Norwegian guitarist and composer Hedvig Mollestad joins us for an in-depth conversation about the Hedvig Mollestad Trio's latest album, Bees in the Bonnet (out May 9 via Rune Grammofon). We discuss the trio's origins, their approach to composition and improvisation, and how this new LP fits into their ever-evolving sonic journey. From the heavy jazz-rock fusion that defines their sound to the progressive and psychedelic influences that shape their latest release, Hedvig shares insights into the creative process and the band's trajectory over the years.

At a time when music producers have been seriously entertaining the thought of promoting one minute-long songs to deal with the short attention span of today's online music listeners, we want to celebrate musicians who are unfazed by this trend, and instead they follow their internal muse. At the top of the hour the remarkable new album by Loren Stillman. The playlist features also Trickster and Hedvig Mollestad Weejuns.
A Absències recordem a Jane Birkin. God lytt! Norwegian guitarist/composer Hedvig Mollestad has fronted her own acclaimed power-trio with bassist Ellen Brekken and drummer Ivar Loe Bjørnstad for the best part of this decade. Her new album, however, finds her performing her sweeping brand of progressive jazz-rock with a loosely-configured sextet. Documenting a performance from 2018, Tempest Revisited was conceived as a hymn to her birthplace of Alesund, Norway, and takes cues from the weather and the natural world at large. It was unveiled for the anniversary of the opening of Parken, a cultural house in Alesund. (A new album by her trio, Ding Dong. You're Dead was also released earlier this year.) --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jazziz/support

This week we put together an energy-packed playlist to boost us towards the finishing line of the winter season. At the heart of the show is electric jazz, from a rather guitar-centric set of bands. They oscillate between the shredding power of Hedvig Mollestad or Marbin, and the legacy of the New York Downtown scene that has started emerging from the vaults of Wayne Horvitz and has echoes coming back to us from across the world: exhibit A the Belgian band Echoes of Zoo; exhibit B: French drummer Anne Pacéo's project Circles. A second taste of two current favorites, the Pino Palladino - Blake Mills collaboration and the Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio, Chris Potter's compelling one-man-show, the intricate philigrane of Shijin and Tamil Rogeon's electro-spiritual jazz adventures complete this journey in our stashes of new and upcoming releases. Detailed playlist at https://spinitron.com/RFB/pl/12724697/Mondo-Jazz (up to Tamil Rogeon). Happy listening! Photo credit: Arve-Kjersheim

Young Southpaw talks to phenomenal Norwegian guitarist Hedvig Mollestad about her new record Ekhidna, opening for John McLaughlin while six months pregnant and having just had appendix surgery, snakes, Eddie Van Halen, Alex Lifeson, and much more. https://soundcloud.com/hedvigmollestadtrio Hedvig Mollestad: How do you feel about John McLaughlin’s way through music, his career, where he started and where he is now Young Southpaw: I listened to that new record he put out a couple months ago, I enjoyed it. My favourite stuff of John McLaughlin’s are those Miles Albums, those electric Miles albums. A Tribute To Jack Johnson, I could listen to that forever. Just wonderful playing. And of course Bitches Brew and Live/Evil and all those. That for me is my favourite type of music. HM: Live/Evil and Bitches Brew to me also is just, that’s just the defining what you have to try to avoid, because you can never be close to how good those records are. So if you play that kind of music it’s really hard to avoid those references. It’s really really really hard because you can never be that good. And still it’s so fun when you get into that kind of place with musicians. Absolutely. Something I found fascinating with John McLaughlin because he is just a machine, like his technique, talking about fast but he has his own way of playing fast. It’s very accentuated, in a very pentatonic-based position. But suddenly it’s not. And I’ve been thinking, because the Mahavishnu records has this thing that is something that I’m still listening to when I listen to them, that is the guitar sound. It’s wrenching, and it’s roaring, and it’s in your - it’s almost inside your face, because it’s so close. To me, that is one of the things that I really cherish. ...... HM: The Antilone riff is very jumpy YS: It’s like a frantic boogie. And the opening, my first thought was AC/DC’s ‘Thunderstruck’. HM: Yeah. I love AC/DC, really love them. Yes, that is a great reference, and also the Black Sabbath opening. The rain and the thunder. That’s fantastic, I love that reference. Putting on a jazz record in 2020 and saying ‘ah, I hear AC/DC in this jazz-rock’, that is a goal achieved. Thank you so much.

Phil Freeman talks to Rune Grammofon label owner Rune Kristoffersen and four of the label's artists: vocalist/composer Maja Ratkje, saxophonist Mats Gustafsson, Motorpsycho bassist Bent Saether, and guitarist Hedvig Mollestad.
The final Burning Ambulance podcast of 2018 is a very special episode. Back in May, I went to Norway for the Nutshell jazz showcase and interviewed several Norwegian jazz artists – that was in episode 19. And just a couple of weeks ago, at the end of November, I went back to Norway, for the 20th anniversary of the Rune Grammofon label. Rune Grammofon is a fantastic label that has put out albums by Motorpsycho, Supersilent, Arve Henriksen, Bushman’s Revenge, Elephant9, Fire!, Maja Ratkje, the Espen Eriksen Trio, the Hedvig Mollestad Trio and many, many others. To celebrate their 20th anniversary, the founder and label owner, Rune Kristoffersen, booked two nights of shows at National Jazz scene, a club in Oslo. The first night featured Maja Ratkje and Motorpsycho, and the second night featured Fire! and the Hedvig Mollestad Trio. And I was one of the foreign journalists invited to come over and see the shows, because I’ve been a supporter of the label for a long time – I’ve reviewed their releases for The Wire and for Burning Ambulance, I interviewed Arve Henriksen for a cover story back when BA had a print magazine, et cetera, et cetera. I wrote a review of the concerts for Down Beat, which you can read on their website, and while I was in Oslo I interviewed Rune, Maja, Bent Saether from Motorpsycho, Mats Gustafsson from Fire!, and Hedvig Mollestad, and you’ll hear all of those conversations, as well as music from each of them, in this episode. Here's a list of the music you'll hear in this episode: Motorpsycho, "Ship of Fools" (The Tower) Fire!, "The Hands" (The Hands) Maja Ratkje, "Trio" (Voice) Motorpsycho, "Manmower" (Roadwork Vol. 5) Fire!, "Up and Down" (The Hands) Hedvig Mollestad Trio, "First Thing to Pop is the Eye" (Smells Funny) Sky Music, "Chaser" (A Tribute to Terje Rypdal)
