In this podcast, Dr Carly Lassig (DSQ's Lead Education Consultant) interviews Dr Emma Watkins, also known as Emma Memma (previously known as the Yellow Wiggle). This interview came about in response to the increasing interest from schools in Auslan (Australian Sign Language) and Key Word Sign (a visual communication approach that adds signs, borrowed from Auslan, to spoken words), and the DSQ's Education Team's observations of how music is such an effective way to teach children signing. Emma tells us about the development of Emma Memma, which teaches Auslan through music and movement, and is based on her PhD research. We learn about what first motivated Emma to learn to sign and how she continues to develop her Auslan skills and understanding of Deaf culture. We also discuss some considerations for introducing signing in schools. This podcast is a production of Down Syndrome Queensland. If you have a question, would like more information on any of our episodes, or have suggestions for future topics, send us an email - engagement@downsyndrome.qld.org.au.For more information please visit the DSQ website, or follow us on Facebook and Instagram.Mentioned in this episode:Down Syndrome Queensland

I'm so grateful to have Heather Walrath joining us on the podcast today. She currently serves as financial education and accredited financial counselor at the Navy Mutual Aid Association.  As part of the Education Team, Heather speaks one-on-one with servicemembers and spouses and provides group presentations to servicemembers and families across the country to  increase their knowledge and understanding of financial matters. Her areas of expertise include military and survivor benefits, including VA benefits and Survivor Benefit Plan. Heather talks about her early career interest in this profession after being an AFCPE FINRA Fellow. Her early volunteer experiences helped her build her skills and showed her how much she loved this work. Later on, she started out giving presentations on a part-time basis for Navy Mutual before that eventually grew into a full-time role. Over her career, Heather has given hundreds of presentations to thousands of servicemembers and their families about military transition. But as you will hear, she shares just as many lessons learned from her own experience going through military transition earlier this year when her active duty spouse retired. We spend a good deal of time talking through her experience and wisdom of the transition and retirement process, how to find good source material, and the advice that can help you make an even more successful military transition yourself. I know this will be a big benefit to all our listeners both getting ready for their own transition or working with others who are!  https://www.linkedin.com/in/heather-walrath-afc%C2%AE-mqfp%C2%AE-6531b077/ https://www.navymutual.org/mission-educate/ https://www.navymutual.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/candid_conversations_flyer-2024-01.23.2024.pdf  https://www.choosefi.com/military-fi-optimizing-your-financial-plan-before-military-retirement-daniel-kopp-cfp-ep-487/

#motivatewithkat Terance Gonsalves is a partner and chair of the education practice at the law firm of Alston and Bird. In this episode, he is here to discuss the new regulations and low enrollments in higher education joined by my co-host Deborah Solmor. Deborah shares her experience in the higher education space, while Terance offers his expertise as a legal professional. The guest provide insights and solutions for the challenges faced by schools in the current climate. The episode is informative and aims to alleviate some of the stress faced by educators and administrators. In this video, you will be able to learn Gainful employment regulations require career programs to meet metrics showing graduates find jobs and repay loans. They protect students and were reinstated, effective July 1, 2023. Programs may be cut if they don't meet metrics. But enrollment may stay stable as schools change programs. Regulations mandate reporting, like telling students if they didn't meet metrics. Students must acknowledge this. Some programs like culinary schools may struggle as grads often start in low-paying jobs. Training and empowering admissions advisors is key. Advisors need tools and knowledge for effective, compliant talks with students. They monitor call quality and build rapport to understand needs and guide students. Advisors are essential to a school's success. Resources and support help them guide students to good outcomes, benefitting both.  Timestamps of this Podcast: 00:02:39 Journey in higher education.  00:07:06 Admissions compliance in higher education. 00:07:39 Financial Aid Regulations.   00:14:22 Secret shopping for misrepresentations. 00:15:00 Department of Education's secret shopping.    00:20:22 Gainful employment regulations explained. 00:23:13 Gainful employment regulations. 00:27:00 Disclosure and transparency in education Connect with me: Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/motivatewithkat1/  Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100064915964209&_rdc=1&_rdr  Twitter: https://twitter.com/KbBelletty  LinkedIn:https://www.linkedin.com/company/motivate-with-k-a-t/?viewAsMember=true  Visit my website: https://lessons.motivatewithkat.com/  Terance Gonsalves is an education law expert and seasoned trial attorney.
