Mandy Crater, executive director of HomeAid Georgia, joins host Carol Morgan on this week's Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio episode. In this podcast episode, Crater discusses the HomeAid Georgia Essentials Drive and how home builders, trade partners and individuals can get involved. This year's drive expands beyond metro Atlanta to include Athens and midwest Georgia as well. “Most folks don't realize that the average age of a person experiencing homelessness, pretty much nationwide, is about nine years old,” said Crater. “That means there's a lot of babies in that mix too, and so about a little over 12,000 people on any given night are experiencing homelessness, and about 38% of those are moms and children of all ages.” HomeAid Georgia's 24th Annual Essentials Drive HomeAid Georgia has been closing the gap on statewide homelessness since 2001, working alongside local trade partners to provide housing for those in need. While its trade partners cover a lot of the residential needs of these individuals, there are items that mothers need that aren't covered by any state program, such as diapers, baby wipes and feminine hygiene products. The Essentials Drive is key to alleviating that financial burden by offering moms these household essentials free through local nonprofits. This year, HomeAid Georgia and its partners are collecting donations from April 1 to 30. Visit www.homeaidatlanta.org/essentials-drive to find a list of donation drop-off sites accepting donations of diapers and baby wipes from April 1 – April 30. Items that are collected need to be dropped off at the Greater Atlanta HBA on Wednesday, May 7. Volunteers will sort items at the HBA on Thursday, May 8. And items will be delivered to the service providers on May 9, just in time for Mother's Day! What items are needed? Wipes are always requested due to their versatility. From freshening up during a diaper change or cleaning sticky toddler fingers, wipes are the gift that keeps on giving! Crater also points out that diapers, especially Pull-Ups, are a hot commodity at the non-profits HomeAid works with. The Essentials Drive provides mothers with the basics, enabling them to feel stable and make informed choices that support not only their children but also themselves. Donations should be new and in original packaging: Diapers (All Sizes & Pull-Ups) Unscented Baby Wipes Feminine Hygiene Products Adult Diapers Monetary donations (click the Donate button on the website) If you can't make a physical donation, the Amazon and Target wish-lists are a great way to make a difference and ship directly to HomeAid Georgia. More Than “Just the Essentials” In addition to offering mothers a bundle of resources, the nonprofit partners that HomeAid Georgia works with counsel these women to find the "why” behind their homelessness and help them move forward from its grasp. From parenting classes to budgeting assistance, they provide more than just the essentials; they also offer a supportive system to help these women achieve their goals. Crater said, “They really get at the root of ‘What was the issue that caused you and your family, your baby, to experience homelessness, and how do we solve that issue?'” Get Involved in the Essentials Drive Want to get involved this year? Volunteers can reach out to HomeAid Georgia through its website to assist with sorting, drop-offs and more. Crater says that HomeAid often doesn't know what to expect until donations start arriving on May 7, so it's always better to have more hands available. “When you show up with a load of diapers at a nonprofit, they're so happy to have you, and they're just so excited, and they're smiling and it's a great feeling,” said Crater. “I've had volunteers tell me over and over again that the best part is that they get to really see the results of the drive and who they're helping.” HomeAid Georgia would like to thank its 2025 Essentials Drive partners: Academy Mortgage

Mandy Crater, executive director of the HomeAid® Atlanta and Ronnie Cline, vice president of construction with Taylor Morrison, join host Carol Morgan for this week's Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio episode. In this podcast segment, Crater and Cline discuss what it means to be a Builder Captain for HomeAid® Atlanta and volunteering as a home builder. Since 2001, HomeAid® Atlanta has worked to build new lives for individuals experiencing homelessness. The organization has completed over 200 construction projects and continues to make a difference through construction, community engagement and education. In partnership with local homebuilders like Taylor Morrison and nonprofit housing providers, HomeAid® Atlanta provides stable places for individuals or families to stay. “We get discounts and donations from our friends in the building industry and help our friends that are in the housing industry use those discounted donations to improve their facilities, to expand, to maybe just do some maintenance,” said Crater. “So, then they are spending their hard-earned money on the people that they're trying to help.” Taylor Morrison is currently partnering with HomeAid® Atlanta on two projects, Breakthrough House and a project in Cherokee County for girls in foster care. Breakthrough House is comprised of two sections: one for single women transitioning into sobriety and the second for recovering mothers and their children. Up in Cherokee County, Taylor Morrison and HomeAid® Atlanta plan to construct a place for family visitations, donation drop-offs and more, further enhancing the security of the campus. As a top five national builder, Taylor Morrison is a great resource for building quality homes that last for those in need and is a proud Builder Captain. “Taylor Morrison is very supportive of everything that we do with HomeAid ® and what it brings to the community, but it is a huge responsibility,” said Cline. “The great thing is, our trade partners out there really work with us side by side, and the relationships that we build over time are unreal, and their generosity is great. They contribute a lot to these projects, and the relationships that they build with those that we're helping last a lifetime.” For many projects, including HomeAid® Atlanta builds, Taylor Morrison calls on its own trade partners. Cline describes it as “team building” when the construction company and its trade partners collaborate on projects off the clock. “Generally, we'll have multiple trades in every area, and I've never had one not want to help,” said Cline. “Usually, they want to do a lot more than what we're even asking them to do. Our trade partners are huge to us and our business. We can't do it without them, and for what we do with HomeAid®, they really contribute a lot.” How does the HomeAid® process work financially? Non-profits are invited to fill out an application but must have at least 75% of the project cost in the bank. For a $100,000 project, that means $75,000 is secured. The goal when bringing in Building Captains and their trade partners is to get the cost down further. If the project can be completed for 50% less than expected, the rest of the money can go towards maintenance, furnishing the space or back to the bank for another project. “That's their skin in the game because this is their facility,” said Crater. “We're just helping them to make it nicer or even constructed in the first place, and then they have a space where they can do their work and help people move forward with their lives.” How can you get involved? Well, that is easy! Builders can volunteer as a HomeAid Builder Captain to lead the construction of a housing facility or get involved with a one-day, hands-on project. Taking on a build project with HomeAid Atlanta is the perfect opportunity to do what you do best - build homes! Tune in to the full interview above to learn more about HomeAid® Atlanta and Taylor Morrison, or visit www.HomeAidGA.

Executive Director Mandy Crater with HomeAid Atlanta joins the Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio podcast to discuss this year's Essentials Drive and how people can get more involved with the organization. Crater sits down with the President of Denim Marketing and Host Carol Morgan. Celebrating nine years with HomeAid Atlanta, Crater has an impressive and varied work history! She received a degree in Public Relations in her undergraduate program and then transitioned to the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association (HBA). After moving around a little, she ended up working for the designed charity of the organization that continues to receive generous support from the HBA. Crater said, “I'm happy to be celebrating a milestone coming up. I'm not quite a decade, but pretty close!” A constant presence in the Atlanta market, HomeAid Atlanta has been impacting lives across the metro area for over 22 years. The organization's mission is to build new lives for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness through construction, community engagement and education. By partnering with friends in the building industry, HomeAid Atlanta receives discounts and donations for nonprofit housing service providers needing construction projects. Whether it's an organization helping veterans experiencing homelessness that needs maintenance or an eight-unit apartment building for mothers and children, HomeAid Atlanta aims to assist in any way it can. Crater said, “The builders themselves came up with it back in 1989 in Southern California [after] seeing the need and saying ‘what do we do? How do we solve this problem? Because it's our job to build houses.'” Around 23 years ago, the organization noticed that a lot of other businesses they partner with have mothers and children in need of necessities. There was also an additional need for volunteer opportunities. While many people may struggle to volunteer on project sites, anyone can donate diapers. The organization realized there was more to learn about the work they were completing. There was a need for a support system as well as revitalization. While the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) exists to combat food insecurity, there is no system for essential items such as diapers and wipes. Every child costs around $80 for diapers, which is a lot to consider, along with lodging and food. Each year, before Mother's Day, HomeAid Atlanta collects as many diapers and wipes as possible to deliver to the organization's friends on the Friday before the holiday. Running now until April 31, HomeAid Atlanta is asking for donations of diapers, wipes, feminine hygiene products, and adult diapers. The organization also has registries on Target and Amazon under HomeAid Atlanta. All donations can be dropped off at any SouthState Bank location across metro Atlanta and any location listed on the Drop Off Map on the HomeAid Atlanta website. If you would like to host a drop-off spot, please get in touch with the HomeAid Atlanta team to be added to the map. Executive Director Mandy Crater with HomeAid Atlanta joins the Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio podcast to discuss volunteer and support opportunities, including the Essentials Drive. Crater joins host Carol Morgan on the All About Real Estate segment. Starting her career with HomeAid Atlanta in April 2015, Crater has been with the organization for eight years. HomeAid first appeared in the Atlanta market in 2001 and has made an incredible impact on the community with the mission to build lives for families and individuals experiencing or at risk of homelessness through construction, education and community outreach. Working with existing non-profits that provide housing for the homeless, HomeAid Atlanta receives discounts and donations from the building industry when non-profit partners have construction needs. With the average age of individuals experiencing homelessness in metro Atlanta being around nine years, several mothers, children and babies are in difficult living situations. Crater said, “It's about $80 per baby for diapers (a month).” For over 20 years, HomeAid Atlanta has hosted the Essentials Drive to help provide essentials for those in need. Throughout April, the organization collects diapers and wipes to distribute to non-profit partners serving mothers and babies experiencing or at risk of homelessness. UPS delivers the essentials to those in need the Friday before Mother's Day. Unlike snap benefits and food stamps, wipes and diapers are not supported by any safety net. On the HomeAid Atlanta website, prospective participants can find a map displaying each drop-off location. The organization offers additional opportunities for others to collect internally with co-workers and options for public-facing intuitions, such as banks, grocery stores and churches, to become public collection sites. The drive ends on May 10 and all donations will be sorted on May 12 for distribution. Crater said, “We are getting back to the way we used to do things before 2020…there is a lot more personal touch involved and more people hosting collection sites that didn't in the past.” For individuals who live out of state or cannot visit a collection site, other ways of contributing include financial donations and purchasing from organization registries. Registries can be found on Amazon and Target under the first name HomeAid and last name Atlanta. To donate financially, visit the HomeAid Atlanta website, search for the ‘Donate Now' button and specify essentials. The organization can fill donation gaps with monetary donations after the last drop-off day. To learn more about HomeAid Atlanta, tune in to the full interview above or visit www.HomeAidAtlanta.org. Executive Director of HomeAid Atlanta Mandy Crater is in the studio for today's Around Atlanta segment of Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio. Joined by co-hosts Carol Morgan and Todd Schnick, the group discusses their annual Essentials Drive, 20th anniversary, upcoming projects and more. HomeAid Atlanta's mission is to build new lives for families and individuals experiencing homelessness in the metro Atlanta area. In its efforts to build lives for those experiencing homelessness, HomeAid builds, renovates and maintains facilities for organizations that provide shelter and programs for the homeless population in Atlanta. “A good portion of the people experiencing homelessness in metro Atlanta, which on any given night could be 5,500 people, are women and children, or about 40%,” said Crater. “There are a lot of people out there who need our help and we're actually concerned, that on the tail end of the pandemic, it might get worse. To help these people in need, HomeAid Atlanta is hosting its 20th Annual Essentials Drive. Taking place from April 1 to May 5, 2021, the fundraiser is HomeAid's annual community-wide drive held to collect “essentials” for families with infants and toddlers who are experiencing homelessness. Essential items include diapers, baby wipes and more. Since 2002, HomeAid Atlanta's Essentials Drive has collected over 1,350,000 essential baby items, assisting hundreds of moms and babies in the metro Atlanta area. Diapers and wipes are not only extremely expensive for families in need but are also hard to come by through assisted programs. No state or federal child safety-net program allocates dollars specifically for the purchase of diapers. With babies needing changing up to 12 times a day, the estimated cost for diapers is $70 to $80 a month per infant. The annual Essentials Drive helps to gather up these necessary items and provide them to women and children who are experiencing homelessness in Atlanta. This April, HomeAid Atlanta invites you to help metro Atlanta mothers and children by joining the 20th Annual Essentials Drive. There are many ways to get involved: Host an Essentials Drive drop-off site at your place of business (open to the public) Coordinate a drive among your friends and coworkers at your office, church, school, or civic organization Donate unopened packages of diapers and wipes in person or online via HomeAid registries at Target and Amazon Donate gift cards Volunteer to sort, count, and pack donations Sponsor the Essentials Drive In addition to the ongoing Essentials Drive this April and May, HomeAid Atlanta is also excited to celebrate its 20th anniversary! To help commemorate this milestone year, the organization is hosting a big party at Brand Vaughn Lumber. This is a spacious 3,300 square foot-warehouse with big roll-up doors to allow for plenty of airflow and proper social distancing. There will be a band, food and drinks to help celebrate the organization and the thousands of lives improved by the impactful nonprofit organization. Executive Director of HomeAid Atlanta Mandy Crater is in studio for today's episode of Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio. Joined by co-hosts Carol Morgan and Todd Schnick, the group discusses HomeAid Atlanta initiatives to help the homeless community, the mission that guides its community outreach the ongoing Essentials Drive ending soon. Crater recently celebrated her fifth anniversary with HomeAid Atlanta in April and is excited to continue her important work with the organization. Crater has been in the homebuilding industry for most of her life, starting her career working with the Greater Atlanta Homebuilders Association and moving on to the construction industry after that. In addition to her role as Executive Director at HomeAid Atlanta, Crater is also a proud mom of two children. HomeAid Atlanta's mission is to build new lives for homeless families and individuals through housing and community outreach. The organization and its supporters achieve this through several different approaches. One of the main ways HomeAid Atlanta helps end homelessness in the area is partnering with professionals in the building industry to identify nonprofits that build houses and provide resources for homeless people in the greater Atlanta area. “We put the builders together with the nonprofits that are helping people to get into stable housing,” said Crater. “We get discounts, donation and expertise to help those nonprofits build whatever they need to expand their capacity, do more outreach and more. We are all working together to get people into stable housing. It's a great way for builders to give back to the community.” Part of the HomeAid Atlanta mission focuses on community outreach. That is why every year before Mother's Day, the organization hosts its annual Essentials Drive. The Essentials Drive is a community-wide drive to collect diapers and wipes. About 40% of individuals experiencing homelessness in the Atlanta area are mothers, many of whom have young babies. This drive is focused on helping these homeless mothers and babies who don't have other safety nets or support organizations to fall back on in their time of need. This year, the Essentials Drive is running a little different than normal in response to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic. HomeAid Atlanta created individual shopping lists for all of its nonprofit partners who are ready to help moms and babies. It also recruited Amazon to help with the deliveries to continue practicing social distancing and self-isolation protocols. Everyone who wants to help can use Amazon Smile to donate essential supplies can do so online. So far, eight out of 23 service providers have their needs met. This means there are several nonprofit partners with shopping lists uncomplete. To help ensure everything on the list gets purchased and delivered to the homeless moms in the Atlanta area in time for Mother's Day, be sure to check out the full list of HomeAid's service partners. Visit the link here to view the list and find their clickable links to individual shopping wish lists. After selecting the items to put in the cart, visit smile.amazon.com and select HomeAid Atlanta, Inc. as the charity of choice. After paying for the items, be sure to invite others to donate and take part in providing mothers and babies with the items they need and deserve. To find out more about any of the ways to help in the 2020 Essentials Drive, listen to the full interview above.
