When teachers are first exposed to generative artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT, it's easy for them to identify potential concerns. Will the AI do all the work for students? Will students use it to cheat? Will students lose the ability to be creative and think critically because the AI can do those things for them? Our guest, Carl Hooker, believes we can strike the proper balance and keep the human at the heart of learning, even with AI in the equation. He says, “I like the idea of keeping the human in the center. AI is the assistant. AI is the feedback. AI is the tutor, the thought partner, but it's not the learner. The learner is still the most important part.” He adds, “Human compassion will never surpass artificial intelligence.” Join us as we talk to Carl about his new book, Learning Evolution: The New Era of AI in the Classroom, and explore practical ways that students, teachers, and systems can adapt to the changes brought to the learning process by AI. Visit AVID Open Access to learn more.

In our latest podcast episode, we talk with Carl Hooker about his desire to see K-12 education become more like the 1989 movie Dead Poet’s Society. He believes we have the potential engage students to learn in unorthodox ways and to inspire them to pursue their dreams – right now more than ever during this unusual time in education. As the former Director of Innovation & Digital Learning for the Eanes Independent School District, Carl shares a mix of practical tools and ideas that educators can immediately implement. From his start as a teacher, to his current district technology leadership, he’s always had one common belief: students should drive their own learning. Through a unique blend of technical expertise, educational experience, and flexibility, he believes districts have the potential to not only support students where they are, but to broaden their horizons and change their lives. Carl helped spearhead the Learning and Engaging through Access and Personalization (LEAP), and he has been a part of a strong educational shift with technology integration since becoming an educator. In this episode, Carl shares his perspective on how the pandemic has shifted the need to support students, parents, and families in a different way, including the three keys to districts who are succeeding with digital learning right now.

Welcome to episode 88 of the EdTech Situation Room from March 13, 2018, where technology news meets educational analysis. This week special guest Jennifer Carey (@TheJenCarey) and Wes Fryer (@wfryer) discussed the admirable way Florida teens have used social media to advocate for political change following the Parkland school shooting, how we can help curb trolling and harassment on Twitter by reporting it when we see it, and how YouTube seems coded to be a radicalizing influence through its recommendation engine. Social media analysis continued with discussion about a recent Wired article highlighting how Russia's "abuse" of Facebook during the 2016 elections essentially constituted an adept use of the platform as it's been designed to serve advertisers through micro-targeting, and the ways "the smartphone has become the new bogeyman" for many parents decrying the ills of social media much like parents blaming television watching in the 1980s. The need for expanded digital citizenship conversations at school to include "digital hygiene" including a focus on password managers and two-step verification was discussed, as well as the solution to a recent mystery involving laughing Amazon Alexa smart assistants. A discussion about Apple's emphasis on privacy but lagging innovation with artificial intelligence and Siri rounded out the discussion, including rumors of a new (and less expensive) MacBook Air laptop coming in the second quarter. Geeks of the week included a discounted laser cutter from Glowforge, Gaggle's Safety Management service, Slack for team messaging, the new Google Sites, and amazing augmented reality examples from the New York Times featuring Olympic athletes. Check out our full list of links on edtechsr.com/links, and be sure to follow us on Twitter for show updates @edtechSR. Next week special guest Carl Hooker (@mrhooker) will join Wes at our regular show time (9 pm central on Wednesday) as Jason Neiffer continues to hunker down and finish his dissertation this month. Special Episode! This weekend I am at the ASTE Conference, and I had the privilege of learning from Carl Hooker for a leadership workshop all day on Saturday. It’s always fun to learn from a great presenter, and Carl is one of those. Carl did a great job of engaging a bunch of administrators, helping us get our guard down, and making the conversation great. Carl has been involved in education since graduating from the University of Texas in 1998. He has been in a variety of positions in both Austin ISD and Eanes ISD, from 1st grade teacher to Virtualization Coordinator.  He’s a father of three girls, Sophia, Lauren, and Caroline and a wonderful, understanding wife Renee, all of which play a large role in any presentations he gives or blogs he writes. Carl is the Director of Innovation & Digital Learning in the Eanes Independent School District. He is also the founder of the learning festival called iPadpalooza. As Director, he utilizes his background in both education and technology to bring a unique vision to the district and its programs.  During his time in the position, the district has jumped into social media, adopted the Google Apps for Education and started to build a paperless environment with Google Docs. He helped spearhead the LEAP (Learning and Engaging through Access and Personalization) which put 1:1 iPads into the hands of all K–12 students at Eanes. See more at Mr. Hooker's Web Site! A weekly chat tackling the issue of educational technology from both sides. Ben Rimes, a former teacher turned educational technologist, chats with Pete Poggione, an Information Technology Professional from the private sector turned School IT Director. This week we follow Pete as he jets sets around to globe to Prague, where he is attending an Institute for Innovation in Education Gathering (iiE for short). We talk about potential changes to lighting, presentation technology, and other "wish list" items that teachers have regarding technology in their classroom, and touch briefly on why Pete doesn't listen to a podcast that he participates in weekly! Thanks to an excellent question from Joe via Twitter, Ben and Pete both share their thoughts on the definition of "21st Century Classrooms" and Ben even goes so far to share his more luddite-friendly version of "21 Things Every 21st Century Teachers Should Do and Keep Their Sanity" based on Carl Hooker's tech-heavy blog post of the same theme. And of course, listeners attempt to stump Pete, and almost come away with it in this episode!Timestamps for this week's questions:1:17 What is Pete doing in Prague, and what is the iiE?3:13 What is Pete's role with the iiE?4:50 A high school student helped plan an international conference?6:20 When our bond passes, will there be money to change the lighting in the high school?7:45 Will we be getting better projectors in the district?8:40 Wait, Pete doesn't listen to this podcast?9:25 Is it possible that we might have new dimmer lighting or other enhanced lighting?10:43 In 60 seconds or less, why does restarting your computer resolve a lot of problems?12:05 What do you think a 21st Century classroom looks like?17:18 Stump Pete! In this episode, we speak with Carl Hooker, the Mad Hatter of teaching and technology integration. Carl was instrumental early in my career as I transitioned to become a digital learning specialist fresh out of school. During our interview, Carl shared myriad ideas about the evolving landscape of professional development during COVID-19. We asked him about one of his latest blog posts, “A Beginner’s Toolkit for Teaching Remotely,” in which he details five key components in support of remote teaching. We will also share weekly FlipTips from Terry Porter and Janette Speyer. We end this episode, in the spirit of Teacher Appreciation Week, by honoring educators who curate on Flipboard:  Josh Allen, Linda Bernstein, Clay Reisler, Michael James, Liz Cho, Wesley Fryer, and Bret Biornstad. In this week’s episode, we continue our conversation with educator Carl Hooker as we detail how collaboration tools support instruction and how they work really well with Flipboard. Carl discusses his go-to app to stay on task: Trello, a free platform that allows students to collaborate on assignments with purpose. I flipped a “Scientific Method” Trello board into the "Flipboard EDU Podcast" magazine as an example of the way the two apps can work together.
