Podcast Summary Dr. Drumm McNaughton interviews Jaime Casap, a consultant and Google's former education evangelist, about how higher education needs to create a new model that will help students embrace lifelong learning and succeed in the emerging economy. Podcast Highlights Students who come from low-socioeconomic circumstances, immigrant families or are the first in their family to attend college often don't have a good understanding of the educational opportunities that are available to them. A new model of education should help students define who they are and what they're passionate about, and then expose them to different disciplines and experts from around the world. Students and higher education institutions both need to embrace the concept of lifelong learning. Therefore, the finite four-year education should no longer be the norm. Instead, educational opportunities should be created to meet the person's various needs throughout both a career and life. In what ways are we serving all students in all schools? What does social justice look like in pedagogy? Mary and Danielle are digging into those questions with Dr. Gholnecsar “Gholdy” Muhammad on this episode of 3Ps in a Pod. Dr. Muhammad breaks down the four-layered framework as goals for time spent in teaching and learning. She calls us to think about how we can unearth truth and knowledge and not just accept what we think we know. She also calls us to think about how we can leverage criticality and consciousness to provide meaningful and artistically crafted units of study for our students. You can hear more from Dr. Muhammad at the 16th Annual Teacher Leadership Institute: Where Curiosity and Leadership Unite online this summer where she will be leading general sessions along with Trevor MacKenzie and Jaime Casap. What is teacher-led inquiry? What is student-led inquiry? How do they interact? We’re digging into those questions with educators and inquirers Kass Minor and Trevor MacKenzie on this episode of 3Ps in a Pod. Minor and MacKenzie break down the broad concept of inquiry into what it means for educators, leaders, and students day to day and how it intersects with conversations about equity and social justice. Minor and MacKenzie talk both about the ideas involved in approaching life and teaching with an inquiry stance and specific examples of that mindset in action. 3Ps hosts Angelia and Mary also share how they integrate inquiry into their work in the classroom and otherwise. Jaime and my second conversation is enjoyable and challenging. It was different than usual because for whatever reason we're talking about views on environment, personal action, education, and so on, but I didn't get to the personal challenge I like to.It was enjoyable because we're both into it for exchange, education, and understanding. Challenging because we have to figure out where the other is coming from. We start this conversation where we ended the last one, which is each putting forward his view. Getting and understanding another's view takes time, especially while trying to make yours available for the other to get and understand. Probably a third party will get and understand both faster and easier than either party. We end up at what will be a starting point for a third conversation. Reaching there, I suspect we'll say things that you've heard before---I'm sure he and I have both heard most of the other's view but not talked it through. Most of the conversation I felt he was asking what people were doing to point out its futility. Maybe he was, maybe he wasn't, but at the close I thought he was actually asking. As I said, I think there are scales of disaster and we can avoid the worst. Actually, I think everything we do can decrease suffering forothers.Anyway, I think we'll start next time with talking strategy. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

For the past 14 years, Jaime Casap has been the Chief Education Evangelist for Google. He recently left that position, and like many of us, Jaime is now on the path to figuring out what he’s going to do next. Jaime and Amy Jo discuss the Why Not Now? moment that led him to Google; a moment that took him from New York to Arizona with only $40 in his pocket. Jaime’s main focus is on education, and he shares the question he believes we should be asking rather than “what do you want to be when you grow up?” He also discusses how changing your view of learning from a process to a mindset can greatly help you along the path of finding what you want to do in life. You’ll also get to hear Jaime’s ingenious inbox trick he uses when going on vacation to keep from coming back to thousands of emails. He gives tips on how to design your own day and how to rethink the idea of “work/life balance” so you can just simply live life. Part 2 of our discussion with educational pioneer Jaime Casap (check out Part 1 here) begins with a celebration of math as life, rather than a mere textbook full of static equations and formulas. We also continue our discussion of collaborative education, which gets so meta that Jeff and Jaime actually collaborate to finish saying a word! Jaime also discusses the unique joys and challenges of having kids aged 27, 19, and 5, and the vastly different fatherhood experience of each, and how solo days with his youngest, making up stories and talking about space travel, are so great way for jumpstarting creativity.
Our guest Jaime Casap thinks one of the worst things you can ask a kid is "What do you want to be when you grow up?" It's an outdated question that confines a person's impact too specifically. The better questions is: "What problem do you want to solve?" After 14 years at Google, most recently as its Global Education Evangelist, Jaime has several problems he plans to confront head-on. How can we make education more collaborative among students? How has the COVID-19 pandemic exposed the frailties and inequities of our current system, and how can an expanded role of technology help correct them? And why haven't more people with his background achieved the status he has?
“Don’t ask kids what they want to be when they grow up. Ask them what problem they want to solve.”Jaime explains what his title of Google's "Education Evangelist" means, how he got it, and how it results in him advancing education globally. We talk about education when student-driven, how that paradigm differs from what nearly all schools now do. Also how it is everywhere in life.He gives an insider's view of Google, how it reacted and transitioned from the pandemic, physically on the inside of its buildings. The most exciting part of the conversation comes at the end, when our conflicting views on the environment, the future, and technology build to a crescendo of disagreement, but also curiosity, but not checkmating each other. It's difficult to stop a conversation in the middle, so sorry you'll have to wait for our next conversation, but we've scheduled it.Disagreement happens any time two people's values differ, which means between any two people. I loved that we knew points of disagreement but instead of trying to defeat each other, we learned.I talk to a lot of people with similar views to what he expressed, but my experience so far has been that they are closed to other views. I suspect they see that resistance in me, I can't tell. With Jaime I felt we were looking for understanding the other's view, which I value. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Today's guest is Jaime Casap, Chief Education Evangelist at Google. Jaime helped launch G-Suite and other applications in schools, and he sincerely believes that education can disrupt poverty and transform lives. In this episode, Jaime talks about what Google's doing that didn't seem possible five years ago, why he thinks the customer is always wrong, why “What do you want to be when you grow up?” is the wrong question, and how companies should prepare for the arrival of Generation Z.
Today on the show I have Jaime Casap, Google’s Chief Education Evangelist and lead advocate of the problem-solving generation. Jaime credits his less-than opportune upbringing and his luck in education for his current position. He wants to share his “luck” with other students just like him so that this generation of students are best prepared to lead and succeed. Jaime and I chat about everything from teaching above the test and measuring abstract metrics, to finding ways to inspire educators and helping them realize the role of technology in today’s classroom. We both feel very passionately about giving students the opportunity to be measured on their ability to collaborate, problem-solve, and think critically rather than fill in bubbles on a test. One of his most important and personal goals is to teach educators how best to speak to children and young adults in situations of poverty. He’s co-written a book called Our First Talk About Poverty and has created a YouTube channel where he creates videos designed to inspire the next generation to action no matter their circumstances. This episode was chock-full of fantastic advice, passionate opinions, and actionable steps for creating a more collaborative classroom. Listen in and prepare to be inspired.. At ASU-GSV Summit 2017, we interviewed Jaime Casap, Chief Education Evangelist at Google for Education.
Even as digital technology has grown more sophisticated, accessible, and integral to our lives, social inequality has cast a deeper shadow across the United States in recent decades. Getting a quality education has become ever more essential for individual success and fulfillment. But can tech-enhanced education help break down—or perhaps even erase—our widening social divisions? That question was unpacked by a panel at a Zócalo/Arizona State University event titled “Can Digital Learning Dismantle the American Class System?” at the National Center for the Preservation of Democracy in Little Tokyo in downtown Los Angeles. Moderator Goldie Blumenstyk, senior writer for The Chronicle of Higher Education, was joined by retired superintendent of the Coachella Valley Unified School District Darryl Adams, college provost at the University of Maryland University College Marie Cini, Arizona State University president Michael Crow, and Google chief education evangelist Jaime Casap to discuss how digital education can create connectivity and opportunities for people across social classes.
Jaime Casap, Chief Evangelist at Google, shares his thoughts with Tom about inquiry-based learning, technology in education, bridging the digital divide and how a boy who grew up on welfare in Hell's Kitchen was able to beat the odds and succeed as an education leader.

With Amazon making its first big education platform debut in years, we were wondering: how are other blue chip companies—Microsoft, Apple, Google—reacting to this news? While at ISTE, Mary Jo and former EdSurge podcaster Michael Winters hosted an in-person taping of the EdSurge On Air podcast with a live audience and two Google leaders, Jonathan Rochelle and Jaime Casap. Rochelle and Casap both have a long history with the Google for Education team. Casap is a Google Education evangelist, and Rochelle is a Google Education Product Manager, not to mention a co-founder of Google Drive. Between the two of them, they have more than 20 years of experience with the search company. We asked both Casap and Rochelle about their thoughts on Amazon Inspire, where Google Education plans to grow, and why conferences seem so homogenous. By the way, in each of our interviews, we decided to play a little game. Since edtech buzzwords drive us crazy, we had a secret word that the interviewees didn’t know about, and if they said it out loud, our audience hit the buzzer. See if you can hear when it gets said during this interview!
Drew Perkins talks with Jaime Casap, Google's Chief Education Evangelist, about the impact Google has made on the future of learning and what he sees as the important next steps.

Today's Quote Is From Jaime Casap Click Below to Listen to Today's Show Don't ask kids what they want to be when they grow up but what problems do they want to solve. This changes the conversation from who do I want to work for, to what do I need to learn to be able to do that. ~ Jaime Casap, Google Global Education Evangelist When I saw this posted on LinkedIn, I was amazed at the thought in this quote. I completely agree with Jaime Casap on this. We are still training our kids to think about what they want to be not necessarily what they can do when they grow up. I often say this about myself. "I don't know what I want to be when I grow up." I am not sure what I want to do to make a living or what job I want to do. But as I learn more about life and about being successful, the more I learn that to be successful I must be able to solve peoples problems. That should be what we teach our kids. What are the problems of people? How can we solve those problems. So, instead of asking our kids, and ourselves as well, what we want to be when we grow up, As them What problems to they / I want to solve. Go Out Today, Find a Problem to Solve, Teach Your Kids to Ask What Problem Can They Solve and Go Solve Them I want to help you get the goals you set and make this year the best your ever for you.
