Keith and Glen join us for a lively conversation about reconnecting with music—this time through the lens of what some (including us!) might call a supergroup. These talented musicians have found harmony not only in their sound but also by creating space for each other's creative ideas, families, opinions, and lifestyles. Their band, Newbridge, delivers a powerful blend of Americana, folk, and roots-rock straight from Halifax, Nova Scotia. The lineup features Canadian music veterans Keith Maddison (Maddison Avenue), Glen Nicholson (In-Flight Safety), Jeff Mosher (The Mellotones, Matt Andersen), Warren Robert (Myles Goodwyn, Pogey), and Robbie Crowell (Sturgill Simpson, Deer Tick, Midland, Matt Mays)—each bringing a wealth of experience and a shared drive to craft a distinctive sound. The group's musical journey took them to Nashville, TN, where they recorded their debut album at the legendary Creative Workshop Studio (CWS), with production helmed by the multi-talented Robbie Crowell. Originally built in 1971, CWS has played host to icons like Emmylou Harris, Waylon Jennings, the Doobie Brothers, and Rod Stewart, and served as the setting for the influential music documentary Heartworn Highways. In this episode, the band reflects on their time in Nashville—complete with stories of Keith's kids as temporary roommates—and shares how mutual respect has been the secret ingredient to creating stellar new music. Expect plenty of laughs, insights, and captivating stories throughout this conversation! AUSTIN CONSIGLIEREOLD NO. 1 by Guy Clark (RCA, 1975)Guy Clark's farmhouse was ground zero for a whole generation of America's finest songwriters. Check out the scene in the “Outlaw Country” doc, Heartworn Highways, with the babyfaced Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell, and Guy harmonizing and trading songs and stories at the kitchen table. This was a summit meeting of Towne Van Zandt's Gospel spreaders keeping the flame of devotion burning- and Guy, Towne's best friend, was John the Baptist. Or, watch that David Letterman clip, 24 years later, with Guy, Jerry Jeff Walker, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Nanci Griffith, Steve, and Rodney standing up there like Mount Rushmore, singing “Desperadoes Waiting for a Train”, and you realize that the gospel seeds that had been spread in the 70's had flowered across the nation. Well, that signature song appears on this, Guy's debut album, and it's like encountering the Dead Sea Scrolls - the original rendition. Add to this the elegiac, definitive version of L.A. Freeway - the song Jerry Jeff made into a folk-rock hit - (with my high school buddy, Jon Simons on harp), and you begin to intuit that you're listening to history being made - and, oddly, it still sounds brand new.To quote the liner notes in Apple Music, a Guy Clark song…”isn't as loose as Walker, or as poetic as Townes Van Zandt, but his songs were the best built.” In 2006, this professional luthier put out the album “Workbench Songs” who's title characterizes his steady carpenter's hand. It was nominated for best Contemporary Folk/Americana Grammy. By this time the much covered consigliere of Austin was a universally acknowledged master and national treasure. In 2019 Steve Earle recorded an album of his mentor's songs and I made the pilgrimage to Amoeba Records to get my copy signed and my picture taken with the man who knew the man who wrote these songs.

Today is another episode of our summer special series recorded at the Pioneertown Film Festival back on Memorial day. I'm not going to lie, this was my favorite encounter of the festival because Graham Leader, my guest today, is the producer of a very important movie. Not just for me, but for a lot of musicians and fans of music around the world. In the late 70's, along with filmmaker James Szalapsky, he followed then-unknown artists who grew on to become legends in what we call the "Outlaw Country" world. Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, and Steve Earle are probably the most famous artists featured in the film. They were literally the misfits of Nashville music, they were not into Mainstream Nashville Country, they had something different to say and another music to showcase. Something real. At the time, the film did not do well at the box office. Because it didn't have any famous names attached to it, they had difficulty distributing it. To find a niche audience, the film had to wait until DVDs and Youtube appeared. And that's how I discovered it in the 2000's, through a Youtube clip. One scene in particular got me. It's a scene with Townes Van Zandt playing Waiting around to die. If you don't know the movie or any of those musicians, go check it now. I'm sure you'll want to see the whole movie after that. Because in the end, it's not just about music. Those people featured in the documentary, they touch heart. Almost an ethnographic document, Heartworn Highways portrays first and foremost an atypical, maybe a little dysfunctional, musical community, but with strong social values. http://www.sealionfilms.com/ www.hangingonsunset.com --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/hangingonsunset/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/hangingonsunset/support

El álbum …but i’d rather be with you, too. Escuchar audio

On this month's episode, I'm very happy to have my first guest with fellow Cicada Cinema co-founder and by far the most encyclopedic cinephile I've ever had the pleasure of calling my friend, Nile Arena! I decided I need some help talking about the mountain of movies Kino Lorber and Criterion sent over to me this month and he was more than happy to help. We get into a couple of hidden gems with the 1984 coming-of-age comedy written by a post-Fast Times at Ridgemont High Cameron Crowe, The Wild Life, and a nasty piece of British noir called Cast a Dark Shadow that comes as double feature with a similar film, Wanted for Murder. We finally wrap it up with a personal favorite of both of ours, Mel Brooks's directorial debut, The Producers. I also fly solo for a bit and get into what I love about Kino's most recent release of The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly and try and triangulate my thoughts about Olivier Assayas's Maggie Cheung vehicle Irma Vep. The format shifts once again, but the movies continue to be great. Give it a listen and hear for yourself. Also, you can find the reviews for five other films (Dynasty, The Man in Search of His Murderer, Heartworn Highways, Heartworn Highways Revisited, and Spaceballs) on the IU Cinema blog.

In the mid-‘70s, filmmaker James Szalapski traveled to Texas and Tennessee to capture the radical country artists reclaiming the genre through an appreciation for its heritage in folk and bluegrass and a rejection of the mainstream Nashville machine. The hard living – and hard partying – lifestyles of outlaw country’s figureheads are played out on screen in trailer homes, prisons and even a liquor-fueled Christmas gathering. It borrowed from rock, folk and bluegrass, with an edge that was missing from mainstream Nashville country. This newly-restored documentary, HEARTWORN HIGHWAY, includes rarely-captured performances of the aforementioned musicians as they perfected this then-new style and helped change the course of country music history by artists that include Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Rodney Crowell, Steve Young, David Allan Coe, and a 19-year-old Steve Earle and many others appear and perform. Musical highlights include Clark’s brilliant “Desperados Waiting For A Train'', Young's stirring “Alabama Highways” and Van Zandt’s emotional “Waiting Around To Die.” The hard living – and hard partying – lifestyles of outlaw country’s figureheads are played out on screen as we visit Van Zandt’s Austin trailer, see Coe play in Tennessee State Prison, join the gang in Nashville’s notorious Wig Wam Tavern and witness a liquor-fueled Christmas at Clark’s house. No wonder the film’s original tagline read: “The best music and the best whiskey come from the same part of the country”. Outside of a couple festival screenings, the movie remained unreleased for five years after its completion, finally hitting screens in 1981 and finding a cult audience ever since.” Heartworn Highways Producer Graham Leader joins us to talk about the groundbreaking artists he and director / writer / cinematographer James Szalapski were able to wrangle into participating as well as the long and winding road this fabled film has taken over the last 44 years. The Light In The Attic Podcast: Stories Behind The Music

Once in a blue moon, a filmmaker hits record at precisely the right moment to capture lightning in a bottle. It happened in '76 with music doc 'Heartworn Highways,' which follows key players in the outlaw country music of the 1970s. Emboldened by the radical 60s, country musicians in Tennessee and Texas rejected the commercial “Nashville sound” and returned country music to its rougher honky-tonk roots. This episode of The Light In The Attic Podcast goes behind the scenes of our reissue of the soundtrack to this cult classic documentary that captured Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, Jerry Jeff Walker, David Allan Coe, Steve Young, Steve Earle and many others before they hit it real big. Time for episode 8 of See Hear, the podcast that discusses music-related films.   This time around, we discuss the 1976 documentary about the Outlaw Country movement, Heartworn Highways directed by James Szalapski.  There’s no narration or talking heads to describe a development in country music. Appropriately, it’s a series of scenes mainly featuring emerging singer songwriters  of the time (Guy Clark, Townes van Zandt, Rodney Crowell) performing their songs, and discussing ordinary details of their lives – just like the construction of their songs. The film is a mood piece and despite being about ordinary details, the film itself is anything but. If you don’t feel moved watching TVZ singing “Waiting Around To Die”, check your pulse.   Unfortunately, Tim and Wendi were not available, but Sticky and I were joined by the wonderful  and knowledgeable Dave Mclemore (aka Davey Mac) who kindly shared his wealth of knowledge and passion for this film with us.
