by helping those with the greatest needs become self-sufficient? This movement is being led by all kinds of people and organizations: nonprofits, for profits, specialists, technicians, entrepreneurs, and investors. My guest expert on this episode, Dr. Courtney Cash, is one of those leading the way in these social entrepreneurship endeavors. On this episode, Courtney discusses such things as (1) how market-based solutions and social enterprise are being used to help solve some of the world's biggest problems, (2) what factors are driving this trend, (3) how focusing on sending large sums of money to organizations or societies in need can actually be counterproductive, and (4) where the marriage of social enterprise and market-based solutions is taking hold around the world.Courtney then lays out myriad opportunities that are being created by this emerging global trend for just about anyone: job seekers, entrepreneurs, freelancers, and what he calls the "impact investors." He also shares his thoughts on how this trend will evolve through the rest of this decade. And, of particular value, he offers some tips to help people identify and seize these opportunities. Now a bit about Courtney: Dr. Courtney Cash is President of the World Shoe Fund, where he served as the lead strategist in the development of the World Shoe social enterprise. Dr. Cash is also the founder of Simply Strategic Consulting, with almost 30 years of experience in nonprofit leadership, ministry, and consulting. His work has helped to expand the capacity of nonprofits to impact thousands of people in more than 50 countries through strategic planning, storytelling, donor engagement, and impact collaborations.Dr. Cash is a seminary-trained nonprofit and ministry leader with degrees and certifications in education, leadership, and business. In 2018, he was awarded a Certificate of Achievement in Nonprofit Fund Development by the Mendoza College of Business of the University of Notre Dame. Dr. Cash also currently serves as Executive in Residence at the Berry College Campbell School of Business, where he mentors young entrepreneurs and teaches courses in social entrepreneurship and nonprofit management.Currently, his research is focused on the development of multi-sectoral social enterprise models, market-based solutions for scaling the work of nonprofits, and the use of collective impact strategies to address major social challenges in local communities and larger international ecosystems. You'll find out more about Dr. Cash and the World Shoe Fund at www.worldshoefund.org and on LinkedIn.Now a few words about a special deal you can get just by being a Looking Forward® listener!Do you make podcasts, video courses, or other content? Episode topic: Fukushima - Resilience, Recovery, and RedemptionOn March 11, 2011, the Fukushima coastline in eastern Japan experienced a devastating triple disaster. A 9.0-magnitude earthquake, so strong that it shifted the earth's axis, caused a tsunami that generated 50-foot waves. And even though the tsunami caused most of the 18,500 disaster-related deaths, the most globally recognized disaster is the nuclear meltdown of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant, which led to the yearslong evacuation of 200,000 people in the region.Even though these disasters occurred more than 12 years ago, their effects linger, and many people in Fukushima are still determining how to rebuild their lives. In May, a Notre Dame research team of three faculty members, five undergraduate students, and an engineering alumnus visited Japan to examine resilience from multiple perspectives—business, engineering, culture, science, economics and more. With sponsorship from the Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies, the team interviewed Fukushima residents who have returned to their homes; small business owners who are hoping to revitalize the area; mental health professionals who are helping families cope with the lingering trauma of the disasters; and many others who are invested in the renewal of the area. The team also had the opportunity to tour the Daiichi Nuclear Plant, which is still in the process of being decommissioned, and the evacuation zone of abandoned homes, businesses, and communities. Humans are spiritual beings but unfortunately, because we are so influenced by external factors, many of us have become disconnected from our spiritual selves. This results in people making life and career choices that do not align with their core values or purpose, which is causing a great deal of suffering. Today's inspiring guest, Joseph Holt, is on a mission to help people make work (and life) decisions that allow them to live their lives in a way that is true to their core values, ideals and beliefs. Joe has held an amazingly diverse range of jobs throughout the course of his life, from gym teacher to Jesuit priest to stock broker to corporate attorney, to today where he is living out his calling as a professor at the University of Notre Dame's Mendoza College of Business teaching spirituality, ethics, gender equity, and negotiations courses. In this episode, Joe delves into the 7 Recommended Practices for Being Your Spiritual Best Self at Work that he has developed, which include: Set yourself up for spiritual success Determine whether you need to see your current work differently or do different work Be alert for opportunities to be your spiritual best self Choose your work (and life) friends wisely Be as committed to your spiritual well-being as you are to your physical well-being Monitor your spiritual progress (or regress!) with special attention to impact Listen most of all to the quiet inner voice that guides you at your best. Dr. Angela Logan - We jumped back in with our series on money, as we focused on Money Possibilities. Because we are icons made in the image of God, we are called to be generous, both individually and collectively, because God is generous. But what does generosity look like, and how can we live in the currents of generosity? This week, we reflect on "The 4 Ts" (Time, Talent, Treasure, and Testimony), to learn from Scripture how God shows up in those areas, and how we can challenge ourselves to show up for our city and the world. This weekend, we got to hear from Dr. Angela Logan. Dr. Logan is an Associate Teaching Professor and the St. Andre Bessette Academic Director of the Master of Nonprofit Administration in the Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre Dame. Her research focuses on the intersection of gender, race, and nonprofit and philanthropic leadership. She is the first African American woman to earn a Ph.D. in Philanthropic Studies from the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy and this past week she was recognized as one of the two inaugural recipients of the Notre Dame Black Excellence Faculty Award. During 2022, the industry has continued to experience global supply chain challenges and the effect it has had on the American economy. The pandemic disrupted global supply chains and it tested the resilience and flexibility of supply chain leaders. While COVID-19 was not a typical risk event, it underscored the need for organizations to reexamine and manage their supply chains to ensure business continuity and growth for the future. Joining Host Jonathan Betz are two industry specialists to discuss future strategies on how companies can maintain supply chain resilience and the lessons they've learned to help companies avoid disruptions, Chip Overby, Sr. VP Strategic Development of Old Dominion Freight Line, and Professor Jeffrey Bergstrand, Professor of Finance in the Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre Dame. Key Takeaways: Chip highlights the potential bottlenecks and issues, including labor, inflation, and weather, that affect the supply chain. [1:05] Will companies reconsider their offshoring strategies and overseas manufacturing practices? Professor Bergstrand discusses the myriad of uncertainties that abound in the industry and Chip offers up some statistics that may shape the future. [3:46] Chip describes the three key requirements for keeping domestic supply chains operating efficiently. [11:29] Professor Bergstrand shares an example of the liability of having a limited number of suppliers and the additional risk smaller suppliers face. [14:03] Both Professor Bergstrand and Chip weigh in on the critical requirements of labor, network, equipment, and technology to provide reliable on-time service to customers. [16:47] Professor Bergstrand describes the semiconductor issue, e-commerce trends, and the need for diversification in the supply chain. [20:43] Chip shares the operational technologies and planning tools Old Dominion invests in to maintain superior customer service and on-time deliveries. [25:19] Chip and Professor Bergstrand remark on how technologies and innovation will assist business leaders in developing strategies for business resilience in the future. [26:59]

Darden has re-launched its PhD program, and, in honor of the occasion, we are sharing interviews with Darden PhD program alums on the podcast. In this episode, we catch up with Kirsten Martin (MBA '99, PhD '06). Martin is the William P. and Hazel B. White Center Professor of Technology Ethics and a professor of IT, analytics, and operations in the Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre Dame. A nationally recognized expert in privacy, technology, and business ethics, she is the director of the Notre Dame Technology Ethics Center (ND TEC). In this next episode of the series #BoldFail, we meet Sam Miller. Sam is the head of the head of the entrepreneurship and innovation minor in the Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre Dame. Sam works with a variety of students from freshman to seniors and has experienced many different sides of the start-up process. #BoldFail is a celebration of strategic failure. No profitable startup or entrepreneur goes from success to success. All experience multiple challenges and failures along the way. Failure by itself is neutral, neither good nor bad. The question is: what did we learn from it? Failure in operations and failure that results from complexity can be prevented with proper processes, oversight, and care. But failure that comes from pushing beyond boundaries is a commendable, necessary step because it breaks new ground on the path to discovery. #BoldFail is a celebration of the mindset that sees the future, seizes opportunity and embraces failure as a routine step toward success, a chance to persevere or pivot rather than quit.

And so when we are thinking about how we as humans show up to moments or to environments, that really comes from our brain. STANDOUT QUOTES “I firmly believe that in order to win in the long term, to make and manifest the greatness inside of us, it's start with how we think.” -Dr. Amber Selking [02:57] “Here's the challenge that a lot of leaders and coaches face is that often inadvertently our communication styles shut people down. Because we're wired a certain way, so we don't process information the same way that our people or our players or our student athletes might, and so we shut them down.” -Dr. Amber Selking [04:12] “How can we as leaders and coaches actually adjust our communication style in ways that we know are meaningful to the men and women that we lead or that we serve as their coach, as their teacher, as their parent in ways again that can elicit that greatness inside of them?” -Dr. Amber Selking [12:23] “If we are aware of the fact that we are words of affirmation, it can help us not take things so personally sometimes.” -Dr. Amber Selking [16:03] Please get on iTunes to rate us and write a review for us!
